54 guests' feedbackWarm welcome, nice rooms, warm, clean bedding. Everything neat and clean.
Very nice, clean, well equipped.
Very nice stay, quiet, good service.
We stayed at the weekend in one of the Fishermans Cottages (No 18). Was there on a previous occasion for the delicious pizzas, but didn't check in there. This time we decided to stay at The Old Hatchery. When we arrived, Daniel recognized us and immediately called us by name! We were immediately helped with everything so that we could just relax. We enjoyed all our meals at the restaurant and the food was great and also received good service. Our accommodation was clean and very tidy. Linen etc. was clean The fireplace was packed when we arrived and more than enough wood for the weekend. We were assured that they will bring more wood if needed. My fiancee hurt her back over the course of Saturday. By Sunday morning she could barely walk. Daniel and Nathan helped us with medication and a good cappuccino before we hit the road home. Thank you very much for your help! We will definitely eat and stay there again and can really recommend The Old Hatchery.
The Old Hatchery granted us early check-in so we could embark on a Sani Pass tour. Unfortunately, the area was plagued not only by load shedding but power failure technical faults. Nothing the lodge could do about it. However, they have a generator to keep the restaurant going and we were very grateful for that.
Lovely affordable accommodation with friendly staff and great restaurant.
We had a great time at the Old Hatchery. Comfortable stay, spectacular setting and really nice food at the Waterfall restaurant.
Many thanks. Exactly what we needed, good food and special arrangements were made to accommodate us for leaving early to start our ride.
Als had what was needed, also in loadshedding we could boil water and burn lights, although unit 16, our friends' place, was very poor and problems were brought to the attention of management and nothing was done about it. We then only gave them one of the rechargeable lights so that they could have light during loadshedding, otherwise it was wonderful. Trolley may just be placed outside earlier for the people who want to ride earlier, but thank you, enjoyed the Sani Pass excursion with Sani Tours very much and recommend it to everyone.
What a disappointment! It looks like they are renovating, but nothing is finished. There was only 1 teaspoon for 6 guests. One bed did not have an electric blanket on it. There was no boiler for the gas stove. No lamps for load shedding. If we wanted to eat in the restaurant, we had to do it before 19h00, as the staff were exhausted from a German tour group the day before.
The stay was nice, just a pity on arrival The Old Hatchery was not aware of our arrival and stay.
Only negative was that during a very protective electricity outage, the generator in place powered all the cottages except the one we were staying at. No alternative working devices such as working paraffin lamps or gas cookers.
Was an awesome get away, Daniel outdid himself with all the arrangements. Was a surprise getaway for hubby and me, with a picnic and sightseeing. Cabin was cosy, food was delicious, service was excellent.
Enjoyed it a lot. Most beautiful views. Nice and quiet.
A special mention to the friendly, helpful staff, especially you restaurant manager and the Irish waiter. Your food was very good and fresh. My wife loved your G&T's. It was very cold but and abundance of wood was made available. Everybody went out of their way to make it a pleasant stay. Thank you.
Beautiful place to stay with great views.
I had a lot of trouble with wet wood that I had to buy from them, although the manager finally said I didn't have to pay for it. The cutlery in the cabin left much to be desired. One teaspoon and the rest was not much more. But otherwise nice stay.
Bonus points: Friendly reception, peaceful atmosphere. All DStv channels. Equipped for self-catering for a weekend. Close to Sani Pass. Negative points: Cottage C16 needs an upgrade and a good clean. No free WiFi as advertised.
However, facilities of units need maintenance.
Rooms were neat and clean in the self-catering department, the restaurant's food was very tasty and fast. We were received with kindness. Although it is a self catering unit, little things like instant coffee and essentials would have helped, we got there late at night and shops were ready.
With rain we couldn't grill - kitchen staff offered to grill meat quickly. Wonderful service from the place. Had a great time and will definitely visit again in 2021. Central to explore rest of the South Drakensberg. Not far at all from Gauteng with N3.
The only problem is that the parking is far away from many of the units. There is a very nice barbecue under the trees with a fantastic view over the hills. The restaurant also served a very nice breakfast.
