Upon arrival, we were very pleasantly surprised with the farm and our cottage. So much more than we needed. Such beautiful surroundings and views. The location of the farm is perfect too.
Lovely cottage, beautiful surroundings, stunning pool, and large kitchen area. The bathroom was beautiful with a stunning bath. There was also Netflix on the TV, which was a plus. Unfortunately, it was summer, so we couldn't make use of the beautiful fireplace, but there was also air conditioning. A lovely tranquil environment.
San Gabriel Homestead was almost a pleasant surprise during our recent visit to Stellenbosch. The location of the homestead is comfortably close to the main road between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, although you are completely unaware of it when you first arrive on the farm, because you only see the Helderberg and the field around the foothills. You feel as if you become part of the place's history, as soon as you take up residence. The unit where we stayed is tastefully furnished with antique, yet practical pieces, which create an old-world feel. This characterful unit was spotless and had everything one could need. We were greeted upon our arrival by the host and hostess. Some of the friendliest people you can ever meet. A special word of thanks goes to the host who returned an item we left behind with a courier.

This is an ideal quick getaway guest house! Only a stone's throw from Cape Town, it is far enough from the hustle and bustle of the city to rejuvenate your soul with the beauty of nature. The owners are a friendly couple who make you feel at home and are happy to help with any requests. The units are perfectly equipped with furniture that makes you long for your Grandma, but comfortable and with all the modern accessories you will need. With the mountains, swimming pool and braai facilities, we will definitely visit this guest house again!

We were surprised by the quiet, quaint grace of San Gabriel. The hostess, Trudie, warmly welcomed us and allowed our student grandchildren to join us for a braai. I recommend this place if you want to escape the noisy and busy city.

The time at San Gabriel was perfect for both me and my partner. We enjoyed the privacy and peacefulness of the area, enabling us to completely shutoff from the busy outside world.
Very nice stay, very hospitable. I did miss that we didn't have a sheet to sleep under, the duvet is very warm.

No WiFi, no air con, no windows that can open in the room, no burglar bars infront of windows in the bathroom, we had to close curtains to be able to use toilet (no frosted windows). Constant noise from workers fixing unit nearby. Not the relaxing time in the Winelands we had in mind. Really overpriced considering what you get.
I was very disappointed.
Only suggestion is to install a shower attachment on the bath for washing hair.

Would recommend Gabriel to anyone as an overnight destination or a place to stay en route somewhere or even for those on holiday. I would easily be able to spend a month or more there. However, it is crucial that more information about the lodge be provided to guests before they arrive like the arrangements about the towels and the fact that the accommodation is closer to Somerset West than Stellenbosch. Otherwise: excellent.
We had a very nice stay. The bathroom in our second house was just too small.
We enjoyed our vacation very much. The staff and puppy made us feel very welcome. However, we were told on day 1 that we would be sharing the unit with other people who would also be using the kitchen. They arrived on our second last day. It was really not nice and so we just went out to eat every night. On day 1, Jeanette informed us that she would clean the unit the next day (Friday). However, that was the last we saw or heard of her. The third day we made our own beds. The kitchen was not used. The place has a lot of potential, but sharing with strangers is unacceptable.

The charming little cottage was the original home of Paul Hertzog and his family who founded the farm during the construction of the manor house. Mr. Bickerton’s Cottage eventually served as the stables but was transformed into the eponymous guest cottage frequented Mr Bickerton, an Englishman who moved to the Cape from Great Britain.
