This unit is fully furnished and comprises 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The main room is downstairs and has a king-size bed while the second bedroom upstairs contains another king-size bed, as well as 2 single beds. There is also 1 single bed in the open-plan living area, and the bathroom contains a bath, basin and toilet.
All lights in the house are powered by batteries, and candles are supplied for additional lighting. Hot water is heated with gas as well.
The kitchen includes the necessary facilities to prepare meals, such as a gas stove with an oven; a kettle; a fridge-freezer; and a few built-in cupboards to store crockery and cutlery. The lounge area also features comfortable couches, and there is a fireplace which can be used to keep the cold at bay. Outdoor braai facilities are available as well, and pets are welcome on the property.
Activities at The Bird’s Nest that guests can enjoy are hiking, cycling, and 4x4 trails if the equipment is brought with. The farm is located in the mountains of the Drakensberg region, and the nearest town is Underberg, which is about 45 km away.

9 guests' feedbackIt took us five and a half years to come and relax here again and this time we stayed for a full week. And it still wasn't long enough! One just cannot get enough of the silence, tranquility and enchanting views. Fantastic.
The area is absolutely beautiful. Maybe you should just let future tourists know that a ± 80km dirt road will be driven. The unit could have been a little cleaner. There is dust mainly in the attic and cobwebs everywhere. A light outside can also help a bit in the evening, because it's pitch dark there. The unit is well equipped, and we lacked nothing. The shower was a bit of a challenge though. Will visit again, this time we know what awaits us.
A remote rustic spot, no internet/cell comms at the cottage, so the perfect place for a technology detox and to rekindle the art of face-to-face communication in beautiful surroundings. Expansive views with a lovely garden outside the cottage. Candle light, gas and batteries gave us hot water and a cold fridge. A roaring fire in the massive fireplace was enough to keep the whole cottage toasty in cold and drizzly weather.
Bedding in main bedroom was covered with pet hair which triggered allergies of one family member.
The Bird's Nest / Bridal Veil chalets are amazing. It's in the middle of the mountains with no other people in sight. We really enjoyed watching the waterfall and stars from our bed, sitting under the waterfall, walking in the mountains and sitting in front of the fireplace at night. Absolute rest for your soul.
Nice to be away from it all without signal.
Very nice stay - environment is incredibly beautiful. Better signage and directions would be a plus. There is no signal, and the nearest town is Himeville - about an hour's drive. There are also no GPS coordinates - so drive by feel. There was no one to welcome us and it made us feel a bit insecure. The chalet was unlocked and the key was inside on the table, but no note. No problem if there is no welcome committee, but leave a note to make the visitors feel welcome.
The Bird's Nest will always have a very special place in my heart. It was where I was able to reconnect with my family after many years apart. A lot of misunderstandings were settled and a beautiful relationship was established once again. Bird's Nest really is the perfect spot if you need stillness and nature to retore your soul. Thanks Merlyn and Linton for your hospitality and friendliness. You were awesome hosts!
If you, like us, want to experience absolute silence and to be surrounded by nature, Bird's Nest is the place to be. The view is breathtaking and although the chalet isn't luxurious (thank goodness, it brings you down to earth), it contains everything you need for self-catering. We had a fantastic 2 nights at Bird's Nest and wil definitely go again (and for longer next time)!
