This lodge is very neat and decent with a central location. It is homely and inviting.

When we arrived, the person trying to locate our booking and take us to our room, did not seem to be an official receptionist because he eventually had to call somebody to find our booking as he was unable to. The bathroom towels were grey and frayed, not what we expected at any establishment. There was only one large enough towel, the rest were hand towels, although we booked the room for 2 people. The coffee and tea station also only catered for one guest. In general the room didn't seem to be maintained. One of the curtain tiebacks was broken off. The breakfast was disappointing. It incorporated some fried eggs being kept warm and mostly meaty dishes. The only positives were the kitchen staff, who offered to fry a fresh egg when we requested one, and the receptionist the following morning when we checked out, whom we cannot fault. She was extremely friendly and check-out was a breeze. It is a pity about our first impression and the condition of the place. We will most definitely not return or recommend this establishment.

The quality of the rooms was very very far from a 4 star rating, or else our standard has fallen massively! The rooms are advertised with air conditioning: Not 1 of our 2 rooms I booked had air conditioning! The rooms could have been cleaner, the towels were very old and frayed, some of the faucet handles were gone, the one room bathroom light was off, and although they say they do room service, according to their menu, only fish was available out of the whole menu down ...and that was the extent of our choices! We had to drive to find food after 12 hours on the road! Ridiculous! I specifically requested that there be a refrigerator in the room for my medication, which they said would be there by default. They had to change the fridge and then switch rooms for me to get a working fridge. No wall plugs or adapters were available for my phone! The reception was playing music so loud that I couldn't hear what she was saying to me when we checked in! There were no bedside tables next to the bed to store things like phones, keys, wallets etc. not put up! I travel a lot for business right across the country and have stayed in all kinds of places, but this one was the biggest disappointment ever! I was aware that Polokwane does not have 4/5 star hotels, but was quite lucky to be able to find a 4 star lodge... much to my shock! My room was against the road. Every time a truck drove by, it sounded like it was going to drive into my room! At least I'll tell them this: after a big explanation, they at least served us fried eggs hot for breakfast with nice coffee and toast! I am very sorry but I will NEVER stay there again nor advise anyone else to go there!

Visiting Polokwane again after 25 years was wonderful for us. The hospitality, friendly reception and help with inquiries from the staff means that we would recommend the Shamrock Lodge to anyone. The room service with breakfast the morning of our departure was great. Keep it up Shamrock!

"Given the price of R1000+ the room condition is quite poor."

Too few electrical plugs, wires lying around, toilet roll holder taken off and rolling on toilet, fridge switched off and left open, 1 cup, glass and no teaspoon in cupboards. Bedside lamp cannot be plugged in while TV and computer are plugged in. Restaurant advertised but clearly not available. When it comes to room service from the kitchen, most options on the menu are not available. Parking clearly not enough for the rooms and access very difficult. I will not use or recommend it again. Not 4 star in my opinion.

We booked 2 rooms. 1 for 2 adults and 1 room for our children. When we arrived in the evening, the children's rooms were on the other side of the building. They were friendly and tried to get a room closer but still on another level and unsafe. We were obliged to pay for another "executive" room to get the children closer to us. None of the advertised spa baths in the rooms work. The rooms are not maintained. The towels are faded and smell bad. The bedding is worn. Definitely not a 4 star guest house as advertised. For almost R2000 for one night for a family of 4 we could have stayed at a boutique hotel.
