Accommodation is offered in a variety of wooden chalets. The elevated chalets have been built largely from renewable materials, with farmed pine trees being the main material. Although rustic, comfort hasn’t been compromised. The chalets are self-catering, and solar power provides electricity and hot water. Each chalet contains a large fridge-freezer, a gas oven with a hob for cooking, and a braai on the deck.
The Jackals Den and the Hares Lair are a departure from the elevated chalets; they are Hobbit homes - burrows within the red hills. There are 2 swimming pools, one of which is solar heated.
The Angulate, The Hinge-back and The Geometric chalet have private hot tubs.
On the level ground, within the bush, there is a camp with shaded pitches and clean drinking water. There is power, but being off-the-grid, power is restricted to small appliances.

285 guests' feedbackWe had a wonderful stay and were able to recharge our batteries in nature. Thanks to Gerrie and Marinda for their hospitality.
Excellent. We love the travelling tortoise.
We had a great stay at The Traveling Tortoise, the accommodation was top notch, the children really enjoyed the play area.
The accommodation has beautiful surroundings and views. The hot tub was such a winner. Lovely space, very clean and comfortable. It has everything you need for a getaway.
Wonderful stay that I would recommend to anyone.
The Traveling Tortoise Retreat is a beautiful place to experience tranquility. The unit was well appointed and the creative decor was a highlight. The view is breathtaking and the host was incredibly helpful and friendly.
Very nice stay, friendly people, everything you need there.
There is nothing negative I can say about this place. Our 2-night stay was so nice. We wished we could have stayed longer. Everything you need is available in the house. And a big thank you to Gerrie. Thank you very much for making our stay so comfortable for us. Thank you very much for your kindness and for always making sure we are ok. Hope you could count all the ostriches. Will definitely come again.
We had a wonderful rest. The Traveling Tortoise Retreat is exactly what they advertise. "Off the grid" outside the noise between the breathtaking mountains. Unit (Hinge Back) probably had the best view and was neatly furnished. We had a wonderful stay. Jeff stopped by often and made sure everything was perfect.
We had a great time! Jeff made a lot of extra effort to make our stay extra nice! Would recommend to anyone who needs some peace and quiet.
The most beautiful hobbit's house with amazing views! Host was very friendly and helpful. Lots of dirt roads to go for a walk and explore.
Our stay was absolutely wonderful.
It was peaceful and safe to walk in and enjoy nature. Would definitely recommend it. Lovely view.
Very peaceful and quiet.
Our second visit to the Travelling Tortoise Retreat and once again a fantastic stay. We love the venue with beautiful views, bird life and listening to nature. Great chatting to Jeff again and of course buying some of his books to take home.
Wonderful location, great views, and accommodation decorated with incredible attention to detail. One feels at home immediately.
Just what the doctor ordered. Good place to relax.
Great views in clean well equipped accommodation. Everything there that you need for lovely peaceful visits and peace of mind. For us it was the best value available. We will definitely go there again and again.
The stay was wonderful. Would highly recommend it. We were a family of 6 and the house is very well furnished and the environment is food for the soul. The hot tub was out of the book relaxing. The host is very friendly and goes out of his way to make the stay enjoyable. Will definitely visit there again.
It was absolutely fantastic.
Incredibly comfortable.
What a lovely place to stay! Everything you will need in a self-catering chalet. We really enjoyed the peaceful area and both swimming pools were well made use of in the heat. Thank you for being a great host.
Very nice stay. Had a nice view and rested well.
We had a nice stay yes.
Very peaceful, beautiful picture and very neat and clean. Friendly owner. Good amenities.
Amazing getaway with small children.
So nice in nature, nice view. Perfectly calm and head clearing.
It was an incredible experience. Jacuzzi was nice and the silence. come again
Amazing stay, nice and peaceful. Would definitely recommend driving with a bakkie/SUV instead of a standard car.
Peace and tranquility. No TV. No music. No cellphones. The best breakaway from it all! Thank you and staff for a squeaky clean and comfortable stay.
Very nice stay. Mosquitoes were a bit of a bother.
We had a very nice stay. Everything was up to standard.
Jeff is a wonderful host and made our stay incredibly relaxing. The kids had a wonderful time at a nicely solar heated pool and even enjoyed the hot tub after dinner. It's very calm and relaxing. One can feel a lot of heart that went into this place.
Unique hobbit home, expertly crafted with every comfort and convenience required for a comfortable self-catering stay set in picturesque natural surroundings.
I initially worried about the heat, but Mother Nature proved me wrong, and the real gem turned out to be the exceptional host, Jeff. He's not just a host; he's a perfect and humane gentleman who transformed my stay into a delightful adventure. My visit included an unforgettable tour to Meiringspoort Waterfall, thanks to Jeff's thoughtful planning. The room's facilities were top-notch, and Jeff's impressive library of literature in the Angulate left me spoiled for choice. I cherish the entire experience and would gladly relive it without a second thought!
For those looking to get away from technology, this is the place to do it. No cell phone signal, no Wi-Fi and no television is the recipe for switching off and relaxing. The peaceful Karoo atmosphere is addictive. The road to the premises is not the best, but definitely adds to the farm feeling.
Just one word the best holiday.
It is a lovely, private and safe getaway where you can go for a walk in the beautiful scenery. The owner was nice and helpful. I would stay there again anytime.
If I could, I would rate it a thousand stars or even more. Thank you, Jeff, for having us. Thank you also for being a great host and an awesome person. We will definitely be back soon.
