Rus 'n Bietjie is a rustic self-catering home with painted cement floors, a few cracks due to age, and has quite some character, as some of the door frames are from old boats and thus a bit lower than normal. There are 3 double bedrooms, the first room has a double bed and good sea views, the second room has 3 single beds and good sea views and the third room has 3 single beds and mountain views. It can sleep max 8 people, but is ideal for 6 people. The bathroom is fitted with a toilet, washbasin and bath and a recently added shower. Please note that the toilet is slightly lower than usual. There is an outside toilet of normal height which is useful especially when having a braai.
The kitchen has good sea views and is fully equipped with a 4-plate stove and oven, a microwave, a fridge with freezer combination, a toaster, kettle and all the utensils for self-catering purposes. Tea, coffee with a bowl of rusks are provided, as well as washing liquid, salt and pepper. The open plan sitting and dining room area has a small library and TV. There is an OVHD decoder but should you require Dstv, please bring your own decoder. We also have WiFi.
The best part of Rus 'n Bietjie is probably the large undercover stoep and braai area overlooking the ocean. Not only does one see the ships going to and fro, but whales and dolphins are often seen from here. The hammock on the veranda lets you do some sea scanning in comfort!
The plot is pet-friendly, upon prior arrangement.
Rus 'n Bietjie is not everybody's cup of tea, but those that appreciate something different, close to nature and beautiful sea views, love Rus 'n Bietjie and many consider it their favourite holiday destination.

108 guests' feedbackThis is a fantastic nice place to stay. We appreciate it and thoroughly enjoyed the rustic. The cottage has character! The accommodation is 100% and absolutely met all our requirements. You hear and smell the sea on your doorstep. All the attractions are close and also the shops and places to eat. Thank you very much for all your effort and kindness. We truly appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts. It was such a surprise to find out that we have a mutual friend in Marita.
We had a great time and stay.
My dogs and I really enjoyed our stay at Rus 'n Bietjie! Best ocean view and a large yard properly fenced for pets. A real authentic fisherman's cottage that is equipped with everything one needs. One of the nicest places I've ever stayed. Really felt like vacation!
It is a very beautiful and peaceful place to break away, kick off your shoes and enjoy the silence of the ocean.
Extended our stay because we had such a good time.
Very nice stay! "Rustic" house exactly as presented and expected! Nicely equipped with attention to detail. Thank you for kind support and for allowing us to stay a day longer.
Absolutely loved our visit.
Perfectly located by the sea.
It was as I expected. The hammock was not there and I was looking forward to it. There weren't any dishwashing lumps. Outdoor chairs were badly rusted and broke. Everything else was fine.
Very peaceful, old house but cosy and nice.
Very convenient. Everything is there in the kitchen and everything is tidy. The location is fantastic, you can hear the waves when you sleep.
Such a lovely, real beach house. Just loved our stay.
Will definitely go again, apart from the fact that the place is perfectly located, the hostess is a salt-of-the-earth person.
Our stay was awesome. We really liked the location and relaxed feeling of the house and area.
The house is an old fisherman's cottage, it is a lived in cottage, don't expect it to be modern, walls are a bit peeling, but it is a spacious house with a gas stove and gas geysers which is very important, especially with load shedding We sat and looked at the sea, slept and listened to the sea, very special.
Really cute, rustic cottage. We were warm despite freezing weather.
Comfortable, clean and cosy accommodation.
If you're in to nostalgia then Rus 'n Bietjie is your place. A well aged cottage with modern touches adapted over the years. If you require a simplicity, no bells and whistles accommodation, right by the sea and close to other natural beauty such as Cape Nature, then this is the place to be.
It was an incredible experience. The house has years of character, you can feel the stories the walls tell. The cottage is wonderfully warm which was surprising because it was cold the night we stayed there. The waves you hear at night were great and the light tower light shines every 10 counts at the bathroom window which was fantastic. We will definitely use the place again if we visit the Southern tip of Africa.
Nice old house with lots of character and nice sea view from the veranda. Very clean and there is everything you need. The most delicious rusk in a container on the table. It just disappeared quickly. Thank you Anna-Marie.
It's a home away from home.
Have a nice life, little one. Comfortable beds, everything you need. Just pack your clothes and food!
Rus 'n Bietjie is certainly a quaint little cottage with everything one would need for a restful stay. The view of the ocean is lovely. The location is perfect and close to all amenities. Attention to the overall cleanliness would most certainly make Rus 'n Bietjie the perfect getaway cottage.
Been coming to Struisbaai/Agulhas from childhood in the seventies with my parents. Just love both these towns. Rus 'n Bietjie is a rustic place with beautiful sea views while having a braai on the stoep. Only 1 key to access this house with no burglar bars!
