8 guests' feedbackHouse is very central, within walking distance if you want to visit the hotel for drinks or meals. The information leaflet behind the kitchen cabinet is not very visible. The steel braai stand may need to be replaced.
It was good for our purpose. Just sleeping over.
The house itself is old but the appliances (fridge, microwave, etc.) and the bathrooms are in good condition.
The cottage was charming and quirky to an extent (and we usually love more rustic accommodation, but there were a few things that weren't working including one of the geysers. There was also a note about drinking the water - tap water fine but drinking water provided in the fridge - and the water in the fridge had bits of mold floating in it. We found a host a little unhelpful and not super responsive. The housekeeper was lovely and helpful though.
We arrived in the winter cold in the dark and were welcomed into an old world cottage, with modern necessities, a fireplace ready to light, electric warm blankets, heaters, and a lovely shower. The place was romantic and perfect.
We were upgraded to Mascot without extra costs. Nice old house, comfortable beds with electric blankets, fireplace with wood and coal for the cold. Big kitchen and lounge. I would like to go back with the whole family.
Many items in the house are too old, no longer useful like the pots. Still, some of the old-fashioned articles have their own charm. It is very quiet, making it a peaceful resting place.
The rest of my group and I were very unhappy with the accommodation at Rhodes Steele's House and request that the full amount of R5530 be repaid. I initially booked 2 units in unit 1 to 11 for 4 people each for 2 nights (26 - 28 March). Steele's House then offered me another unit. We travel quite often and have slept at some great places we booked through LekkeSlaap, so we assumed that there is a certain standard units have to adhere to. The fact that this was an old house wasn't a problem. It is part of Rhodes' atmosphere. The kitchen, bath and toilet facilities could easily have been seen as acceptable because the house is so old. However the beds were shockingly substandard. Two of the beds were just not suitable for people to sleep on. Iron beds with very worn springs like the ones in hostels years ago. Mattresses extremely thin, sponge. The one bed had two planks, but because the mattresses were so thin, you could clearly feel the planks and the woman who slept on the bed rolled around the entire night. Another guest from Holland almost disappeared into the folds of the bed and ended up on the floor. The mattress on the double bed in the first room was old and worn. My wife and I slept on it and it made a noise with every movement. The second morning a rat scurried under the bed. The cleaner also didn't make the bed on the first morning. The worst part is that when we phoned Jill on the first morning to complain, she said she is aware that the beds are substandard and yet she still recommended it. We appreciate her moving the two ladies to another house, but they had to cope without towels there. The other beds weren't much better. The bedding was old and one of the blankets had massive holes. There were only 2 rolls of toilet paper in the entire house for 9 people for 2 days. Searching for more toilet paper in the bathroom cupboards my wife saw how dirty the rest of the house was. Full of old waste. We ate at Walkabout in Rhodes on the second evening and Rick showed us one of his houses that didn't have any occupants with a capacity of 14 people and beautiful linen for R225 per person per night. His R300 (we paid R307) per night-accommodation is apparently luxurious with king sized beds and all kinds of luxuries. To add to this R3000 was stolen from our unit. When we arrived the house wasn't locked and the key was inside the house. The house rules stipulated that we cold lock the house since the cleaners have duplicates of the keys. We thought that, since it is such a small town, everything would be safe. We went for a walk around the block after we arrived. The next day 3 of the ladies who had left their handbags in the house found that money had been taken from their wallets. When I confronted Jill about this she said that crime had become a problem in Rhodes. Rick told us that it was a major problem in Rhodes and that kids are used for this purpose since they can't go to jail. We saw to young kids riding their bikes around when we went for our walk. Please alert guests about this state of affairs and tell them to keep their houses locked. During our visit to Lesotho the service was excellent. Steele's House is a vintage house, but the facilities are lackluster. There is definitely better accommodation in Rhodes. The experience was unacceptable and we demand to be repaid. Other than that, we feel like this listing should be scrapped from the website until the accommodation is brought up to standard.
