This guest house is a very safe place for me as a single woman to spend the night. My car is also safe. The Magneto lamp was charged for the load shedding which started at 6pm that evening and a flask of boiling water was waiting for me. I slept well.

I also received a list of restaurants ahead of time where I could order or eat dinner. My basset hound had a great time frolicking in the garden and was just as welcome as I was. Let's face it: travellers can have terrible experiences in Colesberg. Who of us have not had a horrible night in Colesberg after all day on the N1. I have certainly had my share of deeply disappointing accommodation in Colesberg. Sure, it's a grind for the owners of the countless establishment, because mostly it's one-nighters they're dealing with, and that's a pain. But if that's what you're up for, at least put some heart into it. This is exactly what we found at Spes Bona - a whole lot of good, old-fashioned heart. We had had car trouble on the way, so arrived very late, but that didn't stop the warm, hearty welcome. We were thrilled to fall into clean, comfy beds and it was indeed delightful to experience the cleanliness, comfort and attention to detail. When our car wouldn't start (again) next morning, we were plied with coffee, rusks and home-made cookies and made to feel like old family friends. Quite apart from the genuine hospitality, the room was perfect in every respect. We couldn't have wished for better, and from now on, I won't be browsing for accommodation in Colesberg. I'll just cut out the nuisance and go straight to Spes Bona.

It was great to get to Spes Bona after a long day's driving. We were warmly welcomed, everything explained and allowed to settle. Advise on where to eat and get supplies was readily given. The room was clean and comfortable and a nice touch was the little gift of a spekboom to take home.

Good value for money. The room I was in looked out onto a main street and a heavy vehicle switched its enjin on at 4:15 outside which sounded like a car alarm and woke me up. So ask for a room that is not across the street.

Spes Bona Guest House was available for our half way overnight choice and it was a great choice. As a family, we decided to go out for the New Year, but upon our arrival at Spes Bona, the tranquility of the surroundings made us decide to just relax "at home" as a family and enter the New Year together. Spes Bona is a perfect guesthouse for overnight rest, especially if you are driving between Cape Town and Durban or between Cape Town and Gauteng cities. Place is not a 5 star hotel but it is super clean, well managed and the hosts are two nice ladies who will go an extra mile to accommodate any requirements. Because we checked in on a holiday when all shops and restaurants in that small town were closed, they prepared a delicious dinner for everyone and we enjoyed it. Rooms are spacious, the place is safe, OK Supermarket across the road, garages in close proximity, N1 highway really close. Enough parking, nice clean garden and very homely.

Spes Bona immediately made a plan and put an inflatable mattress for her in our room with the same bedding we had. She slept wonderfully with us there. They didn't think twice to help us. This is our third time staying at Spes Bona Guest House. The stay itself was peaceful, and our little dog was also welcome. The only problem I have is that the guest house is located opposite the main supply route to the town. The heavy vehicles that use this route throughout were something to get used to. Despite this, we rested and slept wonderfully, and were ready to resume our journey the next morning. As mentioned, we were kindly received and soon felt at home. We would recommend the guest house to prospective overnight travelers at any time.

We have been to Spes Bona twice and will go there again. The playground for the children is lovely after a long day on the road.
Only had a problem with the bath water as it took quite a while to fill up.
We often let children sleep over there, but were disappointed with the accommodation due to the following reasons. The mattresses in the unit we used are totally useless. This makes a good night's rest impossible. The noise of trucks that stop there all night in the street.

When they contacted us on the day we booked, they invited us to get there before the booking time. Good reception. There was tea and coffee that we could use and extra was offered. There are businesses right across the street that counts as bonus points. They offered their knowledge regarding businesses in case we wanted to buy something. Places to eat were also suggested. Those pizzas you suggested were top notch!
If you are on the road all day you at least want a good night's rest in a clean place where you are safe and that is what we found at Spes Bona. Will definitely stay there again.

Adine and her husband gave as a warm welcoming and immediatly made us feel at home. They recently took over the place and spent a lot of money renovating to get this place up to the excellent standard it is today. The rooms are well equipped with everything needed for a convenient stopover. Everything is clean, neat and in working order. I will definitely be returning. Adine, sorry for leaving so early the next morning. We could even say a proper goodbye. Next time, we'll stay for a bit longer.
Adene is a really hospitable, easy-going hostess. She made us feel so welcome and immediately brought a bunch of toys for my little ones when we walked into our lovely, cool room. We slept peacefully, everything was great and the room was so beautifully decorated and painted. I will definitely stop by again on my way to the Cape!
The rooms are very spacious and very clean. Our four-footed kid could run around in the garden after a long drive in the car. We slept well and ordered delicious pizzas from JC based on a recommendation from Arline.

The new owners put in a lot of effort to spuce up the place and also to make it wheelchair friendly, also the bathrooms. Delicious breakfast can be booked. Will stay there again when on my way to George or Cape Town.

We stayed at Spes Bona on our way to Joburg from Cape Town. We were travelling with 2 dogs. We stayed in Jean Room and there was space outside for the dogs to play and the room was big and neat. The electric blanket was lovely and the rusks were a treat in the cold. Will visit again.

The place is very comfortable and a lot of effort has been put into it to make it as comfortable as possible for guests! Some attention should be paid to the bathroom.
The guest house is well located as far as Colesberg is concerned. The parking seems to be quite safe. The room was marked as having a shower and a bath, but it was only a bath with a shower head about chest height. Unfortunately, during the water problems that the town experienced, even the shower head was not functional. There were some basic amenities that could make the place more comfortable. No microwave was available communally which made it very difficult with a baby. There are also no counters to even prepare a sandwich on. The room itself was wonderfully cool all evening, and with a counter, a microwave and a working shower head the stay could have been much more pleasant. The price given the facilities was therefore somewhat high. Our room key was also lost after leaving it at the designated location in the morning, which calls into question the actual security of the premises.
We were told that we could check in at 14:00, but the place was only available at 16:00 on 2 occasions.
Price and description as "luxury" led us to believe we would have air-conditioning. We didn't. The unit was not "luxury": "comfortable" would be a better description. Price was too high for standard of accommodation. Fridge had been switched off prior to our arrival, so we woke up to a pool of water on the floor and all of our frozen food thawed. The advertising offered breakfast by arrangement on arrival. We were informed no breakfast was available.
Ideal if you want to spend the night. Value for what you pay.

We loved the stay at Spes Bona. The most deliciously strange bed I've ever slept on. The owner is a lovely, friendly and warm person. Will always stay at Spes Bona in the future when we are on the long road.
We spent the night there on the way down to the Cape for the Two Oceans race, as well as on our return and both times it was lovely. Corrie at Spes Bona made us feel so welcome and everything was extremely clean and tidy. We would love to stay there again and have already given family and friends the contact details. The bathroom door and heating were inadequate. There was not enough space and benches for the suitcases. The noisy trucks next door were disturbing at night.