The location was lovely, and so was our experience with the host. It's a very well-equipped cottage. We had a small issue with the mould on the curtains and in the kitchen cupboards though.
Rustic, seaside cottage, wonderful to watch the waves and passing ships from the stoep. Wind-free braai area. Inside toilet need to be raised it is ridiculously low. Outside shower needs a new head. Will we visit again, definitely yes!
The cottage is as described. There is a lot of work needed on the cottage, but the view and comfort outweigh all gaps. We had so much fun sitting on the porch and looking at the sea while the fire was burning. Although the house is pet friendly and our two dogs had the time of their lives I must mention that the site is not completely closed. Other dogs may be able to escape. We kept our dogs inside the house for the short shopping trips. Other than that it was a very nice experience!
Nice, we will use them again!
Let your hair down, kick your shoes aside and just find yourself again. Everything you expect and more. You go to sleep with the waves breaking and wake up like that. The owner, Annemarie, is wonderful and brings out the human in you. Rest a little is a recharge, rest and soul-finding place that you don't want to let go at the end of your time. Everything is there. Just go find yourself again.
For those who want to relax is perfect place.
See stars.
This is one of the best vacation destinations I have ever been to. The facilities are excellent. Of all 4 places I visited on vacation this had the best internet. The residence is fully equipped and the hostess's service and help is excellent. It gives that nice holiday feeling and is more than fully equipped. I would like to buy the place as good as it is. Thank you very much for the privilege of being a customer. If I come back I will definitely use Rus 'n Bietjie again
Cottage is very basic but comfortable.
The house is close to the sea, it's quiet and peaceful. The children and dogs went for long walks and were able to have fun, cook and sleep peacefully. Will visit again.
We went to Rus 'n Bietjie to do a work from home away from home. The internet is good and at the end of the day we were able to go for long walks along the rocks. They are also pet friendly. We will be back.
Rus 'n Bietjie is a wonderful place to relax. Well located close to everything around the Southern tip of Africa. The environment is quiet and peaceful. One can see that this is a house where family and friends have visited for years and it has a homely atmosphere. I liked the "antiqueness" of it and makes you think back nostalgically to days long gone. The einar gave personal attention and was always available for questions and more information. I will definitely visit Rus 'n Bietjie again.
Rest A little is something a little different, but special. I would recommend it to anyone who has pets to come and rest here.
We had a lovely visit at Rus 'n Bietjie. Friendly service, aunt Anna-marie didn't mind allowing extra guests. The toilet in the house is just a little low - maybe get a stool or something for people who struggle with back problems and don't want to go out in the cold in the winter because you'll get sick and get wet.
I just suggest they upload new pictures. The photos on the website give the impression of an open sea view, there is a house built in front of Rus 'n Bietjie and the view is a third of what the photos show. Also, the photos show a low wall around the house without any gate, but now there are higher walls and a gate. Not a problem, but the outside photos are not up to date. The place remains creative and beautiful, the house is historic and cute. Everything is there that is needed.
The accommodation was well positioned with a beautiful view of the sea. Although reasonably clean, the place really needed some TLC. The toilet in the bathroom (a child's one), although cute, it definitely is not suitable for anyone with any kind or for people with mobility issues. My wife has a minor back issue. I was sitting on the stoop on day 2 and some people walked into the yard and started taking photos of the house until they saw me sitting there. Not sure what that was about!
The location is nice, the host was friendly and helpful, however, the actual facility is very dated and dingy. I was disappointed. Fortunately, it was only one night and we made the best of the situation.
Nice trip. But, just unhappy about WiFi which is limited and place also needs a thorough cleaning.
What a lovely place! Thank you.
Our family really enjoyed this old fisherman's cottage. The house is old and has so much character. As you read through the guest book, you can see that for many years people from all over the world have had a great time. Anne-Marie was also very helpful, friendly and professional.
Only stayed one night.
We really enjoyed it and slept well. The view is wonderful.
Value for money. Rest A bit has everything one needs. Not luxurious, but very comfortable and a lovely place to relax. Will definitely visit again.
Probably the best way to see if you enjoyed your stay is the answer to this question: Would you do it again? My answer is: our family would like to come again and bring more friends along. Thanks for a nice long weekend.
Lovely place, but a little more effort could be made with furniture, especially on the porch, as well as beds. The fact that the house is old gives it lovely character, but appears unkempt. A little more attention to small things like cleanliness in the outdoor toilet and garden will help a lot. All things considered, we still had a nice stay.
It would be nice if there is history about the house itself. There seems to be a lot of history involved.
