52 guests' feedbackIt was the most amazing stay ever! The scenery and the pool were the best, also very quiet, no noise pollution! I think my fur babies enjoyed it even more than my partner and I.
Loved this little spot as a breakaway with my dog. The property is fenced in so she could roam freely. Very comfortable place with beautiful views. Loved every minute.
We were very comfortable and cozy. The place is securely fenced and our dog was with us. The forest cottage's unique character and view of the Botrivier upstream had us in raptures.
We only stayed for one night, but the host was very kind and accommodating. Judging by the photos it looks like the accommodation was battered by the floods a while back, but it has been wonderfully restored and improved. We will certainly be back for a longer visit soon.
Wonderfully relaxing in an exceptional place to stay.
Stayed in Oak cottage. Cottage is well equipped. Completely fenced. Dogs were very safe. Would definitely recommend.
Wonderful location in a rustic setting. A bit chilly in the winter months.
Oak Cottage is charming and full of character. I loved being surrounded by trees and the greenery on the roof of the cottage as well. We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay, a great place for a breather and escape from city life. I would definitely recommend it for people who need a quiet retreat and who want to feel like they are close to nature, but still have access to WiFi and other amenities. Our host communicated directions clearly and welcomed us, after which we were left to our own devices, which was perfect.
We had a great stay at the Underhill Farm. The cottage was clean and charming and had "sustainably made" written in every aspect of it. The kitchen was well equipped, the enclosed braai area was great when the wind picked up, and the boma next to the river was perfect for toasting marshmallows and hanging out. The splash pool was great, but the hot tub was pretty murky. My 3-year-old had a lot of fun exploring the riverbed and walking up to see the cows at a neighboring farm. There were a lot of flies - as can be expected in South Africa's warm months. I'd recommend taking citronella candles or some other kind of bug repellant along.
Excellent accommodation and decor suiting the hobbit theme. Really quaint and quiet, the surrounding farm was beautiful and the plunge pool was absolutely refreshing! And the only complaint is that we forgot to buy more of the complimentary cider given to us, which is produced on the farm that was lovely!
Very relaxing, great spot to get away from it all.
Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer! From the moment we secured the booking, the owner was incredibly welcoming and went out of their way to provide us with helpful information that made our stay even more enjoyable. The accommodation was beautiful and comfortable. We highly recommend this place and will definitely stay longer next time.
It was very rustic, had a great time. A bit cold in winter, so water wasnt very hot.
Unique style and beautiful area but overpriced. Made fire in the hot tub wood burner but the water stayed cold so could not use it.
The cottage is nice and cool, situated under beautiful, large trees, and the birdlife is stunning. However, please take note of the following points: 1. The cottage needs some serious TLC and a thorough cleaning. 2. Although it is fenced, your dogs may still be able to get out. Additionally, the host's three dogs, which roam freely (two of which are large breeds), may enter the property, walk on your roof, and bark at your dogs. 3. The only 'hiking' route available is along the riverbank, which suffered serious flood damage more than a year ago. As a result, there is a lot of debris, such as rusted metal, broken glass, barbed wire, etc. Please take care when walking with your dogs and children; my dog cut his paws very badly. 4. It is definitely not private, as stated on their website. The riverbed is the only real place to walk, and we often saw people in front of our hot tub and swimming pool. If you stay at Oak Cottage, the bathroom shutters open directly onto this 'hiking trail.' The host compared it to a public beach, where privacy is also lacking. Will we return? Probably not.
Perfect for our dog to explore as the unit is fenced off. Everything you needed. Helpful and friendly hosts.
Underhill had tremendous storm damage. Despite that, a lot of effort was made to accommodate us. It is understandable that the place was therefore not exactly according to the photos. However, it is still playful and cute, which compliments the beautiful nature. The bedding is clean and of high quality. Our stay at Underhill coincided with the rugby world cup final. To accommodate everyone, our host, Julian, invited all the guests to watch the final broadcast together, so that the internet 'streaming' does not let anyone down.
Cold plunges in the morning and 2 fireplaces inside the cottage for the winter nights. Good for the soul.
It was unique beyond my expectation.
We arrived at Underhill on the farm and were dumbfounded by the nicely hidden cottage. It kind of reminded us of Harry Potter. The accommodation is next to a running water stream with an outdoor shower and swimming pool. There was also no load shedding. In one word; magical!
