Very pleasant. The cabins were clean and the linen smelled fresh. The showers need some upgrading and a bench for clothes. The floors are very slippery, but the water was warm and had good pressure.
Incredibly pleasant. The staff are wonderful and helpful. The train is clean and tidy. There is so much to do in the area, but just sitting on the porch and watching the sea right in front of the train was just "awesome". The restaurant's food and atmosphere are also very pleasant. We just had a great time.
Was superb. They were so hospitable, to the point of being able to change rooms from single to double bed to enjoy cuddling with my husband in this winter season.

She explained where our accommodation was, where we would have breakfast and assisted with loads of questions. Our carriage was beautiful and very clean. The accommodation and especially the location was absolutely perfect.
This was a pleasant overnighter for me. Waking up to the fresh sea air and listening to the waves crashing on the beach was the best for a peaceful sleep. Breakfast was a surprise and wonderful.
Pleasant. The room wasn't cleaned while we were there, but it wasn't a problem and they quickly replenished the tea and coffee when asked. The staff are super friendly.

Falling into disrepair. The bathroom with the shower was a bit gross. The silicone pulling away from the corners and the rust gives it an unpleasant atmosphere. I really did not feel comfortable with the cleanliness because of dirty corners in the cabin and broken light fixtures and the smell of urine in cabin 67.
On the website you say that every room has a sea view. We couldn't see the sea because there were bushes in front of the window.

Got very very cold. There is no form of heating.
It wasn't our first time. We asked for sea view but the window and blinds did not work. We had to move to another room with only a partial view. We stayed because I had to go to George Hospital for treatment. But our last visit was decidedly less pleasant. The floors were flooded and soaking wet. I suggest you put a permanent mop in the shower, because it is very unpleasant if there is no drying cloth to put on.
I unfortunately did not fully comprehend the service that was being offered. My daughter and I were looking for a comfortable place to destress and only upon arrival did we realise that the ablutions were communal. We would have dealt with that, but later that evening, we realised that the carriage was in effect, akin to a backpacking lodge. Loud, drunken elderly men, metal doors constantly slamming, we could hear everything going on in the bathroom next door to us. Needless to say, it was not conducive to a good night's rest. In hindsight, the Caboose may have been a better option for us. The plus side was undoubtedly the barman and the restaurant. The sushi was excellent and Justin was always on hand for that cup of coffee (which was also excellent).
Being able to stay on the train was an experience for the children. It is definitely value for money when you consider that a continental breakfast is included. The accommodation is neat and clean, and the service excellent! I would recommend that if you are traveling with teenagers, to book two compartments instead. Space is tight, but we just slept there and traveled around during the day, so it wasn't a problem!
Staff are very friendly and helpful. Everyone made it pleasant for us and the restaurant/bar closed later on Friday night so we could watch rugby.

The room is more beautiful than some hotel rooms I've slept in. The sea is a stone through away with a deck to relax and have a braai if desired. The room rate includes a filling English breakfast.

This was our 2nd time staying at Santos Express. It was great to see all the old familiar and friendly faces from last time. Great value for money at a very convenient location. Fun to stay in an old train compartment! Right next to the beach, so was lovely to listen to the waves while lying in bed. Good food at the adjacent restaurant. Please note that Wi-Fi is not available in compartments but can access it while in the restaurant.

I've always wanted to sleep in a train like that to nowhere, with the waves lapping so calmly against the beach. Wake up startled with the same tranquility and beautiful sunrise. Just always read about it but now it was reality. Most delicious ever! We slept there on Thursday night and just made another reservation for Monday night too! If you like luxury this is definitely not for you. It's a hippie vibe! Great service too!

The compartments can do with a kettle and coffee facilities as there is nowhere to have coffee after the restaurant has closed or before it's opened in the morning. That for me is a huge negative.

