There are 33 large camping spots between trees, each stand has a power point and braai facilities. Camp Rigel is the first camp with 7 spots. Camp Spica is the second camp and has 10 spots. Camp Vega is the newest camp with 15 sites as well as separate ablution facilities. The camping spots are covered with gravel, to prevent ground sheets from sweating, and to prevent mud from being trampled into tents or caravans on rainy days.
Water points are shared between the camping spots, and separate ablution facilities with electric geysers are provided for men and women. Facilities for washing up, as well as a clothesline, are available and shared. A communal asbos boma, Muisbos, is available for use on windy days.
Jurg presents stargazing nights between 20:00 and 22:00 on most nights. Please note: booking is essential. The presentation includes a short lecture followed by stargazing with 6 11" telescopes. A short lecture is given and guests can also view the excellent fossil exhibit with an expert overseer to answer questions.
Guests can also visit the Dutch Reformed Church, the N.P. van Wyk Louw Museum, SALT, the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere and the Ouberg Pass. Please note that bookings for SALT are essential and must be made online.
The campers also have the advantage of a bicycle or hiking trail inside the campsite. There is also a "Lovers Walk", fire pit, and labyrinth with botanical plants and shrubs of the area. The term Solstice is practically demonstrated with set-out beacons. The culture room with the history of the town's poets and uniquenesses can be viewed. More intense talks about fossils can be arranged.

49 guests' feedbackVery nice stay, there were only a few other people, so the ablution facilities were always available. Jurg is friendly and helpful, without being in your hair. However, the weather didn't cooperate, so nothing came of our stargazing plans - not Sterland's fault.
Very pleasant stay.
It was a lovely camping spot, situated close to town and everything we needed.
Is a great stop if you are on a road trip.
Only stayed one short night with heavy winds and rain so can't comment too much on amenities and experiences but the camping ground and bathrooms were clean and neat, and the host is very hospitable. Thank you!
A very nice campsite with excellent ablution facilities and other facilities.
What a lovely place, under the stars of the Karoo. All the facilities were top notch, sheltered from the wind and the hospitality was excellent. Next time I will bring the whole family.
We had a great time camping at Sterland. The trees offer privacy to each pitch. The site is particularly neat and has several interesting areas. Then the best: Stargazing!
Many thanks to Jurg for waiting for us after hours. The place was immediately available and tidy.
We easily found our stand. Good organization. Everything is so beautiful, clean and peaceful. Ablution facilities are very nice and clean. While we were at SALT, there was hail in town. What an incredible experience. We would stay there again anytime.
The town has changed a lot as is understandable after 52 years of not seeing it, but nice and tidy and definitely still famous buildings. Lots to see. Will go again if possible going forward.
Pretty much the only reason to come to Sutherland is for the stars. This is where Jurg comes in. Passionate, humorous, and informative!
Very nice and interesting campsite with friendly and helpful host and wife. Unfortunately cloudy so we couldn't do the stargazing but will definitely return for that.
Value for money! Clean! No noise!
We booked the stargazing with Jurg and enjoyed it so much. He connects well with his audience and is very passionate about the subject. If you are in Sutherland it is well worth it to book for the stargazing. The campsites are lovely and protected. We had shade and protection from the wind. Our children were able to run and play and explore the immediate area and enjoyed exploring the hidden gems found at Sterland Kampering.
The pitches are perfect, bathrooms are clean and tidy. Everything is just 100%.
Comfortable pitch with a power point as well as clean and tidy bathrooms. Opportunity to learn more about stars and watch stars and planets on site.
Nice and tidy campsites with good privacy, although campsites are opposite each other. Owner was very friendly and helpful. Although one campsite is advertised for 5 people, we could not fit 2 rooftop tents and had to annex a 2nd pitch. Although we were allowed to do so without additional costs, it might be a problem if the campsite is fully booked.
Starland is a good central point from where you can do much of the Tankwa.
Clean camping site and bathrooms.
The site is very well maintained, with beautiful gardens and paths as well as recreational areas. The facilities are well maintained, and the service is very friendly. Jurg imparts his knowledge with passion in a very exciting course that is clearly enjoyed by everyone there.
