Accommodation comprises 12 individually decorated en-suite bedrooms with a choice of either 2 single or 1 double bed, en-suite bathrooms fitted with a shower and a bath, hairdryer and amenities are provided, all rooms have tea-and-coffee making facilities, ceiling fans as well as air-conditioning. Every room has a private balcony with superb views up to the Khandizwe and Thlalabye hills of the Southern Kruger Park. Where guests can spot wildlife like lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo's, rhinos and much more.
There is a large thatched deck at the River's edge which is the ideal spot from which to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Bushveld. To virtually be on the river with a drink in hand whether game spotting or simply enjoying an awesome African sunset is a truly memorable experience. Alternatively, laze in the pool or bask in the Malelane sun whilst observing crocodile and hippo in the river below or retire to our comfortable lounge with a book when relaxing becomes hard work.
At River House, we do not have television or radio; news in our world is when a is leopard spotted by the watering hole.

River House is excellently located right on the Crocodile River in Malelane town. Clearly this guest house was an interesting place to stay in earlier years in terms of the decor and theme the place was decorated with. Unfortunately the place now feels old, run down and dusty. The breakfast room is dark and every wall is full of shelves with old trinkets that belong in a museum. The pool area is old and the pool itself needs attention. The whole place needs a decent "makeover". Loadshedding also dictated dinner times, with one night where it was expected to go to dinner by half past six. The place also doesn't have a generator or solar panels and with loadshedding scheduled every night from 7 - 9, there wasn't much to do in the dark except sit on the wooden deck overlooking the river. Also be warned that 10% of the total accommodation cost is expected to be paid as a tip for staff when you check out. On the plus side: Few places offer breakfast and dinner included in the price. Although the food and presentation is unimaginative, it makes the stay more comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the location is excellent and the deck on the river has beautiful views. For the "budget-conscious" traveler who will be satisfied with old, "rustic" accommodation: feel free to go. If you are looking for/are used to modern rooms and a place that shows tasteful decor: look elsewhere and pay more.
No water and no one even tried to manage the situation or communicate to guests. Dinner and breakfast average. Big surprise at the end when a "service fee" of 10% had to be paid on top of that and none of it advertised.
The location on the edge of the river is fantastic. The rooms are a little outdated, the AC is small for room size, and there was no plan for load shedding. The team who prepared and served the included dinner and lunch were lovely. We were surprised by the R160 bar tab for a brandy and coke and sparkling water, as well as the 10% gratuity / service fee charged on top of the rate.
It is a lovely, peaceful, antique laid out place with the most beautiful view over the river or Kruger with delicious food and friendly hospitality and service. We enjoyed it very much.
The deck overlooking the river is great, pity there is no service there. Guests must walk inside to the bar to get a drink. The place tries to be "quirky" and different, but poor quality and service shine through the quirkiness. Dinner served was so-called lasagne with two vegetables? No wine list is available but we ordered the "house wine" which was the only one available and is from Darling Cellars. At best, mediocre wine and exorbitantly priced at R275 a bottle. Because of load shedding the dining room was only open from 6 PM to 7 PM and service was rushed. In terms of safety, the internal stairs and outside pathways were both dangerous, someone will fall badly if they have not already. Exacerbated by the very poor lighting inside and outside. Also as we asked for the bill there was suddenly an additional "service charge" added that we were asked to pay, as well the exorbitant price of very mediocre wine at R275 per bottle was revealed. I felt ripped off.
Friendly staff, delicious meals, clean and tidy rooms, beautiful view, conveniently close to the Wildlife Park.
River House Guest Lodge is so well located as far as the Kruger National Park and Mozambique are concerned. It is very neat, clean and the service is great. Highly recommendable.
Enjoyed the delicious farm food. Chef excellent. Will come again. Hospitable and clean. Calm atmosphere. Good service.
Pleasant experience with hospitable management and courteous staff. Delicious food in a special place. Would be happy to recommend it to other travelers. The location is absolutely stunning next to the river.
The observation deck is fantastic and the place is very unique.
Top-shelf food, Afrikaans friendly, beautifully situated by the river, very comfortable accommodation.
The view from the porch was wonderful. The food was good. The whole place may just need a little attention, but with tourism suffering at the moment, this is perhaps understandable. Overall a very nice stay.
Lovely and peaceful with great views from deck and property. Great swimming pool. Dinner was superb. Accommodation however needs attention and is in need of some tlc.
River House Lodge's service is very friendly, helpful and tidy, we had such a good time, see you again soon.
Both Johans were extremely friendly and helpful. The meals were of excellent quality as well as the view from the deck.
Only problem is no safe off street parking. For SA it is a requirement. Will definitely recommend the place. Lots of interesting things in the house. Could also sit and relax for hours on the lookout. Service is excellent, food was very tasty. Absolutely value for money. Rooms are comfortable and very clean. Thank you to Johan for making our stay so enjoyable.
The photos online and what you get does not look the same.
We recommend River House Guest Lodge for people who want to spend a few days in a peaceful environment. Johan and his staff were particularly friendly and the meals were always very tasty. As the Lodge is very close to the Malelane Gate of the Kruger Wildlife Park, we visited the Wildlife Park a few times during our stay. It was also nice for us to relax on the deck and watch the animals that come to the river to drink. Thank you very much for a wonderful few days and we hope to visit you again in the future.
It was truly a surprise to experience true peasant hospitality on the banks of the Crocodile River. Johan and his team treated us to a three-course meal in the evening and a hearty breakfast. River House is tastefully furnished and if you like to appreciate some history and Africana, this is the place. The view was the biggest bonus and made the visit to River House something to remember! All downside: the guest house is in an extension and the parking remains a problem - the vehicles are parked in front of the guest house in the "driveway" and we would like to have them in a yard.
The accommodation is advertised as 5 star accommodation but has no stars, it is not up to standard for the price I paid.
Johan and Johan were very hospitable, served us a delicious breakfast and decorated our room beautifully. The wooden deck by the river is an amazing place to spend time, with manatees for company!
Had a wonderful stay. Johan and Daffey are so friendly, hospitable and helpful. We had a great time relaxing by the river and really enjoyed the view over the game garden. Breakfast was off the books and I can recommend the lodge anytime.
A special accommodation experience, 5 minutes from Malelane Gate of the Wildlife Park.
Johan was fantastic, made us feel very much at home.
