Braai area has cobwebs and spiders, but you have to remember you are basically in the forest. Unfortunately, the nearest shop is in Paris, a 30-minute drive away. I will definitely go back.
The owners are amazing, extremely generous and willing to assist us throughout our stay. The rooms are amazing and clean, and all utilities in the kitchen were there to make it easier for us. We would definitely go back again.

My wife and I had a great stay. We were kindly received, and could get in touch with the host at all times, if we wanted to discuss anything. The only problem is the last few kilometers to get to the accommodation. We have a normal vehicle, and the road makes one gasp for breath because of the potholes. If it could be changed, we would stay there every other month.

I would recommend the place if you need overnight accommodation for a wedding or need to be close to Paris for a function or work. It's not ideal for a holiday or break away from the city. The spots are not private and the braai area is full of insects and cobwebs. There is a view of the river and I believe one might be able to fish there. There is a pool table, foosball and a swimming pool. There were boats lying by the river, but they were full of leaves and clearly hadn't been used for a long time. No one mentioned that it was for guest use. The owners also live on site and were helpful. The house we stayed in (Oranjerivier) is beautifully decorated and very clean. Lovely double bed and pillows, DSTV and even aircon and a fan. The shower is either cold or too hot, which was frustrating.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend at Out of Africa on Vaal. We went with the idea of resting and we certainly did. The units were very well equipped and tidy. Because it is winter, we did not make use of the pool and river facilities available, but were very impressed with the nice, tidy and many braai areas. The owners are friendly and very helpful. Unfortunately there is no MTN mobile phone signal, but other networks do. Part of the road is dirt road that has been scraped very neatly and we were able to reach the place comfortably. We will definitely use Out of Africa on Vaal's accommodation again.

I have been to a lot of accommodations in the area over the past few months, but I have never been to a place like Out of Africa on Vaal. The accommodation is exceptional. The views are beautiful, the property is spacious and the best part of my stay was both the owners, husband and wife, they are absolutely wonderful, genuine and kind people and they make your stay even that much better. They are so friendly and welcoming and you feel welcome and at peace, they are always there to help at any time. Very special people and I thank them very much for being so amazing and warm. Honestly, I will never look for any other places, I will go straight back to Out of Africa on Vaal. It's absolutely amazing, words can't explain it enough. But you won't be disappointed.
Such a pleasure to open the curtains in the morning to see the amazing view and watch the sunset each evening from the terrace or personal braai area. I think the time we enjoyed most, was sitting quietly with that view spread out in front of us, drinks in hand each evening. The photos shown of Out of Africa on Vaal are an accurate representation of what we saw on arrival.
It was a pleasant visit and the owners are very nice people. Everything is nice and clean. Will definitely visit again in the future.