Very nice pitches, where you can also enjoy the starry sky together with passionate Jurg and his telescopes.
We camped for 2 nights, we were received by Jurg, what a lovely person, he was very accommodating, and the site, wow , was out of this world. Exactly in the spirit of Sutherland. A universe and earth meet at Sutherland. We visited SALT, it was amazing tour. Nice well organized camping site with electric points, braai area, and still feel the privacy. Good romantic garden with walk paths. We watched the stars, Jurg has a stargazing venue. Unfortunately we did not make use of it, but I am sure next time we will. For sure we will come again. Maybe for longer. Thank you Jurg!
See stars.
Jurg and his whole team are genuine and great people, so much effort is put in on their part and I will and will definitely go there again.
Nice campsite, ablution small but clean. The heavenly presentation by Jurg was excellent. Good value for money.
Neat and clean. Friendly reception. Neat ablution blocks with hot water. Nice camping. It's right next to the main road through town so there is a lot of traffic.
We chose to camp overnight at Sterland so that we could do Stargazing which Jurg provides. The campsite was clean and nicely organised in order to pitch a tent. The ablutions are good and close by. We had a comfortable night.
Very neat campsite, friendly owner. Great ablution facilities. Sorry we could only spend a few hours there, but would happily recommend it.
Such a nice stay. The night sky is out of this world, and Jurg is very pleasant and his star gazing session was worth it. If you do decide on this place, make sure you to check the different routes there beforehand, as Google maps will take you on very long dirt roads. More than 80 km long.
Warmly received.
The owner of Sterland, Jurg and his wife have created a gem here. Creating and maintaining such a charming little campsite in the arid Karoo requires passion, a lot of love and perseverance. Congratulations and thank you for letting us share this. Jurg's presentation about the stars in the sky really impressed and made us realize once again how insignificant we are in God's creation. I am very sure that everyone who visits Sterland will enjoy it very much. And be warned, take warm clothes with you, yes, even in summer! The radiation at night is high and temperatures of up to 2 degrees Celsius were recorded during our visit in December!
Stil en rustige kampeerterrein.
Wonderful and well-equipped.
Very quiet, neat and clean.
We really enjoyed the camp at Sterland. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the facilities are clean. We will definitely camp there again on our next visit to Sutherland.
Sterland Camping is well located if you want to explore Sutherland. At the campsite, Jurg offers an informative presentation that gives one more information regarding the starry sky. Each pitch is nice and private, sheltered by trees. There is also an interesting boma that can be used by the campers to grill meat.
The reception upon our arrival was very friendly and handled professionally. Our camping plot was pointed out to us and all the dos and don'ts (camping rules) as well as the things we can do and see were handed to us in a book format. It helped a lot with the history of the town and SAAO. Sterland is also located relatively close to the SAAO. The first night we did the braai thing - as authentically Afrikaans as it gets. The braai is a bit on the low side and a bit difficult to braai with your stars up, especially for the older guard with back problems. The second night we went to listen to Jurg's talk and stared through the telescopes at some of the planets and the moon.
These are very neat campsites that are nicely laid out with trees. The ablutions were also neat at all times, I only suspect that the two toilets and two showers might be on the small side if all the stands are full. Apart from Sutherland's cold, also prepare for wind, the trees did not block the wind and one should pack a wind shield instead.
Was peaceful and very charming!
A comfortable campsite with a fantastic opportunity for stargazing on site offered by Jurg. If we get the opportunity again we will definitely stay there again.
I liked the poplar trees which give a good barrier against the wind.
I found this campsite to be very well maintained and ablutions were very neat . The sites are are well set out. Would recommend this site for stay in Sutherland.
There is so much to do in Sterland and we recommend it to all our friends and family.
The starry evening was perfectly presented and the camp was peaceful and a good place to switch off.
Jurg and Rita area wonderful hosts who made sure we were happy with everything. Will always remember the star-gazing experience.
Although we only slept here one night it was safe, well located and bathrooms were close and clean. The washing up facilities were also very good. Although it was -6 everyone had more than enough water.
Ablution facilities were good.
The stay was interesting.