A Hansie and Gretel cottage with luxurious amenities from a spacious hot shower, to soft bed and bedding, sufficient crockery and cutlery. The location on the stream bed against the poplar forest enchants. We come back for the Jacuzzi and private lapa in the poplar forest. This time, the crackling dust turned a cold winter weekend into a family fairy tale with many more chapters. Remember braai wood, the fireplace wood is good for braai.
Experience like few!
The farm is in a beautiful location. I booked a 3-night stay. The host, Julian, called ahead to advise that there was a problem with the toilet in the unit that I had booked (with my 15-year-old dog) and as a result, I could stay in a slightly larger unit at no additional cost. I had no qualms with this as long as we would be warm and my dog could be accommodated. The directions received from the host were spot-on and it was easy to find the farm. Upon arrival, Julian briefly greeted us and pointed us in the direction of the cottage. The steps down to the cottage had not been swept in a long time but perhaps this is just the feel that it is supposed to have. The cottage is situated right on a bubbling stream - very pretty location - and has a fully fenced garden area to accommodate those traveling with dogs. At the front door of the cottage was an empty plastic 5-litre water bottle - not sure what it was doing there and there was no outside bin to dispose of it, so I just left it right there. The front stoep was secured with a ladder that had been turned on its side and a broom lying behind it. To the right of this was a lounger of some sort with an extremely dirty lounge cushion draped over the backrest. The garden had dog poo from I assume the previous inhabitant's pooch. The "splash pool" was 3/4 filled and did not look very inviting (but it was cold, so I had no intention of utilising it in any event). The cottage is quirky to say the least but comes with the ultimate luxury - a dishwasher! (It needed salt and rinse aid though - there was only powder available). It should be noted that the place is in dire need of a proper scrub-down. Almost everything I touched was grubby. So I washed most of the cutlery, some of the crockery and a few other things before using it, wiped down the counters and cleaned the outside of the fridge. There was only one wine glass in the cottage (which needed cleaning) - granted there were two additional plastic ones. The sponge scourer, pot scourer and steelwool had seen better days and are in need of replacement. The rubbish bin did not have a lid (but a clean black bag in it) and the rim was very dirty (I did not have the inclination to clean this). The toaster and microwave were not clean. The shower curtain was gross - very dirty and had not seen a wash in a long long time. The basin plug in the bathroom could do with a scrub as well as the shower floor. Almost all plugs in the cottage were covered in a thick layer of dust and/or grime. The one behind the headboard in the main bedroom had a bunch of loo paper stuffed into the back of it for some reason (the bed lamp on that side did not work). There were no real "amenities" in the cottage. An empty body wash as well as a shampoo squeezy bottle and the remnants of a used soap bar greeted me in the shower. I just threw this away. There was a fairly watered-down version of dispenser hand wash in the bathroom. The towels were white and they were clean. The kitchen had no tea/coffee etc. (it is not advertised as such either and I brought my own anyway). There was a bottle of Underhill cider in the fridge. I was not sure whether someone had left it behind or whether it was for me to sample. So I just ignored it and left it there upon my departure. There is no room guide or file or anything to tell you more about the area, the farm or the way in which to best utilise/enjoy the facility, etc. I suggest the host consider getting these in place. The wi-fi worked on my phone but not on my laptop. I thought that some downtime could do no harm so decided to live with the phone-only wifi status. We did not have to worry about loadshedding - we were blissfully unaware of any electricity outages and the gas geyser in the bathroom ensured that we had no shortage of hot water at all times. I brought along blankets and placed these on the couch in the lounge - both myself and my (elderly) dog slept on top of these so as to not damage or dirty the couch (which had a few stains anyhow). I can therefore not vouch for the bedding but it looked clean. The cottage has an old wood stove/fireplace with a crate of wood and kindling supplied. We used this as it warmed up the unit nicely. As there was no outside bin, we did dispose of the ash (only once it had cooled off completely) in the only bin available being the one in the kitchen area. Upon my departure, I dusted and cleaned as much as possible of the mud (it was rainy) and dog hair and any trace of me having visited. I also used that broom by the front door behind the ladder to sweep out the lounge area. So hopefully the host found a clean cottage upon my departure. Potentially slightly cleaner than I found upon my arrival. So, there are a few good and a few not-so-good things - I'd say with a proper clean it could be a very different experience. Attention to detail is required though, considering that one pays around R1,000 per night. I left a day early as my old dog had developed breathing problems and needed some veterinary care. Unfortunately, I left his custom-made collar (with his name embroidered on it) and his lead behind. I only realised this when I was about 200 km away already and contacted Julian to ask if he could please retrieve this and courier it to me (at my cost of course). I am yet to receive a response to my request.
