We had such a nice stay again! Electric blanket for the freezing cold as well as a heater, made sure we slept snuggly warm. Fantastic lamb curry for dinner and we were in the clouds!

We really enjoyed staying here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. On the way there we were able to place our meal order, and when we got there our food was ready, which helped a lot after a long drive. The accommodation was very neat and clean. The fact that we could bring our little dog was a bonus. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and we were able to continue our journey.

I was under the impression that I booked a unit with 2 rooms, but we got a unit where all the beds were in one room. Unfortunately, there was no table to eat at or dish soap to wash the dishes with. The double bed had sand between the sheets.

A lovely friendly place off the N1 for a peaceful stopover. The place and pub has a lot of interesting history, making it unique to the general home B&B. Dinner and breakfast are extra costs. The food was good farm-style cooking.
We have stayed there before. The rooms are clean and comfortably furnished and the beds deliciously warm. We did not use any other amenities. I would like to suggest that the load shedding schedule be made available to the visitors. Just a note left in the rooms will suffice. Thank you very much. We had a wonderful stay and will use Van Zylsvlei again.

Pleasant experience. The campsite is also very neat, the ablutions definitely need to be upgraded. The dinner in their restaurant was fantastically delicious. So is the breakfast. Very glad we were there.
We had a great time. We wanted to barbecue, but due to the wind had to make our food inside. There were too few knives and forks, and I suggest a bigger trash can. But, otherwise, very nice stay!

It's also nice and quiet because you only had to turn off the main road a short distance to get to Van Zylsvlei B&B. Breakfast and dinner are offered. The dinner we attended was delicious!
The air conditioner and TV did not want to work, but the "beloved" load shedding contributed to this. Dinner and breakfast were great. I would like to recommend that you replace the oil lamps with Magnito Lithium lights or gas lamps, to improve fire safety. I and possibly many other guests are no longer used to paraffin lamps. Please attach photos of the bathroom. Your advertisement reads B&B indicating that the rate includes breakfast, which is not the case. In any case, your rate is good and very competitive. Check out the B&B. You are a great overnight accommodation and Van Zylsvlei Karoo Guest Farm is great.

When it's 42 degrees and the air conditioning doesn't work because load shedding, the other option is usually a nice shower. We could not shower: no water because there is no power. No hair dryer. No flashlights for load shedding, only a paraffin lamp. The 'lamb' with dinner was extremely tough. The marshmallow pudding was delicious. Invest please in solar panels or a generator.

We stayed here on our way up to JHB and again on our way home, July 2022. Really lovely, clean and comfortable accommodation, with air conditioning for the cold winter nights. Our three Border Collies were also welcomed. Warm fire to sit at and even during loadshedding, they made a plan. Nice and quiet, as you are away from the N1. Very safe too. they have a restaurant, which serves delicious meals and breakfasts. Annalie and Deon go out of their way for you. You arrive as a stranger, and leave as a friend. Highly recommended.

I often stop over at Colesberg on my journeys between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and after many other places to stay, Van Zylsvlei remains my favourite. It feels like I'm visiting family on the farm every time, and even if it's temporary staff on duty, they remain just as professional and friendly. The nicest are those big old dogs that just come to sleep on your feet!
The rooms are comfortable. The farm atmosphere calms you down so you can recharge for the next shift.

Inside the rondavel, nothing was "wow". It was not value for the money I had to pay. Mosquitoes eat you up and my bed was full of little spiders. Maybe fell from the thatched roof. Feel they should control insects if guests are to stay there. Shower was so hot, struggled to control temperature or I would burn myself.
We did not get the same unit as we booked. Was very disappointed.
Van Zyls B&B's reviews were too good to be true. One always checks a place's reviews before making a reservation. By mistake I booked 2 units due to poor internet. We were not given a choice which one we preferred. Paid R800 and chose him but was given key to no 10 which was a dirty unit of R700. Unit 10's bedding was dirty as previous guests had slept there. Carpets were dirty and smelly and full of stains. Had to collect own bedding and towels from caravan. Receptionist said owner would come to see us, which didn't happen, we had to go to her. Unit looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a long time. Sanitized bathroom before use. Breakfast was not included in the amount paid. Had to pay extra. Dinner was extremely disappointing, roast mutton neck according to menu, was boiled neck that was frozen, reheated and put on your plate only half warm with a cold jelly sauce on top. Neglected food. Not value for money. I will definitely never stay there again.
There was a heavy downpour and the rooms flooded, leaving a charging cellphone sitting in a pool of water. Streaks of water out of one of the plug sockets suggested that water ingress had been a problem previously. The owner mopped up the water with a single towel which was strangely all that seemed to be at his disposal. There was very little apology even when a child slipped on the wet tiles and hurt herself. No soap in the soap dispensers. Many mosquitoes but netting on only one window of one of the rooms. At just under R2000 for one night, we did not feel this stay was value for money.
I booked a two bedroom place for me and my wife. We have 1 year old twins and they have to sleep separately or they wake each other up. I confirmed the day before that everything was fine. When we got there at 6 o'clock in the evening they only had one bedroom available and the unit I booked was already full of people. We then tried to sleep, but at 12 o'clock in the evening we packed up and drove on to the Cape. It put me and my family's lives at risk.