The peaceful Hare's Lair offered a beautiful view over the valley which was ablaze with vivid coloured wildflowers.
Would have liked to stay longer because of the location.
Describing this place as a little rustic log cabin in the mountains does not do it justice. It's compact, characterful, clean and well-appointed with magnificent views and a splendid hot tub to boot. Jeff the owner is the most gracious and attentive host, a competent author and a real character to boot. We spent only two nights but wished we'd booked a week. We'll be back.
You won't regret it, that's for sure.
The reception was friendly and the stay very nice.
Great venue, great atmosphere, great host. Loved the "Hobbit House" which took me to JRR Tolkien's middle earth, so creative!
A beautiful, quiet, and relaxing venue with a lovely playground for the kids. The chalets are clean and tidy with ample space and as Jeff promises, no loadshedding. A perfect place to unwind for the whole family. Thank you, Jeff, for your hospitality!
Jeff has created beautiful, eco-friendly living spaces in the heart of the karoo. We stayed in the Hare's Lair and were delighted with the round front door, the curved bamboo-covered ceiling and the creatively imagined living space. Everything you may want or need is there and every home comfort has been provided for. There is a lovely fireplace, and Jeff supplied plenty of wood. We were without power a few times, because of the constant cloud cover, but it was no worse than load shedding. Please be aware: this farm is off-grid and there's virtually no cell phone signal, and no TV (thank goodness), so read a book, play some games, take a walk and chill in the old-fashioned way. This is the perfect place for that.
There is a lot that The Traveling Tortoise has to offer that we didn't have time for. The children's play area, swimming area and private hot tub looked absolutely lovely and we were very sorry we couldn't explore it. Our little house sleeps 7 and was well equipped, neat, clean, spacious living room, bathrooms and everything you need in the kitchen - and a delicious bottle of wine from Jeff. Thank you very, very much! We got there very late and Jeff was very helpful and helped us settle in well. Note: One certainly cannot get home with a normal vehicle and the catchment is very limited. Perfect for a relaxed, off-the-grid visit. We will definitely go back. The stairs in the house, I would say, are a risk with babies.
The house was lovely with an amazing view.
The Jackal's Den is so beautiful and private. Wonderful view. The fireplace is a winner. Jeff received us kindly. Everything was clean and tidy. It is better than the pictures look.
Ensures one of the better facilities we have visited. Will definitely go there again. Very impressed with the playground/facilities for smaller children! The owner is very helpful and the chalet was absolutely neat, clean and very well equipped! Want to say 5 star!
I would recommend The Travelling Tortoise to anyone who is looking for something out of the ordinary and just needs to kick back and relax away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The host is very helpful and friendly, so do not give The Travelling Tortoise a miss if you're looking for something different in accommodation in this area, be it overnight or for a few days.
The peace and quiet was blissful. Jeff was a very friendly and helpful host.
It was very neat and very peaceful, friendly reception, we had a great time and will definitely stay there again.
Absolutely fantastic. Everything very clean and tidy. Homely atmosphere and comfortable. Nice fridge and lots of space. Nothing to criticize.
The place to have a rest and what a view. You can read, swim, hike and cycle or just sit on the verandah and enjoy the view and peacefulness.
Comfortable spacious chalet with beautiful antique furniture. Very homely atmosphere with ample reading material. Not dependent on ESKOM. The pool was a lifesaver during the heat wave. Jeff is a very pleasant and knowledgeable host.
Children enjoyed it. That hot tub was just what was needed. All the necessary amenities were available and Jeff was a great host. Great break away from everything.
Just suggest a better barbecue area and the hot tub was not available - no water and out of order. Big disappointment. Therefore a 4 for value for money.
We had such a peaceful stay, a nice cuddly hobbit house.
We had a wonderful break away. It was cold and rainy but we slept warm and comfortable. The hot tub was super nice even in the cold winter weather. Most definitely recommended.
Stayed in the Hare's Lair that sleeps two. The design is so different and so interesting. All the amenities are great. We greatly appreciated the wood provided for the inside fireplace! The bookshelf is filled with books to read and I can recommend the novels written by the owner (also an author, Jeff).
The house is very well equipped and the fireplace is a big plus.
We had a really nice stay and the children were away more than at home. Thank you very much for friendly service and everything we needed was there. The "hot tub" was a great treat and rounded off the day on a relaxing note.
The view was very beautiful. The accommodation was clean and livable. The owner was friendly but had no sense of humor.
The most beautiful view and stars. Very cute 'hobbit' cottage with everything you need. The owner made a lot of effort with us and we will go back for sure.
We love mountain views and the Karoo atmosphere. This is exactly what The Traveling Tortoise offers you and then in nice clean accommodation with everything you need. There is not even load shedding, because solar energy provides the power that is needed.
Perfect Getaway for Body mind and Sole, It's just beautiful! Miss the place already, felt like Home, just better! Thank you Jeff for a great stay!
Jeff, the owners are very friendly, and the place is very clean and nobody bothers each other.
We were very kindly received with a surprise of a bottle of wine and ice cream. It was a very pleasant person to talk to. We would go back again anytime.
Great place to break away to escape the busy life.
Beautiful surroundings. The owner is very nice and involved. The cottage is well furnished.
Nice quiet and peaceful.
Came and spent a night specifically to test drive the woodfired hot tub. Wife and I both loved it. Great place. Quiet. Lovely to sit in the simmering water and watch the stars. Will happily return and recommend.