The place was old, but had everything one needs. There is enough space for the children to play. Sufficient sea view and located close to the sea. The antiquity portrays the beauty. Really a nice place to rest.
Good location, can see the sea and boats.
We really loved staying in this old little house! Nice location and our 2 little doggies loved the yard. Will definitely be coming back here and next time we will bring some friends along!
Had a very nice visit! There's nothing fancy, everything is very basic!
Rest A little is exactly what the name says. The house is ideal for people with small children, there is nothing fancy that can be broken, so parents can just rest a little.
We were not sure what to expect but were intrigued by the cottage's history. It had everything we needed and I am just sorry we couldn't stay longer!
It is an extraordinary place with the ideal location. Lets you forget the city's noise and bustle and brings that calm, simple feeling back to your life. Love it.
Fantastic place with lots of character. We love the view and location, perfect place to go if you have small children as the small tidal pool, clean toilets and a small park is a minute away. Will definitely go back.
Rus 'n Bietjie is an old time fisherman's cottage fitted out with rather tired furniture and fittings. The kitchen is functional and has most things you need but could do with a facelift, especially the stove. The beds and linen were fine and clean. Don't expect modern standards but enjoy the simple life and simple provisions with a prime spot near the beach. The verandah is huge and a great boon being well sheltered from the prevailing winds as indeed the whole house is making it cosy and comfy even in midwinter. The house did not need heating despite a cold, wet winter storm and concrete floors throughout. The bath is rather short and there is an outside standard height toilet as the inside toilet is rather low unless you like squatting and can make it back up again. The gas geyser worked well. Don't forget to buy some fresh water when you arrive from the Friendly Store 1km on in Agulhas village centre as the water is decidedly brack (yuck!). Overall, an economical stay with adequate furnishings. TV works too with OpenView box and a 32" flat screen provided.
Everything you need.
What an amazing old house. You just want to sit on the porch and stare at the sea all the time. With something cold in the hand of course. When I think of a house by the sea, I definitely think of Rus 'n Bietjie. Thank you very much for all the facts about the history of the area.
Beautiful old house with a large patio, Has the most beautiful sea-view. Will definitely stay there again.
Although one could argue that the place needs renovation, the location and what is offered is good value for money. However, I would just recommend that the breakables should be placed in a safer place, especially if small children are around. Hands fumble everywhere and it's a process to keep the breakables safe.
One item that we missed was a shower. We were only 2 guests but more guests will struggle with 1 toilet, basin and a bath. Pay attention to new pillows too.
The place is very cute. Very simple, but neat and has all the essentials.
Rest a bit is located in an incredibly beautiful location, there is one house right in front and then the sea. View over sea to the side is very nice. The house is a typical fisherman's cottage, very full of character. Not everyone is going to like the facilities in the house, because it is not modern, but everything is working and the house is nice and clean. This stay is sure to be unique and was an incredible experience.
Booked cause of the text en photos. Misleading. R1200 is too much for this small cottage. First, as non-smokers, we had to open all windows and doors to get fresh ocean air. The furniture smells like wet dogs. The toilet is 30 cm's high and not easy to stand up for the bath isn't steady fixed. We didn't shower, for there was a bath only. For a super basic house like this, the price is way too high, compared to other available houses in the same area.
We stayed one night in this old house with character, with 3 small children. House was clean and taken care of with love. Beds are good. Friendly host. And perfect location. Close to ocean and most southern point of Africa.
Affordable and comfortable accommodation with everything you need, and the see view was a nice bonus.
See the stars.
Exactly what it says, "Rest a Little". We really enjoyed it and the location was perfect. As the place was described, we got it. Thank you very much Anna-Marie for the hospitality. Will definitely come back to rest.
Wonderful to be able to braai and see the ocean.
It's a traditional family holiday home with no frills, a little run down, and in need of some maintenance. Discerning vacationers may want to stay elsewhere (and much more expensively). The kitchen is quite fully equipped. Bedding and towels were clean and adequate. Security-conscious Gautengers will not like it, because there is not much security to speak of, except that there has never been a break-in or incident. We made peace with it and stayed very calm. The sea view suggested by the publicity photos is slightly limited by a new house blocking half the view, but there is still a 90 degree sea view, and the sound and scent of the sea is around all day. your. On the veranda you can read and take a nap, and if you look up, the sea is there. Agulhas' shops, restaurants and cafes are within a 10 to 15 minute walk, depending on how fit you are. The hostess is friendly and helpful. We had a nice stay and relaxed.
Personally I think it is a lot of money for one night. I have stayed at other places for R1250 a night.
Lovely, relaxing, excellent location.