Van Zylsvlei B&B Karoo Guest Farm is a beautiful and comfortable place to stay and child-friendly with the open lawns that are there with a play park. There is also a nice big swimming pool for when you want to cool off and relax after a long day on the road. Bar and restaurant has a nice atmosphere and provides everything one needs. The owners are very friendly and service is great. We would recommend the place to anyone.

There is nothing better than the silence of the Karoo to find rest for the soul. Combine this with top notch hospitality, a lovely swim in the farm swimming pool, finished off with Karoolam for dinner and you have a winning recipe that makes even children yearn for more.

I was a bit confused. I booked a family unit for R900. However, my nephew decided not to come along. I informed the guest farm of the change by e-mail. They then put me in a single room with a shower. I did still pay R900. Other than that, the owners are very friendly and approachable, they are very welcoming to animals, and I was comfortable enough.
Ideal drop-off location with small children. Beautiful dogs, Simba and Pongo. So patient with our grandson. Delicious dinner. Thank you very much.
We have stayed at van Zylsvlei 1 time before and it was a very pleasant experience. The room we stayed in was well furnished, tidy and the facilities such as the swimming pool and dinner and hospitality were so nice. This year was different. Upon arrival, we were unpleasantly surprised with the fact that they do not serve breakfast or dinner due to Covid. This was not mentioned in advance and we still paid the full overnight stay. We had to drive into town late in the afternoon to eat something and also leave very early because we couldn't get breakfast. We were in a rondavel and it was an extremely unpleasant experience. Apart from loadshedding which no one can control, a bat entered our rondavel and with a struggle we got it out. All the rest of the evening we could hear them trying to get in. Needless to say we hardly slept. The towels were not clean either. I don't think I'll just stay there again during the whole pandemic.

This overnight accommodation was developed as a motel along the old N1. The new N1 is also very close. There are comfortable rondavels and rooms available. Meals can be enjoyed on request for an extra charge. Recommended for a comfortable halfway stop for a fair amount and comfortable beds.

The people are very beautiful persons and guests are looked after, made to feel very welcome. Food was really very pleasant and everything was affordable. Bar's seating area could be a little more comfortable if you want to sit there and relax and watch sports, but recommendation from our side. Then again it is a very interesting bar and you are looked after when you use it. The only negative thing is the pool is dirty, there are two beautiful dogs on the yard and they swim together and their hair is all over the pool, apart from hair in the pool the pool is still dirty, and if you want to cool off and relax by the pool would not be advised. We are dog people and even for us it was too much. Then the fence around the yard is neglected and makes safety feel compromised. But we slept very well and spent the night and rooms are exactly what is expected. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful.
A tiny room with one double and one single bed crammed into a tiny space so that you had to climb over the beds to get to the one side. Thank goodness we were not three adult males who would have been expected to share a bed! No shampoo or conditioner provided. Advertised as providing Wi-Fi - what they don’t mentioned is the Wi-Fi is only accessible in the main house and not in the rooms. Advertising DStv but it is only OpenView. Very limited channels. I will not be going there again!
Although clean facilities, breakfast is not included at R880 per night. The rondavel is extremely cramped, no room for bags or to move, much less to hang out clothes for the next day. The bathroom has no place to hang towels, two hooks that are there are either towels or clothes. To sit somewhere, the choice is either the bed or outside on wire chairs. We toured the Cape for a month and found the accommodation disappointing for the price.
We took a chance on booking too early and they accommodated us immediately with no questions asked. Pet friendly and tasty dinner and breakfast. Beautiful rondavels. Sorry the rondavels do not have personal outside stoeps.

