Swartberg Backpackers does not make use of electricity, we use solar electricity, gas and wood fires. This means no TV. A hairdryer can only be used with generator power. The solar electricity provides enough power to charge a laptop, cellular phone, room lights as well as a portable 12V fridge. There are solar geysers and gas to provide warm water and a stainless steel "donkie" for the overcast and rainy days.
The accommodation comprises a 1-bedroom unit with a hot tub and a 2-bedroom unit with high-quality bunk beds. Both units have well-equipped kitchens with gas stoves, gas ovens, gas bar fridges and solar fridges. Please note there is no microwave in the units. Braai facilities are available for both units. The Ark unit has table tennis for those sports lovers.
Pets are welcome by prior arrangement. Please note that the units are not shared with other people.
On-site facilities include pedal cars, canoeing in the farm dam, swimming in the close-by swimming pool as well as the mountain swimming pool, and lots more.

36 guests' feedbackA special special hidden diamond. We had a great stay, swam, hiked and will definitely go again. The owner was very helpful and friendly. The accommodation was neat, clean and furnished with all necessities. The surroundings are picturesque and we returned rested. The dirt road is well maintained and the farm is easily accessible in any car.
We enjoyed the remoteness of the accommodation, with the lovely walls and beautiful sunset.
What a treat! The owners answered all our questions patiently and went out of their way to accommodate us. We had a great time with family around the fire. My boy enjoyed himself with the animals and pedal bikes in the yard. It's definitely worth the effort to walk to the waterfall, it's a steep walk, but we did it with a 2 year old, plan about 2 to 3 hours for the trip. The house is very comfortable and the view is beautiful. We also enjoyed the "hot tub", the water is wonderfully warm and the view over the pond and mountains is idyllic. Swartberg Backpackers is also available for day visitors, so if anyone is in the mood, the waterfall walk is definitely a must!
The place is in a very nice place, but the mop and broom were hanging over the wires. Stuff was lying around everywhere and electrical wires were hanging around. It was a big disappointment for us. The photos and the place are not the same. The host was very friendly. I don't know how you can put five stars next to this place.
It was absolutely so much fun at Swartberg Backpackers. The silence, the breathtaking, fantastic scenic view and stars left us in awe. Our visit was just too short. The host, hostess and children were very friendly and helpful. The accommodation was neat, clean and comfortable. Value for money. Will definitely go back again to explore hiking trails further. Many thanks to Louis and his family for a wonderful experience. The 4-person chalet is comfortably furnished, with everything you need. A private braai area with a stoep is outside the chalet and overlooks the farm and plain, relaxing after a long day on the road. The walk to the waterfall was very nice! Children enjoy the farm setting! We will definitely stop by again.
What a lovely, breathtaking, peaceful stay. Nice walk to the waterfall and swam in the pond. The people are heart people! We stayed in the apartment and it was far more than expected. Don't let the name backpackers put you off, there is much more than meets the eye. Thank you very much for your kindness and beautiful guitar playing and singing from the eldest son. We will remember the place for sure.
Louis and his family gave us a friendly welcome. This is the place to get away from a demanding life, charge batteries and be close to nature (but without any distractions). Great variety of day trips in the beautiful area!

We were kindly welcomed, slept very well and the unit was nice and spacious with everything we needed. They are indeed on solar systems, but we didn't even notice it at all and was actually a bonus with the load shedding at that point.
The cottage was slightly rustic, but very comfortable and contributed to the peaceful atmosphere. The owners are wonderfully helpful people and the nature and views beautiful. Highly recommendable and would definitely stay there again.

If you are looking for an unbeatable farm experience, especially for children, this is the place for you! A wonderful break from the city's hustle and bustle. The hospitality of the owner and their 5 beautiful children was overwhelming. We didn't even know about the children, everyone had so much fun playing together: From canoe rides on the dam, tractor rides to the waterfall, cycling, catching rabbits and playing games. The accommodation is basic and simple, so stop by if you are looking for luxury farm accommodation. But if you want to see your city kid become a farm kid for a while, and have the vacation of his/her life, definitely stop by here. The views are breathtaking from the braai (with plenty of braai wood). Although the accommodation is simple, it is very clean, well appointed, with lovely bedding. Very good value for money.
Our stay was very pleasant, clean, fully equipped with good quality appliances, and a view of mountain, waterfall and pond that is indescribable. The walking paths are nice and clear and the presence of farm animals only makes it more pleasant. The owner, wife and their children are the dearest people and help even before you ask. Wish we could have stayed another week longer. So if you want to escape to an unadorned pure farm to regain your peace of mind, this is for you. We recommend it unequivocally. There is also WiFi/internet to keep you in touch with the children. It's now if you want!
If you love nature, definitely stay in this eco farm! The owners showed us a charming self made video with hiking trails to the waterfall and pool nearby. It is very quiet and the view is amazing. The house runs fully on solar energy and gas. An experience which we won't forget! Before leaving we had a nice long chat with the owners who are lovely people.
It was one unforgettable week. Not only is it a vacation spot, but that family also shares their hearts with us. And care for everyone who comes there.

Swartberg Backpackers is pragtig tussen die berge geleë. Die gasheer se persoonlikheid laat jou voel asof jy daar hoort (deel van die familie is). Die plek is fantasties ingerig met die nodige fasiliteite, kombuis toerusting en speletjies om jou tuis te laat voel en die kinders besig te hou.
Cattle and sheep grazing around the cottage and the canoes on the farm pond right at the front door were a winner with my kids. Unfortunately we had to drive on again, but next year I will sleep here again for 2 nights and walk up to the waterfall!
Enjoyed the stay. The De Jagers are very friendly and helpful. Accommodation was neat and comfortable and the area and view lovely. The fully furnished kitchen and en suite-bathroom were winners! The title "backpackers" is misleading in my opinion. It's definitely more than just that. The price is fair for what is offered. Full marks!

We had a great stay in true farm style surrounded by the wonderful nature (with instant friends for the kids!). We enjoyed walking to the waterfall and could also visit the Cango caves and many child-friendly destinations from here with ease. Our dog also enjoyed the stay so much!

Our group was met outside the backpackers in the most terrible wind imaginable by the whole family, children included. Everyone helped us get our luggage in and "settle in". Louis finished running the donkey for hot water and Yolande baked fresh bread for us to enjoy dinner with us. The place was clean and spacious and very comfortable. I can highly recommend it. I only wish we had more time to walk to the waterfall.
Very nice stay at the Swartberg Backpackers. It is a beautiful area and the ark has the perfect location. There are many activities to do. The owners are also very hospitable and we had a great time chatting with them and other guests. The accommodation is very nice and fully furnished. Safe stay - would definitely recommend and go again myself.

I would definitely recommend Yolande and Louis' place as a place to stop. The mountains patiently watching over you and the explosion of stars above your head at night are just something you don't see in the city. I must say we were met with kindness and it was fun for us to be part of the way they do it in the countryside. Do yourself a favor and book these ones. You will not regret it!

We had a nice, calm and restful night at Swartberg Backpackers. This is the perfect spot before you venture on the Swartberg pass up to Prince Albert.
Well situated at the base of the Swartberg mountains. Friendly, welcoming service, and The Arc is clean and neat, and excellent for families or a group of friends. Lovely location for families that like to be outdoors - close to many destinations, such as Cango Caves and Oudtshoorn. Very relaxing!
Will definitely spend the night there again and then I will take the chance to go see the waterfall and swim. I think Yolande and Louis were very hospitable and made sure everything was in order. Beautiful surroundings and the view is nice over the dam and the farm.
