We had a great stay! It's a beautiful setting and even though the road was full of potholes, it was still worth it and much more peaceful than driving on the N1. We felt very welcome and at home, and the meal at the restaurant was delicious!

Philippolis Hotel is a beautiful local hotel with old world charm. The rooms are neat and clean with tasteful decor and a nice big bathroom. We spent the night in room 6 with the two single beds as on the website. There is also secure parking on site with a gate and gate guard. There is also a characterful bar in the hotel where you can relax after a long day on the road! The dinner was top notch! We had a great stay!

It was our first time in Philippolis. The owners of the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful. We had a great time with them and they gave us great advice on the best route to take to our next destination. The hotel itself is very neat and clean. The restaurant at the hotel is the only place in town to eat, so it is very convenient. The food was also very nice. We can certainly recommend this hotel.

The owners are absolute people of heart and they carry you on their hands. The perfect steak was prepared in front of me by the owners son. I would advise anyone to spend the night there. Good day, what a lovely visit. When we landed at Philippolis, the whole town was closed because Eskom had also landed. But the owners of the hotel had a plan, own generator, so we had water and power. Had a great meal in the hotel. Food was top notch.

We had a great overnight stop at the Philippolis Hotel - it is a bit off the main route but it was a beautiful drive to the village. The hosts are very welcoming, and the food served was really good. We had great steaks for dinner, and the options for a cooked breakfast were all good. Our room was a bit dusty on account of the thatched roof, but other than that everything was comfortable and clean.

Philippolis Hotel is a real gem that we would never have discovered if we hadn't strayed off the beaten path! The owners got the old building to regain its glory years. The meals there are a must and the hospitality something special. Although it was very cold, the electric blanket on the bed was almost unnecessary due to the quality duvet and blankets. The road, like all the roads in the Free State, is a challenge, but we were also warned in advance by Ian to drive slowly. All negative feedback we can give is that it was very noisy in the evening (but I have to add that it was the day before Christmas) and many of the people in the town were perhaps happy. I believe that under other circumstances it is not so noisy. I can definitely recommend the hotel. Please support the small towns.

Stayed in Philippolis because all the accommodation along the N1 was fully booked and woke us up too late. At least Ian had a place for us and we could eat at the hotel for the evening. It was very nice!
Owners are trying hard to modernize the hotel in an area that is somewhat away from the N1 main road and probably doesn't get many tourists. Very nice, however, for tourists who want to deviate a bit from the hustle and bustle.
We received very good service from the hotel only checked in very late as it was raining and the road there was full of potholes and water which made our drive there very difficult. Really feel sorry for the owners of businesses in the small town.

Philippolis is a small town but the people there have big hearts. This was our 2nd visit to the town although it is actually not on the main routes at all. The road there goes through Trompsburg and is narrow with many potholes. The surroundings are beautiful and the silence is what you need sometimes. The hotel is over 140 years old and improvements have already been made and are still being planned. The room (no 6) was beautifully redone and we had everything we needed. Dinner was served in the main building and beautifully prepared. There were also coffee and tea facilities in the room which is always welcome.
For an overnight stay it was just right, and the food and friendliness were great.

This is a must-stay if you are driving from CPT to Pretoria. We were greeted by the friendliest hosts and we had an amazing evening at the restaurant. The unit was very clean and was equipped with everything you need for a good night's rest. I will recommend Philippolis Hotel to anyone from families with young children to large groups of friends.

The hotel is a typical old-fashioned country hotel, and I believe there are many stories that have taken place there. We were well received and were accommodated in a spacious room. Our dachshund was also accepted, which is a big plus. In the evening a delicious meal was also prepared for us. We slept well.

We had a pleasant experience at the Philippolis hotel. The owners are very friendly and dinner in the restaurant was deliciously prepared. Rooms are very clean and tidy with very good quality towels and linen. Coffee and tea facilities are also available. The rooms are terribly cold. Philippolis is very cold in winter (minus temperatures). Fortunately, there were electric blankets on all the beds that could keep us warm. I would recommend a heater in the room and some rugs on the tiles to break the cold. The beds are very comfortable and at least we slept well and were well rested for our journey the next day. The hotel is going through a systematic restoration process, so there are areas that look old or dilapidated. The owners have been put back a bit due to the Covid restrictions. However, this does not take anything away from the good quality service and rooms. This is definitely a "diamond in the rough". Pay them a visit, even if it's just at the restaurant. Delicious food is served.

Food is always very tasty and the atmosphere and rooms are always lovely. This was my second time staying at the hotel. The owners are always friendly, considerate and make you feel at ease! It's very safe with parking behind near our room. Lawn and garden are also always maintained so it's lovely to linger outside barefoot after a long hot day while we wait for our delicious barbecue.

The restrictions regarding the covid-19 epidemic didn't even hinder the visit at all - the people overwhelmed us with hospitality and really went the extra mile to make our visit enjoyable.

Whilst the owners were very helpful and tried there was no staff on duty, so we had to wait over an hour for dinner, and whilst that was understandable I feel the fell short on communicating this fact to the dinners.

I was very pleased with the service! I didn't expect that. The room was perfect for us and specially chosen for us because we have a 6 month old baby, away from the other guests, and with a bath. The kitchen staff were even kind enough to let us use the hotel's microwave for the baby's bottles. I will definitely stay there again.
The hotel is in a beautiful old building. Some of the common areas may be a bit dated, but the rooms themselves are beautifully new and clean. The service was very good and everyone who works there is very friendly. We ate at the restaurant that night and the service was fast and the food was delicious. We had a family room and the layout of the room was maybe a bit funny, there aren't really doors or a curtain between the two rooms or even in front of the shower. Would still definitely recommend the hotel though.