Santos is not a place for self-catering, yes for a restaurant they are good. There is no space to do all that, but it's a nice stay, only in the Royal Suite. They don't have wifi in the rooms, which is a turn-off, people want to enjoy wifi while relaxing in their rooms, not only in the restaurant. They must just upgrade the standard of single rooms because the people couldn't stay in their rooms because of dirtiness and the blankets are like wow, for prisoners. But I understand that it is a train, but the bedding must at least be upgraded.
Secure however the bathroom could have been cleaner. I was in a cabin next to the bathroom and the smell came through into our cabin. Also when walking outside the cabin their was a strong urine smell.
Very nice view but it doesn't help much if the sea water is dirty due to the harbor just next to it and so the children couldn't swim. Bathroom (toilet) smells incredibly bad in the carriage (Royal Suite B) in which we stayed. Secure gated parking only if you sleep in the Royal Suites. And the bed is quite hard. Furthermore, we really enjoyed it.
The reception service was outwardly unpleasant. I suggest they work on their friendliness and manners. The accommodation itself was lovely. The train itself was not well looked after, certain parts of the train were not maintained.
On arrival, the room we booked had been given to someone else. We had to downgrade for one night and move to the other room the next morning. The new room was not the right room either, we booked a sea view but had to face the street which was described as a mountain view. There were ants, we had to hang a towel in front of the one window that didn't have a screen in front. The worst was that we had no hot water for 2 days. No young man, it was a disaster!
Wonderful experience to be able to sleep in a train and hear the ocean's waves all night just outside the vesters. Next morning's breakfast was out of the books! Unique experience and highly recommended.
Booked the Royal Suite but unfortunately someone made a mistake with our booking and we were no longer able to get the Royal Suite. Had to stay in honeymoon caboose then. It was just so delicious. Even though we were disappointed about mix up with the Royal Suite, we had a very pleasant time. Santos is a nice experience.

This is probably one of the overnight facilities with the most beautiful view in the country and that with the old-world experience of a train compartment. Absolutely recommend. The restaurant that forms part of the facility's seafood is to die for.
When I first saw the description I thought ok this might be interesting. When we got there it was a wonderful surprise. We got to our cabin and it has lots of room, the bed was probably the best nights sleep I have had in some time. It was quiet and I could hear the waves at night. Outside we had our own private patio overlooking the beach. We went to dinner there and the food and staff were both impressive. My waitress was friendly and very welcoming. She was like an old friend. Breakfast the next morning was just as good. I would highly recommend staying here and I am going to try to rebook when I return.

Great place for a quick stay-over in Mossel Bay; nothing fancy, but your compartment is clean and safe. Shower and bathroom also clean. Location is great - right next to beach - one falls asleep listening to waves breaking on the shore. If you like something quirky (like sleeping on a train - who gets to do that anymore?!) then check it out!
You are just now falling asleep with the sea in your ears and unfortunately the train does not want to rock. Delicious breakfast. We would definitely recommend the stay.
Excellent location and exceptional view of the beach.
Once again, like 2 years ago, we had noisy guests in our carriage. They came in drunk and noisy at 3:00 in the morning (curfew). We had to ask them 2 times to speak more softly and respect our sleeping time. Our daughters had also been in a nearby carriage and not with us. Otherwise we really enjoyed it.
Awesome! It reminds one of childhood when we traveled to holiday destination by train. The sleeper train as we called it.

Plus - Very nice view and location, comfortable, informal restaurant for light meals, burgers etc. Minus - Only one chair in Royal cabin - would benefit from an extra chair and small table. The cabin's private veranda can only be reached by walking outside around the cabin and would also benefit from a sun or wind screen.

There was dust all over the window frames. Broken window shutters. And then also an unpleasant smell from the bathroom. We really will not stay there again.
We were 25 minutes early but had to wait until 14h00 to get keys. Then we got 2 cabins from each other in separate train cars. I then asked for 2 next to each other, because I cannot leave minor children alone. Then they said it's full, there aren't 2 next to each other. Then I said then we will have to find other accommodation, then suddenly there were 2 open next to each other. These cabins have an unpleasant smell, the floors and bedding are dirty. The rasta family who stayed next to us didn't come in until 11pm. They made a lot of noise, smoked and drank until 1am. It was quiet from 01h00 to 03h00, then a beach party started and it was noisy until 05h00. The security gates were open. I went to close it a few times. Needless to say, we couldn't wait for 05h00 to drive. We didn't sleep at all. Somewhat of a 'unique' experience I was looking forward to, I never want to do again. I suggest website remove Santos Express from their website, because you will not sleep well for sure. It was a bad experience. At 23:00 at night we started to Google for other accommodation, but with the 24:00 'curfew' we couldn't find a place anywhere that late. Most places' 'check-in' time is only until 22h00 in the evening. I almost fell asleep in my car.

