The location was fantastic. We saw many whales from our porch sitting and watching while we barbecued. Everything was comfortable and clean. The big draw was Fryers Cove winery and we basically just rolled down the hill to get there. It was delicious!

Thornbay is ideally located in Thornbay with the most beautiful view over Frayers Cove and the lighthouse. The massive rocks and ocean view is also a winner. Everything is neat and clean, equipped with everything one could need! I would definitely recommend it.

The most beautiful unobstructed view of the sea, sleep with the sound of the sea in your ears. Very friendly host and wife, the accommodation has everything you need and you feel right at home as soon as you step inside.

The only suggestion we can make is, as we were unaware of the drinking quality of the area's water supply, if a bottle of water is provided for guests it would take the guess work away. Or, if the water is 100% fit for drinking, a note to this effect could be placed somewhere easy to see.
My daughter and I went to stay at Doringbaai for a week. Although there is nothing to do for children, we went precisely to get away from the noise. We were able to rest wonderfully, and for most of the time we kept each other company. We went to eat waffles on Strandfontein, and on Lutzville we went to drink 'coffee' at 'die buurvrou'. Discovering the small towns was delightful, and an adventure in itself. Of course there was Fryer's Cove. There you can taste wine, with a beautiful new wine cellar, complete with a fish tank that shows you the species in the area. The restaurant is now indoors, and you can still see, smell and experience the sea as you dine on their deliciously prepared food. Even the salad was truly delicious and different. Add to that some whales and dolphins frolicking in the sea, and it's truly heavenly. All that is needed is for the Matzikamma municipality and its residents to clean up the town.
There are only certain satellite/television channels available and you do not have control over all the channels. It is changed from time to time by the owner as they see fit. Some of the channels also got stuck. This caused irritation as I was watching a show then it would switch to another show. The written instructions are confusing and not clear. The map does indicate the longer pitch. The written directions regarding the R366 road that turns away from the N7 later takes you to dirt roads. It was raining and in places the road was very bad with mud and water. I did make the choice to follow the shorter road, but if I had known that it was a dirt road, I would have taken the tarmac (which is 80 km longer) instead. I believe a regular sedan vehicle would have stalled. Google Maps is also not clear whether it is tarmac or dirt road. Perhaps there could be more specific, more clearly descriptive options here. We had a great stay and rested well. Nature is beautiful with a sea view on your doorstep. Beautiful sunsets and a refreshing environment.

The view is great. You can walk to eateries, shop and abalone farm. Unique winery and fishing liberties are within walking distance.

We had a wonderful stay, would only have liked more silence. We could hear people who lived next to us all the time. The TV did not work, the reception is poor. The antenna wire is broken. Cell phone reception is very bad. WiFi was also not offered. I don't know if they have it, but it was the most awkward part of the whole visit. I would recommend that attention be paid to the coffee, sugar, tea and milk section. I think it needs attention.
View was off the books. Was there for three days and only had one roll of toilet paper between two people for the 3 nights, as well as no soap or any personal "care" products. Don't know if this is part of the offer, but all previous accommodations did have such products available in small sizes. Otherwise stay was lovely.

We received a friendly welcome from our host on our arrival. The location of the accommodation was fantastic, being right across the road from the water. The accommodation was good, and because it is self-catering, make sure to take everything you need as nothing is supplied. The only downside was that for some reason the bathroom light never went off when it was switched off, resulting in the light shining in your face when you tried to sleep.

Shark apartment: Pros: The apartment is well located with a not-so-busy street passing in front of the apartment with no buildings across the street. There is plenty of seating in the apartment, the kitchen is well equipped and the sleeping areas of the apartment are spacious and clean and tidy. The 2 bathrooms and showers make it very comfortable for a family of 6. The small not-so-nice points: The bedrooms are located at the back of the apartment and there is a rumbling sound coming from the building next door which is slightly disturbing is if you wanted to hear the waves of the sea. There is little room to move around the toilets. General feeling: The Shark apartment at Thornbay Accommodation is a very nice place to stay with a lovely view of the sea in a quiet fishing village. It is definitely recommended and is a great value for money place to sleep.
I arranged in advance and there was even wood left at our unit's braai area! There was also someone who helped us carry our luggage to the first floor!

Everything you need for a nice overnight stay (or longer stay) along the West Coast.
From arrival to departure we were served with friendly and helpful service. Unit has a beautiful sea theme, well appointed to meet all your needs. All appliances, shower, lights, etc. in good working order. Highly recommended.
I brought my wife all the way from Los Angeles specifically to stay in Thornbay’s Mackeral Room, where I stayed solo 3 years ago, to enjoy the marvellous seascapes from the balcony, meals and wine at the Fryers Cove Winery, where the aging wines are cooled with seawater piped directly in from the Atlantic. Thornbay occupies the premier scenic spot in this small village on the bluff above the bay, with unobstructed views of the picturesque bay with its rocky headlands, kelp and seabirds, replete with private diamond dredge boats. The facility is fully equipped with all the mod cons, immaculately clean, gracious hosts, and is within short walking distance to the village’s several restaurants, stores, etc. Highly recommended!

