121 guests' feedbackIt was okay, just that we struggled with parking space.
Easy to book in. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Very nice for an overnight stay for travel and overnight stay, very friendly staff and good restaurant as well.
Clean, tidy room.
Very pleasant and such a peaceful feeling.
Yes, we had a nice stay. Only the one problem is that you can hear the people who come in late and leave early on the wooden floor of the upper floor.
During our short stay, Riverside Lodge was excellent service provided. Friendly colleagues make vacationers feel welcome to stay over before a long-distance departure the next day.
Slept well in newly upgraded room. Delicious bargain wagyu burger enjoyed in pub. Bridge traffic can be disturbing if you are a light sleeper.

We had a very nice stay.
Hotel room with a room above us heard the noise of guests. Renovation is needed.
Very nice, neat and clean and we had a nice stay. Maybe there could just be a bigger trash can in the kitchen and coffee mugs, otherwise all very pleasant.
The unit was clean and tidy. Would definitely recommend for an overnight stop. It was a shame that there were no braai facilities nearby. I would recommend that the bin in the kitchen should be a little bigger.
Bedding was clean and tidy. Think rates are a bit high for what you get.
We enjoyed the clean and safe lodge, and our dogs were nicely welcomed for the night too.
Can definitely recommend the place. There is everything you could need. It is clean and tidy. Very nice view of Orange River.
The accommodation is very comfortable, but it is not good value for money. It is slightly on the expensive side. The room and bedding are very clean and of good quality. The shower is large and comfortable, but the water temperature is almost impossible to set. Either you burn, or you freeze.
This was a very convenient stopover. The room was small, but for a quick one-night stay, it was more than sufficient. The aircon was very welcome. It does not have a fridge, but they were very accommodating to keep our cold items in the lodge fridge. I'm personally not a fan of "open plan" showers as you end up with water all over the floor, but I didn't have to reuse the wet towels, so I just managed. I would recommend a shower door or at the very least a curtain.
Beautiful location on the Orange River, delicious food and sleep! Staff friendly and helpful.
Went to play golf at Aliwal and was just looking for a place to stay which I found at a reasonable price.
Pleasant, bed was very comfortable.
For an overnight stay it offered everything we needed with a restaurant in the lodge.
The accommodation and surroundings were really worth it. The staff were very friendly and helpful (security included).
It's an awesome place. The new tiles in the bathroom are extremely slippery, and the bathroom mat makes it worse. The small wall next to the wall is a shin cutter.
We had a very nice stay and everything was in order. We will recommend you!
Yes, very nice stay and service was very good.
Yes, it was good. The building definitely needs maintenance, but everything was neat and clean. The parking is very small for larger vehicles. The arrangement on the porch was not sturdy.
Was pleasant. Place was clean and tidy. And service was prompt and friendly.
Very pleasant, lovely bed.
Very noisy. Place needs an uplift.
Place was clean. The room is very old and tired and needs a good update.
Riverside Lodge is a very good option to just stay overnight during a long trip.
Stay was okay but the aircon in the room was very noisy and had to be switched off to be able to sleep.
We only stayed 1 night at Riverside Lodge - 2 adults and 2 boys aged 10 and 12. Although the unit looks very nice and tidy when you walk in, there are a few things that bother. The sleeping accommodation for the boys was a very thin and small sleeper couch - not adequate at all and not what was advertised in the description. It is hardly suitable for 1 person. The shower was cold and the water never got hot - is there something wrong with the geyser? Other people in the resort were very noisy late into the night and again early the next morning - no attempt was made to silence them.
Air conditioning does not make it cold. I assume it's running out of gas. There was no hot water either.
Overall good experience. The rooms are very small, but neat. However, the air cooler box of the unit above us, which was attached to our unit, was faulty and made noise like a generator all night! Hope the problem is addressed, otherwise we will not use the accommodation again.
Units very small and basic. Our unit's aircon was leaking and my daughters unit had a bat. My husband had to catch the bat himself.
It's chaos there right now. Restaurant is not open for dinner, only bar area which appears more like a cafe. It also appears to be open for use by the public. River area is used for parking. There are building materials everywhere. Play area is neglected. Room is newly redone, but tiny for a deluxe unit.
