Accommodation comprises dormitory rooms, twin rooms, and camping sites in the garden of the Owlhouse Backpackers. All rooms and camping sites share the communal kitchen, common areas and ablutions.
Sip sundowners in the garden, watching the sky light up with stars, or curl up next to the wood-burner. Treat yourself to the home-made bread and cottage cheese while braaing some delicious Nieu Bethesda Karoo lamb. If you don't fancy cooking, Ian and Katrin, your well-travelled hosts, can provide breakfast, a packed lunch and/or dinner from locally produced meat and veggies, or point you to the best eateries around town.
Environmentally conscious, the Owlhouse Backpackers is one of the few establishments in Nieu Bethesda making use of solar geysers, compost toilets and grey water recycling. All rubbish is separated and as much as possible composted on site.
Take a dip with the goldfish in the dam, explore Nieu Bethesda or hike in the surrounding Sneeuberg Mountains. Make day trips to the Mountain Zebra National Park and The Valley of Desolation or sign up for guided San rock art and fossil tours. WiFi to catch up with the outside world, but we promise you wont miss anything.

I had a great stay, thanks.
Nice accommodation, beds in the dorm were not too comfortable but definitely a nice stay.
Okay. Did not like the fact that we did not have a bathroom close to us.
Our host couldn't have done more to make our stay more pleasant. Will definitely return! Thank you so so much.
Good service and facilities. Would love to recommend it.
Clean, comfortable and friendly place to stay.
Beautiful little town and the backpackers had everything we needed.
It's pet-friendly and very neat and you can walk around to get something to eat and nice shade trees.
Maybe one double bed with a double sofa instead of the mattress in the corner of the office. There is a door where visitors can enter because it is in front of the toilet. Kitchen curtains or blinds please. Security good and police visibility good.
Very good value for money. Kathleen's hospitality was amazing.
A lovely place to stay over. Definitely value for money. Great hospitality. Can recommend it. The road to Nieu-Bethesda is not bad (from Graaff-Reinet side) and is mainly a tar road in good condition.
Friendly and helpful hosts in a fantastic location.
I am not au fait with what backpackers are generally offered, but I did expect a bathroom towel.
The room was clean and tidy and the bathroom facilities were also very clean. Very friendly hostess who helped a lot with information about New Bethesda and all the attractions.
An undiscovered gem in the Karroo.
It is a lovely overnight place for a couple or one person. Excellent amenities. Kitchen, living area very well furnished.
Use the road from Graaff-Reinette rather than from Middelburg, especially if it's raining. A closet for hanging clothes would be an improvement!
Neat accommodation. Clean. Friendly, helpful reception.
I booked in Backpackers, i.e. value for money and not the same expectation as with guest room. But I didn't expect that twin room was only accessible through 6 bed dormitory - and that over creaking floorboards at night. So it was a bit of a problem - luckily very nice family in dormitory. Otherwise clean, although minimalist, but good.
Accommodation was very nice and clean and tidy, can only look at new linen, sheet was old.
Quiet place with everything you need.
Very pleasant, tidy and safe accommodation.
It's only the doors that touch the floor at the bottom that make noise and are a bit difficult to open and close. Especially if you go to the toilet in the middle of the night it feels like you're going to wake up the whole town.
We stayed one night in the Twin Room during March 2017. The room was clean and comfortable. There are convenient facilities for self caterers and backpackers which are kept in a good state of repair and are clean and hygienic. Good value for money, with friendly staff.
We camped in Owlhouse Backpackers garden, and we were able to use the bathroom facilities and kitchen. It's nice and clean and the kitchen is well equipped. It's really good value for money, and the location is nice and central. Be sure to do the dinosaur tour in New Bethesda.
Neat yet simple accommodation with all the necessary amenities. Bathrooms and kitchen are very clean! New Bethesda is a small town with interesting attractions. One night was hopelessly too little!
In a town lost in time, walk down the dusty streets that know everything.
