100 guests' feedbackIt was a lovely venue which was very secure. The owners were very friendly and accommodating. They provided access to streaming accounts such as Netflix without any additional charges which was a pleasant surprise.
I would definitely recommend Otters' Haunt to anyone interested in a break from the city stress. A great family holiday with something for everyone and any age. We had the best time. I just loved kayaking on the river, walking to the quarry and just relaxing around a warm fire. Next time I will do river rafting. I will certainly be back.
Damian is very friendly. The bath is amazing. Gas appliance for cooking works well. Wifi available. Fish were rare due to all the rain, but overall very nice stay. Amazing bathtub in our room. And our dog was welcome.
There is plenty to do other than swimming, canoeing, walking and resting. Just being able to linger in the beauty of nature definitely recharged our batteries. There is nothing missing regarding the hospitality, friendliness and helpfulness of the owners. It was a privilege.
Had a great time. Felt safe, kids explored the island across the river. Fresh air, beautiful stars and lots of bird sounds.
We had a good time but the place was a little more run down than we expected. We explicitly asked if the TV in the house could connect to DStv, but the TV is too old to even load the application. It's not supported anymore. Only one outside shower is available, and there is low pressure for warm water in the main house. Even with all these drawbacks, we still had fun staying there for the weekend. It was just a little more bare bones than we expected.
The house is very close to the Vaal River and the atmosphere is peaceful and friendly. The whole place looks run down and the photos were definitely taken many years ago.
Not really. Too many mosquitoes and the fridge and kitchen are on the porch. The place is a bit neglected.
Not clean. Cobwebs. Dirty cupboards.
Lovely spot and, although basic, had everything one would need except one thing: a hot shower. Bedding could be also be renewed.
The lodges are located very close to the Vaal River. It is ideal for fishing or canoeing, with a lovely peaceful, tranquil atmosphere.
Biggest counting disappointment.
The pictures are no longer what the place looks like. Probably a few years back, but def not anymore. Upon arrival, our vehicle could not park near our unit at all. The whole place looks dilapidated with grass that is long and other places that are very dilapidated at first glance. So we were received by the owner and explained that it is an eco retreat where they turn off the power after 10 in which we were satisfied. After unloading our luggage on an old cart that is shared by everyone and looks like a child's toy, we first had a chance to look at the place. And grace we were shocked. The windowsills are full of dead bugs and flies and spiders, of which we found about 5 live ones during our stay. Dead bugs lay everywhere. The cutlery was a thriller. The glasses were dirty. Dead bugs laid in the cupboards etc. As we had a long day and didn't feel like fighting yet, we went to town so I could get myself poison for the night's entertainment. On returning, the power was turned off and the water was ice cold. I called the owner where he did not answer at all or call back until now. The lady there told us that they had turned off the power because the batteries were low because it was cloudy and there weren't many other people so they would like to save the power. The water was ice cold the whole time we were there. There is no maintenance of the site and it was really just a bad experience and we paid R1200 for it.
