Toll Inn Guest Farm
-
Accommodation is offered in tastefully decorated bedrooms. All bedrooms have access to an outdoor patio and are equipped with a kitchenette with a bar fridge, microwave, a toaster, and a tea and coffee tray, as well as a TV with selected DStv channels. Limited, free Wi-Fi access is available. Guests have access to braai facilities, braai wood, and secure parking. Conference facilities are also available and need to be booked in advance.
Toll Inn Guest Farm is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding area, which offers activities such as hiking in the hillside surrounding the farm, fishing, as well as swimming in the Kraai River, and walks along the river trail. The magnificent six arch sandstone bridge, built-in 1881 is now a National Monument, guarding the entrance to 'The Inn." In days gone by, the road which passes in front of the main residence was once the route for the heavily loaded wagons of the transport riders, transporting their wares to the mountain districts of Herschel, Lady Grey, Barkly East and Rhodes, they would cross this bridge after spending the night at 'The Old Inn.'

79 guests' feedbackVery nice people go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable and it's absolutely beautiful there. Thank you Charmaine.
Delicious! Had a good warm sleep, so beautiful there! Charmaine goes to great lengths to make everyone feel at home. Our group of sisters don't sleep anywhere else on the way to the Eastern Cape!
Very good service and pampered with a delicious bottle of red wine. Thank you.
Was the perfect halfway stop. With a nice environment.
Great place to stay just outside Aliwal North.
Very peaceful and comfortable.
Unpretentious and welcoming, and I really enjoyed the walk along the river. It would have been perfect if it was a bit further away from the road as the traffic noise did mar the peace and quiet. The steak dinner was delicious, and the hostess is warm and welcoming.
Very nice, peaceful place with everything needed for the overnight traveler.
No WiFi, satellite package poor, fans do not work unless lights are on, no pool although advertised as such, bar on premises closed, animals not accessible, mattresses need replacing, road very busy at night so difficult to sleep with passing cars. Not possible to swim in dam or river as advertised. Network for cellphone had no coverage for own data, not for the WiFi offered.
We always enjoy our stay at Toll Inn Guest Farm. Also nice things to do with the kids.
The hosts were very welcoming, and the dinner was lovely.
Very friendly people and would definitely stay there again.
We enjoyed seeing the animals on the farm, also there is a beautiful walk along the river, a nice way to stretch our legs after a long drive. It was cold but the comfy beds have electric blankets so it was very pleasant.
The Toll Inn is a perfect stop-over in the Eastern Cape Highlands. Picturesque area and a lovely converted old building in a nice setting. Our host was very friendly and helpful. The unit was a little spartan on the kitchen side and a couple of areas needed a lick of paint, but we're assured that this is getting attention. Can't beat the price though!
The history of the old bridge and building enchanted me and the walk to the river was also fun for the children. The children could frolic on the large lawn and enjoyed the animals on the site.
Great service under the circumstances. Love having the animals around too.
Had a very nice time. Thank you very much.
Sauerbrug a surprise.
Nicely restored, large room and a very large bathroom. Maybe a little noisy near the road, but at least the walls are thick. We had a bit of trouble checking in as no one was at reception or answered the phone. The dinner was nice with a big 'steak' and a fresh salad. The pictures don't show the room, but there was a fridge, kettle and a microwave. The walkway along the river is beautiful!
Great halfway stop to the Cape.
We spent one night at the Toll Inn on our way from the mountains to the Western Cape. Charming little place and exactly what we needed.
Great place to spend the night.
Been there twice, one night on the way to East London and on the way back home. The first night the owner didn't even know we had booked. When we got back it was late at night. They helped us park with our big trailers, but when it came time to shower, the shower's hot tap didn't work. We tried calling, but no one answered. With a previous stay in 2021 there was no hot water for days due to a geyser that did not work. It is indeed a beautiful setting and the bridge and road along the river are beautiful, but the facilities in the cottages, especially stall 3 where pets are allowed, could be better for the price paid.
Feels like home away from home.
Nice stopover for us on the way back from East London. The nice walking route along the river is a bonus.
Historic hotel and stables converted into accommodation is very well done. The lovely shade trees in the garden and yard create a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
So good to be able to experience a historic place! Particular history. Our sandstone house was the historic toll house for the sandstone bridge over the Cat River in the 19th century.
WiFi didn't work.
Would have loved to stay longer to see more of the history.
Christine upgraded us at no further cost to a larger self-catering unit. We had a lovely unit. It's a beautiful farm. Kitchen has only basic items viz. cutlery and pots and pans. (take your own opener, bread board/bowls, sharp knife etc). Heaters in every room and electric blankets on every bed, lovely beds and bedding, as well as extra blanket. We slept soundly despite the biting cold! Most beautiful bridge and walkways between trees, wish we had more time. Extremely neat and clean with a touch of nostalgia. Huge bonus braai wood and braai where we had a great time. Farm animals were a treat!
Unfortunately there was no hot water and the bathroom flooded - but this is perhaps more associated with the weather conditions. I will stay here again to give it a second chance.
We only stayed overnight but wished we had more time to explore the area. Thank you very much for the extra effort with extra heater etc. We really appreciated it!