What a beautiful place and the surroundings are simply fantastic. We were in Dorado unit which is suitable for 6 people. We were 2 couples and the only problem was the single bathroom. The house was tidy and we had a beautiful view from the front room, living room and porch. We will definitely stay there again.
However, I didn't like the daughters 'welcoming' statement to me on arrival, saying that my balance was still outstanding, while I made sure I paid it before the cutoff date. What she did not take into account is that I made the payment on a public holiday, so payment would only have been reflected the next day. Luckily the mother was more aware and resolved the situation. Also didn't like the idea that my car was surrounded by dog stuff on the first morning so I just decided to park in a different space than the allocated to me and just waited for them to address it with me, which they didn't. If you going to allow pets on your premises be sure to make guests aware to pick up after their dogs. Other than that my stay was pleasant enough.

Our unit was spacious, tidy, safe and perfectly located with a breathtaking view of Doring Bay Harbour. Stairs were a bit of a challenge, especially if you have quite a bit of luggage. Only other negative was broken clotheslines on balcony. Otherwise no complaints, would stay there again!

We live in a country where loadshedding is our foreland, and no provision has been made for a light, whether it is a candle or a flashlight, to make light in the dark. A rechargeable light is extremely essential and a must in a home.

No! Me, my husband and little boy felt out of place and treated like criminals. We were quiet and tried to avoid the owner as much as possible. He was unfit and sour towards us, but very kind to others. I will never set foot in his place again nor will I advise people to use his place. We are decent civilized people who don't cause problems, and I don't like to complain, but I can't just shut up about this. Doringbaai itself is a very beautiful place.

The gas bottle of stove is in a cupboard. This is a great danger and great risk. The gas bottle must be mounted outside and locked. The dart board was taken down and not available as advertised.

Doringbaai is a hidden gem! And Thornbay Accommodation just added to our amazement. We only stopped there on route to the North, but will gladly return for the peace and quiet, beautiful sea views and spectacular sunsets right from your stoep!

If you fancy a place that is remote, few people, no shops, then this is the right place. Sea view directly on the sea while you sleep or barbecue is unforgettably nice. The owner was kind enough to move us to a unit with a braai that has a roof while it was raining because braai we will braai by the sea. Nice and clean place with all the necessary kitchen utensils. We will definitely visit a little longer next time. Thank you very much Thornbay Accommodation. Your hospitality and place are awesome.
Quick getaway from the city with family. The owners were hospitable, friendly and professional, and our unit was very thoroughly equipped with everything one could think of needing. The place was beautifully clean, the location ideal, and the indoor BBQ a huge blessing with the weather being slightly less than ideal as we were still able to appreciate the beautiful views of the sea directly opposite despite the storm. The village itself is small and unspoiled, the people warm and friendly, and the surroundings peaceful. We leave with many beautiful memories, and are already planning our next visit here.
The owners are very friendly and helpful. Wood, ice and fish are available at the shop on the premises and the owner there has good advice and recipes for a fish braai. Good stock and choice of fish species.
Small town, very quiet and tidy. Very nice sea view from the room. The dirt road to get from Clanwilliam to Doringbaai is not bad, just don't drive it when it has rained.
As far as one's accommodation options go in this village, this still remains the best. Since my last visit many years ago, they've upgraded the apartments. The interiors are clean, comfortable and still great value for money. I stayed in the Marlin unit and views of the ocean and lighthouse were superb. I will definitely use them again.

We have stayed at Thornbay Accommodation many times and always enjoy the lovely view over the sea. The Dorado residential unit in particular has a lovely view over the sea and the beautiful bay.
Doringbaai: Time stands still. No traffic or noise. 1 shop with the essentials. Accommodation: small, but neat and clean.

Never take the shortcut through Lambertsbaai if you do not have a large vehicle. The dirt road is a nightmare. Drive on the N7 through Vredendal, even if it is longer.
Quiet accommodation on the sea front.
The place is really clean and tidy. The 2 eateries close early although their food is good. And take cash if you want to use their delivery service. There is one ATM in town which is inside the bottle store - which is open from Fridays to Sundays. If you want to get away and have a good rest and do nothing, this is definitely the place. Had a great time.

We booked a stay at Thornbay Accommodation for the sea view and we were very happy with our stay. We could see the sea from our private braai area, from our kitchen and even from our bed. Also, the bed was comfortable and the owners really friendly. I recommend this place for a night stop or even for a week to relax far from the crowds.
With a view like we had, we couldn't ask for more! They welcomed us kindly even though we arrived a bit late, and my dog was also welcome which makes it a bonus. This will definitely be one of our new favorite spots. It's a gem of a place, hidden away.

We had the Shark unit, lovely big and spacious with 2 bedrooms and bathrooms and enclosed porch with a beautiful view of the bay. The unit is very well equipped and the owners and staff friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful rest. There is also a nice swimming pool to cool off.