We stayed in the Otter's Den house - 6 adults and one 3 year old toddler. We hear there was a bad flood 9 weeks ago, but then you don't rent the house in such a condition. The photos must have been taken years ago, because in the meantime decay and neglect have taken over. The pool's water was so cloudy that one could not see the bottom at the deep end. The table outside on the patio is so lame that the coffee spilled if someone just touched it or slightly bumped it. The billiard table's legs are rotting, there was no white ball and the balls are rolling down by themselves. Only one stick can be used, the tip of the other stick is off. The entire patio floor was full of sand that we kept kicking into the house. The kitchen is definitely not big. The stove is not suitable for e.g. keeping 7 people's food warm. It was impossible to eat a breakfast of bacon and eggs together. The toaster's button that must be pressed to make toast does not work. The cutlery is adequate, but most mugs have small 'chips' on the rim. The cupboards are in a terrible state with bees crawling out somewhere at night and crawling all over the floor. Quite a problem because one guest is allergic to bees. The cabinet to the left of the stove looks like it's going to topple over at any moment. Drawers, doors and shelves inside cupboards are crooked, warped and look dirty on the bottoms. The washing up is separate and large, but decay is everywhere to be seen. There is an automatic washing machine which does not have a connection for water. One drying cloth is provided and this for 7 people for 3 days and according to Damian the drying cloth must serve as oven gloves because oven gloves disappear if they provide them. The TV room does not have DStv (yes, it is always under your Otter's Den house facilities). You have to log into your own DSTV and we struggled to get it right. The TV room is also much smaller than in the photos. The ceilings in the TV room, hallway and room with 2 single beds have 'down-lights' but none of their casings exist, so if you look up you see inside the ceiling - ie. cobwebs and electrical wires. It's really shocking and you keep wondering what will fall on you from the ceiling. Especially if you turn off the lights at night and are in bed. The light of the mentioned room's bedside lamp goes on and off all the time, like in a disco. Also, this room's inner door was open, but the lock was "locked", so you couldn't close the door if you wanted to sleep or get dressed. There was no key in it to unlock it again. My husband then took out the lock with a Leatherman and fixed it so the door would just close. This room also only has a small bookshelf that has to share as a 'hanging cupboard'. The mattresses on the single beds were like hostel mattresses and not suitable for adults. Each guest was given one bath towel and in each bathroom there was one towel for drying hands. It had to work for 3 days and 7 guests. If one bathroom has hot water, the other has cold water. The water pressure is pathetic and the shower head in the bathtub for washing hair is basically unusable because it is either scalding hot or freezing cold. The water runs in so slowly that it is cold by the time you want to bathe. The toilet in the separate bathroom is very old, the lid on top of the bowl is broken and the toilet is black in the back where the water lies. It's really creepy. There was also no toilet brush provided - only in the master bedroom's bathroom was one. The first night and next morning there was no hot water in the bathrooms. After one of us inquired, it was discovered that the gas cylinder that powers the gas geysers was empty. Surely this is part of a 'check' list before guests check in? We are bitterly disappointed with what we paid for the house plus R100 per dog extra per night. So an extra R1200 for 4 dogs from 3 families. The floors are mostly white 'subway' tiles which were not very clean. I think the floors were cleaner when we drove than they were when we got there and there wasn't even a mop. The grill had clearly not been cleaned in months and one side had been pulled loose from the frame. He should have been replaced a long time ago. The glass doors in the TV room, master bedroom, as well as the room with bunk beds, are difficult to close and are a security risk. Plusplunte: Damian, the manager/liaison person, was very friendly and helpful. The fridge is new and adequate. There are 2 beautiful new oven trays that can also serve as roasting trays. The Jetmaster in the TV room works well. We had a wonderful time outside on the patio and enjoyed the silence and tranquility. Despite the positives, we would not recommend or visit Otter's Den House again.
They make a special effort. You only need to take your clothes with you. There is everything one might need. House is old, but clean.
Located in the river just out of town, Otters' Haunt is a perfect hideaway for people who love being in a rural setting. The owners have huge knowledge of the area and can take one on interesting hikes and paddles on the river. Highly recommended.
Lovely short walks along the river and then longer walks through the grassland. Chalet is completely adequately furnished. There is no shower, but there is a comfortable large corner bath. Furthermore, there is everything you need.
It was a lovely time away. It is simple and comfortable.
We didn't take advantage of any of the activities as we were simply there for a break. It's perfect for that. The fact that it was ecological and dog friendly was what attracted us in the first place. It is basic. Don't go if you want everything to be new and perfect, it's not that kind of place. We loved our stay. The hosts and cleaning staff were helpful and friendly without being intrusive. Close enough to Parys and its attractions if that is what you want.
I think it's a bit expensive for the place. Everything is clean and tidy.
The cottage is not by the water, but a short walk away. It is a good place to sleep for 2. Very close to Paris and very peaceful with lots of things to do in the area. The cottage is basic, but comfortable.