Our overnight stay at Riverside Lodge was not too great. There was no water, so we could not bathe our children. The handyman came to fix the water, but made so much noise in the room above us that we couldn't get our children to sleep. After all this there was still no water. We couldn't even brush our teeth or flush the toilet. They wanted to move us to a room in another building, but there would be too few beds for us and our children. It is convenient that there is a restaurant on the premises and we were able to eat there even though it was a Sunday evening. The room was clean and tidy, the decor could perhaps be updated a bit. What people might just need to know is that it is a double story wooden building. So if you sleep in the lower rooms, you hear every step that the person above you takes. Not ideal if you have small children who need to sleep early or if your upstairs neighbors drive very early the next morning. I don't think we will stay there again.
Aliwal North is not a nice holiday town, but if you have to stay over, it is probably one of the better options. The chalet and bedding were very neat and clean, but the bed was rock hard, like an ironing board. There is no access to the river; it is then with bushes and hedges. There is only a common braai for everyone, which is full of construction equipment. The pool is dirty and the restaurant is more like a tavern open to the public as well. Cars also hoot all night as they cross the border, right next to the lodge. There is absolutely nothing to do but sit in your room.
Parking space for vehicle with pram not available at all.
Wonderful. Definitely stay here again.
Our first choice when it comes to overnight accommodation.
We were very impressed with the place and had a great time staying and visiting. The children had a lot of fun swimming too.
Fantastic service, comfortable beds, tasty food, nice location.
Very friendly service. Good value for money. Clean and tidy. Staff are friendly and make an effort to make you feel at home. Restaurant on site although we didn't use it. Menu for everyone's tastes and reasonable prices.
Very tidy, the location was perfect, picture perfect next to the Olifants River.
Service is good. Restaurant food was excellent. Comfortable stuff.
Can you please arrange one double bed for couples, not two separate single beds please.
The restaurant has the tastiest burgers for me, you get the feeling you want to stay longer. People very friendly. Will go again next year to stay longer. Really nothing to complain about.
Good for an overnight stay, but not really intended as a self-catering unit. Very small fridge and the space in unit is very limited.
Hospitality and good food.
Room is comfortable, clean and tidy with a beautiful view! As nature lovers, it makes up for the slight lack of facilities. However, as business travelers we have a need for a writing desk. A small, compact bar fridge could also keep our road food cold for the next day, but definitely recommend, enjoyed the stay.
The river is beautiful. The gardens are lovely. The place is quiet. It is an oasis!
We spent the most comfortable evening. People always so warm and friendly.
Helpful staff, clean basic rooms but noisy due to taxis across the road at an all-night filling station.
Nice stay. Just not a lot of room for toddlers. Terraces make it difficult.
Had a great time, was only disappointed with the sofa bed in the "Disabled Friendly" unit. View is lovely, the parking was just a bit tricky and difficult to master.
Very nice place to stay by the river.
Our room was nice and big, food in both restaurants was good, very nice curio shop with a large selection of sweets and jams.
We had a pleasant overnight stay at Riverside Lodge. The staff were friendly and allowed for a late check-in. The unit was well designed, the only downside was the shower which did not have a shower door resulting in the whole bathroom floor being covered in water after taking a shower (we stayed in the modern unit with a partial river view). Overall we were impressed with the facilities and the staff's friendliness.
The lodge is beautifully maintained and next to the Orange River. Fortunately, a generator is available during power outages.
Very nice. The only problem was that, given the weather, there was nowhere else we could take our 3-year-olds but to the pub/restaurant, which was not particularly child-friendly. We had planned to take food to the play area, but that was not possible. The setup is still good and it was a nice place to stop.
We had a lovely stay. I would recommend the Riverside Lodge for an overnight stay.
The room itself was not bad at all, neat and clean, good for a one night stay. The only problem we had that wasn't pleasant was that we wanted to go out to dinner. They have a beautiful dining area, but we were told to eat at the Pub&Grill. That place is not great, you have to make your own order at the counter and it just wasn't pleasant. At least they offered to bring the food to our room. If Riverside Lodge wants to make it more convenient for their guests, they must also offer dinner. Even though the room wasn't too bad, after all they could have had shampoo or shower gel, only a bar of soap was on the sink.