Very friendly staff! Great restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Rooms are equipped with everything you need for a night's stay. Will definitely stay with them again!
Otter's Den was very tidy, but the roof leaked in four places, the toilet of Room 13 leaked, faucet leaked in Room 11's bathroom, air conditioner in living room was out of order, power kept kicking out and extremely disappointing that there was no fireplace was not The braai facilities were also inadequate and impractical. The meals at the restaurant were very tasty and reasonably priced. The reception was unprofessional as there were many uncertainties about the reservation and outstanding amount payable, no documentation was available.
A very neat place with a great restaurant.
We had a wonderful time, everyone is very friendly and the place is incredibly neat and picturesque. We enjoyed every moment.
Would only be better if there were televisions in the fishing cabins. After a hard day of exploring, one wants to lie back and watch TV. Was very disappointed in it.
I was looking for a beautiful view but there was a big tree in front of our place and builder's rubble. Delicious food at the restaurant. The unit needs a lot of maintenance.
Good value for money and very convenient to have a restaurant on the property. The fisherman's cabin is perfect for a break away weekend.
The Old Hatchery's accommodation is very neat. There is everything you need to stay there longer such as a washing machine with tumble dryer. It offers a lovely view. Each room has its own bathroom. The parking lot is a bit awkward on the slope for people who are disabled. The on site restaurant service and food was very good.
The accommodation was of excellent quality, beautiful and clean. The Old Hatchery is situated in a peaceful and beautiful area. Would love to stay there again in future.
Clean and neat. Would go back there.
Access was straightforward and easy to locate. The staff were friendly and welcoming - nothing seemed too much trouble. The B&B arrangements were secure and comfortable. A great base from which to explore the access routes in the valleys leading to Drakensberg Gardens.
Would definitely recommend it.
Very friendly reception, neat rooms and very good food and service.
Good service. Room was neat and clean. Dinners were great. Very nice view.
Relaxing and rejuvinating.
We had a great stay, only two things bothered us. It is difficult to walk with heavy luggage from the car to the cottage. It would be good if some of the staff could help with luggage. The dogs on the premises were also disturbing.
Amazing location and lots of potential. Security is not good and the doors to the outside can be easily opened. Felt very unsafe in the evening. The cleanliness of the unit was also not good and it felt dirty. There were cobwebs everywhere inside and outside indicating that cleanliness is not a priority. One of the units in front of the Kingfisher we stayed in had its roof covered with a black plastic sheet. If attention is paid to the maintenance and the security then this is a place I will visit again and again. But I'm afraid I won't be visiting again unless there is a drastic change under management.
The food and drinks are very affordable. The environment is an absolute must to experience. There is so much to do - mission stations, Sani pass, rowing and cycling.
We had good accommodation and their dinner and breakfast were excellent in a homely atmosphere.
Highly recommend it.
Management and staff all very helpful and friendly, we enjoyed our meals.
I would recommend The Old Hatchery to anyone needing a pleasant place to stay on a trip to the Berg area. The room I stayed in was superb & unbelievable in size plus a super bath room. Food & staff excellent. I felt a little lonely being the only guest & sleeping in the large guest house on my own.
The general impression is good and the restaurant great. The large Otter's Den House has the best view, but is too close to the noisy bar. Brown Trout, although no view, is well appointed and away from the noise.
What beautiful surroundings and tranquility after a long drive! The room was stunning. The evening air was quite chilly when we went to the restaurant for supper just to find a cozy fire, sharp service and excellent food. I would definitely recommend The Old Hatchery to family and friends.
We see you again.
Yes, it is a beautiful and peaceful place. We will go again one day. Thank you very much!
We enjoyed our stay. However we would recommend having a few hiking trails leaving from The Old Hatchery premises (perhaps the owners could look into what permits would be required if they're inclined). It was a peaceful and friendly experience! Thank you!
We (myself and partner), were looking for the perfect place for my birthday celebration (20 August). We only had the idea of being alone, away from work, family, and friends. In fact, away from EVERYTHING. At the Old Hatchery we found just that. It's so beautiful, we really enjoyed ourselves, and my birthday, there. Many thanks to TravelGround and Old Hatchery staff!