As I mentioned above, it was a nice experience but was a bit small. Not that I wouldn't recommend it, but we'll look for a little bigger place next time. For example, a small kitchenette with a bar fridge or something. But we have no complaints about Santos Express at all. Had a wonderful breakfast, the location is fantastic, and will definitely use the restaurant again when we get there.

My overnight stay at the Santos Express was well enjoyed. The venue is located on the beachfront and the rooms are clean and well maintained - taking into consideration it's an old train. The reception is friendly and the workers go out their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The rooms are small and intimate which suites a solo traveller. The venue is also relatively close to the mall and other shops. Santos Express is recommendable to all solo travellers.

Reception was friendly, but think the advertisement for the accommodation is misleading. Rooms were clean but a damp smell filled the room, was under the impression there was a double bed as we indicated there were two couples staying there, and could someone advise us to prefer double facilities. Toilets and showers had to be shared with other guests, which were not clearly indicated as such. There was a sink in the room and with tremendous effort on the taps water came out, but there was no plug either. No glasses in room to drink water at night.
Nostalgic, takes one back to your younger days of train riding and sleeping over in compartments. Location right on the beach is perfect.

The main entrance door from number 3 is very loud so it's very disturbing. The cleaners are also noisy early in the morning in corridors and as they set up the bunk beds in other rooms. Furthermore, it was amazing and will definitely stay there again.

We had a very nice stay, except for the group of people who shared the wagon with us. They barbecued until late at night and were very drunk and then the group started swearing at each other and calling each other bad names until after 1 in the morning. My little girl was terrified and wouldn't leave our room to go to the bathroom. Otherwise it was pleasant.

I did mention with my reservation that I am on crutches and would like to be close to the dining room. They then put me in truck 7, the last compartment. Nothing was mentioned about stairs or ramps. So we decided to leave early on Sunday morning. This was just my personal experience after my major back surgery.
We had compartment with double bed, space very cramped, light switch very uncomfortable place, bathroom sink without plug, shower uncomfortable. Staff were friendly and food was delicious.

The small table in our unit had not been wiped down and previous guests' sticky soda stains were still clearly visible. The sharing bathrooms are a big problem, the toilets full of urine on top of the toilets and on the floor by 6:30 the next morning. Maybe they should consider making toilets available for men and women separately.
Bedding was never changed during the full stay. Only one plug in a double compartment is hopelessly inadequate. At the gate to the beach you can only go out but not come back.
No hairdryers can be used, no kettle for morning/late coffee. No water in room. Impractical accommodation. People clearly audible in rooms next door. Doors open and close too loudly.
We really enjoyed our time at Santos Express and will definitely use their services again.
Lovely little place to use as a place to sleep. Nostalgic, reminds me of family train holidays. Sea and beach are a few meters from your window, falling asleep with sea air and the sound of waves. I would recommend Santos as just a place to sleep for visits to Mossel Bay. Excellent place to stay for the young crowd.

Santos is good, I just liked everything about the train, and a huge thumbs up to the staff. They were like on point, all the smiles and the warm welcome was the best. I will most definitely return some time again to Santos Express. It is a particularly popular place to stay for young people because it is something different and very affordable. We will definitely stay there again. The train restaurant's food is delicious.
It's a safe place, enough safe parking. Good restaurant, lovely view, even from your bed. Everything within walking distance. (Unless you're a Mall midget.) Swimming beach right below accommodation with a kiosk that sells almost everything. It's simple, top value for money and every person I tell where we stayed immediately wants the details.

