The cool formal sitting room is great for curling up with a good book or socializing, and there is a second African-themed 'Pajama Lounge' on the first floor.
The large swimming pool looks down from the deck over the tall indigenous coastal dune forest. The wrap-around Victorian verandah is where breakfast is served in good weather, or alternatively in the formal dining room.
The guest house sports 208 species on our bird list. It is easy to imagine yourself inside a giant aviary with no fences. Birding groups are welcome and can enquire for special rates.
The guest house is situated 118 km down the N2 South from Durban, and 2.3 km from the Umtentweni swimming beach. It is close to all amenities and 9 world-class golf courses.

Open the old house's large wooden frame windows without burglar bars and look out on the river, a forest and very far a bit of the sea. Listen for the osprey and other bird species, especially different loons. It felt like a vacation to me, even though it was a business trip.
We had a very nice stay. The people are very hospitable and helpful. Quiet and beautiful area. Will definitely recommend. Really lovely place and people!
The reception at Royston Hall was warm and the accommodation exactly what we were looking for. Breakfast on the veranda was only beaten by the beautiful view! Service was excellent.
The owners went out of their way to help us when our car was too low and we couldn't get to the guest house. The room and bathroom are particularly spacious. The view is breathtaking and the breakfast (included) exquisite. There are many stories about the house and previous owners which I found particularly interesting. Unfortunately we spent little time there, we met our children for dinner.
Royston Hall Guest House is a large stately mansion in luxurious Victorian style with a rich history spanning over 130 years. It provides ideal safe accommodation in the peaceful, plant-rich environment of the Hibiscus Coast which makes you completely forget about the city bustle and crime of Gauteng. In the morning an excellent breakfast is served on the Victorian veranda in good weather, otherwise in the dining room or library with their beautiful antique furniture. The 118-year-old Oregon floors, stair railings, doors and window frames throughout the house create a special, honey-warm atmosphere and compliment the high ceilings that also trap the heat from outside. Beautiful antique furniture is effectively placed throughout the library, dining room and two sitting rooms. A four-poster bed and other copper beds in the five bedrooms as well as comfortable spacious bathrooms "en suite". Sinks installed in antique cabinet surfaces. You don't want to leave the comfortable Victorian bath or shower because you feel one with nature outside through the sliding windows of the last century. Often in the late afternoon, a hornbill comes knocking on the window to disturb the peace. The huge, soft bed's headboard and the picturesque view of the estuary and forest as soon as the heavy brocade blinds are drawn. With Wi-Fi access, DStv and other facilities in the spacious, comfortable, tidy room is a pleasure. The balcony outside overlooks the blue swimming pool below from where you can peer over the cliff to the deep indigenous forests far down in the valley where the osprey calls over the Umzimkulu estuary and on the horizon lies the Indian Ocean. The Tweni swimming beach, part of the beautiful Hibiscus Coast, is about 2 km from Royston Hall with picture-perfect subtropical plants and trees on either side of the winding road. Blue waves and a vast clean sandy sky and safe rocks suddenly lie before you. Good restaurants, supermarket and liquor store in the immediate vicinity. Royston Hall is one hour's drive south along the N2 from Durban and close to many other beaches such as Shelly Beach, Margate, Uvongo, quality shopping centers and 11 world class golf courses. This outstanding guest house is the place to stay from where you can butter your bread on both sides and satisfy all tastes and moods!
I would definitely visit Royston Hall again and stay much longer.
We enjoyed our stay because the environment and location made it worth it, but my honest opinion: R1500 p/night is certainly too much money for the standard that is maintained. The reasons for this are: There was no toilet freshener, a sink plug, coffee, biscuits or a power plug for the hairdryer. You couldn't use the shower at all, no handle and the door rubbers were completely detached from the door. Our room was not cleaned at all on January 1, 2016, and if it had been communicated in advance, no problem. However, we accept that everyone handles their guest house in a different way, and if this is the standard, nothing wrong with that.
What a lovely surprise to arrive at this beautiful place. Historical, very neat and friendly staff. Will definitely book here again. Highly recommendable.

For parents heading to Sportweni to support their children, we recommend Royston Hall Guest House. It's conveniently located from the Sportweni grounds, yet far enough to get away from it all. The guest house is a beautifully restored house overlooking the Mzimkhulu Lagoon. Ria is an excellent hostess and serves a breakfast that will stay with you for a long time. Definitely worth considering for a great getaway!
The house is beautiful and so are the surroundings. Friendly and hospitable owners. A little attention could be given to the general cleaning of the rooms.