The rondavels were comfortable and well equipped and suited us for an overnight stay. Both dinner and breakfast were well prepared and served. Both had however to be ordered on arrival. Annelie and Deon were most gracious hosts and made us very welcome.
We traveled with 4 dogs and it was no problem to accommodate them. 7 years ago we were just as kindly received. So much so that we were determined to visit them again this time. Food is heavenly, reasonable prices and good quality.
Unit is clean, tidy and private. Friendly service. Meal average.

Me, my husband and my mother were initially going to spend the night at Van Zylsvlei to break the journey back from the Western Cape to Gauteng. After we made our reservation, my sister, her husband and their 2-year-old son also booked three people to stay the same night as us on the way so that we could embark on the journey together. On arrival the owners confused the reservations and gave us a room with a double bed and two single beds (instead of one single bed for my mother) and for my sister's family only a single bed. When we questioned this, my brother-in-law was told that he got what he paid for, even though he booked for three people. Luckily we were together and my mother could share a room with them and my husband and I slept in the room with the double bed. However, the room had an overwhelming smell of mothballs which was extremely unpleasant. When the owner noticed the mistake, we were called into our room to ask why we didn't highlight the mistake, which we did, but the man refused and so we made a plan among ourselves to ensure a bed for each guest. However, what made the stay at Van Zylsvlei unpleasant is the fact that my sister's little boy was bitten by one of the dogs. There are many dogs on the premises, most of which are very cute and friendly. My family loves animals and my niece is no exception. The owner's husband who walked into the room with us saw my nephew kneeling by the dachshund and failed to warn that the dog was aggressive. When my little cousin rubbed the puppy (and he knows how to be gentle and touched the puppy very gently), the dog bit him. When the man from Van Zylsvlei noticed this, his response was simply "Oh yes, you can touch any of the dogs, except that one." No apology notwithstanding my nephew's hysterical crying. Also no notice at the place to warn that one should not touch the dog. We obviously won't be back.
We slept in rondavel. If you cannot cope with air conditioning, you should not stay in the rondavels at all. Don't know how other facilities are. There is no cross ventilation in the room. If it's hot, you have to use air conditioning, otherwise you'll perish from heat and stress. Oh yes, and the mattress is so worn, it should have been replaced a long time ago. We understand food can be a problem, but serving meat that appears reheated and is already slightly dry is not acceptable. Instead, only do simple dishes that can be made fresh. For the prices paid for accommodation and food you expect better. Will not stay here again. Site is completely open with no access control.

Firstly the beautiful farm environment immediately impressed us. The bedrooms and bathroom was clinically clean and neat. Also one of the bedrooms also had aircon after an extra hot day, with DStv to boot. We rested well for the next day's long journey. We will definitely stay there again.
Now that was the right start to a holiday! To be able to sit outside on New Year's Eve was the start of the best holiday ever. Very friendly reception, they even offered to make us dinner even though the staff were off duty for the evening. Friendly dogs (that are never bothersome), greet you when you enter the gate and even jump into the pool with you if you let them. The pet lamb was undoubtedly my favourite. The rondawels are spotless and I will recommend Van Zylsvlei anytime. It will definitely be our overnight stop on future travels. 10 out of 10!
We have been using Van Zylsvlei for some 7 years now as our half way stop on our biking trips. Best place to unwind and relax for the next days ride.
The people are friendly and warm. We were treated like old friends and welcomed with an open heart. The houses are beautiful, neat and comfortable. It's nice that the property is also a bit out of town. Not too far at all, but just far enough that it can still be seen as a holiday in its own right. This is the best place to sleep over in Colesberg.
Will stay there again. Tranquil and quiet. Everything needed was in the room.
As with our previous overnight stay, van Zylsvlei was spot on. It was a pleasant surprise that there is now a small fridge in the room to keep our drinks cool for the next day's drive. We travel with 2 yorkies and find them the perfect overnight accommodation. It's quiet and peaceful, away from the busy N1. Enjoy delicious mutton curry for dinner and tasty breakfast the next morning, all at reasonable rates. We have already booked accommodation for our return journey.