The booking process was easy and flawless. All staff we came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. The accommodation unit was clean, well equipped and tastefully decorated. We really enjoyed our visit there. However, I feel that guests should be informed in advance of the dirt road.
The owners are very pleasant people. Down to earth Afrikaners. All the places on the river were flooded so we made the most of our time and were proud to be able to support Afrikaners.
The biggest treat apart from the peaceful river was the beautiful kittens they have. They were so kind and loving and we really enjoyed it. People who visit must like cats because the cats like you! Also had nice weather throughout the day. Very warm while the evenings were still very cold. Overall, very enjoyable and would go again.
The last night we had no electricity, the owner did not have the decency to come to us and tell us that there is an issue. We left the next day before check out time. The 17km road is definitely not for a passenger vehicle, only 4x4. It is a terrible road. Upon arrival we were shown our room and amenities, the guest was friendly, the unit very clean and neat. When we went to bed, there was no hot water. I messaged her, she said she would check the DB board, she never responded to say it was on or off. Later we found out by ourselves that there was hot water upon testing. The 17km gravel road is terrible for small vehicles, you definitely require a 4x4 or large SUV vehicle to travel that road. I used my Polo Hatch, and I felt sad for my vehicle. On the last night, the power was off, we did not get a message to say what the issue was, whether it would be fixed, why the generator was not working. It was quite frustrating. If they had told us what the problem was, we could have dealt with it and accepted it is what it is, after all, we live in Africa. A little communication goes a long way. I have my own holiday home at the beach, and I also have problems that arise, but I always keep my guests informed, even if it is bad news. I am with MTN, and I had no signal to make phone calls to my children, and they had no WiFi facility at the premises. Sadly I won't recommend or return to this establishment, also felt it was a bit pricey for what was on offer.
Outside areas facing the shore are unusable due to flood. Garbage that came down in the river is still hanging in trees. Owners' cats are in and out of units and bother while people are grilling. Swimming pool can only accommodate a maximum of 5 people, so if 1 unit's guests are there, no one else can use the pool. Cement benches are broken I fell off and got hurt quite badly. Nowadays, strictly speaking, one can only spend time in unity with the doors closed and watch TV. Then at half past seven in the morning, when you are still trying to sleep peacefully, trailers pass with a loud noise right by the unit window where owners are shouting directions and workers are moving up and down with wheelbarrows full of bricks. The view is not like in photos where lush green lawns are seen, it is a view of absolute chaos and damage caused by flood. We only stayed 2 nights out of 4 because you couldn't even just sit quietly and enjoy the surroundings. Owners have no empathy for negative things and only promise to improve for next guests, what about guests who are dissatisfied.
The place is filthy, the accommodation is not great and not worth the money. There are rabbits in cages and 2 Rottweilers in a caged off area.
Road is very very bad, can hardly drive there with a normal vehicle, if you don't have a van, don't forget it. Power went out Sunday afternoon, and never came on until Monday before we left, already out before 8 in the morning. The place has a lot of style and a lot of stairs, no one informed us that it is not wheelchair friendly, or not suitable for people with health problems, is very very poor, one nightmare weekend, I really regret my money so wasted. They have a generator but had kamma problems, no communication with their guests about problems, very very poor.
The apartment was very clean and tidy. Nice fish caught. Good service.
Our main purpose was fishing. Because of all the rain, the conditions were a little more difficult. But we had so much fun staying and visiting, and are already planning our next visit to Out of Africa on Vaal.
Hospitable people, it was nice to have our dog children with us. Truly a special getaway like this in the forest with the river flowing peacefully a stone's throw from your front porch, and the call of the osprey that makes you appreciate this piece of paradise so much.

Everything from the accommodation, hostess, view, cleanliness, comfort was beyond expectation. It was quiet and peaceful, my dog enjoyed running around just as much. From our arrival to our departure everything was smooth. Ilze was always available. A quick WhatsApp and we are sorted with wood. This is the perfect place for a quick getaway from Gauteng with the whole family. If you like barbecue with a view then this is the place for you. Thank you for everything Ilse. We will definitely see you again soon with the whole family.

From our arrival to our departure we were provided with the most friendly service. The owner has really excelled at the weekend in a gem of a place, that without any doubt I will want to get away there again soon. The areas were fully lit and converted in such a way that it is ideal with a breathtaking view of the river. The meals that were offered extra were totally filling and tasty. Although it was freezing outside, the rooms have heaters which made it so cozy in the early mornings and evenings.
The accommodation was off the books. Good quality beds and bedding. The hostess went out of her way to make everything as comfortable as possible. The surroundings were lovely, peaceful and we were surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. We will definitely return. For the price, the is an absolute dream getaway.

Everything you need in the chalet. Relaxing to sit on the chalet's veranda in tranquility and look over the Vaal River. Can even try to catch fish with a nice seat on grass next to the water. There is a stretch of dirt road that you drive to the resort, but it was in good condition when we drove there.