Playground for children.
It's a pretty peaceful environment.
Very friendly, clean, farm environment with everything you need for a comfortable stopover. The bar was closed because of covid restrictions but looked very quaint. Would definitely stay there again.
We were very welcomed at Toll Inn. Our room was spacious and beautifully warm with heater on and electric blankets waiting. Kids loved the farm animals and I am sure a walk had we had time would've been a treat. Looks like a lovely entertainment venue for weddings, birthdays etc.
Would recommend anytime. Excellent value for money. Thanks for good service.
Beautiful and neat there.
Everything was good, but there were comments about the used mattresses in room 2 and basic things like mirrors for the ladies. Otherwise we had a great stay, thank you.
It was also just a place for us to spend the night after the long drive from East London. Our rooms were very neat and comfortable for the evening's stay, even though it had been a nice and cool evening outside. Had everything we needed to prepare our food and keep cold drinks cold. Comfortable beds. It's a beautiful place, wouldn't think twice about staying here again if in the area. Not bad value for money. Very friendly owner.
Neat, clean rooms.
Neat accommodation. However, the one mattress was unsleepable and the bathroom very cramped. Still it was value for money.
The rate for our family of seven was very reasonable. It makes you uncomfortable to complain about small things. The kitchen was only basic and I struggled to cook, for example there was no ladle. The bathroom could have been a little cleaner when we arrived. The management was very helpful in relation to special requests. Value for money.
Very quiet, but short fans in rooms that work.
Toll Inn is a beautiful place with a sense of history. The facilities need some TLC, but the helpfulness and friendliness of the owners make up for it.
Toll Inn definitely needs TLC. It is located near the main road and the vehicles were moving on the road all night. Compared to the other accommodation we occupied on our short Cape tour, it falls far short especially in terms of what you get for what you pay.
Great hospitality helping us to make a plan when we needed a salad. Few areas that need attention: No air conditioning in room 6. Very hot room. No WiFi and cell signal is very weak to non existent. Fans in our room were noisy and only work if light is on.
Great overnight destination; the units are nice and spacious and have plenty of space. The surroundings are beautiful with the nearby river. The only criticism is that the kitchenette is just not well equipped to prepare food with ease. Otherwise it was lovely.
Nice owner and rooms, but too overpriced for the location and room size. Also very close to a main road, so exposed to traffic noise. The price for the location and a small unit with 5 beds squeezed in is not good value for money in my opinion.
It is one of the most beautiful places, had a really nice stay, we would have liked to stay another night, but had to drive on. Would recommend anytime. And the breakfast was beyond delicious and value for money.
Definitely highly recommended. Was wonderfully peaceful.
Unity is very neat, but very simple. No braai facilities and roof fans only work when the lights are on. Overnight facility only. No other activities available.
Not a pleasant experience and for the amount we paid not satisfied.
I just had to bring my family to Toll Inn. The place brings many memories and the hospitality of both Johan and Charmaine is excellent
Very neat, beautiful and nice stay.
New owners have many plans in changes and am wishing them all the success, all in all was an amazing place to stay back into the past crossing over the bridge built in 1880 a blast from the past. Area is peaceful with all that you need to take a stop on the way back to Pretoria.
The guesthouse's location is perfect for someone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle. The beautiful scenery, big trees and the river near you are breathtaking. The building style makes you go back in time and is charming. Very calm. Had a wonderful stay.
We were on our way to Cape Town with 3 motorbikes and appreciated a good welcome, hot shower and nice bed.
What a wonderful place, we wish we had booked a longer stay to explore the surrounds more. The accommodation is charming, well appointed and very comfortable.
Very tidy with beautiful nature and wonderful service.
Toll Inn Guest Farm was a very nice overnight stop after a long day on the road. Would definitely stay again and want to stay longer to explore the beautiful surroundings.
We had a great stay at Toll Inn. The dish soap was finished and the DStv was out of order.
Very cute with excellent potential. Tidy. A gem in the making.
Toll Inn Guest Farm is in a quiet, beautiful area. Recommendable to anyone that wants to get out of their town/city.
Toll Inn Guest Farm is in a beautiful setting just outside Aliwal North and a good choice for an overnight stay en route to tourist destinations in the Eastern Cape. Accommodation is comfortable and well equipped, even for a cold night. Staff are friendly and make guests feel welcome and at home.
Lovely old farm, wonderful atmosphere, friendly and helpful reception, great breakfast.
Great stay. Would definitely recommend to a friend!
We really enjoyed the character of the place - the "stables" we stayed in and the beautiful Sauerbrug. It was comfortable, neat and clean.
Room was adequate. Bar, breakfast and dinner service inept.
The accommodation at Toll Inn served as overnight accommodation on our journey. The hostess was friendly, the unit was clean and pleasant. There is a trail you can walk, and the dog on the premises will escort you. I won't mind staying there if I'm in the area again.
Nice accommodation, but the noise from the road could be a problem.
Toll Inn Guest Farm was a delight to visit. Just outside of town.
This unique building is situated right next to the main road, yet is well secluded from the traffic noise. The typical countryside atmosphere is calming. The bathroom we used however needs some renovation.
Good service and nice overnight visit.