It was enjoyable and perfect for a stopover. Had all the necessities. The following 2 aspects could be improved: 1. The swimming pool was dirty 2. The place isn't pet friendly towards all types of dogs. They have dogs on the farm and we bought our dog, but our dog doesn't really socialise well with other dogs. We had some difficulty with this as the other friendly dogs came to us looking for attention. Perhaps they should set up an area for dogs who aren't that keen to socialize with other dogs.
Was quite disappointed as the unit I stayed in (no 17) didn't close tightly enough - there was an icy cold air moving through the place all night, not at all what I expected at R500 for a single person per night .
I was scared because there is no proper fence around the place. And the breakfast fee was very expensive. R70 per person. I just wanted cereal.
Everything was very good, the place is not very clean e.g. the kettle was so dirty inside, we couldn't make coffee.

One is always sceptical about what you'll get when you book over the internet, so we were pleasantly surprised with Vanzylsvlei. From the moment you enter this place, there is a friendly atmosphere and pretty gardens. There is loads of space for the kids and dogs to play and run around safely. Our room was comfortable with all the facilities one could ask for and, if you'd like a meal, there is a variety of delicious meals to choose from. We were so impressed and would definitely book here again.

Never wanted to spend the night in Colesberg because everyone does. From Zylsvlei at Colesberg, but not in Colesberg. It was worth it all the way from the owners to the two dogs that awaited us with wagging tails at our door the next morning.

We 7 "girls" traveled from Mossel Bay with our motorbikes, and arrived dead tired at Van Zylsvlei. The swimming pool was a delight, the meal made us long for our childhood days, the rooms nice and clean. We slept peacefully without any disturbance. The beautiful clean tranquility of the farm greeted us the next day. Our halls will sleep there again at any time.

I made use of Van Zylsvlei B&B year ago and remembered it as a positive experience. That is why we came back.
With small children, I feel as a mother that the kettle, cups, glasses can be stored away or packed a little higher. There are tea bags, coffee bags and sugar in room, but no milk. For R810 including breakfast I will reconsider my options for a next time. We had cheaper accommodation in a self-catering setting in Hartenbos by the sea.

It's a bit expensive for what you get, but it's clean, we liked the fact that it was out of the main town and got a farm-like feeling, very calming.
Firstly, read the description. It's not a B&B, because only accommodation, not breakfast is included in the rate, contrary to what you expect when you book a place that says B&B in the name! Secondly, of the 3 lights in the bedroom, only one was working! In the other room, only 2 out of 3 were working! The bath's tap is broken. If I had to give it a score out of 10 it would be 2!

Van Zylsvlei has been our stopover many times on the way back home. It remains pleasant to sleep over at Deon and Annelie's. Clean, tidy and dinners delicious at the end of a long drive. Van Zylsvlei is also ideally located.
The only problem we encountered there was that a few of the rooms did not have hot water.
Everything was good and peaceful. The unit may have been a bit on the handsome side. For people bringing dogs - be aware that there are at least 3 dogs on premises. The dogs are all friendly (but this may cause problems if your own dogs are not particularly friendly).

We had a spacious room and our stay was pleasant. I just wish that when you book they clearly state if the unit you booked has air conditioning in it. We were there during the heat wave and were totally unaware that only some rooms have air conditioning.

There is a dirt road that turns off the N1 which is already causing confusion. There is a bar with air conditioning and cold refreshments but no air conditioning in the reception and lounge. It would have been pleasant if the hostess could have invited people to sit and relax in a cool air-conditioned lounge. Now one has to try to brave the heat in the old little room without air conditioning. The food was reheated and tasteless, without salad or vegetables. At least the Woolworths dessert was tasty.
I booked two rooms and in my email it was also confirmed as such. However, we had to sleep in one room or find other accommodation at short notice. I have clearly specified two rooms. There were also a few other problems: one bedside lamp without a bulb, the shower door handle fell off and the bathroom door lock was also broken.
The accommodation as such is very good. There have been cases of power outages because the current electrical system cannot handle the load (electric blankets and boilers). It is still acceptable. What is troubling is that the lamps provided do not work or there is no paraffin in them. The food served was clearly pre-cooked and frozen and then reheated to serve. It is absolutely tasteless and poor value for money. I usually stay at Orange River Lodge and if I compare the 2 destinations there is a huge difference and the rate at Orange River Lodge is not much more expensive. I wanted to try something different for the sake of interestingness, but I was disappointed.
With regards to our booking at Van Zylsvlei. We will definitely NOT even consider staying over there again. The place was full of spider webs and small spiders all over the place. There were pieces of dirt falling from the roof constantly. There was no aircon. Furthermore the matrasses on the beds were as hard as rocks, so were the pillows. The duvets were heavy warm winter duvets, in summer not a good idea. I really think booking in there was not worth the money we paid. This B&B was more expensive than the above mentioned B&B. I do think this B&B should not even be part of your option as an accommodation option!