It would have been different if we were on holiday. We were on an overnight business trip.
Prof. Graeme Addison is an expert on the Vredefort Dome and runs talks and walks on this fascinating topic.
Unfortunately, Otters Haunt's photos are misleading as to what they offer and where they are located. The unit we stayed in was very tired and not in very good condition. Don't expect to be able to take a shower as only a bathtub is in the particular unit. When we travel with our dogs, it's always for the dogs so we literally just sleep at the accommodation. The first night we turned off the lights around 8:30 p.m., and about an hour later a bat fell from the roof that I had to remove. I could still live with that, but the fact that we were literally eaten alive by something in the bed and between the sheets is something that is not at all acceptable to me. I literally couldn't complain because there just isn't time in our day. Every day we leave the accommodation from 6 o'clock in the morning until after 8 o'clock in the evening. I'll just hope I stop itching sometime this week.
Poor housekeeping and false advertising! We were very disappointed with the condition of the house.
Otters' Haunt, which sits on the banks of the Vaal River, offers peace of mind and something for nature lovers, hiking trails, bird watching, flyfishing, canoeing and then there are the Vredefort Dome tours.
The cottage we stayed in has all the necessary amenities. It was neat and clean. The fact that it is walking distance to the river is a huge plus! The weekend was relaxing and is ideal if you just want to rest and do nothing. However, the town is close enough if you need anything.
My wife and I had a wonderful breakaway weekend together with our two Daschunds. Also the Restaurant recommended by the owners of Otto's Haunt Graeme and Karen was fantastic. It was also pet friendly
Ek en my verliefde het vir die naweek soontoe gegaan, dit was fantasties, vriendelike dienste, het ons assisteer na die inkloktyd. Ons het verloof geraak daar, dit was regtig uitstekend, ons het elke oomblik geniet en het soveel saam ons teruggebring, ek sal dit vir enigiemand aanbeveel, dit was baie romantiese wegbreek.
If you expect new and modern Otter's Haunt is not for you. However, Otters Den House was spotless and comfortable. The fact that there is only solar power and gas makes one think twice about just turning on lights and wasting power. Despite the fact that there is a TV, we had so much fun on the porch that we never even went inside to turn on the TV. Otter's Haunt is medicine for the soul. Karen often came to see if everything was okay and my two daughters thoroughly enjoyed the canoe ride with her. Roxy the Collie accompanied us everywhere and served as a tour guide.
If you want to be in nature with the sound of running water in your ears, this is the place to stay. We really enjoyed it, thank you.
Otters' Haunt is conveniently close to Paris with nice restaurants and snuff shops.
This place is perfect for when you want to spend time away from the city to enjoy some time next to the river in a rustic themed house to look at the wildlife jumping through the trees just before sunset. The view from the swimming pool next to the river is amazing with all the plants and flowers that perfectly vines onto the railings.
Otter's Haunt is a little gem with heaps of beauty and potential. The outdoor area, river and walks are amazing. It's clean, well kept and full of nature. Our room, The Guineafowl Cottage is cute. Little outdated and requires some renovation, but is located in the perfect spot. I wish there was a little fence around the grass's braai-area, somewhere I could keep my dogs enclosed. Keeping them on a leash all the time is rather stressful, especially with all the distractions (other dogs roaming, birds, nature, & kids). Thank you for a lovely stay.
Two steps to enter. Bathroom 300mm stairs in and out of bathroom, spider shelf with spider behind toilet, bath full of bugs. Kitchen outside on porch no problem. Stove and microwave not clean. Grill loose bricks, dirty grill. Very nice garden and river view, lovely bird life, quiet environment. Fantastic if you want to rest like us. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing.
We enjoyed our stay and the host was the very helpful to us. This is going to be our annual trip to Parys.
No DStv, no oven only microwave which did not work. No linen for sleeping coach, only duvet and blanket. No hot water during weekend only once to fill the bath. Fridge froze the food.