Might do something about the gas geyser. The water in the shower does not regulate very easily.
Unfortunately there was not much to do because the heavy rains that caused flooding. Muddy and river currents were too strong to do any of their water cascades. Will go back to do this again.
In our unit the security door was not working and did not have the key, both the braai areas did not have roofs. The tap at the basin was loose which made it difficult to use. We enjoyed our stay very much, the owner and staff are friendly and welcoming. The above is just comments to note.
Nice and quiet under the conditions of the river which was very full. At least I was able to fish a little but I think in general if the river wasn't so full the fishing spot would have been nicer. But we made the best of a bad thing and still enjoyed it in the peaceful nature. We made our home in Orange River. Very neat and clean. All that one needs. Would have preferred a bed rather than a sofa bed in the hall as it wasn't that comfortable. But otherwise it was very nice and was received very kindly. Will definitely book there again for a weekend.
Quite and peaceful stay.
The host was friendly, but insufficient communication provided with no remote or advice for how to get in and out of the main gate. Inadequate parking space (no indication or allocated parking spots). No cleaning service is provided (I know it is self-catering, but many self-catering units offer complimentary cleaning or an option for cleaning at an extra cost). The house lacked basics like coffee, sugar and or tea. The room had a stuffy smell to it and you can't open a window as the cat comes in. There were not enough pillows only 1 flimsy pillow per person. The towels supplied were smelly. The shower did not drain propperly, the toilet is not level and very uncomfortable. There were make-up and other items left in the drawers (as if someone was staying there). Gas appliences with no matches or lighter to ignite it. All and all I can say it was well situated for the function we had and was able to accommodate a large group of people, on the Vaal River and nice entertainment for the kids. It will be a bit uncomfortable if one doesn't go in a big group as the rooms are built very close to each other with little privacy. The host expected us to do your dishes and clean the room or be fined, which leads me to wonder if the room was cleaned before we checked-in or was it cleaned by the previous guests.
What an unpleasant experience! Upon arrival at the gate, no instructions or arrangements were given on how to enter the gate. No remote was provided to move in and out, not enough parking at all for the amount of sleeping space. We unlock the wooden house, it is so cramped with a stench that no one can stand. The bathroom smells like urine, and no cream spray or toilet spray that takes the smell away. We noticed that shower water ends up on grass and eco friendly soap is not recommended on the website. The towels provided in the rooms have a smell and are rock hard, there is only 1 pillow available per person. No coffee or tea is provided. 3 wine glasses for a house that sleeps 8. The wine glasses are so dirty that you cannot use them until you wash them. After a delicious family barbecue, we are informed by the hostess that we must wash the dishes ourselves or we will be fined, there is an option for a cleaner at a cost, not disclosed in advance. Makes me wonder if the place was cleaned before we arrived or is the house as the previous guests left it. At the braai facilities there are no bins available to keep the braai area clean and tidy. The entertainment area was a treat. The pool table and foozeball provided a lot of fun.
It was a horrible experience. Als was full of dust and full of cobwebs. Upon arrival I had to clean the pool myself until their people stepped in. The boats and equipment to be used on the dam had not been cleaned in years. And then the bunny cage, they don't have any water and look like they haven't been fed in days. Our stove in the unit had no gas. Only stayed 1 night.

Very beautiful place and friendly people. Customers should just know that there is a dirt road. To get to the place there is a 14 km dirt road that is not too bad. All and all we had a great time.
It is on the banks of the Vaal River with a view of the river from every unit. Very clean, neat and open. No expense was spared to make guests feel luxurious and special. I would only like the pool to be open for the very hot days, but can confidently recommend it and it's definitely cost effective.

Pleasant safe stay.
Unfortunately we did not have water from the second day and drove home a day earlier than the 5 days as booked due to animals that were sick. The dirt road there was not bad at first but parts of it were not made for ordinary sedan vehicles.