Best location in town and the ideal place if you are touring/traveling with a group of friends.
We got there after 8pm so had to arrange as it was a bit late. The woman was very friendly and left everything neat and tidy for us. It is very safe there as she unlocked in advance and nothing was out of place. It is more like a house where a family of 4 or more can also sleep over. Cleanest backpackers I know of! Amenities also well equipped.
Very basic but with everything you need for a relaxing overnight stay. Feel free to eat at Karoo & Lamb - delicious potjiekos.
All we missed was a pool to cool off in. There are only positive things to write about the place. Reception was very good and immediately made you feel at home, the accommodation was clean and tidy and the bedding was fresh and welcoming. The environment was truly something to experience. I would recommend the road from Graaff-Reinet, but not the road coming from Middelburg (this only applies to the dirt road section). What can be improved is to install screen doors and screens in front of the windows that can open. The mosquitoes carry you away, or simply suck you empty on the bed. It will also help to be able to sleep with doors open in the summer months and still feel safe with a screen door, especially if it can also act as a security door.
We were a group of 7 who slept over. Everything was right and tidy. The bathrooms were also nice and clean. We took advantage of the large fridge but missed a freezer. Will recommend it to my friends.
The house was clean and tidy, although the curtains (broken) and dish towels (dirty) did not meet good standards. The towels were sandpaper and the beds made terrible noise, but otherwise it was comfortable and well located.
This was our second time at Owlhouse Backpackers and it's been really nice every time.
New Bethesda was the overnight stop for the Lormar mountain bike race. It was an excellent choice by the organizers.
We only slept one night in a tent. We used the outside toilets and showers and were really impressed with how clean and tidy they were. Our children thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The only rooms we used inside the house itself were the living room and the kitchen. We only used the kitchen to make coffee the morning of our departure. The kitchen was a bit dirty, but there were a lot of other people staying there too. Overall we were very impressed and it was very affordable. We will definitely recommend it to other people!
Clean and tidy and basic accommodation. Garden needs some attention to make hanging out in the heat more comfortable.
The place to sleep is cute, but the owners are extremely unfriendly. Service at their restaurant is just as bad as the food. They make the experience really bad. It seems as if one is inconveniencing them by supporting them.
Very good. It was very neat and the bathroom was spotless. The sheep is recommended. The village has a lovely atmosphere and we felt safe walking around. There is also delicious ginger beer.
Clean and tidy in a safe area where you can still walk the streets after dark without any fear.
Crisp brand new white bedding! Clean and new interior decorations, but just plain and relaxed! The Backpackers' owners' restaurant is the very best place to eat in town!
Very clean and tidy, and everything you need is there. The bedding is clean, cozy and warm - problems with the lights were fixed immediately.
We were told there were no places to eat in the evening except their restaurant, so we ate there (although there was no food for my 2 year old). We did find another restaurant open for the second night that was more kid friendly.
Clean and friendly. We met interesting people and the on-site animals were cool as well.
Nice pot at Karoo Lamb and slept well in a neat and clean room. Was cold, but the electric blanket and heater helped very soon. Very safe and quiet. Beautiful evening and stars.
The cats were great company!
We stayed one night in the Owlhouse Backpackers on our way to the East Coast. Although it was the middle of winter, we slept wonderfully warm. The water was so hot that it was difficult to get out from under the shower. The cottage is earthy and so unique to New Bethesda. Truly a highlight of the holiday! Quiet and safe! My dog says thank you too.
Do not miss!
The accommodation was spacious - but felt it was not ideal for a couple - however it's great for a family!
Lovely backpackers. Good location. Beautiful town.
New Bethsesda is a rustic little place. We really enjoyed our trip to Kitching's Fossil Center and staying at Owlhouse Backpackers for one evening on our way to the Garden Route. Owlhouse Backpackers provided all we needed at a very reasonable cost. Our 4 bed accommodation was clean and neat, as was the kitchen and bathroom areas. Thank you Katrin!