A wonderful oasis in the hot Karoo. Neat, spotless and a very friendly host and hostess.
This was an overnight stop for us on the way to Johannesburg. It was peak season and as such, the rooms were all booked. What I didn't realise was that campers are also welcome here and they were located on the lawns in between the little cottages. This is an ideal place for to break a long journey but it's noisy [multiple campers with dogs] and people are on the go from dawn so don't plan to sleep after sunrise. The accommodation is functional eg small rooms, sheets, etc but no mattress covers.

Van Zylsvlei is a very convenient place to stay for the night almost halfway between Cape Town and Pretoria. Good service and good value for money.
We slept well, our neighbors were a bit rowdy early in the morning, but that's not Van Zylsvlei's fault.
My stay was good, but the dinner was not very good for me.
Nice stay, but our towels could be better and the bathroom door could not close properly.

We only stayed one night and unfortunately did not have dinner, although the menu offered a good variety. We would have greatly appreciated an air conditioner in the unit, seeing as it is high summer and the fans in the rooms were not sufficient to cool the rooms sufficiently.

Can't really recommend it. I think for a stopover that is so far from the N1, the place should offer more (like air conditioning). They call them self-catering units, but there is not a single fork or a fridge. Due to the fact that there is no air conditioning, the rondavels get terribly hot in the summer. The old fan is inadequate. There was a swimming pool without water on the premises. Not sure if this is meant for guests.
At least it's pretty clean, but don't expect too much. The owner is friendly. Breakfast is reasonable, not really value for money.

The owners really go the extra mile. We didn't get there until 21:00 and on the way they called me and asked if they should have dinner for us. We slept really well. It's too nice to get away from Gauteng and be in the Northern Cape. It was so peaceful and clean and tidy. It's definitely a must for someone who wants to switch off!

The countryside has its own unique charm. I go out of my way to sleep over in smaller towns and farms while traveling. This sets the mood for the rest of the trip. Van Zylsvlei certainly did this for us as a family.
All one needs: bed, shower, delicious breakfast, and strength for the long journey.
There is no problem with accommodation. Rooms are neat and clean and you are received friendly. The flies were a bit of a bother, but we have to assume it's a farm! However, what bothers us more is that our "neighbors" were allowed to spend the night in the rondavel with their 3 large dogs (probably peasants).
Was certainly all we needed for our short stay. Comfortable, clean and great hosts. Wake up to the sounds of cows, roosters and lambs - great.
Really enjoyed your place and will use it again. A ride under beautiful trees, and cooling off in the swimming pool was refreshing with the cold beer. Thank you very much!

It was a lovely spot for an overnight stay. My 2.5 year old could run around and get all the exercise that he missed out on.

Enjoyed the stay, however there is no security, not sure what the crime rate is like. I come from a crime area and having no gates is a worry for me - but nothing happened. It was definitely a good stay!

The host and hostess are very friendly and you immediately feel at home. It was very cold and the electric blankets and heater were of great help. However, the bath water was not very hot, but excusable because everything else is very positive.

After a long and hot travel from Pretoria this was just what we needed. Relaxing and quite.
The rooms were spacious and clean. Lovely bathroom. Unfortunately the toilet was not working. Annalie and Deon were very good hosts. They offered us room service although it is not standard procedure. The food was good, but unfortunately we were served without any cutlery. There is no telephone to the reception - so you had to go out in the bitter cold (-6 degrees in the morning 7h30)if you wanted cutlery which is what we tried to avoid by ordering room service. There is no security gates at the entrance or to the various rooms - which makes you feel unsafe. The road from Colesberg is in a poor condition.

There is a shared guest lounge area with a cosy fireplace and complimentary Wi-Fi, but be warned, just like the pace, the internet is slow in the Karoo. Each unit also has Wi-Fi. The guest farm also has a lovely outdoor swimming pool, braai facilities, and a bar.