We stayed 2 nights in chalet at Travelling Tortoise. Loved our stay. Quiet at night with wide open views. The new addition of a private wood fired hot tub was one of our highlights. The other chalets had guests, but you do not see or hear anyone. Jeff was always around yet not in your face. We will be back and certainly recommend the Travelling Tortoise.
Fantastic accommodation - my 2nd time here and I will be back again and again! There is no better value for money than this! Highly recommended!
Beautiful houses. We rented the Hobbit House and the large 3 bedroom house with a hot tub! Very well furnished. Hobbit House had a stove with free wood. Easy to reach when you follw the instruction of the owner. Nice hospitable owner.
Jeff was a great host. Lovely to hear his story and was very accommodating. We loved the views and spent time lots of time in the hot tub. The cottage was homely and equipped with everything you need.
The Hare's Lair at the Travelling Tortoise was exactly as advertised and expected. Cosy on a cold winter's night with many unique features not found in "normal" self-catering chalets. To find out more, I recommend that you make a reservation!
Everything was great. The view was particularly beautiful, would recommend it to anyone looking for silence and beautiful nature.
The best was the last night, asked Jeff if we could use the hot tub and it was great, outside it was 4 degrees C and we sat in a hot tub with mice on it, so nice.
Great venue, service and value for money. The owner is an author of short stories and the developer of the property. Well done Jeff!
Myself, my husband and son of 8 visited in April. Had the best time. Nothing but peace and quiet. Just nature. What a spectacular view. The unit was very cosy. The unit has everything you need. Beautiful view from the bedroom as well. The wood-fired tub was a great added bonus. Thank you Jeff for making us feel so welcome! We will hopefully be back soon.
Being able to braai on the deck and view the Karoo stars at night. Visiting De Rust is a must.
We only stayed one night but one should visit longer. 4x4 maybe necessary if staying in Jackal Hut.
Such a piece of heaven just outside De Rust. Jeff was helpful and friendly. He made us feel very welcome. Accommodation was excellent with beautiful views of the mountains and a veranda to enjoy the sunset. House was well furnished and well maintained. The highlight was the private hot tub along the cottage as well as the heated swimming pool. There is a cute play park for the children and nice farm roads to go for a walk. We will always speak highly of The Traveling Tortoise.
Beautiful cottage with a beautiful view and sunset - everything 100% - will visit again. Thank you Jeff.
Beautiful views, a pleasant hut with all the things you need and not more. Good service from the host. I wish I stayed longer.
Definitely will return again.
When the mountains and the stars meet and they allow you into their space to show off their beauty. The swimming pool was a treat to cool you from the summer heat. An all-round holistic experience.
It is very quiet. Best part is getting up and having breakfast on the outside deck and seeing the beautiful outdoors.
Jeff, the owner, managed to carry the theme throughout, without sacrificing comfort. The farm is very tidy and the view unbeatable! Highly recommended!
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very friendly host, Jeff. The cabin was clean, neat and everything was easy to find. Once you walk out onto the patio the view will take your breath away. Get ready to fall in love with a colorful sunset. Young or old, you will feel rejuvenated after a few days here, especially after a soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi.
We stayed two nights. It's very peaceful, quiet and comfortable with a beautiful view. Close to De Rust and main routes.
The Traveling Tortoise Retreat is the ideal place if you want peace and quiet. Beautiful views.
It would be great if the network issue was resolved. Other than that, it is a lovely place for holiday. Thank you.
Lovely, relaxing stay with beautiful view. Jeff is a great host. Wonderful play area for children.
Beautifully peaceful and safe and in nature.
See stars.
One can never get enough of the view from the balcony, and practically every room. It remains breathtaking. The lovely solar heated swimming pool, with the same view as from the chalet, was a real unexpected bonus. We were also privileged to buy books written by Jeff Glazier (the owner) which he signed for us - nice surprise to meet the author. We would stay at Traveling Tortoise again anytime, which is also very centrally located to Meiringspoort, Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert and everything in and around Oudtshoorn. Nine out of 10 for this holiday spot. Thank you, it was great.
In the early morning you will see wild rabbits. And the 2 swimming pools ready for relaxation and enough for children to keep themselves busy too. There is nothing that can obstruct the view of the houses. And De Rust town is not too far.
De Rust and surroundings are a beautiful tourism destination.
Jeff is friendly and accommodating and the accommodation is clean and the surroundings peaceful. Great weekend visit!
Will have to look for air conditioners. Slept very badly because of too hot at night.
It is away from the noise of city traffic. The host is very friendly and helpful.
Jeff was extremely helpful. We ended up staying a second night and enjoyed it thoroughly.
It also gives you a taste for off the grid living. You have an amazing view and if you're feeling hot there is a pool you can swim in. Jeff, the owner was also very helpful.
Very kind and helpful host.
We like the peace, quiet, swimming pool, hiking trail. Friendly host.
Friendly hosts.
’n 4x4 is ’n wenner by Jackal's Den.
Lovely stay in our bunny house. Very cute place, the dirt road was a bit rough with our motorbikes, but we were informed about it ahead of time. Very cute, comfortable, neat little place.
Perfect place to enjoy a holiday with a loved one or family. You can take walk around the grounds or swim in one of the few pools. The cottages are well equipped with everything you need, a perfect getaway from the city life. The owners a sweet and accommodating.
It was nice to arrive at this accommodation after a challenging drive through the Karoo. We were pleasantly surprised by the attention given to elements to entertain the younger generation and will definitely take our grandchildren there. The unit, Hares Lair, was very neat and well equipped.