Stay itself was wonderful, the only thing was the people next to us did bring their 4 small dogs with, so when we came out of our flat you couldn't pass as there's the dogs trying to bite you. Out of Africa is really a peaceful place otherwise and we will recommend it to anyone that needs to get out to recharge. Thanks Out of Africa, for your great breakaway place.
We struggled with the water temperature in our unit. The shower's water temperature is not constant and struggled a lot.
Although the decor is stunning and our braai area is a lovely chill area and the chalet had an aircon, the place is definitely not for small children. Have to Constantly watch them. The jungle gym and sitting areas had spiders wherever you looked, had to clean the area to just be able to sit. While I understand spiders are part of nature it looked like the entertainment area, small jungle gym and sitting area hadn't been cleaned in months. No umbrellas to sit by the pool as advertised in the picture and all activities that they have available are at an additional cost which is not mentioned on the advertisement or by the owner when enquiring. Definitely not a place for a one-year-old as he constantly needed to be watched because of the spiders, rough terrain and unsafe conditions. This is more for couples or people with older kids and the dirt road is 14km.
At main gate upon arrival no one picks up their phones to call us in, forcing us to call the neighbors, whose name is on their gate. The owner wasn't very impressed with my call, because apparently it wasn't the first time this had happened, so now we become their problem and he bears the risk if something goes wrong, but the man gave in, as a storm was brewing the horizon lay. On arrival at the house, 2 people received us who did not understand a word when we spoke Afrikaans or English. The kitchen's sign that reads: Grandpa and Ouma se Plekkie, makes you feel unwelcome. Also their family photos on the wall, bath sponges in the shower, the walking frames next to the dressing table and drops of cold drink in a fridge that hadn't been turned on yet. Found power box and just smelled gas - all the knobs on the gas stove were turned on, really felt like we were intruders. Coffee and tea containers were empty and the sugar container's sugar had already crystallized, so just put the kettle off again. A man arrived the night the dogs came to feed, and we were told the people were on leave. Next day it's hot, but pool has a tarp left, all the water activities are covered in cobwebs and everything is dirty. We looked for someone to help and asked for the owner, but again - no one talks. When you realize your home is better than the place you pay for, you just know. instead of another day of good sleep, we pack up and leave. Arriving at the gate, we call the number to get out and in no time the phone is answered very kindly. Even though we were there with a discount on the spot, we feel we wasted our money and time.
The outside areas are neglected and dirty. There were no cleaning services or garbage disposal all weekend. The view over the river is beautiful but there are many steeps and uncomfortable stairs. The place is not at all suitable for older people or people who have difficulty walking. Not up to standard and also little or no maintenance. Dangerous slopes and stairs not suitable for small children, the elderly or people with difficulty walking. River view is beautiful and it's very quiet.

We had a little trouble finding the place, but when we got there we were kindly received by the hostess, Ilze. The place is a bit cramped, but very cozy. The only thing we lacked was a whisk to make porridge. Here and there there are little things that need attention. None of the lamps had light bulbs in them, but they were minimal. The shower was also hot and then suddenly cold, but maybe we didn't handle it right. We forgot to bring spices, but Ilze soon helped us. We loved that each spot had its own boma. My wife and I enjoyed a delicious champagne breakfast there. There was also a white cat that visited us and I especially enjoyed it. The ducks also entertained us and every now and then came up to eat the porridge that had fallen. The fishing area has a nice lawn and is well equipped. We even climbed a little mountain. The view from the top is breathtaking. No, thumbs up for Ilze and her husband with a lively place. Would recommend it to anyone!

Unfortunately we waited an hour for someone to come and sign us in, one of the workers was only able to locate the key after 45min. Other than that we had a nice stay. We only suggest that the chalets each get their own stairs, it's a bit impersonal that people have to walk past you all the time where you have to braai to get into their own chalets.

The unit we stayed in was quite small, however the one our children stayed in was very comfortable. Hence we spent most of our time in it.

We had no hot water for 3 days. There was no communication from management. Very dissatisfied.
The Vaal River house has a beautiful river view and is beautifully decorated, but was very dirty inside - faeces on the side of the toilet, toothpaste on the edge of the sink, wet washcloth in the corner of the shower, used swimming towel over the shower 's door, used razors, washing sponges and empty hand soap containers lying around. The kitchen cupboards were a mess, full of dust and dead insects. The place is advertised for 9 people, but there is seating for a maximum of 7 in the living room and a maximum of 4 around the dining room table in the kitchen. Apparently one is not allowed to use the tables in the common area to eat at. The cleaning staff came to wash the owners' laundry in the washing machine while we were there. We also had to share our bathroom with the day visitors who said there were no facilities for them. The place is also very noisy as it is under another unit, so your ceiling is their floor, and it is also right next to the chicken coops.
Pleasant and peaceful stay.

The lodge offers a variety of activities that includes river tubing, canoeing and fishing. Guests can make use of the swimming pool, pool table, braai facilities, and large lapa with ample seating.
Guests can hire pedal boats and bicycle boats that ensures great fun on the river.
Guests can also order breakfast, dinner and waffles. Meals need to be requested in advance.
