There are more stars in the sky at night than I have seen since I was a little girl! Thank you to the Swell Eco Lodge Team and the Ndumbi community for hosting us and making us feel safe and welcome! The dirt road from the lodge down to the beach is badly washed away and needs attention or you'll need to park up on the hill and walk the last part. To get to the main surfing side of the beach you will need to cross the river. This is not very wide nor deep at low tide, but can be dangerous at high tide.
Poor, untidy, unsanitary, battered, worst experience ever, no maintenance, no hot water, thatched roof falling apart, doors not opening or closing properly. Cow dung covers the whole place. Access route is a nightmare. The place is not even worth 1 star. Weakly over.
We from Port St. Johns on a dirt road to the lodge in the rain. Must have a vehicle with large wheels (no need for 4x4) otherwise the drive will be a nightmare for you. Take all your provisions with you because you can't go to the store soon. Nomsa at the lodge did everything in her power to get our accommodation sorted quickly after there was a walk-in customer who took our booked accommodation due to a misunderstanding between Nomsa and Justin.

We had a great time relaxing at Swell Eco Lodge. Bedrooms, kitchen, etc lack nothing! Justin and Lee-Ann's friendly staff made us feel like we were being properly pampered. The long drive on rough roads was worth it. Children had fun playing on the beautiful beach with new friends - no safety issues.
The unit has everything you can think of. The on-site shop has even more, from medicine to jewellery! The rooms are incredibly beautiful and even romantic. The location is remote and the road is pretty bad, but I'd say it's worth the drive!
The road to the lodge is extremely challenging, but it is worth it! Beautiful views, modern finishes in the house decorated with good taste. Calm atmosphere. We will definitely visit again.
One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, beautifully furnished place to stay with everything you need and friendly staff and owners. It's only the drive through the Transkei that we had a little trouble with but it was worth it.
Lodge runs like clockwork - the rondawels go well with the scenery and the garden is stunning and well-maintained. The communal kitchen is spotless has everything you need. We had fun times at the pool table with the big-screen TV for an extra treat. The area is beautiful and the ocean is very accessible. The staff is so friendly and helpful.
I/we have rarely if ever had a more special stay. A real little gem. Tucked away and slightly difficult to reach, this is very much quality accommodation in delightful, well-equipped, spacious rondavels that have everything you need and are located in the most beautiful, unspoilt part of the Wild Coast. Eco Lodge manages to perfectly operate their holiday gem with minimal (perhaps only positive) impact on the environment. An inspiring setting that we plan to return to often.
The stayover at Swell Eco Lodge was great. Accommodation and facilities are excellent. Justin and Lee-Ann are great hosts and would recommend that anyone wishing to experience this area should without a doubt stay at Swell Eco Lodge.

The environment and nature are beautiful and unspoiled. There is a lot of room for improvement regarding the rondavel where we stayed. For example, there were no chairs to sit on, no small table, no towel rails or a closet in which to hang clothes. The kitchen shared with another rondavel has only one table which makes the situation awkward and impractical if both rondavels are occupied by families/groups.

We stayed at three places on the Eastern Cape Wild Coast in December 2013/January 2014 and Swell Eco Lodge was our clear favourite of the three. The very comfortable, large and modern upmarket bedrooms allow you to lie in bed and watch the sun rise over the ocean, while the large and very-well equipped kitchen / lounge area we shared with one other family was only a pleasure to use. An unexpected treat was the gentle interaction with the quiet but vibrant and refreshingly friendly community surrounding the Lodge. We used as many daylight hours as we could exploring the coastline and river mouth. The other two lodges we visited - also secluded and highly recommended - didn't come close to the stunning stretch of coast ranging northward from Swell Eco Lodge. In one word: remarkable! This review would be incomplete if we did not also mention the very professional and welcoming interaction we enjoyed with Justin and Lee-Ann. There was not one false note in the three wonderful days we stayed at Swell Eco Lodge. Definitely our first choice for a return trip to the Wild Coast - please don't do anything to change the wonderful atmosphere you have established there. Thank you, Chris & Jackie
Swell Echo Lodge is a safe rurally located gem offering a wide variety of Wild Coast activities for active families or couples. More pricey than usual, but they offer a lot more comfort and cleanliness too!
We had a great stay, it was just a very long drive on a very bad road.
The rondavels and kitchen facilities are top notch! It's not only clean, but offers incredible service. The management went out of their way to make it as pleasant as possible for us. We had a great stay with them and will go back to Eco Lodge!