Its position is so suitable for younger children. We enjoyed our stay immensely and have a mind to go again sometime soon. We were given to understand that it was an older house with facilities so typical off a comfortable beach cottage. It certainly isn't modern but that is how we like it. This does mean that it probably isn't to the liking of some.
It is not 5 star, but a typical beach house with lots of place to sleep, a nice patio with a braai and partial view of the sea. Well equipped. A shower would be an extra bonus.
The cottage is well located with a great view of the sea and a short walk to the sea front early morning was the highlight. The cottage is rustic, yes, but it is clear that no maintenance or proper cleaning has taken place for some time as one had to fix the toilet after each flush. We were reluctant to use the kitchen.
A shower would have been nice. The toilet is very low, not suitable for adults, made me think of primary school. Delicious rusks, beautiful towels, but please put sugar in a sealable container, not in a torn bag with clumps of coffee. Comfortable braai spots, we had ourselves a nice fish braai. The owner was very friendly and made us feel at home.
This location provides you with the sound of the sea without breaking the bank. Love the casualty around the place. Needs a bit more protection on the verandah when galeforce winds are blowing as this stops you from braaiing, which is such a South African tradition. Also can do with an outside shower to wash off the seasand.
Close to the beaches and we could have a wonderful walk along the sea. Very nice to take pictures.
The house is clean and in was comfortable. We don't spend our time in the accommodation that we book, it is only a place to sleep. There is too much to see and experience. So the fact that there is just a bath did not bother us as much as some of the other guests. It is probably one of the oldest houses, a lot of character without all of the gimmicks at other places that you never use but pay a fortune for.
Stay was pleasant. Everything in the advertisement about the accommodation is as it is described.
The house met our requirements and it was a bonus that our dogs were also welcome. We had a very nice stay and relaxed. Anna-Marie, thank you very much for the special getaway.
Nice stay. Comfortable stay close to the "soldier's pool" where you can swim, lovely patio where you can socialise. Nice warm bath, but you could consider putting in a shower overhead, with a curtain. Men generally prefer to shower. My husband went to shower at Soldier's pool.
Well positioned fisherman's cottage with basic facilities at a very good price.
The accommodation met the description in the advertisement. After going out to dinner the first night, we returned to a dark house. We reached our beds with the help of the light from our cell phones. The next evening, the power went out again around 6:30 p.m. We called the manager who said she couldn't help because she runs the house from Bredasdorp. After a bit of a struggle, she sent out an electrician who found a short circuit. The manager offered one extra night for 3 people for the inconvenience, which we will probably take advantage of.
The house was not decently clean, please see. the following as constructive criticism. 1. House needs a lot of attention. 2. Better quality pillows. 3. I noticed from the visitor's book that many customers ask for a shower. The bathroom is very uncomfortable.
Thank you, it was delicious. We will definitely use Rus 'n Bietjie again!
Wonderful resting place. Excellent and pet friendly. Definitely a rustic place - don't expect luxury.
The accommodation is by the beach and one can rest wonderfully. The double bed mattress is done and the bathroom needs some serious love. Living room furniture is old and worn. The only good thing is that it taught us to appreciate luxuries again.
Dirty porch. The house is not supplied with fresh air. The bathroom is pathetic. Our dogs were not included. Bad.
We were not happy with how the house looked inside. The beds were not made well and it was stuffy. The windows were closed all day. Some lights and the porch light are out of order. Children were afraid to go to sleep at night. General: We were not happy with the school holidays at Rus 'n Bietjie.
My children and I really enjoyed staying here. It is really recommended. The weather cooperated and we will visit again.
Very nice vacation house, nice stay, will come back again
Everything you need for a short stay ... only missed the coffee percolator.
It was a lovely weekend. The weather was lovely and there was plenty to see. And I think the weekend was too short. I will have to go again.
We really enjoyed the place and will definitely come again.
Great ambience, but the only things were that certain things desperately needed upgrading, such as beds which were very uncomfortable, and then certain cutlery like the tin opener which is so rusted it does not work at all. Besides the little things, it's a great place and good value for money.
Lovely service.
The location of Rus 'n Bietjie is unbeatable! We were 3 adults and the 3 bedrooms not located on top of each other is a bonus so we didn't disturb each other. The backyard with large lawn and braai area outside on the porch with the nice view was a pleasant bonus.
A few small things that could be fixed by the owner.
See the stars below.
Lovely character. Bathroom needs modernisation.
Will "air" the rooms before guests arrive. In the beginning it was very stuffy in the house as well as apartment.
It is well situated, but really needs to be spruced up a bit.
A major shortcoming is the absence of a shower.
This stay had its best time. Has been worn out. Needs to be refreshed urgently. Everything looks neglected. Can paint many pots and put up with a lot of work before it looks acceptable again.
