The Shoe Guest House is owned by The Shoe Ministries, a non-profit organisation which uses the guest house to obtain money for their goal, to preach the Gospel to all nations. It provides basic accommodation on a fenced farm in the middle of the bushveld and is home to 'The Shoe', a 12-metre long shoe that doubles as a museum and a gallery.
This establishment runs on 80% solar power and comprises 8 separate chalets, 4 of which are back-to-back under one roof. This used to be a large farmhouse which was separated into 4 chalets. These chalets are all equipped for self-catering and are large and spacious, making it ideal for big groups. The other 4 stone-built chalets are built against the foot of the mountain, 2 of which are private, detached, self-catering units and 2 of which are only suites. Amenities include a bathroom, bar fridge and tea- and coffee-making facilities.
Each unit has 1 DSTV channel and an OVHD decoder, fans, and private braai areas. All kitchens are fully equipped with cutlery, stoves, and microwaves. Bedding is provided as well as towels, however, it must be asked for. An open-air, cold water swimming pool en pool table are available to guests.
The Shoe Guest House is in the process of going 'green' and because of the solar power, no electric heaters will be supplied or allowed in our units. If you are staying in a stone-built unit, 1 bag of free firewood will be provided for you to burn in the indoor fireplace. Any additional bags of wood can be purchased from the Kiosk. All beds are also provided with hot water bottles. Please keep this in mind before booking for this may be a problem to some guests. Hot water is made with a wood-fired donkey and all chalets are fitted with gas stoves for heating water and cooking.
Furthermore, the Tea Garden is open to guests between 9:00 and 17:00. Light meals and breakfasts are served all day. Dinner can be arranged on request.

Although the accommodation is well appointed, it feels like we paid way too much. Everything (towels, crockery, etc.) is very old and weathered. I think with some good renovations, it could become a very nice place to stay.
One can clearly feel that there is a presence of the Holy Spirit and that they follow the principles of the Bible. Recommended for any church group to spend the time there and visit the cave.
What a place! The owner and staff do everything they can to make your stay as pleasant as possible. There was always plenty of hot water, and the units were clean and well maintained. Yvonne's food in the restaurant is delicious. It is definitely not meant for people who like music and parties. I look forward to going back.

The accommodation reminded me of my Grandmother's house, cozy and warm. Unfortunately couldn't get to the cave with excavations, but sculpture was stunning.
Neat, hospitable, beautiful area, well equipped, easily accessible from the road. I liked that the rooms were built very naturally, bonus points for the use of green power.
The electrical wiring in place is a fire and a shock hazard. Some of the beds are made by themselves. The cupboards, made at home, and can not really be used. One evening when we came back there was no electricity in parts of the house, including our fridge. It will only be restored the next morning. Otherwise not too bad.
The location is very central to the area's attractions. The hostess, Michelle, made us feel very welcome. The rooms were neat and clean. We would recommend "The Shoe Guesthouse" for a peaceful and pleasant stay.
I would not mind going back at any time. I would recommend it to anyone I know. A very good, quiet place to rest.

It is one very beautiful place with a nice atmosphere! I would recommend this place to anyone who asks! We were there for only one night, but it was lovely!
The reception at the place was very welcoming and the people very nice. The set-up is of a pleasant nature where one can just sit back and hang out with the management. It was a peaceful setting and ideal for just relaxing.

Everything we could need was there, everything was neat and clean. The place already has its own history, so if you like history and something unique, this is definitely the place for you.
Me, my mother and sister spent 1 night there. The unit was quite tidy, but safety is a major concern. The units are very close to the Lydenburg/Ohrigstad main road and the premises are closed only with a lift gate. The beds' mattresses are only sponge which is very soft and does not sleep comfortably at all. The 2 duplex beds which make it very dangerous for young children
There is a spacious double bedroom. The bunker beds are in the living room. It is rather dark inside and the room is decorated as a sort of cave. The bathroom is "special" too. There is a braai outside and a place to eat. There is no dining table inside, you can eat at the kitchen bar. The place is a bit outdated and the apartment not very clean. The location is good to visit the Echo Caves just a few kilometers away. It is also near The Three Rondavels and other sightseeing places. There are no shops in the neighbourhood, but there is a small shop at the reception with the most important things you'll need.
I only had one quick sleep over, and it was exactly what I expected. Value for money! Clean and tidy. I would stay there again anytime.

This is a family business that is interested in making your stay easier. Real peasant food was served and we thoroughly enjoyed it!
The Australian kids enjoyed the braais with real wood very much. The tour of the echo caves was very interesting and the alpha and omega garden as well as the spiritual cave was unexpected and special.
Feel free to ask the staff to inform you about the surroundings and things to do.

We experienced an electricity power cut on our second day. I think it would be better if a generator could be connected to all of the rooms in the house, in case of future power cuts.