Host Jeff is an amazing guy. Location and surrounding settings is the best place ever if you want a peaceful weekend in nature far away from the busy lifestyle like mine in Cape Town. Clean Cabin, very earthly and authentically designed.
The place is very isolated from the towns. We really enjoyed being able to use the pool and hot tub with the beautiful views. Our accommodation was also very nice and tidy.
The houses all have a theme with a story, all around rabbit and turtle and fox, which makes it very interesting. It's also excellently equipped. Everything runs on solar power and gas, so they are "off-grid" in terms of electricity use. The facilities are excellent. There are 2 swimming pools, one even solar heated. There is also a lovely play park for children. It's a fantastic place to enjoy peace and quiet. We would definitely go again and wholeheartedly recommend it.
Nice and quiet with a great view. Amazing experience with a wood fired hot tub. Would definitely recommend!
Lots of Karoo succulents, awesome sunsets.
See stars.
Very good, will stay there again.
We cannot wait to go back. It was an amazing time. It is clean and neat. Views for days. The host was so nice with the children and helped with anything we needed. Value for money everyday.
My husband and I had a marvellous time at the Travelling Tortoise. We loved the wooden houses, the details and the uniqueness of the place (each house is different). The fact that the resort is eco -friendly made it even more enjoyable. The views of the farm lands and the mountains are exquisite (especially from the jacuzzi). At night the stars show off in abundance! The peace and quiet was much needed and it is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or a child friendly holiday or even a stay with friends! Thank you to Jeff for being a wonderful host, we will certainly be back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Hare's Lair. In contrast to the bunny-hole-in-the-ground concept, the unit is an absolute fairytale at night, with the chimney keeping the cold at bay and ensuring a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. We have found our favourite place! The road was great, we drove with a small Kia Picanto and had no issues at all!
We stayed in one of Jeff's (owner) earthy log cabins where we also had access to a fire bath. A lot of effort has been put into the layout of the houses and the creative touch is immediately noticeable. We will definitely return again and stay even longer this time. Congratulations to Jeff on a beautiful place.
Our host, Jeff, was on hand and quickly sorted out a potential problem. He is a very interesting person and pleasant (feel free to buy one of his books) The kol-kol hot tub was a lovely warm experience in the cold. The surroundings are beautiful and all you hear are the birds. Eco-friendly.
What a lovely setup. Jeff let us feel very welcome and went the extra mile for us. The Jackals Den is definitely the place to stay. Warm and welcoming, and the best views from there.
Very nice stay. The dust was a big treat.
Just take braai wood with you, there is fire wood for heaters in houses. John is very helpful and friendly. Nice view and house, very neat and clean.
What a wonderful experience it was for us as a couple.' A small break that makes a big difference. We appreciated the neat and clean chalet with the most beautiful view of the mountains and valleys. Jeff is a fantastic host! We relaxed in the hot tub and forgot about all our stress. We will definitely visit again!
Lovely stay, very neat and clean. Swimming facilities are great! Perfect place to get away from busy city life!
Friendly, good advise on local to do's, enjoyed the time to relax and unwind, splendid jacuzzi under the stars!
Clean, well equipped, convenient communication with caretaker/owner. Will definitely recommend him and will stay there again myself.
The pool was the highlight.
Traveling Tortoise is well located near De Rust, but far enough to feel as if you are really enjoying a break. We were in the Geometric and we enjoyed peaceful sunsets in the hot tub. The pool is also lovely and much appreciated in December. The cabin is simple but has everything you need and feels so special.
In a farming area, could hear the sheep across in the valley. Was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Our stay was an absolute bliss. We have thoroughly enjoyed the quietness, the safety, walks, fresh air and a very friendly host willing to assist any time.
Neat, creative place with friendly reception.
Beautiful surroundings and location. The service was good and the cottages have everything you need. It's all gas and solar.
Just follow Jeff's directions and it is easy to find. Everything was prepared with care.
We stayed in The Hare's Lair. Hobbit house so tall people have to stoop when entering and exiting. The house is very tidy with all necessities provided. Outdoor grill and small fireplace inside that warms the house quickly. The owner Jeff welcomed us and guided us through the house. Very friendly and helpful.
Location for us is a little far out to go back and enjoy anytime soon, but it was a stop over for us and we would have loved an extra day or two to enjoy it there. We will go back the next time we do a road trip that way again for sure.
Wonderful place to be one with nature, and just rest.
Everything you need, very cuddly!
We had such fun at the Travelling Tortoise on our honeymoon! This place is a must for those who like spending time in nature in a relaxed, off-the-grid setting. The Travelling Tortoise offers many different and unique experiences that are a must on any trip. We had so much fun in the hot tub and exploring the farm in the morning. We will be back for more.
The pool and hot tub was amazing.
Lovely place, close to De Rust town. Jungle Gym for the children and beautiful swimming pools. And the hot tub was a real treat! Added to our list of favourites.
The owner himself is involved and receives every guest. He goes out of his way to accommodate everyone.
This place is ideal if you want to get away from the city and just enjoy nature. The sunset and stars are something you can enjoy while relaxing peacefully in a Jacuzzi.
Nice place to rest.
We love everything about the space.
The Traveling Tortoise is definitely the ideal family getaway. Great location for mountain bikers. We enjoyed the accommodation and nature very much.
Ideal if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, quiet and peaceful in a rural environment.
Nice private, very quiet, nice view.
See stars.
Host turned us away in the road and not allowed on site with our Tiguan, because it was not a "4x4". Our vehicle is an "all wheel drive" and we traveled through the Baviaanskloof to get there. Only option offered is that we, two senior citizens have to climb the mountain with our luggage. No other option was offered. We were told to go into town and look for accommodation. He canceled our accommodation. How do you manage a 4x4 terrain and don't have a 4x4 vehicle?
