15 guests' feedbackWe stayed two nights and had a wonderful stay. The room was nicely furnished, comfortable, and everything was done with care. The location and garden were beautiful, the staff friendly and helpful, and the dinners in the lodge were very tasty and the price reasonable. Spion Lodge is conveniently located for people who want to visit the "Battlefields" and.
The location of the lodge, quite deep in the bush, was fantastic. The grounds are wonderfully peaceful. The rooms were spacious and clean. Hot water! The food was above expectation. The kitchen staff produced a lot of goodness, but wow, they are loud! I would go back.
No issues with the stay. However, the existing wall panel heater is just consuming unnecessary power as it does nothing unless one is directly in front of it, which doesn't make sense if this was the intention. I suggest having that replaced with either an aircon or a better heater. Also, I wasn't happy with parking so far away from the room. There was also no mention of the condition of the unpaved road leading to the establishment.
A very pleasant stopover. The staff were very welcoming and the food was very tasty.
Beautiful location, excellent staff, great wholesome food, peaceful and it felt safe. The highlight was the battlefield tour which is really touching. If I could offer one suggestion it would be to provide guests with a little map that sets out one or two self walks (perhaps up Alice, or down the wagon trail to the river) and also a few mountain bike routes. I would be willing to pay extra for the opportunity to ride across some of the land around the lodge.
Everything was up to standard. Difficult to find good meat in town. Very good holiday destination.
Good halfway stop to the South Coast.
SpionKop Lodge was very comfortable and a peaceful place to stay. It was clean and the service was very good. We really had a great time relaxing.
SpionKop Lodge is part of a working farm. Acacia cottage is directly next to a cattle pen. During our first night, the cattle were loaded onto trucks into the corral twice, at midnight and again early in the morning. On our third night there were cattle in the barn again. They were restless and we were woken up every now and then by their noise. The other cottage is 30 yards from the cattle pen. SpionKop Lodge is located 1.5 km from the main road with no access control. No form of security was observed during our stay. There is another residence near the cottages that had an electric fence with an alarm (went off twice during our stay) and guard dogs. This makes one wonder about guests' safety. Our cottage was comfortable (no frills) and clean with a nice fireplace. The kitchen was very basic and there was a sunny private porch. The pool area is lovely with large lawns all around. The R600 road's many eateries and shops are highly recommended, as is the Drakensberg Canopy Tour.
Nice environment and place to stay for a good price.
The reception was very pleasant and welcoming, the rooms were very good. The quality of breakfast and lunch was OK, that of the evening meal reasonable. The surroundings are excellent, you feel at ease, there are lots of birds and it is possible to walk, although you have to find your way.
The rich country history was truly an incredible experience.
It was an awesome experience with my friends. The staff were very cooperative and very good service was given overall.
The units are built from stone that is half a meter thick. It absorbs the heat all day long and it's like a sauna in the place with no air conditioning. There are broken tiles in the bathroom. The pool is dirty water that looks like it comes from the farm pond. For a quarter of the price I would not stay there again.
Enjoyed our two nights at the Spionkop Lodge, while on a family vacation (all adults). Definitely take advantage of the historical tour! Being from Canada, I only knew bits of pieces of SA's history. Much more understanding now!