Our arrival was not very warm and welcoming. We were just taken to the room and given the key, no additional information was given about other activities available. All the activities were on the website but costs etc. we could not find. The room was nice but the outside kitchen was a bit strange, also because there are blue monkeys and we just couldn't leave our stuff there. The first night started wonderfully until the power went off, it arrived every 30 minutes thereafter for 2 seconds and then went off again. Nobody ever came in and explained what was going on, we had 1 candle in the room. Even when we signed out the next day, nothing was said about it. We were not asked how our experience was, just asked how we were going to pay. It was not very unpleasant but I will not stay there again and also advise friends to stay there.
Not sure how the accommodation got the stars it has - not value for money. Good job that they are off the "grid", but certain times of the evening no electricity and no hot water every morning - is not what I paid for. Photos on website are misleading with what was found in the main house.
Deception by putting up nice pictures, place is definitely not for me, it was really unpleasant and far below standard. I understand it's dry and many excuses can be made but then I can't pay the same money for such a place and then I have to drive around Paris which is crowded for a decent place to sleep. It was not a pleasant experience.
I would just like to suggest that there should be a hand shower over the bath. The older people find it difficult to get out of a bath.
See stars.
Had very good service. Wonderful scenery and the perfect place for a getaway.
A relaxing spot with a beautiful view. The owners were friendly and we felt welcome. There are many things to do so you won't even have to leave the farm. Adventurous, beautiful and relaxing. They will definitely see me again.
Friendly welcoming upon arrival. Everything was ready for us and exceeded our expectations. Beautiful place that exudes a tranquility words can't describe. Would love to return. Thank you Otters' Haunt, your place is stunning.
Best weekend with my wife, amazingly romantic. Must say, our bodies and feet are very sore from all the walking along the river and everywhere, but it's a great experience and probably the most romantic place if you like romance.
Paris is great, but is a bit too small for all the tourists on weekends, so get yourself a central parking spot and walk where you want to be. There are stunning places such as Cake Corner, O's, Farm Kitchen! Otter's Haunts is very nice and is a real relaxing place. They offer fantastic service and Karen bends over backwards to make one's stay the best.
The Porcupine Room is neat but could do with some renovation, like the sliding door is very difficult to open and close and the lock does not work well. The room in winter is cold but has a heater, which battles to overcome the cold - possibly isolate the ceiling to maintain the temperature. For two people we were handed out one bath towel which might have been an oversight and we realised too late at night to mention the need for another towel to the owners. It fits the type of accommodation to have an outside kitchen but we would have preferred it to be indoors.
If you want to complain then there are small things. The microwave didn't want to work, so we used the stove, but there's nothing to really complain about. We had a wonderful peaceful time. We would like to thank Graham and Karen for their kindness. Just like them, we love nature. This is not a fishing resort, but I was able to throw in my rod and even caught a barber. The short walking trails were very beautiful. We also really enjoyed the collie dogs. On Sunday morning we enjoyed a delicious champagne breakfast with cheese, oysters, mussels and olives under the big old willow tree right next to the river. In the evenings we had a wonderful time next to the sickle forest fires. Next time I want to visit the forest camp with my children so that we can do some "river rafting". It's well worth visiting "Otters Haunt"!
Enjoyed it a lot, people there are hospitable and they help with everything.
We enjoyed our stay very much. A great place to relax and unwind. Our daughter made best friends with the friendly dogs. Will recommend to anyone and will definitely book again.
Otters' Haunt is for your everyday down to earth people who don't expect 5 star accommodation at all. The house where we stayed was clean and tidy but the crockery was not 100% clean. Finishing the sink will make the area look much neater. They were cutting paths on the island but unfortunately the bridges to other islands no longer exist, so you are limited to only walking around on 1 island. Animal friendly but unfortunately there are costs involved which are not mentioned in the advertisement. There are kayaks for paddling on the river but also costs involved. Throw in fishing rod and catch some fish but be careful, they will eat all your bait. You have to take everything with you because if you forget something you have to drive about 5 km to the nearest shop. As for the site, it could definitely be tidier. However, I would go back anytime precisely because it is so incredibly peaceful, safe and relaxing.