We had a great time in Doringbaai. Just make sure you take everything you need to cook yourself, there are only 2 places in town where you can make purchases. There are restaurants to choose from, but we did our own grilling.
The apartments are by the sea, which means that you can sit on the veranda and watch the sea while you visit and have a barbecue. They also have a fish shop behind the apartments if you want fresh clams, fish, prawns etc. gain.
The location by the sea is also excellent. Definitely recommended.
Thornbay Accommodation is a hidden gem on the West Coast, run by two people who will make you feel very much at home here. A place to rest.
The accommodation is perfect with a fully equipped kitchen. The big balcony with the braai is absolutely fantastic and we joined it very much every day. Planning for coming again next year if circumstances allow.
The stay was lovely. Internet vouchers purchased but had difficulty logging in and internet not working properly. Room servicing can be improved.
Total breakaway from just about everything. Yet had the basics of a local cafe, take away and restaurant. But all of that is just a drop in the ocean if you compare the most amazing sunsets that we enjoyed night after night!

Had a good stay. Own braai area with the sea as a view makes it comfortable and wood etc. is for sale at reception. Just take coffee, rooibos tea and milk with you. It is not provided. The dish towel could also have been newer and fresher.

We only stayed two nights and enjoyed our stay. It is a shame that the shower faucet in one bathroom leaked badly, while there are notices everywhere to use water sparingly. A noisy pressure pump next to our unit was also disturbing and I am confident that management will address this. The unit has a very good view of the bay.
The unit is clean and neat with an excellent location. The ceiling fan didn't work, suspect the problem was at the wall switch. There is no big side windows or windows at the back, so the ventilation was limited. The toilet is close to the wall, so it's uncomfortable.

The unit had everything one needs. Furthermore, our 4-year-old boy could play in front of the unit without us having to worry about his safety as there were no vehicles rushing up and down Kusweg. Doringbaai's sunset is one of the most beautiful we have ever experienced. We will definitely visit again.

The owner, Michelle was very friendly, but her husband wasn't. The unit was fine at first, but then we noticed that the rug was dirty and it was hard to close the shower door. The ocean view is great. Will not recommend unless they do some serious upgrading.

Thornbay Accommodation is a winner. The apartment is comfortable and furnished practically. It is clean and neat. The beds and bedding is comfortable and more than enough. The bathroom's layout is good and everything in working order. Clean towels are provided. The kitchen also has everything you need to cook or to braai. There is so much for the kids to keep them busy with outside in the nature that the TV was hardly used. Thornbay Accommodation is located right on the coast and is safe enough for your children to walk down to the rocks to catch klipfish. The street is quiet, excellent for walks, playing, cycling, etc. I wish we could stay longer, but we will definitely go back!
We only stayed one evening and it was value for your money. The view is fantastic, the place is well-equipped and we made a nice little fire on the stoep. Every room has its own bathroom facilities, so it was very pleasant and will highly recommend it.

I booked main reason because there was a pool. According to the advertisement, it is indicated as such. When we got there we heard that it was out of order due to water restrictions. I can understand that. But I feel it should be mentioned. Very disappointing. They also make an effort to make everything pleasant for you.
We as a family love animals very much, but allowing large dogs (2) to sleep in an apartment is not acceptable.

Our accommodation is comfortable and enjoyable right across from the sea. I believe in the summer the place will be nicer. I just think people with small children will need to be careful if they have to stay in the high street accommodation where we were. There are no traffic control points, such as a stop street at the corner of Kusweg and Hoofweg or speed control on the main street. Their concession sign in Kusweg is upside down and therefore a problem.

The beach is a few meters from the apartment which makes it very convenient for those of us who like to walk along the beach and take in the breathtaking scenery. The beach is pristine with many beautiful shells. The short walkways around the coast are even safe for children. Thank you very much for the hospitality, we had a wonderful rest.

The accommodation is modern and clean. The sea view is beautiful (just across the street) and the lighthouse at the harbor has a charm of its own. I was very impressed with Thornbay accommodation. It was truly one of the cleanest places I have ever stayed. The little apartment was comfortable, nicely furnished and had everything I needed for the two nights. The view of the sea is beautiful. Belinda was particularly helpful with reception. I can definitely recommend it. Would love to stay longer. However, people should know that Doringbaai is a small secluded place - which I really liked.

Our stay at Thornbay was wonderful. Als had been clean and tidy and it was wonderful to be able to see, hear and smell the sea from the veranda. There weren't really swimming beaches for small children but we had a wonderful stay and walked around the area. A great do nothing weekend.

Neat accommodation, well maintained. Most beautiful sunsets. Quiet, friendly reception. Please, the games room should only get rules and regulations (until what time guests can relax there). Saturday night, before we left, there was quite a lot of noise until very late.
Happy to recommend for any traveler on the West Coast route. Drive a pick-up truck if you can, because the dirt roads are a bit rough.
