We try to visit Clarens once a year. We've never felt the need to look further than the Royal Coachman. The Royal Coachman not only has everything a family needs for a stay, but is neat, clean and well located. The trout pond and surrounding farm, with a view of surrounding mountains only adds to the tranquility.

What an amazing getaway! From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by crisp air, stunning views, and breathtaking scenery. It was pure bliss—a long weekend our family will treasure as one of the best. Even though it was the coldest day of the year, the cozy fireplace, underfloor heating, and a glass of red wine made it a wonderfully warm and relaxing retreat.
The lodge is 6.3 km from Clarens and not 36.1 km as the directions say. Very nice, would go again anytime, just the WIFI you advertise, it's there but you need a code.

The beautiful view is soul food and The Royal Coachman is fantastic for a quiet family weekend or a romantic getaway. Big fireplaces and no TV or internet to distract you. There is indeed very good cell phone reception. The view is truly breathtaking and our boy was always busy discovering nature and playing next to the pond.
Had a very nice holiday. Just two concerns. 1) No gate at entrance to yard. 2) A fee for the cleaner is kind of expected from the guests. For the price being asked for the unit, I personally think that something like this should not even be mentioned in the guest guide; it must be included in the price.
Our whole family (teens included!) were very impressed with the lodge. The house is impeccably neat and clean. The kitchen is equipped with everything a reasonable person would need. There is even a set of proper kitchen knives, with a knife sharpener. The house is properly cleaned every day. The underfloor heating and heated towel rails are a very pleasant addition. WiFi and mobile reception are unnecessary with the silence and beautiful nature around you. The view every morning on the dam and surrounding mountains is worth the price alone. The lodge is right between town and Golden Gate. We will definitely visit again in the summer. Highly recommended.

Royal Coachman met our expectations in every way. It is 7 km outside Clarens on the way to Golden Gate, where there are many day walking routes. The pond that is right in front of the house is home to various waterfowl and is full of fish, for the avid fly angler. We enjoyed the silence, nature and tranquility and will definitely go back. The accommodation was clean and tidy and met all our needs.

The cottage is in one of the most beautiful places in Clarens, and is excellently located between the town and Golden Gate. The house is spacious and very well supplied with all necessities, and is very tidy. This is my favorite place to stay in Clarens.

We are disappointed in the fact that Royal Coachman advertises that trout fishing is available but found out 1 day before arrival that their pond has not been stocked with any trout for at least 4 years. We feel this is false advertising because they state on their website that it is seasonal. This is one of the main reasons why we booked there for this time.
The Royal Coachman is a little piece of heaven on earth, if I could buy that place to live there permanently I would. It's peaceful and paints beautifully.

If you want to get away and just relax with a beautiful setting on a lake, then this is the right place. The cottage has a fireplace in the lounge and main bedroom and has underfloor heating to keep you warm on the cold winter nights. The beds are comfortable. The cottage is cleaned outstandingly by Jamina every morning. All around an outstanding experience. Just note there is little to no cell reception, which suited us just perfectly.

We really enjoyed our stay at Royal Coachman. The house was clean and tidy and all the Covid-19 rules were in place. I can recommend the Royal Coachman to everyone. It is just outside the busy Clarens and not near other houses or the street, it is dead quiet. It is very peaceful and beautiful. One can rest decently and spend quality time with friends and family. I enjoy the no cell reception and no TV.
Unbelievably beautiful place. Would love to walk around the pond, but grasses are overgrown. Went to buy fishing gear, but no trout only koi fish in pond. Road but rough if car is low, is repaired after rain. Sorry no laundry facilities if staying for long periods. Here one's batteries are recharged and we see a chance for what 2022 brings us. Housekeeper friendly and works so neatly. We were surprised that he came to work on his holidays too - what a bonus!

