SANParks Mountain Zebra National Park
SANParks Mountain Zebra National Park
SANParks Mountain Zebra National Park
-
Situated near Nxuba (Cradock) in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, this national park was originally proclaimed in 1937 to save the dwindling Cape mountain zebra population. Now, at over 28,000-hectares, the park boasts a conservation success story, protecting over 600 zebra as well as wildlife such as endangered black rhino and cheetah.
The comfortable accommodation units in the park are all self-catering and fully equipped with bedding, towels, cooking and eating utensils as well as braai sites. Units are serviced daily. There are also camping and caravan sites with power points on grassy substrate. Communal kitchen and ablutions are provided.
A swimming pool, a shop with curios and basic commodities, a fully licenced a la carte restaurant, and a fuel station are available in the rest camp. The park also offers 2 picnic sites, Fonteinkloof and Weltevrede, with braai faciltiies, picnic table and ablutions. There is a swimming pool for day visitors at Fonteinkloof picnic site.
The park is abundant with wildlife including buffalo, eland, kudu, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, blesbok and gemsbok, while mountain reedbuck and grey rhebok can be found higher up on the mountain plateaus. The park is known for its special sightings of the rater wildlife such as aardwolf, bat-eared fox and caracal. Over 200 bird species occur including black and martial eagles, ostrich, secretary bird, blue crane, Ludwig’s bustard, red-billed oxpecker and eastern long-billed lark.
The park has a rich variety of bird species and in spring, the plains are covered with flowers. The summers are warm and the swimming pool provides a welcome oasis for guests to laze in. Winter nights are cold - just right for evenings spent in front of the blazing log fires in the cottages. Regular snowfall on high-lying areas in the colder months turns the park into a winter wonderland.

20 guests' feedbackWonderful stay, saw lots of game, surrounding mountain scenery is so beautiful.
Yep, that was awesome.
See stars.
Second stay in the park. Enjoyed a lot.
It makes one think that there is either poaching going on or just another corrupt and poorly functioning government-owned entity. A very pleasant stay.
We saw so many animals and birds, but would have loved to have seen the lion, buffalo and rhino as well. The scenery was beautiful and we enjoyed our stay.
Excellent friendly service with small shop for the essentials if you forget something. The resort at the campsites and the chalets are very well maintained and swimming pools are lovely and clean. Would definitely recommend it for a quiet weekend with fun wildlife watching/
Nice park and very interesting landscape. Best quality accommodation we have ever stayed at at SANParks. Hope they will build the same at other parks.
Went on different game drives. Was very informative - learned something different about the animals in the park on each game drive. Restaurant's food was delicious. The family unit we stayed in was neat and well equipped. Very comfortable. Will definitely go there again.
See stars.
The driveway to the offices is a nightmare, pure corrugated iron and one sometimes feels that the parks focus much more on comfort for 4x4s than the normal cars. The bathrooms and toilets were clean, and the ladies' side better cared for than the men's. In the men's bathrooms, the doors were broken and some of the toilets did not work. It wasn't always clean either. The showers are very inconvenient and tiny, it's hard to move. In the park itself, one would quite like to see a nice bird-watching spot by the ponds where one can sit and take pictures. Roads could definitely be scraped more. However, we made the most of it and enjoyed every moment.
A pity our chalet did not have a remote for the TV. A definite lack of game. We saw more game outside the reserve on our drive through the Great Karoo.
Not very wild. But the natural beauty with the incredible mountains and the many roads makes up for it.
See stars.
Excellent and very pleasant.
Spent 4 nights and 3 full days in the park. Amazing experience. Peaceful and full of beauty. If you need to recharge your batteries close to nature, this is the place to do it. Not only is big game viewing fabulous but bird life is fantastic too.
The cottage we were in was one of the older places with wooden frame windows and wooden sliding doors. It was comfortable and clean but unfortunately it needs an upgrade ─ especially the bathroom. The maintenance is, as with most SANParks, a problem. There are things that are broken, but they are not being repaired. The layout of the houses was well done and the view was very nice. The park's dirt roads and directions are good. We were surprised by the number of animals we saw despite the severe drought. Overall I can recommend that our visit to the park was worth it and would love to visit the park again after it rained one day.
We enjoyed the resort and it has good facilities like a swimming pool and a cafeteria as well as walks and a separate picnic area with a swimming pool and toilets. In the lounge area there was a double-sided fireplace that went through to the bedroom, which initially looked like a good idea, but trouble was that later on, despite all our efforts, the bedroom smelled strongly of smoke.
Friendly service, amazing nature. Beautiful pool!
Cottage 7: Access is extremely difficult to open and close. Cooking pans are too heavy and not convenient. No WiFi, not fit in 2019. Our double bed was dirty and not well made. In any case, these houses need a thorough restyling. The park is beautiful and we saw a lot of wildlife, beautiful views and we really enjoyed it!