Very neat and nice stay.
Riverside Lodge is suitable for overnight stays. The rooms are very basic, but neat and clean. The bathrooms need some attention. It's old and neglected.
Would definitely recommend.
The location is very relaxing with views of the river.
The little things will need some attention. Our unit's air conditioning, fan and TV did not work. Not from the lights either. What we ordered in the restaurant was not up to standard. Especially the steak I was looking forward to was of poor quality and the preparation was also lacking. The service and reception we received in the restaurant was very good.
The lodge is very conveniently located for an overnight stay between the Garden Route and Gauteng. Air conditioning in the room was a plus. The facilities are a bit old.
Right next to the river, had a gorgeous view and a nice balcony to enjoy the view on. The restaurant closed extremely early, unfortunately. The reception staff were a bit rude.
I would say the room is just big enough for one person. There were two of us and only one person can move at the foot of the bed. We also didn't have enough room for our bags. I will not write home about the restaurant's food. It's below average. I don't mind paying for good food. But that is ridiculous. Breakfast was also very expensive.
Good location next to river, with restaurant and take aways next door.
Extremely friendly and helpful management, reception and security!
In the double storey you can hear every movement above you.
My stay was very short, so I am unable to comment much. I arrived late at night and left early the next morning.
"Partial river view" was very partial!
Other Guests and police must respect each other's space and more amenities such as plates to help yourself.
We had a very nice stay. They made us feel so at home and also accommodated us with our woofie.
The room lacks a fridge, you can't keep anything cold. Put a small dish towel in the room if you make coffee and you spill by accident then you can clean up. There is no clean water for the boiler, my husband left there with an upset stomach, the water tastes brackish. The bridge that separates the provinces is an eyesore with everyone throwing their rubbish there and everyone sitting there. The car guard is standing there with a sambok then there must definitely be a problem. The view of the river is poor with the long grass. The hot spring in town looks bad, the water is brown, you can't see the bottom of the pool. Definitely just a town for driving through and not for tourists. The building outside needs attention.
No fridge, shower curtain, air rail. Little privacy. Car far from unit to unpack luggage. Clogged shower drain. Reading lights impractical. No alarm clock in the morning to make tea. If only very basic.
The place is really just for sleeping over. The bathroom's water overflows into the room and wets the carpets. They are working on upgrades, but there is still a lot that needs to be fixed before I will stay there again.
The aircon didn't work, the shower was too unsanitary to use, the bed was not comfortable to put it mildly, and the food at the attached restaurant abysmal. The setting was great however.
I was booked in a chalet 32 where the bathroom needed attention. the ceiling was peeling and the trap door was falling apart. It appeared that the shower was last used 6 months ago. The generator was right next to my room and ran for 2 hours, disturbing my sleep when I had to get up early and leave the following morning. Where i was asked to park was on the perimeter of the establishment and there were big gaping holes in the fence, not making me feel at ease.
The people of Aliwal are awesome. The atmosphere at the lodge so peaceful. We enjoyed it very much.
See stars.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely surroudings. Enjoyed our stay.
Our room was comfortable, clean and tidy. The reception staff met us very kindly and we were accompanied to unlock our room. Great service, will definitely recommend and use them again.
Room was neat and tidy. Bit of a noisy fridge though, which we had to unplug so we could get some sleep.
The Lodge and its staff and management are friendly and very helpful. The management's interaction is also personal and does not rely on communication by their employees. The lodge is perfect because you don't have to leave the premises for anything. There is a restaurant and bar on site. You can buy meat on site if you prefer to cook yourself. The lodge is also on the Orange River and right across from a gas station which makes it very convenient. The sleeping place is neat and clean. We had a very pleasant experience with them and would stay there again.
Service was friendly and fast. The room very comfortable and clean.
Friendly staff.
Thank you, place clean and tidy, would recommend for overnight facility.
Beds and bathroom are neat.
Just sleep over for me.
Rooms are neat and functional, good service, go out of their way to accommodate, excellent restaurants on site.
