20 guests' feedbackThe Berries has a homely feel and is perfect for two couples with or without kids. It is quaint and well equipped.
Great spot for rest, nice and relaxing. Appreciated the quiet.
Berries has a beautiful native garden that makes you feel like you are far away from civilization. There is a large covered parking space for the car which offers shelter from sun and rain. Our dogs were together, the stairs make it a bit difficult for them, but they soon got used to it. The fridge didn't work and blew hot air in, so we had to throw food away, however there are plenty of restaurants in the area. There is no microwave oven, but there is a stove and barbecue area.
Very good location by the sea with beautiful sunset and partial sea view. Nice garden and very comfortable.
We were initially a little disappointed because the condition of the house outside was disappointing. Expectation and realisation, the snackwich maker was on when we got there which can be quite a fire hazard. The kettle and toaster did not work, nor did the fridge work very efficiently. There was one pot that had not been cleaned. If I can make some suggestions it would be to get a microwave oven, to make sure the guests have candles, or know where to get the candles especially if it is loadshedding. Make sure the light for loadshedding is plugged in and charged to make it convenient for the quest. Make sure there is mosquito room spray for the guests as no one expects there to be so many mosquitoes during the night. The kitchen sink was very interesting and could definitely be improved. Now that I know what to expect I will definitely come back, but unfortunately not all my quests have the same opinion.
Relaxed, good location.
Everything needed is in the house. Outdoor barbecue only, but was fine as we had lovely evenings.
The house has a nice feel, with enough space. Lovely shower! Think the garden is a bit neglected.
One relaxes at home. No TV is a bonus. The house is very close to the beach. It is a very comfortable house.
Well appointed accommodation. Found very clean and tidy. We felt very sorry for the owner, whose sea view was completely stolen by millionaire super residences.
The beds definitely need new mattresses and there is no view of the sea. You are walking distance from the sea. Unfortunately there is another unit blocking your view of the sea. There are also units under construction (end of 2021). I just think it's important to know what you're paying for. Personally, the unit is overpriced for what is available.
The marketing gives a false impression. It looks like the house is quite nice and large and away from other houses and situated in a rustic environment. In reality, the house is a run-down, almost shack-like place. It is very small, and surrounded by large double storeys close on 3 sides. When you get there your jaw drops as you can't believe it's the same place as in the main picture. If it was half the price and one knew more realistically what it was like it would be okay, as there were some positives. We were allowed to take our dogs which was a huge positive. The other houses are so close that we had to listen to the neighbour's long cell phone conversation about 30 meters away while braai-ing at the boma, and loud partying on the Saturday night. The house is close to the railway line (about 10 meters and noisy trains come by about every 3 to 4 hours, around the clock. The location is good though in the sense that it is close to the beach and in a very scenic area. The house is not suitable for 8 people. There isn't even seating for 8 people, and for e.g. 3 wine glasses, and certainly not enough hot water, which seems to be on a timer. Positive? Great books in bookcase, and lovely indigenous garden and braai area. There are 2 small rooms with double beds, that would be a bit cramped for 2 couples, and then 4 single beds only really suitable for small kids or very casual teenagers, in a sort of curtained off area in open-plan lounge come dining section. Thus overall suitable for small family with small kids, who want to mainly do beach stuff or day trips, that don't care so much about privacy or noise, or mod cons or fancy furnishings and don't care about having comfy seating for all at once ... and if the price were halved.
For some reason the description on the website fails to state that the "house" is rustic? One side of the sink balances on the washing machine! We had to DIY our own curtain for the window above the toilet facing the street. No cupboard hanging space for clothes. Without any chairs or shade on the deck/patio, one cannot use the outside area. There is no fireplace or braai, only a small firepit in the far corner of the plot with no braai equipment, unless one counts the rusted folding braai grid with no stand. Note that there is one bathroom/toilet (without a lock) and seating space in the lounge for 5 people only. Generally old and unacceptable facilities.
The Berries provides the perfect authentic beach cabin holiday. Rustic, with all essential facilities, we had the most comfortable and enjoyable time there. A short walk from the beach meant it was easy to hop down for a swim any time. The lovely pit braai area outside meant we could lovely views of the sunset while braaiing.
A really lovely rustic and homely cabin. Pots and pans need replacing and in need of some wine glasses. It really is wonderfully located but unfortunately the housing developments next door take away a lot of what I once imagine was pure charm.
Elands Bay is the ideal place for any nature lover, and anyone looking for peace and quiet. The Berries is located in a nature reserve where we got very excited about the fynbos and rare bird species. Beautiful view of the bay and nice shells to pick up. The Berries is a spacious, homely place that is well equipped for everyone's needs. We walked on the rocks at low tide, played in the waves or just sat and watched the surfers in the giant waves. If you ever go to the West Coast, you don't want to miss Elands Bay, and The Berries is the ideal place to stay to take it all in.
We loved the simplicity and the setting of The Berries! And we received very good service from the owner.
Although we had a great time with friends and experienced Elands Bay as a real gem, we were sorely disappointed in The Berries. To mention a few things: The photos are years old. Now the house looks very neglected and worn out. You have to bring your own bedding and the beds and mattresses that are there are already several years old. It's not usually a problem for us to take our own bedding, but if you pay what The Berries charge, you at least expect bedding. The house can accommodate 8 people but there are only 5 chairs to sit on outside. However, the worst was the condition of the plates and crockery. I haven't found plates and cups that are so chipped. Shocking and creepy. The pan in which one had to bake eggs was dirty and full of bumps and the non-stick part was no longer there. There was only 1 decent wine glass. In the end we had to buy glasses from the hotel and restaurant so that we could all have wine glasses. We just donated them to The Berries. Not value for money at all and we wouldn't recommend it at all unless you like to drink coffee like that between the chips.
The house itself is not bad if a bit neglected. The mattresses are on the old side and were really very uncomfortable. The crockery is in condition and has seen better days. No microwave oven. There is not enough storage space, e.g. the freezer compartment of the fridge was not clean. The braai place is in the open. And was very inconvenient. The photos are misleading and must have been taken a few years ago. You don't get what you pay for.
