It was one of the best vacations I've ever had. The cottage is close to the sea, the beach is so clean and safe, everyone is friendly and the hostess spared nothing to make the unit as comfortable and stylish as possible. I took my dogs with me and it's definitely my next choice for a weekend getaway. I just can't fault anything, it's a lovely place.
Heaven on earth, beautiful view, whales, dolphins. Very special!
I booked the cottage and was a little disappointed to see that there are so many trees in the way of such a great view of the ocean. When I got to the beach with my two "furry boys" and I saw the freedom they had off-leash to run, play, swim in the rock pools and enjoy the waves, I knew I will be back. The cottage has everything you need! The host (Liz) was really great. The staff is so friendly, kind and helpful and the dogs on the premises did come and say "hi" a few times but they are really friendly. Thanks so much - 2024 will see me again.
We stayed at the cottage on the hill. It has such a beautiful view over the ocean, we sat most days on the patio with our binoculars and watched the whales play in front of us. The house was very neat and clean and the cleaning ladies were super friendly. If you want to switch off your phone and just relax, this is definitely the place to go. We had an amazing time and will definitely go back again.
Will never go to Shangrila again. Once there we were put in another house for the night. Couldn't unpack and settle down. Feel we should have been notified ahead of time. Cleaners moved for us after I said I would move to the other house myself. Wasn't home when it was done. We had to call every time so that the water could be turned on in the evening or morning otherwise we could not bathe and wash dishes (water tanks). The bedding felt like hospital blankets, not a decent blanket in sight. From the start everything just didn't work out. People must be informed ahead of time that their house that has been booked is not available.
Comfortable house if visiting with more than one family. Nice and spacious with a lovely large veranda and the most beautiful view. Very well equipped. Maid service is a bonus! Will visit again!
We stayed in the cottage; there were other guests in the big house which is located below and more forward in the garden and has an incredibly beautiful view of the sea. The cottage overlooks the garden and sea although the view is somewhat smaller. Beautiful garden. The houses are very private from each other. We walked past the big house through the garden to the sea. The most beautiful path that goes a short distance through the trees and over a train track, over a little bridge and you are on the beach. Easy, fast and beautiful path. You come out on the beach with rocks and pools across from you. Children (and parents) enjoyed the pools - delicious warm water and beautiful fish - a whole variety! If you walk a little to the left or right you will find bigger beaches but it looked deep down and unsafe for swimming. We played a short distance to the right in the surf where it breaks onto the beach in front of smaller rocks. Was delicious! Crabs are running around everywhere. The cottage has everything you need. Old fashioned decor. TV with DStv. Dametjie came to make beds and Scotch was there in the morning between our two evenings. Dog enjoyed the garden. I saw the most beautiful peeps! Owner's dogs also came to say hello once or twice - friendly dogs. We mostly went to eat at places to eat in Pennington. On Sunday morning I did the myrun at uMdoni Golf Estate - lovely route. We would love to stay at Shangrila again and enjoy a relaxing time near the sea!
The house, garden and view are unbeatable. Extended stay and is busy arranging the next holiday.
The house is beautiful and has everything needed.
I was a bit skeptical about the beautiful photos. But, we were surprised. Shangrila is even more beautiful than the photos. We just stayed there for 10 days. The beach is clean and very private and literally a stone's throw from the front porch. The staff is wonderful. Every morning they make a turn around the house and when you see again, everything is clean and in its place. Best of all are Liz's 9 Most Well-Behaved Dogs. It was a festival and we could have played with Tulip on the beach! Even the weak cell phone signal was absolutely no problem for us. It was great that way without constant cell phone reception! We will definitely go again and again. Thank you Liz for your incredible hospitality and for sharing your piece of heaven with us. See you again!
I am hesitant to write a review as I prefer to keep this hidden gem to ourselves. Shangrila offers uninterrupted views of the ocean, which you can also enjoy while sitting in bed! It also boasts the most beautiful indigenous garden. We arrived in aloe season and had the most splendid display of flowering aloes and bird life. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and having our dishes washed gave us a much needed break. The garden leads onto a secluded beach with some lifeguards a short walk away, which we made use of as the waters and tide were quite rough.
An hour from Durban. This cottage is ideal for a weekend break. Its position on a hill provides lovely open view of the sea while chilling on the veranda. Easy access to the beach via a private gate. Full DStv provided, but poor cell phone reception (with my service provider). Staff are friendly. Kitchen cupboards not pristine.
Shangrila is an absolute gem. We had so much fun and watched the antics of the whales and dolphins every day. The house is beautiful, and the staff nimble and friendly. We will definitely stay there again.
Shangrila is a beautiful place with convenient access to the beach. Liz ordered us a few meals from local caterers and we can definitely recommend the lamb curry. Friendly and comfortable place, will definitely visit again.

180 degree sea view from the front 2 rooms and all round veranda. Beautifully furnished and nice living house! Lovely garden with easy access to the beach. Be sure the owner's dogs will come home. Thanks Charles and Liz, Shangrila we will definitely see you again!

Safe access to the beach. Staff are helpful and friendly, surrounded by nature. The accommodation is stunning and has everything you will need.
We stayed in the 'Cottage on the hill' and really enjoyed our stay. The cottage has room for 4 people and was big enough for us two adults and our three animal children. It is equipped with covered parking opposite the cottage and has everything we could possibly need. The cottage has a lovely veranda with a beautiful view of the garden and the sea. The biggest asset for us is that there is private access to the beach, which means you can move freely to and from the beach. The staff were really friendly and helped us a lot during our time there. Lastly, we wanted to take our puppies to the beach for the first time in their lives. They really enjoyed it. There are seven other lovely and well behaved dogs on the property who have free access to the cottage. One must therefore confidently know that one's dogs are socialized and it is essential to keep an eye when the dogs move in the same area. Many thanks to the whole team for a lovely holiday.

The large open-plan living area, has folding doors opening onto both the front and back verandahs, as well as a fireplace for chilly winter evenings. There are tables and chairs for undercover outside dining. The inside dining area has a lovely teak table, and chairs, also opening onto the verandah. The wide wraparound verandahs, together with ceiling fans in each room, keep the house cool, and open to the sea breezes, while providing protection on a blustery day. There is a large lock-up storeroom off the fully appointed designer kitchen, with a safe. There is a fridge-freezer in the kitchen, as well as a further fridge and freezer in the double garage. A braai has been built in a protected spot in the garden just near the kitchen.
