Bedding and towels are provided, and guests have access to a swimming pool and braai facilities.
Oom Benna’s Self-Catering is situated less than 1 km from the R27 between Kenhardt and Brandvlei and 600 km from Cape Town. The location offers clean air, ideal conditions for stargazing on a clear evening, and bird watching opportunities. The small town of Brandvlei is situated in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape, located in Bushmanland, also knows as the Thirst Land. Brandvlei is 15 km from Oom Benna’s Self-Catering. The region contains very little vegetation, primarily low shrubs and yellow grass among a rocky desert landscape.

26 guests' feedbackWe really enjoyed staying at the accommodation. It is only about half way to Kgalagadi from Cape Town. There is no 220V (that we knew of) but there are lights and a fantastic ice/freezer which apparently runs on wind/solar/battery power. We grilled delicious lamb chops and ribs (just bought a whole lamb from De Kraal Slaghuis in Brandvlei) in the fresh Karoo air. We would love to stay at the Karooplaas again.
The cool pond on a warm spring day was a wonderful treat. The house is wonderfully spacious.
Had a wonderful stay. There is no cell phone reception or power plugs. However, there is a car charger where a mobile phone can be charged. The house has lights and equipped gas geysers, stove etc. Is located at R27 which gives a feeling of insecurity, although it was safe.
The remoteness and quietness is wonderful. Had a lovely overnight stay on the way up to the Kgalagadi.
We chose this over accommodation in Brandvlei itself. The quiet farm was a very good discharge. Two items that may count for other customers: 1. Farm pond was not clean for swimming. 2. No Eskom power, ie inverter that lights and a mobile phone charger. It wasn't a problem for one night, but I think it's necessary to put this clearly on the website.
After a long day on the road, it was lovely to be received kindly. We had a nice barbecue under the stars and rested well in the comfortable accommodation.
Accommodation was clean. No power but the gas fridge works well. Kitchen has the necessary cutlery and crockery. Limited water pressure and gas water heating make showers a little difficult but manageable. Overall very pleasant stay. Well positioned for bird watching.
Eila met us, explained access and everything was 100% in place.
Great location for bird watchers. Extremely helpful hostess.
It's always fun for me to stay at Oom Benna's. The house is tidy, well equipped and nice and big with a massive yard and lots of privacy. It's close enough to the town and just off the main road between Kenhardt and Brandvlei on a beautiful Boesmanland farm. Oom Benna's is my number 1 choice when I go to Brandvlei, especially because my Scotties are also welcome.
Well recommended to all travelers on their way north. We enjoyed the comfort and privacy of "Oom Benna se huis" with a wonderful sense of the past as if you are really "kuiering" with Oom Benna and his family. It is really great to stay in this farm house which has been tastefully restored to its former self lacking nothing with regards to comfort. Swimming in the small farm dam was an added extra to our comfort.
Great overnight stop en route to Kgalagadi.
We stayed one night at Oom Bennas on our journey from north to south through the country. The facilities are basic, but very neat. We were kindly received by the owner and were provided with everything we needed.
We were received very kindly. The farm swimming pond was perfect to cool off in. Will stay there again.
Nice big farmhouse with lots of atmosphere. After a hot day on the road, jumping into the swimming pool was first class. Grilled on the stoep and hung out. The ideal overnight stop between Kgalagadi and the Cedar Mountains. Would stay here again.
Good starting point for Namaqualand.
History spot with typical farmhouse.
Would definitely recommend and stay there again myself.
Oom Benna's is very suitable for groups or families. Warm reception and convenient accommodation.
Now this is not a criticism, but an observation. Coming from a big city we are continually being warned about security issues. Oom Benna's is just off the R27 ─ a major arterial. As cell phone connection is extremely limited ─ non existent in the bedrooms, I think for guests' peace of mind a panic button to the main house should be set up, although I'm sure there has never been an incident! Very comfortable indeed.
Sal kon in enige kamer slaap. Great.
Thank you for a wonderful experience and good service.
We were pleasantly surprised with the spacious, neat and comfortable rooms. Each room with its own bathroom. It was definitely more than we expected and will definitely recommend it to our friends. Also just about halfway between the Cape and Kgalagadi. Thank you Heila for your effort and hospitality!
I had to work in the Brandvlei area and had a great time at Oom Benna's, especially since I was allowed to bring my doggies along. The house was neat and spacious and had most of what I needed, but I unfortunately I wasn't aware of the fact that there was no electricity. I appreciate the generator and the 12 V cellphone charger that they provided on short notice because I needed electricity for my work, but I suggest you mention the electricity thing somewhere on the site. I was also very impressed with the little amplifier for my cellphone. I recommend Oom Benna's, especially for holidaymakers.
See stars.
We weren't aware that there's no electricity, neither any power points for chargers. No microwave, TV, etc. Therefore okay for spending the night but definitely not for taking your children along. Everything works with gas. There is cellphone signal booster, yet no use if your battery is flat, and I'm not gonna leave my phone in the car to charge.
