These isolated and romantic Elandsberg Cottages are situated 18 km away from the Park Reception at Roodewerf, in the hills known as Elandsberg. Each cottage has an en-suite bathroom, a kitchen with a 2-plate gas stove, a solar-powered fridge, cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils, paraffin lamps, and candles, and a living room with a sleeper couch and a fireplace. Outside, there is a covered patio with a splash pool, sun loungers, outdoor dining furniture, and built-in braai facilities.
The rustic design of the cottages gives the visitor a true nature experience, topped with a striking evening sunset over the Roogeveld escarpment. Each cottage boasts beautiful views of the Karoo plains and the imposing Roggeveld Escarpment. The cottages are spaced far enough from each other maintaining privacy, yet close enough for groups to book different cottages together.
By the use of the locally made unbaked clay-and-straw bricks with sections of walls built with rock, a bygone era is evoked, one of simpler times. Examples of this building method can also be found in the many ruins within the park.

41 guests' feedbackThis accommodation exceeded all our expectations: large, open rooms, lovely swimming pool, and every man's dream barbecue! Each cottage is delightfully private and excellently furnished. The silence at night was special and was able to experience and appreciate the starry sky anew! Customer service was great and friendly, especially when they came to help us with extra firewood!
Showers and open plains were something special. Pool was not the best for swimming, was very dirty, full of funny slime.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our accommodation. Fantastic views, safe and secure, and really the units had everything we needed. Although our stay was very memorable, I do think that certain facts could have been made clearer with the listing description. For example: (1) Knowledge of a sleeper couch in the lounge area, given that we were 3 adults and 1 child. It meant that there was not a separate bed for the additional adult, and thus the child had to sleep on the couch. (2) No electricity made us believe that there is nothing! We were not aware that the unit was fully operated by solar panels and thus there will be lights, a fridge, microwave - this was a great surprise in the end, but we came with a camp freezer, etc! (3) Communicated the real distance (in km) to reception and the units from either ways to enter the reserve - recommendation to actually publish a map of the reserve (similar to what we got when we arrived at reception) to know how far we still have to drive when we entered the reserve. In the end, our stay was amazing; so please see this as positive feedback to be well prepared for our next. Thank you.
Very peaceful and enjoyable. Facilities were clean and the accommodation was excellent.
The accommodation is beautiful. The cottages do need some general maintenance. The pool net is rags and a danger to small children. The dirt roads are rough but are passable with tall vehicles.
Had a wonderful stay. Will be there again next year. No mirror in bathroom. Bird droppings on walls. Furthermore, everything was very nice and peaceful. No WiFi is the best thing. Thank you. We could switch off completely.
Our family was 4 people but we ended up in 1 bedroom cottage. However, booking shows we have booked for 4. Must have been an error on the website's side?
Our accommodation was perfectly located in the Park with a beautiful view. What would make our holiday better is to be better informed by Reception about the following: There is no reception in and around the Park, although there is Wi-Fi at Reception. One can also buy (very good!) wood at Reception. It is a 20 km drive to reception (one way). The roads around and in the Park are currently washed out in places and would recommend that you tackle it with at least a 2x4 vehicle. We even had to turn around with a 4x4 vehicle on several occasions because it was not possible to continue driving. It also takes a lot longer to get from one point to the next and you have to plan for it. It would help a lot if Reception could indicate on our arrival which roads are not accessible. The bridge between Tankwa and Calvinia is washed out and not accessible at all (even with a capable 4x4 vehicle) despite Reception still indicating that you can get to Calvinia by road. Middelpos has been without fuel for over a year, despite being listed as one of the closest places to get fuel. Apparently Gannaga Lodge has a fuel tank, but we only found out later and cannot confirm that this is the case. We drank the tap water without problems, but would recommend taking your own water if you are not used to the taste. The unit was equipped with everything we needed! There are solar panels so electricity was not a problem. Definitely pack binoculars and bird book! And research the wildlife ahead of time because there is no catch, and there is a lot of interesting wildlife that you will want to know more about.
The road from Ceres was awful. Had not been graded for ages and was very badly corrugated. We left via the Calvinia entrance. Much better. Even the Sutherland entrance/pass was badly stoned due to flood damage. I thought I had booked a 2 bedroom unit but it only had 1 bedroom.
The condition of the roads within the park was extremely poor and it is a shame that a national park's roads are in such poor condition. As a result, we will not visit the park again or recommend it.
Guesthouse has everything one needs. Well equipped.
Very nice stay in the middle of nowhere.
See stars.
Second time visiting Elandsberg with my husband, and won't be the last! There are endless views, peace and absolute quiet. If that's what you're after, you can't go wrong with Elandsberg. The photos don't do it justice, it's way better in person!
First visit for us in Elandsberg. Was an amazing experience, we will definitely see you again.
Long way to get there, but worth it.
See stars.
Beautiful well-kept houses that are well located and where you can experience the beauty and tranquility of the Karoo at its best!
We had a great time at the SANParks Elandsberg Wilderness Camp - the facilities were very clean, tidy and comfortable and the reception was friendly. It is truly a wonderful place to rest and get away. Our only negative comment is that the roads are extremely bad - both the access roads (all dirt roads) to the park and the roads inside the park. The camp's map indicates roads as 'sedan roads', 2x4 roads and 4x4 roads - unless the roads are urgently fixed after the good rains at the end of 2021, we would not recommend visiting the park with ' not a sedan. Some of the 2x4 roads were even impassable for a new Land Rover Defender.
