The Karoo cottage was built in the early 1930s and comprises 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. One of the bedrooms is an open-plan loft bedroom and is accessed via stairs in the house, or from outside. It is furnished with a double bed and a three-quarter bed. The room has a free-standing Victorian bath, as well as a separate toilet.
The ground-floor bedroom contains a double bed, and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower. For convenience, linen and towels are provided. There are also electric blankets for the colder nights. Please note, the stairs to the loft are quite steep and guests should be careful when using them.
The open-plan living area is located on the ground floor, and comprises a kitchen that is equipped with a fridge, mini-oven, a microwave, cutlery and crockery, as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities. Meals can be enjoyed at the dining table.
The lounge area has a cosy fireplace/indoor braai, and guests will receive a case of wood and 1 piece of firelighter. The cottage also features an outdoor fire pit. Smoking is not allowed in the cottage.
Sutherland is known for its clear air, stargazing and cold temperatures in winters. The town is home to SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, which is the largest telescope in the southern hemisphere. In winter guests may experience snow, and in spring the veld comes to life with spring flowers.

Nice place to stay and has all the amenities you would expect. A fence to keep out the neighborhood kids would have been better, but I am also aware that security is not a big issue in Sutherland.
Everything as per the website information provided.
We could watch the rugby at the Whitehouse Inn, great atmosphere. Loadshedding meant we had to find a kind local to boil us water for early morning coffee. Gas plate would help. Otherwise fabulous. Overcast weather meant our observatory booking was cancelled. It did not spoil our time. We'll be back.
It's our second time at Artists Cottage and everything is well furnished and tidy. The master bedroom has a heater and electric blankets, which help a lot in the cold. The double volume sitting/dining room (without a ceiling) means you need a big fire to warm it up.
We had a wonderful stay. Everything is very clean and tidy. Will definitely come back again.
Great Stay. One thing we noticed, is the fireplace lets some smoke into the house, perhaps a kind of closed wood burner would help this to some degree, just a suggestion.
The hostess Lanie welcomed us warmly, she also answered our telephone inquiries and provided us with the necessary information. Artist Cottage is centrally located and close to everything.
The extra room to the original building was disturbing with guests against us. Love the historical photos and furniture.
Artist Cafe, catered to all our needs. Our purpose was to get away from work, so the no WiFi was not a problem for us.
Good bedding and a fireplace against the cold, however, there is a lack of attention to detail. Constantly dripping taps, water that takes forever to warm, dirty eating utensils
One drove through quietly from Stellenbosch and was surprised by how nice the cottage is. Perfect for a small group of friends. The indoor braai/fireplace was a lifesaver and kept the whole place warm and cosy. The stars were of course the main point, but we drove about 2 km out of Sutherland to experience the full impact (the backyard, by the braai pit, was a bit sprinkled with ambient lights), regardless, the night light was stunning everywhere. The cottage was clean, homely, and had good quality bedding. The bath was actually a lovely relaxing extra. We plan to go back in the summer.
The Artist Cottage was perfectly equipped for the cold. Electric blankets on the beds, extra blankets, nice thick duvets and even hot water bags - just remember to fill the boiler before you go to bed in case the pipes are frozen the next morning and you want a cup of peasant comfort. Experiencing Sutherland in the winter in the snow is something everyone should experience at least once. One wonders what the boo shark is all about, but experiencing the snow is truly "magical". The experience made me feel childishly happy. The church bell ringing was another highlight for us. Sutherland we will definitely see you again!
Wonderful stay and beautiful house, thank you. Shower just needs attention, it was blocked. Advance notification on where to find the cottage’s key. We battled to find out where the key was, website then assisted.
Second time we have stayed there and once again left very satisfied. Clean, tidy and fully equipped.

The Artist Cottage is very cosily furnished, not too far from the Observatory. We had foreign visitors with us and they were very impressed with the accommodation.
Fantastic place to stay. The cottage is excellently equipped, especially the fireplace and woodpile for the cold evenings. The low door frame gave me and the family a few unpleasant head bumps. The door and reflective tape are the same color. Severe injury suffered on the back at the bottom of the handrail. Could not locate the owner as the numbers provided were incorrect and alternate contact did not respond to messages.
The accommodation is nicely located and it's a nice cozy and intimate doll house. Meet all needs.

Clean, neat place to stay. Fireplace was a winner in the cold weather.
The cottage is cutely furnished. Note that the upstairs room's stairs are very steep and not accessible for older people. The furniture is carefully selected and comfortable. The bath of the upper room is not private enough, guests moving below can look in from various places. A skylight for the upper toilet, as well as the room, would be a great recommendation, it would give a unique view of the stars, but also let in air and light. The lower shower needs a screen - the whole bathroom is wet and slippery when one tries to shower, which is very dangerous on the slippery cement floor, especially for elderly people and small children.
We had a wonderful stay in the cold. The house was wonderfully warm. The kitchen may need more pots, pans and bowls. The beds make terrible noise and the mattresses feel like a water bed.
The house's double volume makes it constantly cold, the small heater in the bedroom is not sufficient. There is a hearth but no wood, the owner can warn in advance to bring own wood. The shower is either blazing hot or freezing cold and our towels smelled of smoke.