Very small and concise, but service is fantastic and very friendly and helpful staff. They can perhaps have a look at the included light breakfast by not providing the same kinds of cereal every morning and maybe adding yogurt. Especially for people who sleep over more than 1 night. We mostly used it just to sleep. Took daytrips to see the area.
Something different from the usual. Very difficult for the disabled to get up the stairs, including the stairs and the terrible slope to the restaurant (especially in the rain when the railing is wet). Our coupe's door didn't lock from the inside (think it was number 42). When we used the "latch" we couldn't get it open again and after two calls to reception no one came to let us out. With a hell of a struggle we got it open and when we were already outside, a lady came to help us. After that we could not use the latch and the key did not lock the door from the inside. So we slept both nights with the door unlocked, quite unsafe because you don't know who and what was in other compartments.
Just a pity for the parties at night on the beach. The toilet at the restaurant is in urgent need of renovation. It will also help if the sink can get water.
You can't ask for a better view. No towels. Well located.

The Royal suites brought back memories of my childhood. The accommodation was good, on the beach and the restaurant was reasonable with good food. Breakfast was good and the view was fabulous! Personally, I think there is a need for some maintenance on the coaches and the outside facilities. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay.

We stayed in the Royal Suite. There is a beautiful antique train that has seen better days. The train is located very well close to the sea. If it was closer to the ocean, you would get wet. The unit's hall is a bit narrow, seeing as it is a train hall. The furnishings of the unit is beautiful, bit the maintenance is not up to par. All of the windows can't open up and the bath has a leak and the bathroom was under water after taking a bath.
Unfortunately, all the fittings of the old train did not work as they did in the old days.
The beautiful accommodation is really great value for money and the complimentary breakfast is great and include: 2 kinds of Fresh juices / 3 kinds of cereal / Toast: white and brown bread / 3 kinds of Jam / real butter / Coffee and tea / hot and cold milk / fresh fruit - if you have traveled before, you will know that just the breakfast is a great bargain! You can also order warm breakfast at your own cost, which is still great value for money. Their Grilled fish is Superb by the way! The compartments are meticulously cleaned, neat, presentable and fresh linens are put on every time a visitor leaves. We know, because we stayed for 5 days and got into the routines of everyone around us. The shower is huge and fitted with warm and cold water. The toilets are kept squeaky clean and toilet paper is never something that is amiss when you need to go. The staff is super helpful and friendly, not only from desk, also the fabulous crew from Fork 'n Train, the on site restaurant and bar. Visitors have free WiFi in the restaurant and bar area, not the train compartments and everyone stops to chat and check in with you. This is South Africa at it's most precious. A warm "Good morning, how are you" is reciprocated and when you stop long enough to ask about the town, people have the most amazing stories to tell. A writer's little haven. You literally look down onto the sandy white beach, it feels like a tropical island, especially when your cocktail hits the light just right.
Santos Express is definitely worth a visit. Not only is its location ideal, it also has a restaurant with delicious dishes and friendly waiters as well as a bar. The compartments themselves are cuddly furnished with the most beautiful views over the sea. Our stay for October is already booked, just a shame December is already fully booked!

The rooms are small (it is in a train) but convenient and clean. We didn't even know that a light breakfast is included in the tariff. Very close to the beach, you can hear the waves crashing at night. Guard with vehicles at night.
Guests have to take note that Santos offers accommodation in train carriages, so be prepared for the fact that it's quite small, with limited space.

Everything good. Just the beds weren't too comfortable, but that is how the train beds were back in the day. Would suggest they add a second pillow. Restaurant food was very good and well priced.
The Royal Suites offer a lovely view of Santos beach and are particularly spacious. The restaurant staff is friendly, the menu includes delicious traditional SA dishes and the food is tasty. Santos is good value for money.

The town is within walking distance. To go for a walk on the beach early in the morning was very refreshing. The visit to the Diaz Museum was very interesting.
It had been a lovely experience and the deck outside the compartment had been a pleasure to use, it was lovely to sit there and look out to sea. Would recommend the experience to anyone. The only problem was that when the security makes its rounds you wake up from its noise.

The space in the compartments are too small for two people to stay longer than a day. The toilets and showers can be upgraded. There can also be more 220 V plugs in the room for laptops and cell phones. Free internet could also be a bonus.
Santos Express is a neat idea. We enjoyed our night there. Great location at the beach. Sound of the waves was so beautiful at night. Tall people won't be comfortable because the beds are small. My boy is over the moon because he can tell everyone he slept on a train.