The units are well equipped with clean bed linen and towels. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. If you like a decent wine glass, you can go along. The grilling tools are the basic ones. I always pack a grill and grilling tools because usually the grills have seen better days. There is a decent solar power system. The family unit we had had ceiling fans in the two rooms and in the lounge area. The pool(s) was full and pretty clean. Be sparing with the power or you will run out of power. However, we were able to run the ceiling fans through the night as it was 42 degrees during the day. Remember about the park fees if you don't have a Wildcard.
Rest for the soul. Already looking forward to our next visit! Beautiful place to experience the silences of the Tankwa.
Karoo silence with wonderful vistas. Silence and openness for your soul.
The unit was luxurious and beautifully equipped. The view is incredibly beautiful. It's wonderfully secluded and quiet. It's very safe. There is DStv but no reception. It's a pretty good dirt road but you have to drive a pickup or SUV vehicle. The Gannaga pass is terrifying but an adventure in itself!
The residential units are wonderfully situated to create reasonable privacy and the view over the mountains is breathtaking. Stargazing in the evening is top notch. The silence and the darkness of the night is an experience in itself.
There are now 10 houses and no longer the 5 as indicated on the maps and websites, SANParks should please update this. Quality, location and facilities are excellent, you don't need to bring anything except food, refreshments and ice. Houses now all have TVs with limited DStv too. Bedrooms and sitting rooms have ceiling fans that work well and there are wall plugs in all rooms (don't know what for). Lights, refrigerator and microwave operate from a battery and solar panel system. The last 100 km of dirt road after you turn off the Ceres Karoo road to the park is extremely battered (severe sinkholes and sharp rocks) - make sure you have 2 spare tyres, compressor, tires deflated to around 1.5 bar and a puncture repair kit which not packed away too deeply. 20 to 40km/h for the last 80km is safe. SANParks should consider renovating the road a bit. Otherwise it is more beautiful than in the photos.
Enjoy it. The Karoo is beautiful.
The house was very neat and clean. Very bad road inside the park. It needs to be scrapped urgently!
Some feedback would be to let guests know that should they need assistance that there is a central radio station up the road, as the reception is at least 21 km from the chalets. Our electricity went off on the Thursday night at 22:00 and we didn't know that we had a problem. We had a beautiful full moon that night so we had moon light. Like some lodges we have stayed at before the electricity goes off at 22:00 so we thought it was the same. We had no electricity. The chalets are set in a beautiful setting, very comfortable and nicely appointed. The plunge pool was wonderful after a hot day in the car, and to just chill and soak up the environment. We enjoyed the peace and tranquility. What a stunning outlook for a real break from civilization. We will be back for another visit.
I would suggest that an effort is made to keep the pool clean. We wanted to use the pool but couldn't because it was dirty and the water was green, so not very pleasant. There was no dishcloth or sponge. There was no soap in the toilet or shower. Perhaps a little more effort could be put into dusting the benches, not just at the top.
If you enjoy the Karoo's vast open spaces, Elandsberg is the place for you. General maintenance/cleanliness of residential units is not up to standard, green puddles and bird droppings on furniture can be cleaned for sure before guests move in!
Put some pictures on the walls, everything is so bare.
However the roads in the south-west section of the park were atrocious, and clients need to be warned about this. The park officials need to grade the roads as unofficial slip roads have been created parallel to the road as alternatives. Presumably by frustrated travelers. I would suggest that they inform their guests about the check-in times. Particularly on Sundays which is an hour earlier. We were not aware of this and only just made the office in time. It would have also been helpful if we had also been given approximate travel times, warned about the roads, and that the distanced quoted require to be allocated additional time due to the bad gravel roads. The directions quoted, from Calvinia, in my confirmation letter were incorrect, it recommended the road was given as the R354 and not the R355. Fortunately, the phone number given was correct, and I was able to get confirmation on this. However, it was a stressful time as there was no cell contact for much of the trip from Calvinia.
I think it would be a good idea to let people know how remote it is. Our GPS told us 2 and a half hours and it took us 7! The directions on the website took us the longest route and were definitely not the best or quickest way to get to our accommodation or the SanParks Office.
The facilities are wonderful, considering that the units are solar powered. Each unit is very private and the views are phenomenal. My only comment would be that the SANParks should just put up more notices about which electric devices can and cannot be used at the same time, as we tripped the power at night by using the microwave as well as having the fridge/freezer plugged in, which meant we had no power until the next day when the sun rose on the panels and the storage battery reset itself. However, the staff were very helpful when we did need them to come and look at the storage battery.
See stars.
Thank you very much for one of the best places ever stayed. From cleanliness to comfort everything was excellent. You can be truly proud and will definitely recommend you.
The park and facilities are very well maintained - an experience to share with friends and family.
Best SAN Park Council accommodation - clean, tidy and great set up.
Tankwa Karoo does not offer much if you are looking for wildlife, but offer loads of relaxation in a quiet wilderness setting. Great lodge accommodation with all the necessary facilities and luxuries.
Very pleasant stay. SANP maintain a high standard here. Wonderful big sky and open space.
We thoroughly enjoyed it, except for 3 flat tires on our way to our destination, so I recommend any future guests to pack the necessary tools. The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable, the only extra packing item I recommend for future guests is slippers, the kitchen floor are extremely uncomfortable on the feet as well as the patio area, not me or my kids could walk on it without shoes, what has provided for many tears from the 2 year old guest!
