Our stay at the Rockwood Mountain Lodge was absolutely magical! It was an exciting drive up the 4x4 track to the house. Thanks Jabu for making sure we got up there safely! Our bike rack took a bit of a beating but nothing that can't be fixed. There are a few hikes, our favourite being the waterfall hike (Godwini Falls walk) from the Forest Lodge. Beautiful scenery! Loved the river crossings and bridges. We also accidentally found ourselves hiking the Escarpment Trail hike on our way back down from the waterfall hike. It is not for the faint-hearted, and most definitely for the fit and adventurous. If you want to face your fear of heights, do attempt this one. We were pulling ourselves up the mountain by ropes at one stage and got a bit lost when the trail disappeared, but luckily a phone call to Sue, the Lodge manager, and we were on our way to the top of the escarpment and found our way back on the mountain biking trails. 4 hours and 50 minutes later (12 kms). What an adventure for sure! We ran out of water on our first part of the hike, but luckily we could drink from the streams in the forest, so all was good. My boys are 11 and 13 and managed the hike, but would not recommend it for small children or unfit persons. The mountain biking was a bit difficult on the mountain lodge side as there are quite a few nasty hills. Lovely forest trails but beware the massive spider webs. We canoed on the dam (the bigger dam near the Forest Lodge). It was lovely. Also did a bit of fishing at the dam. The Mountain Lodge is really cosy and peaceful. Loved waking up to birds chirping in the mornings. The Green Egg was also a treat to braai in! We had no cellphone signal at the house. But there were the occasional spots where you could get network. The kitchen was well-equipped and we didn't feel like we were missing anything.

"Circles in the woods."

The Mountain Lodge is highly recommended, but note that you can only get there by 4x4. After all, it is worth it because once you reach your final destination you are surrounded by trees on a hilly terrain. Hiking and biking trails are accessible right from your front door, making it the perfect place for the adventurous. There is also a beautiful waterfall and pond that can be reached by foot. Also, just be prepared for 4 seasons in one day - after all, you find yourself in the forest! The unit is very well equipped and the manager(s) are always there to help with whatever you may need. Cell phone signal and internet is limited, but it gives you a proper break from the busy city. Highly recommended and will definitely be returning to finish our rounds in the woods.

We stayed in Rockwood Mountain Lodge. It is located high on the mountain in the forests. It can only be reached with a 4x4. So if you are looking for a place where you can be alone and quiet, then I would like to recommend it. My family and I are bird watchers and spent hours identifying the birds in the forests. Also enjoy the walking paths. Just take your own lights, the solar power is only a little bit, but otherwise everything is there. I will stay here again.

Now this really is a house in the woods. 8 km from the nearest people. No cell phone reception. We were impressed with the beautiful log house - spotlessly clean with everything you need.

We had a great time, the house is very well appointed ─ maybe guests should be informed of the fact that the accommodation is quite a distance from the farmhouse.

It was the nicest and most peaceful weekend we've had in a long time! Everything exceeded our expectations. The accommodation was beautiful and had everything we could need. The cleaning staff were wonderful and played with our baby girl so much that she was sad when they walked every day! We will definitely be back next year, but with more people and will definitely book the bigger house! Today we still tell everyone who wants to hear about our nice weekend and absolutely great stay!