Nice environment but neglected.
We had to ask for WiFi password, where we were told, it costs R50 per day after advertisement says: free WiFi. Owner then agreed to give us free WiFi. Cottage very far from the river and advertisement creates the impression that it is practically on the bank of the river. Building is very old and needs new paint inside. Bed sleeping uncomfortable. No security gate at building. Open parking which is not safe at all. Was a disappointment.
Well the pictures look different than the venue. The place needs fumigation because there were insects all over the place. The room was not clean and the carpet was filthy. We ended up booking another place in town. We wasted a lot of money because the place was booked for three nights. The staff was friendly though.
Won't stay there again.
It was a lovely relaxing weekend, thank you very much.
Very friendly and beautiful environment. Very friendly service and the place is very clean. We'll definitely go back again to enjoy all the walking trails on the islands.
Children really enjoyed swimming pool. Family had a lot of fun together.
We loved our stay at Otter's Haunt. We will definitely be back.
Graeme, Karen and Damien could not be more welcoming. We will return. Young girls, old dog, young dog and tired father loved the place. If heavy industry upstream gets its act together, perhaps we'll see otters next time.
Warm reception. Beautiful and very relaxed. Well-equipped little house. We will definitely be back.
The Cormorant Chalet is adequately equipped. Don't expect luxury linen and crystal glasses though. The river and island hopping hikes are such an adventure. Being in the Vredefort Dome which is the largest and oldest meteor impact site in the world was awesome. Manageress Karin was very helpful and keeps an eye on the safety of her guests without imposing. We never lacked for hot water and the pool is glorious.
It was very peaceful. The owners were very friendly. It was very hot and there was no pool for our own use. We had to go to the other camp and ask permission to swim there. Only some places you rent have access to all amenities.
Everything was very clean and we had a nice stay as a whole. It would have been better if every house has a it's own bathrooms, seeing as shared bathroom is very open for a group of friends with children. The open bathroom is very cold in winter. The water is very nice and warm.
Although everything needed was there, I feel the price is a little high because the place needs attention, grass is long and garden untidy, access control is not on standard.
The peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty are food for the soul. Thank you very much for the friendly reception.
Based off the images and the real thing was not what we expected. Some maintenance on the place and better bedding would have made our experience much better. Even though we knew it was riverside accommodation the showers, bath and toilets were covered in spiders and nests. Debugging once in a while can help the feel of the place. The bedding could have been a better quality and my Mrs and I left with bites all over bodies. We think possibly bed bugs. On the upside we enjoyed the lovely pool and the river side walks. Thanks for the stay however we will not be returning.
We expected a lot from Otters Haunt, but were very disappointed. There was no coffee, tea, milk, sugar or water available in the room. Also the fridge was outside on the sidewalk even though there was more than enough space in the room. One had to go out of the room to get to the fridge. I think the price justifies the supply of all the items mentioned above. Sorry, will not overnight there again.
I feel that before we as customers would check in then they would at least make sure the place is clean inside also only had one toilet roll and I think we pay quite a lot per day and we had to try and secure power lines ourselves for water it didn't just drip, but poured in that it made puddles on the floor and wet our bedding too.
The place has few fishing stands, you have to cross a small bridge to try fishing on an island and with a small one it is difficult. There is no place to play for my child and the places are located on top of each other.
Perfect location to relax and so close to Johannesburg.
We had a great time there, 1 night may not be long for a complete review but we had a great time. Enjoyed the pool, although it's a bit small. Loved the yard in front of the cabin, perfect for a braai and star gazing. The cabin itself was nice and cozy, it does need a little TLC. So no complaints really, thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Graeme the river man is a very nice and laid back guy. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
Enjoyed it a lot. If you like modern accommodation, this is not for you. Simple but clean and tidy. Could do with upgrading.
