In season we offer river rafting and tubing on site and we can arrange riding or Sani Pass trips to nearby Lesotho. Pennygum is an outstanding base - just 6.4 km from Underberg, in which to explore the surround area and world heritage site.

My husband was on business in the area, a nice little cottage for me to relax in.
On the whole, we enjoyed our stay. The cottage, surrounds, area and birding opportunities were fabulous. One small hitch is that the cottage is close to the staff quarters and the first night, they were quite noisy. The other nights were OK. Hence the reduced rating for location.
We arrived at the Pennygum Cottages late in the evening. The check-in time is 19:00. We pre-arranged with Pierre that we would only be able to arrive there later and we were told to just call when we got there. We stopped at the gate around 18:30, and called and none of our calls were answered. We drove around to an open gate and knocked on guests who had already checked in to show us where we could go. The door of the house we booked just stood open. We received no communication from the owners before or after our stay was booked. Other than that, our stay was very pleasant.
Highly recommended! Owners are friendly and helpful! Lovely cottage with feeling of love and care. Everything needed and more. Feels like a farm stay, friendly dogs, braai facilities, good WiFi. Africa Rooftop Tours picked us up at the gate for a splendid 4x4 tour in Lesotho up Sani Pass.

It was a very enjoyable experience. We were a large group and felt very welcome. The view is breathtaking and service was the best!
We had the most magnificent holiday enjoying the orchards and surrounding sites and activities. Our cottage was small, warm and comfortable. The only thing that was a minor frustration is the one bathroom door that knocks into the bedroom door, but the kids didn't mind and it wasn't a major issue. The views were spectacular and watching the sunset behind the mountains was just breathtaking! Amazing restaurants about 2 to 5 kilometers away in either direction and horse-riding just up the road, too. Plenty for the kids to do.
We had a very comfortable overnight, beautiful environment, staff member was friendly and helpful. Would have been nice to be welcomed by the owner but we believe they were still moving in having just taken over.
The hospitality of Paul and Sarah was fantastic. The cottage was clean and comfortable. There is a heater and electric blanket on the bed for the chilly nights.

Location very good and view is beautiful. Big house is comfortable, but needs some maintenance. House is fully equipped with sleeping facilities and cutlery, but cutlery is old and may now be replaced.
When we walked in it didn't look neat. The carpet was dirty and burnt and the bed was broken. Outside was not safe as there were no security lights, nor any other lights anywhere. Was pitch black every night. There was also no fence for the dogs. It says pet friendly, but why pay? It should actually be included in the amount you pay. Others also complained when they brought one dog. I never had such a problem with previous bookings. We will have to be very careful with booking in the future. I was actually embarrassed when my daughter-in-law and son told me about it.
The place is neglected. Security gate, door and window latches broken. There was no barbecue area as indicated in the advertisement. The one bed's mattress was only an inch thick fabric padding. The carpet in front of the fireplace is full of burn marks. Firewood was available at an exorbitant price.
On arrival at Pennygum Country Cottages we expected hospitality but were only greeted with a key. The person who does the gardening cleaned up leaves around us, but never with us.
It was a pleasant experience beautiful view of the Drakensberg, comfortable house with everything you need! Thank you for the friendly reception. We will come again!
The cottage was very convenient and in a beautiful environment.
I thought that R1700 for two nights was a little steep considering the bed in the lounge of the African Dream cottage is a futon bed which was so hard it felt like you were sleeping on a cement floor! The mattress was so thin you could feel the slates underneath. A new sleeper couch in the lounge would be a better option.
The welcome by John and Sarah was great and we enjoyed the stay at Pennygum. The facilities are great and well maintained. We enjoyed the visit and will be returning in the future.
Thank you for the opportunity to try something new or different in the Underberg area. Was out most of the time but enjoyed the accommodation. Did try to contact owner, but no answer and landline no longer exists. Would have preferred to have had contact with owner myself.
Unfortunately the accommodation is not for 5 adults but rather for 4 with a small child and this is not clear during the booking. There was a problem with the drainage of drain pipes, but it was fixed in a few hours.
Recommend covered parking. Cleaning service does not include dishes, this should be specified in advance not at arrival. Wood could be provided for first night. R50 per case is too expensive.

The place is very well furnished and located in such a good location. I would definitely recommend the place to everyone. It's very well furnished, tidy and there is simply a warm atmosphere from the time you stop there until you drive again. The welcome was so warm and friendly it really feels like you are visiting old friends or family. The view of the mountains and the tranquility also definitely make a difference.

Sarah at Pennygum is very friendly and welcomed us with open arms. The rooms were neat, the kitchen clean and the location was good. It's close to Underberg and is located in a very nice area.
It was really very nice. I would maybe just suggest they update the crockery and one of the sofas was just uncomfortable, but other than that it was really lovely.
Reception like I have never had in my life! Paul and Sarah mix comfortably with guests and are happy to share information about the area. The cottage was fully equipped and enough blankets to keep out the cold! It's a beautiful setting and easily accessible and close enough to places to eat for those days when self-catering isn't on the menu.
Hosts were friendly and helpful. Accommodation was clean, well-stocked and inviting. Setting was beautiful, with wonderful views of the mountains. Very convenient to activities in the southern Drakensberg.
Our stay at Pennygum was lovely, very relaxed. It was great to get out of the city. We arrived at night and when we woke up there was this most amazing view of the mountains, it was just beautiful. The days were warm and the nights were freezing! There's a lovely fireplace in the lounge, but the rest of the house is very cold. There were several hot water bottles that were just magic! Paul and Sarah were amazing hosts, very friendly and helpful. They made us feel so comfortable.
Very nice and tidy, friendly reception. My only criticism is that at R900 per night you at least expect double-layer toilet paper as well as coffee, Cremora and sugar for the morning. We only stayed for one night so we didn't bring all those items with us. We had to face the day without coffee.
I was proud to take an exchange student from Sweden to experience Underberg - a majestic and magical part of our wonderful country, where the colours and scenery adjust with every moment of the day.
Kitchen is small, but comfortably furnished. Love the radio in the bedroom. Nice triangular bath to relax in with a glass of wine.
We really enjoyed the visit in breathtaking natural beauty with a day visit to the Sani.
Will definitely visit there again.

Set in a lovely location and thatch is always fun and lends to the African experience. The owners are lovely, welcoming, warm people. We did book very last minute and were not really prepared for self catering. There was coffee and sugar but no milk or creamer. I do believe that more effort could be made with cleaning. The shower especially needs a really good scrub! Mattress and pillows were uncomfortable. Otherwise, great stay.
Really enjoyed the weekend away our company went on, for team-building.