Bathroom needs attention- room 24. Filled in and submitted at reception. Shower head was completely broken - water gushed out everywhere. Door does not close properly. There is also no place to hang towels in the bathroom, just a little by the back door.
Nice to have a cold beer overlooking river and bridge, recommended.
The view of the river and the bridge are splendid.
The location of the lodge is good, and very quiet next to the river. The rooms we stayed in are very old and in need of renovation. For the cost per night it does not justify the quality of rooms we stayed in.
Although the hotel is old, everything was very neat and clean with friendly staff.
The restaurants were disappointing. One was not open for dinner although website menu of oxtail etc. advertised. The cafe-type bar/restaurant that was open had a disappointing menu. We had to look for alternative dinner place. Breakfast was outrageously expensive for what you get. Better and tastier to enjoy a Wimpy breakfast across the road.
We would have liked to have been able to have a fridge in the room.
The evening lights shine into the rooms. The room is too brightly lit during the night to be able to rest and sleep properly.
The unit we were initially allocated was not handicap-friendly for my wife who walks with two crutches. But they immediately helped us with alternative, similar accommodation. Breakfast was extra, but it was worth it. There is a restaurant next to the resort that serves dinner.
Weaknesses: Little room to move. Suggest hanging wardrobe be removed and replaced with open clothes racks and clothes hanger rack. Only one bedside light and bedside table are a hindrance. The security is insufficient. The 24-hour gate guard sits in the cubicle furthest from the entrance gate and someone can easily walk in there without being seen. The exit gate is locked with a padlock and the gate guard must come and open it. When we wanted to go out that night, the room phone didn't work and we had to walk to the gate guard to get the exit gate unlocked. When we left in the morning the exit gate was open all the time and so any person could walk in there. Suggest that the gate automatically open and close again when a vehicle exits.
Room was a bit shabby. Air conditioner didn't work, kettle plug was temperamental, bedside lamps were not plugged in (and an inaccessible plug point behind the bed), terribly cheap coffee, toilet didn't flush well, no door on bathroom (it was a disabled-friendly room). It was bitterly cold in the room. Double bed was small. Definitely not a family room as advertised. If we had children with us I don't know where they would have slept. However, the room had a lovely river view and was pet friendly.
Noise level high from road. The pool was covered in leaves but swimmable. Neighbours talking echoed until after 1 am.
Resort looks a bit neglected. Pool dirty, the drains rotten so we had a smell robbing our room the whole time. Place definitely needs some attention.
I used to stop at Riverside on business trips and always loved the place. Unfortunately, this institution is no longer what it used to be. The price of R1111. 00 (single person per night) is what you get: No breakfast. A room located away from the river front against the wall - with a busy and noisy dirt road behind it. The room is basic, without a small fridge and with only 2 working DStv channels (one of which is eTV). The furniture was outdated and the room smelled slightly of smoke. A cramped shower and leaky faucets in the sink. In addition, I had to open and close the entrance gate myself several times as I entered and exited (I don't have a problem with this but it is unsafe - in the past the gate was manned by a guard). The bar's food is pleasant but expensive and the staff were not terribly helpful.
Rooms are very small.
See stars.
Independent market company.
The units did not have refrigerators, cutlery, etc. Nor a trash can. After our arrival I asked for a room with a fridge where at least we had a separate bedroom as the unit we were allocated did not have a fridge nor a separate bedroom. The receptionist was kind enough to accommodate the meat we brought along in their freezer. The security officer was friendly and helpful. The first unit's parking was not secure at all. The second unit's was better. I will definitely think twice before staying there again.
Spoke to the owner and asked to bring in an extra bed, indicated that he could not, because he did not have the staff to do so. My daughter who weighs 53 kg walked up and down stairs herself to a 2nd room he offered very far from no 10 we got and carried a mattress to no 10. Our 2 wives and one child. We paid for a third person, so reception explained but there is no bed for the person! No, never again!
The restaurant's meat quality can compete with the best in SA! Don't drive past there without eating a piece of rump and enjoying the view over the Orange River!
For R1010 per night I would have expected better. Dirty walls and carpets. No fridge. Old fashioned bathroom. Hole in floor. Nails stick out in stairs. Balcony feels unsafe.
