15 guests' feedbackPeace and quiet, but the toilet leaked and it would have been nice to know when load shedding was.
The Tin Shack is nice and cosy, kitted out with the things you need, including a lovely fireplace, books, and games. The views are spectacular. The bass fishing was so much fun! Friendly dogs and our guard goose. The bird watching was amazing. On the tarred road and not far from town, we really enjoyed the peace and beauty!
It's aged and needs some upkeep, especially the deck is caving in and there is no handrail on the steps.
Was right for the price.
Very nice location, blissful.
As an option for an unplanned getaway to KZN, Tin Shack was the ideal place to switch off and rest in beautiful surroundings. The hostess was always available without bothering. The "farm feel" was a blessing for us.
The fireplace in the living room is very pleasant. View over the dam is beautiful. Blue cranes came to visit.
The owner left the key under the mat and did not come to introduce herself, although she communicated with us via Whatsapp. When we walked into the Tin Shack it smelled of sour milk inside. The house's wood inside is pretty rotten, the roof hangs and it also leaks. The bathroom was quite nice. The cold hit through the floor and we had to go get our own duvet because we got terribly cold. My husband and I are often in the mountains and sleep in caves or tents so we are not full of fiemies at all. This is just not our idea of rustic. Rustic must still be neat and hygienic, it's not an excuse to make things look that way. The owner said: "The Tin Shack is rustic, but not everyone's cup of tea." Maybe it's just not our cup of tea.
We booked this shack for our 31st wedding anniversary as it was secluded, private, and seemed like a great establishment. How wrong we were. Mrs. Watson advised us while we were traveling that they were not on the farm, but had left the keys under the mat at the front door. Not a major issue. We love rustic and have booked many times into rustic establishments. Rustic does not mean dirty or neglected. Once inside we found out how wrong we had been. The following issues came to light or not as it turned out. The kitchen and lounge area had one tiny light above the fridge. The other globe in the same fitting did not work. Neither did the lights in the bedrooms, these are only bedside lights. There are no ceiling lights in the bedrooms. The bedroom plug, for lights, hairdryers, etc, is controlled by a cable from a plug point in the lounge, which was being used by a fan and the cable was well hidden behind the fan. This we only found out by accident on day two of our stay. The wardrobes are a dusty dirty mess with spare blankets tossed onto the floor of the cupboards. We did not use these at all. The bathroom had no shower curtain, just a broom handle where a curtain once was. After the first shower, the bathroom floor and mat were wet. There were years of dirt around the taps in the kitchen and bathroom basin. I contacted Mrs. Watson, who apologized and said, amongst many many "ag shame, ag shames", that she had not checked the shack and blamed an unknown cleaner for the state of the place. Mrs. Watson did buy replacement lamps and a shower curtain and asked if I could fit them. These were left at the front door as we were in Underberg at the time. On the second day, we had a good look around and realized that the place was in very bad shape. Window frames have very bad wood rot, some had hinges that are rotted off and could not open for fear of falling out of the frames. Some windows and doors were screwed and nailed shut with wooden planks across the frames. Nails were sticking out on the floorboards all over and the stairs are rickety with most nails half knocked in. The top stair to the braai area is so loose it gives way underfoot. The ceiling is busy collapsing in one section of the shack. The fire extinguisher is out of order with the needle in the red. There is no label evident on the extinguisher of its compulsory yearly test. The owners of the unit never once came to introduce themselves. The only contact we had was by mobile phone. We saw a young chap working on a piece of machinery as we drove past the main house. He gave us a sullen look. The farm labourer, however, did wave at us whenever he saw us. I have pictures of all the noticeable faults. How bad and rotten the wall frames are is anyone's guess. All this is a pity because the shack is in a nice spot with fantastic views. . The linen supplied was crisp and clean, as were the towels. The hot water was great. Lots of guinea fowl, cranes, and other birdlife hang around the shack.
When we got there we received no welcome, just a message saying the key was under the carpet by the door. The place is very dirty and needs a lot of attention. Sofas in living room are dirty and full of stains. Was supposed to stay there for 2 nights but immediately looked for other accommodation for the 2nd night.
Cosy little cottage far away from everything. Farm animals came to visit often, and the hosts were fantastic and very welcoming. We'll be seeing you again.
The tin shack was wonderful, nice and secluded, very private and comfortable which is exactly what we wanted. Sophie was a lovely hostess and very friendly and helpful.
A beautiful, quiet farm where you can find rest and peace, and if you need, quiet time with God. Bass fishing - lekker! I will return to the Tin Shack. I loved it!
Stayed at the Tin Shack for a friend's wedding. Beautiful place and very helpful when our GPS got us lost. Would definitely stay there again!
Great value for money. We absolutely loved this charming and artistically created shack home. So unique and peaceful overlooking a lovely dam and majestic mountains in the foreground. The owner was incredibly accommodating and friendly although cell phone reception is not great in the area. Although the dam levels were low as evident throughout KZN, the waters were still teaming with birdlife and we enjoyed taking photos in the golden hours of the evening.