Breathtaking views and thoughtfully laid out wooden cabins that makes for an unforgettable experience.
It's a lovely wooden house in a peaceful area where you can relax and have a good time with friendly people.
Views are breathtaking of the stars at night in the Jacuzzi, the quietness away from city life was perfect
We cruised into the traveling tortoise to escape the rate race. The hot jacuzzi really got us out of our shells, while the stunning views and rustic accommodation really tipped the scales in favour of this one of a kind Karoo gem. I'd say let the hare win the race because this tortoise found where he's staying.
Really enjoyed the quiet. The view from The Hare's Lair cottage is beautiful and the cabin itself a lovely experience. Very spacious with everything you need to enjoy you stay. Jeff Glazier, the owner, very pleasant and helpful.
We only stayed one night and it was very nice. Everything is still new, but the cushions probably still need to be laid. They were too loud to sleep on. Other than that, no complaints.
If you love nature and need a break from the hazel and dazel of your every day living, this is the place to go! The houses are neat and well equipped, just love the character and uniqueness of it. The hot tub is a must to sit there at night and watch the stars in the heart of the Karoo is an experience to treasure for life. Jeff is the perfect host and lets you feel so at home.
This is a cute little place for people who prefer something different from the usual places to stay. The "Jackal's Den" where we spent the night is like something out of a fairy's magic garden with the round door and sink shower. The road is steep and full of loose stones, but the view makes every meter uphill worth it.
Here you switch off, relax and rest. Will definitely go again.
It was our second stop on our honeymoon. We were welcomed with the most beautiful scenery with some wooden houses up the mountain. Jeff showed us around really nicely and explained how als works. Champagne (due to the honeymoon) was a nice gift to be able to enjoy in the hot tub while the sun set. Afterwards we were greeted with a sky full of stars, still in the hot tub. The place is well laid out with everything you need. You literally just bring your food and drinks. We will definitely come back again! Thank you very much.
The area is very quiet and is perfect if you just want to relax. All the facilities are on site and you have free access to everything.
Jeff, you have created a piece of heaven on earth. Thank you for the pleasant reception. The view was awesome and the sound of only the wind and birds was food for one's soul. Thank you also for filling outside spa bath. The traveller don't pay for a place to sleep, you pay for a piece of heaven on earth and rest for your soul. Thank you Jeff, you're a true gentleman and host.
We had a fantastic getaway weekend. Best view. If you need to get away from everything, this is the one for you. Very clean and a nice swimming pool. Lovely hot tub watching the sunsets. Thank you Jeff for you friendliness. We are definitely coming back and you are an amazing writer.
It was a lovely place to stay, very quiet and a very good place to relax and rest. Visiting there in February was maybe not such a good idea, because of temperatures around 40°, but we can not fault anything about our visit! Hospitality and service was excellent! Thank you Jeff!
Best value for money.
A great stay. Jeff a perfect host, checks you in and out, leaves you alone during your stay. The place is spotless and equipped with everything you need. We even experienced a Karoo thunderstorm and plenty of rain. The swimming pool is a little walk away which is great as you then have privacy in your unit. The gravel road is good and we did it with ease in a Opel bakkie. We will be back.
We couldn't have asked for better holidays. Definitely worth the money and drive from Wellington to The Traveling Tortoise Retreat. Will definitely use Jeff's services again. He was an excellent host!
Would recommend to anyone who just wants to get away for a bit. Friendly reception and immediately made to feel welcome. Have a great time and the stars are particularly beautiful. Will definitely stay there again.
Cozy place to stay with the most amazing views. Many different plant species. Just right for getting away and catching up.
Great setup in the mountain. We had the nicest evening with a braai. The host even offered us another house to accommodate us. The houses is very warm so I would suggest putting in a fan or something for the nights. Other than that everything has blown our minds! Great place and would go back there anytime.
Beautiful environment, nature and view. Very comfortable and very friendly welcome.
Thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the joy of a well appointed, very comfortable and thoroughly charming chalet. A very pleasant eco friendly get-away. Hot tub worked a treat. Highly recommended. The absence of TV, Wi-Fi, etc adds to the downtime experience. Food for the soul destination.
It was wonderfully rustic and cosy.
Beautiful views with pleasant accommodation. Loved the hot tub.
Wonderful and chilled place
Would like to go again as soon as possible.
A place where you can find yourself.
Beautiful place full of character. Stargazing is phenomenal and woodland atmosphere was very nice.
Very peaceful, house is well equipped. Jeff is a good host. The view was breathtaking and the hot tub is a winner.
My fiance travels very rushed. For him, the tranquillity was heavenly. He even read books, switched off, slept through the day and braai'd in the evening with natural sounds in the background. It was worth the getaway!
We loved the two nights spent at The Padloper Cabin. It is stylish and special.
Had a great stay in the Hinge Back house. Very neat and well equipped. The view and sunset are something to experience. Stargazing in the hot tub is also a must. Would recommend to anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Relaxed and refreshed.
Absolutely amazing! Worth every minute and cent.
Traveling Tortoise is a delightful getaway and the perfect place to recharge off the grid. We will definitely go again!
The welcome was friendly, the landscape cannot justify any artist on canvas. Thanks to Jeff, we will come again. Highly recommended.
The Traveling Tortoise is one of the best ever. It's so calm and relaxing.