We were two families and really enjoyed the visit. The neighbourhood is beautiful and they have a neighbourhood watch patrolling the area at night for safety. The amenities in the house are very convenient.
The owners rely on the view but fail in clean bedding and finer detail. The road to the cottage was an off-road experience that will damage a normal car. It was not worth the money we spend and that's very sad.

The Royal Coachman, in our view, is the place to stay in the Clarens area. Only about 6 km or so from town and the view from that lovely deck is the stuff puzzles are made of! The clever design of the house makes all the areas much roomier than expected. We had a wonderful 2 night stay and will definitely be back because two nights is just not enough. Highly recommended.

Absolutely delicious without TV, internet catch-up and didn't even miss it. The silence "noises", but it's wonderful. The cooler weather in the Eastern Free State also made it much more bearable.
The Royal Coachman was even more beautiful than advertised. The house was clean and cosy, the view was amazing, and the birds were welcoming. We had a great stay, even with two kids under 5. Being next to the water, we didn't even have problem with bugs. Having a little car go over the bumpy dirt road coming in was a bit risky, but it was fine going slow. We want to come back!

This is the most peaceful place, here it feels like time stands still, it's so quiet you can hear yourself breathing, if you really want to rest this is the place to stay, we caught 6 rainbow trout fish, and let them go again , the house is wonderfully warm with fireplaces and underfloor heating and delicious sherry. A lovely cottage with everything you need and a beautiful, peaceful setting. Quiet and relaxing. We loved the place. Although it is self catering, some salt and spices are always convenient if you stay for a short period. But we enjoyed our stay very much!
We only stayed 1 night. Everything in the house was beautiful and neat. Wood was ready in fireplaces and mist was hanging over the trout dam in front of the house. The beds and the pillows are comfortable. I will go back again.

We enjoyed 5 lovely days near Clarens. The house is perfectly located, close to the town but still you feel like you are staying far away on a farm! The cows graze around the house and the birds are in abundance - a beautiful view. Just bring mosquito repellents and extra entertainment for smaller children.
Coming back from the Royal Coachman leaves one with mixed emotions, on the one hand the body and mind are thankful for the break in such a perfect place, but on the other hand you are sad to be leaving at all.
Royal Coachman is very well equipped, well looked after and very tidy. The fireplaces and underfloor heating make it lovely in the winter and the surroundings are very peaceful and beautiful. One thing that could perhaps be upgraded is the braai, which is somewhat small, but otherwise there is nothing wrong. We had a very nice stay.
The place is beautiful, except for the cookware / pots and pans that are in very poor condition. All the teflon is chipped and the aluminium pots should be replaced with proper pots and pans.
The house is situated in a beautiful place with a wooden deck that is built over the dam. Neat rooms with all of the amenities that you need. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything that you need. The rooms have fireplaces that are nice for the cold evenings. There is a loft with 2 single beds. The welcoming craft beers in the fridge were a nice surprise. I didn't have fishing rods but saw big carp at night in the dam. The braai outside is a little small and tattered and can be updated. The CD player has seen better days and can be replaced. Other wise everything was clean and neat and we enjoyed the stay a lot. It is a little expensive for one family (2 adults and 1 child under 3). We payed R2400 for the night. If you are 2 families the price will come down per family.
It was an incredibly beautiful place to stay that was fully equipped. One of our friends who went along was a chef, and he was able to find everything in that kitchen to prepare delicious dishes for us. The decor is very classic and "homely". Despite the dam being very dry due to the severe drought that SA has experienced, it was still a beautiful place to stay, experience the silence and recharge our batteries.
Royal Coachman is a recommendation for anyone, fireplaces, heated floors and the most beautiful view over the Drakensberg Mountains and a huge farm dam for fishing. See you soon!

Royal Coachman's house is so well-equipped that it feels like your own home. Here you'll find peace and quiet! The cleaner was on time every morning. It was very easy to find according to the SMS directions. The photos on the website are not deceiving, what you see is what you get. More than enough bedding and bath amenities.