The train wagon is beautiful, but the maintenance is very poor. Window pains are rotten, blinds don't close properly, the wind was blowing over our heads in the night. If nothing is done about that, there will be no train left within a few years. Ah shame. Next morning we only had 1 hot shower! My partner had to take an ice cold one. The same happened to our friends in the other wagon. This is very, very unpleasant when the weather is cold and there is no heating in the wagon. After complaining, a staff member only produced a very tiny ‘sorry’, while his superiors ignored us. Apparently it was our own problem. Again: a shame. We paid a lot of money to get a very poor service.

Santos is centrally located. You can go anywhere you want, whether it's Knysna or Oudtshoorn, all the areas are only 100 km away. The staff are very friendly and helpful and should you be looking for a place, they will be able to help you without having to struggle with an address. There are also road maps available on the train itself to locate the location. Besides that, they offer a delicious breakfast included in the price.

The train is well located. The restaurant is just next door and serves delicious meals. Santos Beach is a beautiful, safe beach. The train needs some maintenance, but otherwise lovely.

The train is on the beach, but there is a massive shrub in front of the window! Beds are clean and comfortable, not nice to share bathroom with the "corridor".
Except that the room wasn't finished when we got there and the bathroom and toilet wasn't very clean. I suggest you appoint someone to clean the bathroom and toilet regularly. When you shower everything gets wet, make a separation to keep your clothes and towel dry.
What you see on advertisement and what you get at Santos Express are two different things. The advertisement describes the Royal Suite as a "royal suite" with a victorian bath and sea view while only certain suites meet the requirements. They were willing to refund our money but not to move us to the suite we thought we had booked.
Our booking was for 2 adults and a baby. After a very long travel from Pretoria the room was only for 2 adults and there was not even space for the baby. When approaching management they said they will pay back the money, but still deducted a cancellation fee without any worries where we were going to get another place to stay after travelling for 14 hours. The women had a bad attitude.

We had a very nice time at Santos Express, a unique B&B. The taps in the cabins were very stiff and hard to use.
Definitely worth it. Nice view of the sea, wake up to the waves. One suggestion: air conditioning is definitely needed (very hot inside). With the view of the sea it makes you feel like you are on holiday.

Santos is the perfect accommodation if you don't want to spend the whole day indoors. The sea view is fantastic. The compartment is a bit cramped, but is ideal if you just want to spend the night, and is definitely value for money, including the breakfast. The staff is very helpful and friendly. I think the bathroom facilities might be a problem if it's fully booked. We were there out of season and did not experience this as a problem. I would definitely recommend Santos, and in fact already have.

The single "coach" room has a very small bed, not suitable for big, tall men. Toilet and shower facilities are shared with other "passengers". There is a restaurant and bar, so guests don't have to walk or drive far for food and entertainment.

Rates include maximum of 2 adults and 1 child under age of 2 years. Special rates for children 2-11 years. Children aged 12 and above are charged as adults.
We have 7 coaches, of which 4 are identical, with 5 compartments sleeping between 2-4 guests, 2 coupe’s sleeping between 1-2 guests, 2 toilets and 1 shower. The fifth coach is divided into 3 Caboose - an en-suite room with a balcony. Coaches 6 and 7 are our vintage Royal Ladies, 2 suites in every coach with a king-size bed, en-suite bathroom, amenities included, and balconies with outside furniture overlooking the beautiful Munro Bay.
Double- and single rates include a free continental breakfast. Royal suites include the light breakfast, as well as a complimentary upgrade to an additional hot English breakfast. We can accommodate a maximum of 122 persons and we have special rates for groups of 30 persons and more during our low season. Menus can be customized to suit your budget and requirements.
Our happening restaurant and bar serves breakfast all day, and other delicious meals such as steaks, seafood and our most famous traditional meals; these can be served inside or on the sun deck. The restaurant is open from 7:30 am.
Our staff can assist with all travel- and adventure arrangements such as shark cage diving, boat-based whale watching, sky diving, game drives, quad biking, deep-sea fishing, pleasure boat trips to Seal Island etc.
We are a 5-10 minute walk from the Dias museum complex, harbour and town centre.