House was very neat with what you needed. We received a lot of hospitality. The place for just being quiet and I wish we could spend more time on that veranda with the amazing view but the weather didn't want to play along. Will definitely come again.
Jeff's place is very clean and neat and his communication is good. We didn't have any problems to find the place. Would definitely recommend.
The Angulate is a lovely cottage with a beautiful view - very spacious, clean and tidy. The hot bath is a wonderful experience! The view is lovely and when it gets dark, the most beautiful stars. We had a wonderful stay. Wish we could visit longer.
Absoluut die geld werd. Pragtige omgewing en natuurskoon. Eienaar baie gasvry en behulpsaam.
Beautiful eco-friendly farm. The owner, Jeff came to welcome us himself and was very helpful throughout. Beautiful houses with a lovely view. Can definitely recommend it.
This is hands down the best place I have had the pleasure of staying at. The quiet and serenity is blissful, and the views were stunning. It is the perfect break-away to recharge the soul. The cabin was rustic and cosy. This will definitely become a annual get-away place for us. Absolutely loved it!
Neat accommodation in a very beautiful and peaceful area.
Pleasantly surprised even after reading many reviews before we arrived. Beautiful example of getting by without Eskom. Jeff knows his story and we wish him all the best.
Wow, will definitely visit again.
Nice place to charge your batteries - everything very "earthy" but very comfortable. The quiet is what we enjoyed - a fair distance from main road but very good value for money. Some cottages can only be reached with a 4x4 and we had to move due to the fact that we could not get to the booked accommodation - customers please make aware of the fact! Received very hospitably.
Highly recommended to all looking for a getaway. The chalet was outstandingly equipped and everything was clean and neat. The warm bath underneath the stars was a winner.
Friendly service, peaceful atmosphere, it was just amazing. Can't wait to visit again.
A beautiful place with excellent views, much to see.
Awesome stay, Jeff has done a great job to create the perfect getaway from the crazy city life.
Accommodation was exactly what we were looking for - back to basics. We were alone in the small unit on the hill - only accessible by 4x4. No TV, no internet, beautiful scenery. Silence. Clean air. This is for people who really want to get away from everyone and still be close enough to a small town (De Rust) for any food, restaurant or other necessities. Will definitely want to go here again.
What a great find this was! Our host Jeff was helpful and friendly and the units were comfortable and well equipped with beautiful views. We all loved the hot tub and the hike up into the hills. Great value for money and we really appreciated the efforts made to be eco-friendly without taking away our comforts. Set far enough away from towns to be quiet and peaceful, yet close enough to towns for stores and site seeing to be convenient.
Jeff is truly a character with vision and his Traveling Tortoise Retreat is truly super cute!
The accommodations are very unique in the sense that Jeff built everything himself. Not the place for you if you are looking for a lot of luxury. It's the perfect place to just get away from everyday life and catch up on your sleep. Our biggest criticism is that there was full cell phone signal.
We had a great time. It is very quiet and the view is something special, especially if you walk out on the balcony in the morning and you hear all the birds' sounds. It's heavenly. The swimming pool and Jaccuzi are a great way to relax in the heat. Would definitely recommend Traveling Tortoise.
Shower could easily be upgraded and water pressure definitely a problem.
Nice setting a serene. Jeff was really amenable and readily available for any assistance. Road a little rugged but I coped in a sedan. If you just need to unwind this is the place to do it.
It is secluded, quiet, well equipped, clean and tidy. The owner is very helpful. The wood fired hot tub was a winner. We could talk as a family, because cell phones had to stay out of the bath. The only challenge is the road to get there - smaller sedans may struggle.
Got there late afternoon and owner forgot we were coming. Room was not ready and we had to wait in the car for him to fix it. Room was not clean. Glasses full of cobwebs. Second bedroom beds were full of sand and grass. Jacuzzi was never filled with water. Braai was not clean. Would not recommend it to my friends.
If you are looking for a peaceful break away and fresh air, then this is the place to go. Awesome little break away!
Everything was 100%. Beautiful view.
Lovely accommodation. Everything very clean and neat. Stunning view and very peaceful.
Lovely place with the most beautiful view.
Alles was perfek. Uitsigte, netheid, ligging, diens, privaatheid en rustigheid. My Golden Retriever was ook welkom.
We had a great stay in the cottage. The views were amazing and it was very peaceful. The cottage itself is very comfortable and well equipped. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the property. We will be back.
The accommodation is unique and neat, with lots of character and a peaceful location. The host, Jeff, goes to great lengths and provides excellent personal service.
Here you find rest from your soul and you recover.
What a absolutely magical place. We were so surprised at the quality of the accommodation, the facilities and all the comforts provided. The owners have thought of everything and I would highly recommend this place if you wanting to get away from the bright lights and sit back and relax.
Jeff was a good host and although I would not like to drive there without a bakkie or 4x4, the location was fantastic and the scenery was indescribably beautiful! The cottages are well-equipped and the bedding is tidy and clean.
It was really a very nice place to stay. The views are breathtaking and the wooden houses are very well equipped. We really enjoyed our stay. Can really recommend it.
We are guesthouse veterans and this one makes our Top Five. The cottage is on top of a stony site and one can see far and what you see is delightful. The nights are quiet and dark, except for a top-notch stargazing experience. The cottage itself deserves a place in a film. Every board and beam is positioned and attached with obvious love for the place. Plus, Jeff is the perfect host - helpful, patient, and concerned without being intrusive. He remained patient even under the worst provocation when I misremembered my booking dates. He didn't blame us for a second. You have a great place and we can't wait to tell our friends.