Fantastic and special place to stay, like from a fairy tale. We had a great time relaxing and switching off. Beautiful scenery and hiking trails.
If you have watched The Lord of the Rings and ever wanted to experience the Hobbit village, this is exactly the feeling you will get. Like a fairy tale in real life.
Beautiful surroundings with exceptionally unique places to stay. Secure fenced yard for dogs. Eco-friendly. Will definitely want to return again in the future.
The venue is quite simply overpriced.
This little gem in the valley was absolutely beautiful and delightful. Will soon be back. Thank you Jules. You have created a magic space.
No issues other the stairs are quite uneven and should be navigated carefully. Quiet and peace full, will definitely go back and would love to check the other cabins.
Quaint, charming, old-world, eco-friendly, real country vibe, awesome hosts, comfortable - quite an experience!
Splash pool is awesome!
The farm is a place where you can have peace, quiet and privacy. Very laid back and you feel a bit like you're in hobbit territory. We loved our stay but a little bit of maintenance is needed in the bathroom area of the cottage we stayed in.
It's amazing to see everything is secondhand en ecological friendly and on top of that the owner makes his own cider!
The accommodation is very cute! Gives unique atmosphere and experience. Stayed by the river and it was so peaceful - perfect place to rest and recover and enjoy the farm life, in beautiful surroundings.
The home with its lovely patio has a good balance of rustic, comfort and quality. The master bedroom with its double exterior doors that open into the bush makes you feel as though you are sleeping in the bush! It is very central to a trip to the beautiful Elgin/Grabouw and Bot River areas, where we went to taste wine and eat. I can also imagine myself relaxing on the leather couches in front of the fireplace on winter evenings.
We needed a complete getaway and Underhill Farm gave us just that - a beautiful cottage in beautiful surroundings that allowed us to have lazy days and star-filled nights. The private plunge pool was such a treat, as was the outdoor shower. We can't wait to return!
Wow! Unique, stylish decor. Hear the rippling water and leaves rustling in the wind. Private. We will definitely visit again.
Great place to unwind and relax.
Unique experience of tranquility and silence. Perfect overnight accommodation. Clean and tidy.
We so enjoyed our stay, James made us feel right at home. The trees, the river the calmness. House we stayed in was beautifully decorated. Our dog so enjoyed it too. We will be back.
What a wonderful farm manager, James! He was a great help all weekend and welcomed us kindly and hospitably on the farm. Lovely weekend, quiet with beautiful scenery.
We really enjoyed our little getaway of 3 days out of town! Everything you need is there!
Very well equipped, neat and clean. Quiet and safe environment. Very friendly welcome.
UnderHill FarmHouse was so peaceful and the master bedroom overlooking the river was heavenly, we had such a great time relaxing and will definitely be visiting again. The children had fun swimming in the pond and feeding the horses. All I can complain about is the disappointment of the kids when we got there and the splash pool didn't have water in it. We always discuss where there is a swimming pool because the children love to swim, cold or hot they are always in a pool. And especially at the weekend it was very hot so we looked forward to cooling off in the splash pool. But other than that it was really, really fun.
Julian and James are fantastic! The farmhouse is luxurious, it's a place where your spirit can only be at peace. The place is safe, clean and I will definitely take my family again.
No cellphone reception but Wi-Fi. Will stay there again!
The last mile or so to the whereabouts the road is not suitable for cars running flat on the ground. The accommodation was excellent for people who are accustomed to camping or not luxury accommodation. It is clean, has a nice pool and is nice private. there is a hiking trail and the place is surrounded by beautiful trees.
Was awesome, will definitely visit again.
See stars.
Underhill Farm truly is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and the best part is you don't have to travel hours on end to get there! It literally took us less than 2 hours to escape to this little piece of heaven. If you have a family there is ample space for kids to play freely and have fun, without the worry of something happening to them.
The highlight for us was that there were no other people. We were surrounded by nature.