It was very nice and tranquil in nature! We went for walks and just enjoyed the fresh air and silence with the sounds of the birds. We even saw an otter when we sat next to the river and relaxed! What an experience.
We wanted to take our adult children away for the weekend to take a rest and this was possible at Otter's Haunt. They enjoyed it so much that they would like to visit again with friends in the future.
House was comfortable.
Very friendly and helpful people. Very neat. Maybe just get leaflets up to date, the ones there were dated 2007.
I just suggest they fix the Jacuzzi.
We had a lovely stay at Otters' Haunt in the Guinea fowl cottage. Clean and tidy. I think the owners could pay some attention to the inside of the house. The ceiling pulls loose in places and the sofa is not very comfortable for older people. It didn't bother us personally because we're not full of fiemies, but I think of people who might be critical. Will definitely stay there again. It was already our second time.
The location and calm is incredible. The walking trails are good. The house is old and there is a little work to do, but it didn't bother us. The activities, such as rowing on the river, was expensive.
It only makes sense to turn on the fridge and geyser if you are expecting guests. Struggled all day to keep soda and food cold and fresh because it wasn't on. Late at night when we wanted to take a bath, the geyser was still off. The Jacuzzi is also right by the cottage's bedroom window and the people and their children screamed and frolicked in it until the early hours of the morning. Of course I also give people their pleasures but it was poor planning for the thing.
No fridge in chalet. Don't like ablution pads either.
It is just the right place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Een prachtige plek om te verblijven. Heel veel ruimte in Otter's Den. Heerlijk rustig met een mooi uitzicht op de rivier vanaf het terras. Het huis heeft onderhoud nodig en het was niet overal even schoon.
Very nice by the Vaal River in nature. You can fish, picnic and "river raft". It's just not 5 star. A little old. But we will stay again, only longer this time.
See the stars.
Very quiet, nice pool, beautiful by the river, neat and clean. The owners very friendly and helpful. Karen has an incredible amount of knowledge regarding the history of the dome. Very well located near Parys which is a beautiful town.
A-frame houses are nice, tidy, and the hostess is friendly, but unfortunately there is no privacy. There are absolutely people swimming on your doorstep all the time (already a place to sit). The road to the ablution is far and it is pitch black there (please take flashlights with you), and you have to climb over big rocks in the dark. Lots of flies. There was a lot of party noise from neighboring resorts/stands on Saturday night until the early hours of the morning, which was bothersome. The furniture is very old fashioned and eclectic. We will not go there again.
Friendly owners and very helpful and always available if needed. concerned about their guests. About enough to do for the adventurer. If you want tranquility and want to escape from the hectic city life, the place is ideal. The Guinea Fowl cottage perfectly furnished for a lovely stay. Would recommend Otters Haunt to anyone who appreciates the tranquility of nature. Adventurers can thrive here! Dave & Karen make your visit worthwhile. Will rest there again.
The place was neither very clean nor well equipped. Bottle opener, egg spatula, proper tongs, washcloth and soap are all things that were not available.
The premises as a whole need attention. Gardens neglected. Rooms need restoration and upgrading. Didn't stay there at all. Friendly reception.
Quiet, bird paradise, nice hosts, lectures on and viewing of Vredefort Dome, to a trip arranged for two elderly people through the rapids. And ... fireflies in the evening.
We certainly had a good time and the bushveld atmosphere was great. We plan to book there again next year when we go to ride the Parys Mtb challenge.
Beautiful location, comfortable stay. Nice pool and jacuzzi.
It's beautiful there, but trees block the view of the river. It is very peaceful, the cottage is very well furnished, but for the price, you expect at least the basic tea/coffee/sugar/milk in the kitchen, as other places offer. Would recommend the place if the price was lower, but currently not good value for money.
The accommodation needs attention. There was no TV reception.