Just what you need! Beautiful chalets with stunning bathrooms. Well equipped chalet.
The accommodation is absolutely value for money. The accommodation is comfortable, clean and tidy, everything works, everything needed is there. The silence is deafening and the beautiful sunsets ended each day on a high. Will stay there again for sure. Our 3 days were way too short. Jeff, we'll see you again!
Very nice stay! Would recommend anytime.
Accommodation very neat, comfortable and everything you require is at hand. Beautiful views, really a place to just breathe!
Wow! What a beautiful retreat. With the warmest welcome by a fantastic author and writer Jeff and his lady friend. You made every second at your place unforgettable. In the warm days there was the dark blue waters of the sparkling swimming pool. With the most amazing views... thank you very much for these unforgettable days.
Place very comfortable, clean and neat. Ideal for a peaceful getaway between nothing and nowhere. Highly recommended.
Blissful. Loved the Padlooper Cabin.
We really got what we went for, rest! The owner goes out of his way to meet all your needs. Spacious log cabin, fully equipped. We went in the hottest time, but the pool was a pleasure. We didn't want "gimmicks" like TV etc. haven't, but still been convenient, that's all there is. View at night with the most beautiful sunsets, conveniently close to the "back roads" we wanted to drive as well as the little gems you find in the countryside. A gem that can be visited. Highly recommended.
Jeff and the Traveling Tortoise retreat is a hidden, off-the-beaten-track spot, with every imaginable amenity (including no cell phone reception, delicious!). All the facilities are neat and give a comfortable and special feeling. Jeff is a friendly and hospitable person with clearly a heart of gold to set up and manage such a diamond in these open spaces. 5/5 for self-catering accommodation.
Although about 14 km outside De Rust with about 12 km of dirt road to get there, the road was in good condition. The last 2 to 3 km was a typical farm road, but still good. The cottages are situated on a ledge with a stony ramp leading to it. The houses are built on stilts at a slope. Access to the cottages is with a steep climb which can make carrying necessities for older people difficult, but is not insurmountable. A swimming pool is available on site. The cottages are well equipped with everything you need - electricity, gas stove, fridge, cold and hot water and lots of books to read. Braai facilities are available on the balcony overlooking the valley. We were received very kindly by the owner, Jeff. He went out of his way to be helpful to us, as elderly people. I would definitely recommend the accommodation.
Padloper hut met all our expectations. From throw bag curtains, a soft cotton duvet, enough light, old-fashioned cutlery to a small fireplace that burns abundantly. A getaway to privacy and truly beautiful.
We stayed in Die Padloper. Perfect for a couple. Very private and safe. And the sunsets are amazing.
See stars.
My wife and I really enjoyed staying at the Traveling Tortoise. It was so nice to be in the middle of nowhere and just experience the calmness of the Karoo. Oudtshoorn is around the corner so there is plenty to do in the surrounding areas. The chalets/houses were well equipped and you had everything you needed. Would definitely recommend it.
See the stars.
What a lovely spot! We just used this as an overnight stop, but would love to have been able to stay longer and explore some more. My only improvement would be better signage on the way in. The directions we were given were adequate, but the route is quite twisty, and a few extra signs along the way would make it easier to find.
Far enough from the hustle and bustle but close enough to quickly go to the shop. Nice clean pool to cool off in and chalets fitted with everything you need. Chalets are comfortable with a beautiful view over the valley. This is off the grid and one should go with the intention to break away from it all. There are camping facilities for the rough-it campers.
We had a good time at the place, which sadly was cut short due to a conspiracy by the "water tank fairies"! Our first night's experience left us speechless for the beautiful vista, while we listened to some CD's and watched the sun set in the West. The absolute quietness was something overwhelmingly pleasant! Some of the local inhabitants introduced themselves to us the next night. I'm not sure whether it was because of good manners, or perhaps they also love Glenn Miller and his Big Band and needed to hear more from closer? Anyway - at first we noticed a beautiful blueish (what looked like a) Kestrel, waiting patiently on top of a fence post, on the look-out for supper. He/she sat there motionless for at least 45 minutes, looking in all directions. Then we noticed a nosy springhaas (jack rabbit?), merrily hopping towards us from the pool area. It disappeared for a while, but soon we again noticed it right in front of the next door chalet. Behind the pool and the road, there is a clearing, and this is where we saw a small buck. By this time it was fast becoming dark, so that we could only make out a few distinguishing marks. It looked brownish and had a short, white very busy little tail. It also came up the road towards us and disappeared into the bush besides the road in the area where the Kestrel was still waiting for supper. Then there also was was a mongoose running over the road. The sunsets were spectacular. Criticism? The chalets are situated on an incline which is difficult to negotiate if you are in you 70's. (In other words, we do not have anything to criticize!)
Dankie Jeff.
What a pleasant stay in the most beautiful log house with the most delightful deck. View of picture-perfect mountains and with dead silence except for birds singing you get rest for your soul. We stayed for 4 days and thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely come back again. It looks just like the photos advertised on LekkeSlaap. Definitely better value for money even though it is 24 km from Oudtshoorn, we drove through Oudtshoorn every day to get to everything and really enjoyed it.
Was very peaceful and we had a great time without any TV distracting us. Just relax and read my book. Nice braai on the patio in the evening.
I found it very private, peaceful and very clean environment with clean fresh air.
Sit down, relax en see the wonderful sunset.
I enjoyed my stay in the cabin on the hill. The quiet surrounds and solitude of the setting provides a retreat for those of us who enjoy getting away from our television sets and frenetic city lives. The wood burner helped considerably to keep warm on the cold Winter nights . This is simplicity that works but is not for those who want every modern appliance that city dwellers are accustomed to.
It felt as if one were stepping back in time. The log cabin is so simple yet has all that you need. Our peace came from the simplicity of this accommodation. Rough hewn Poplar beams, an old rifle on the wall, and a cast iron fireplace created an atmosphere of yesteryear. Snowcapped mountains and miles of space created spectacular views. At night a vista of stars was revealed. Thank you Jeff for your hospitality, we will definitely return.
Thank you Jeff for creating such a beautiful place where one can find yourself. We will visit you again. Thank you also for your kindness. You have created something that speaks to one's soul.
Host (Jeff) is excellent. Route can be challenging. Understand that Jeff's directions (drawings of tortoises) are stolen for souvenirs. Enjoyed the stay very much. Recommended!
Absolute piece of heaven, beautiful scenery, stunning sunrise, breathtaking sunset, never seen so many stars in the sky before. It's so quiet, just you and nature. Beautiful wooden house.
The best accommodation in nature that we have ever experienced with hospitality.
Wow, what an incredibly beautiful place (despite the poor road directions in the evening, the owner fetched us, lovely of him) there is absolutely nothing to complain about. This is a place you don't want to close with curtains, you just lie and stare at the stars. Then there is a swimming pool between somewhere and nowhere - so beautiful. Would like to stay longer next time. Just ensure you take enough food and provisions with, because you shouldn't get in your car to go shop every day, no, you should stay and enjoy the surroundings. The house is exceptional and very neat. Thank you.
We really enjoyed our stay. Cottages are beautiful. Nice environment. Very calm. Pool was clean and lovely bonus. Children enjoyed books in the cottage. Thank you very much.
Calm atmosphere. Value for money.
Really enjoyed, beautiful place in natural beauty.
Apart from the fact that instructions on how to get there were absolutely useless, the experience was great and we will definitely go back again. We loved Jeff's library of books - a very wide variety. We also bought two of his own novels.
The wooden houses are perfect for a break from the city's hustle and bustle. It's perfectly located, not too far from town, but far enough to sit in dead silence and look at the stars. Except for the chirping of the cupboards in the distance. The view from the balcony is breathtakingly beautiful and the wooden house is perfectly furnished. Very satisfied!
Well received by Jeff. Neat and tidy. Lovely views. Wonderful silence away from it all!
Not for people who are looking for a traditional camp, but for those who go to appreciate nature without leaving a footprint. Keep in mind that it is an eco-resort, so if there are luxuries that you need you have to take it with you. Owner is very helpful and very friendly and helps you to enjoy the best of the environment.
Carina and I have found paradise! What a fantastic place, the facilities, the views and the tranquillity! This is, in our view, the best accommodation we have made use of in our travels around the country. It was great sitting on the deck, enjoying a glass of wine, the fire going for the braai and watching the sun setting. Listening to the birds and watching the colours change as the sun went down was special. Carina and I will be back and for a longer stay! Jeff, it was great meeting you and thanks for the two books - I should have asked you to autograph them!
A lovely wooden house full of books and with a homely atmosphere. The only negative criticism is that carrying up luggage is a bit difficult because it is slightly steep. Older people may struggle. But the stars are incredibly bright and the ostriches make music all night and it's just nice. Friendly service. The environment is also very beautiful.
Was a lovely time. It was peaceful, safe, full of nature and fresh air. Will definitely go again, just in the near future. Thank you so much Traveling Tortoise for sharing your piece of heaven with us.
Our stay consisted of one night on the way to the Baviaanskloof. The pitches are very nice and we would have struggled with anything more than our two man tent. Visitors with large vehicles and forest wagons grumble. The pitches are not very level and you have to make sure you sleep "uphill". The facility is brand new. So everything is still pretty clean and works well. Definitely a lot of potential as a base to explore the area.
We couldn't have asked for a better weekend away. Traveling Tortoise is by far one of the best places to stay. It's neat, fully furnished, quiet and has the most beautiful view. It's perfect for any person/persons who want to get away from a busy life in a city or town. Jeff made us feel very at home and welcome. We are already planning our next weekend away at Traveling Tortoise!
We were pleasantly surprised upon our arrival. We love the place and would definitely recommend it. The surroundings are picturesque and the house has the most beautiful view over the valley. Very nice stay.
Apart from the fact that everything is still very new and something was missing here and there, we really enjoyed the stay. The peace, quiet and beautiful surroundings (view) were outstanding. The owner is friendly and accommodating and made us feel right at home. The directions to get there were a problem, but we mentioned it and we believe it has since been fixed.
It was a lovely, peaceful place, neat and the people friendly. The road there is a bit difficult to reach as there are no GPS coordinates.
Quiet and relaxing time had by all. Will definitely visit again.
If you like silence and nature this is the place to be.
Definitely a must if you want to be part of an environmentally friendly environment. The owner, Jeff, really went out of his way to introduce the tourists/visitors to environmental friendliness. The clean and tidy chalet is well equipped with all the necessities. Truly a place where one can just relax and breathe in the surroundings. I will definitely visit Traveling Tortoise again and I will make sure that more people can have this experience.
Very clean and neat. Friendly, helpful service. Small stand and uneven.
Nice and quiet between the ostrich farms. No city noise. Take mosquito repellent with you in case a mosquito bothers you at night. The solar power works well. Jeff receives you very kindly of course. Found out he is also an author of quite a few books.
