Beautiful place. Staff helpful and friendly. All the signposts to Waschbank River Lodge are very confusing. Only use the Gariepdam exit from N1, regardless of which direction you are coming from. Then the road indicators are very clear.

We are repeat customers of Waschbank River Lodge. The views of the river are spectacular from the wooden deck off the lodge and rooms. Prior to arriving at the lodge, we requested that the bed in our room be made up as 2 single beds rather than 1 double bed. Unfortunately, this request was not possible, and instead, a single mattress was placed on the floor next to the double bed. The meals at breakfast and dinner were delicious, but we were disappointed that there were no light meals or sandwiches available during the rest of the day. We were also disappointed to find items added to our dinner bill which we did not order or consume. I have informed management of this overcharge, and I hope to be refunded for it.

A quiet, picturesque and tranquil place on the Orange, perfect for breaking the trip between Cape Town and Jhb, and worth staying a while. Waschbank is a great place, we'd recommend to anyone.
Everything about the stay was spot-on. The location next to the river was incredible and so scenic. Even reeled in a few yellowfish right in front of the lodge. The food was excellent.

The new caravan park ablution block is very nice. Not even talking about nice infinity pool overlooking river. Staff only have to forward gate code because there is no mobile reception at gate to call.
The furniture in the room is very old and outside there was an ashtray that was not clean. The porch was not cleaned either. We couldn't shower in the morning because there was no hot water. The dinner was very expensive for what we got and didn't even finish it. There was also no ice available.

The location, which is situated right on the Orange River is absolutely perfect to set the mind at ease after a long day's travel. The relaxing facilities like the pool (for the summer) and lounge/deck area are well-kept and also just add to making one feel relaxed. A lovely place indeed.

It was really a great stopover for us. We arrived in the early afternoon and could just sit on the porch and watch the river. The staff are professional, friendly, helpful and really a good representation of the place. We also ate at the restaurant that night and our overnight stay included breakfast. The food was excellent! Our room was clean, tidy, beautiful and lovely to stay in. We are sure to make this our regular stopover between Pretoria and the Cape.

Waschbank River Lodge is one of our favourites. where you can sit on the deck watching birds go up and down the Gariep. It is a fabulous stopover. You are able to kick off your travel weary shoes and relax on a sofa listening to the pleasant sounds of the Groot River. It really remains top class.

What a gem. My first time visiting Waschbank River Lodge and not dissapointed at all. We arrived 5 minutes before sunset and took beautiful pictures. Staff is very friendly allocate 10 people in the rooms within minutes and informed us of the dinner and breakfast times. Delicious food was prepared. It was wonderful to be able to just relax on the porch after a long day's driving. Lodge and staff are fantastic. Just one suggestion, maybe a guest toilet in the 8 bedroom house and stairs from the parking area behind the house for loading and unloading luggage. Other than that, no complaints!

If I wanted to find fault I would say just put biscuits in the room with the coffee. Food is restaurant is very good and the staff deserve a gold star. I will never sleep over in another place again. Clean linen, warm sleep, good food and a very nice view. Can stay there for a week.

Staff provide excellent service. Zelmari, in particular, went the extra mile and even arranged a welcome take away breakfast for us as we had to leave early the next morning. This was the perfect start to our holiday in Cape Town - well done, keep it up!
If you are touring the country, this is undoubtedly the place where you want to stop and spend the night. Just come early because the silence of the sunset is something to experience.

The oasis was a big surprise. The natural beauty. My mouth must have been hanging open the whole time. We only stayed the night on our way back to Cape Town but regret we couldn't stay longer.
Waschbank is a place to stay that I would recommend anytime. It is peaceful, beautiful and the service is great. All you hear are the birds and the river. And the 'infinity pool' with its view over the river is just what one needs to cool off in, after a long drive. The restaurant's food is also excellent and good value for money. The rooms are beautiful, very clean and comfortable. The self-catering unit also has everything you will need.
We had a fantastic night on the banks of the river. The welcome was exceptionally warm and hospitable - we felt right at home. The unit is absolutely beautiful and very tidy. The view was breathtaking from our unit and we really enjoyed the tranquility of the surroundings. Breakfast was included in the price but unfortunately we had to hit the road early the next morning. Great was our surprise when the owner offered to prepare food packages for us. This little place is definitely a gem that we will visit again.

Waschbank River Lodge was a surprise. The environment is breathtaking, especially the sunset. The rooms were well equipped, but a bit on the smart side. A nice place to stay. The restaurant's food was exceptional.
Waschbank is a nice place, but I'm a misfit with Waschbank. The problem is ornamental incense sticks in the room that permeate everything (we were in room 7). My nose dripped all night and only stopped beyond Colesberg. We couldn't open anything because directly opposite room 7 are four other rooms' air conditioners whirring. Also be warned that room 7 is very small. There are e.g. only room for one bedside table. The result was that my wife stepped on her glasses at night, ruined the frame and injured her foot. Finally, I must point out that parking is not at the residential units, but about 50 m away. Other units are further still. There are friendly staff who help with the arrival, but at 5 o'clock in the morning they are of course without a trace. It's an important piece of information for older people who are considering staying there.
It is so pleasant and peaceful to sit on the porch after a long day on the road and enjoy a nice ice cold drink and watch the sun set over the mighty Orange River.
We were lucky that all the locks of Gariep Dam were open, so the Orange River was very full. Delicious meals available in the restaurant. On the way back to Cape, we will spend the night there again to better explore the area.
My son had a great time fishing on the banks of the Orange River! The help and knowledge that Peter offered was very welcome and it was a great success. I never once had to worry about security because you can see where everyone is from all angles even from your room. Here you can really relax!

We were pleasantly surprised! It was actually just a place to stay the night, but could easily stay there for quite a few nights! It is such a peaceful place and our room was perfect for what we needed. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and even packed our breakfast for the next morning in a packet for the road. The perfect place for a walk in nature and a sundowner on the deck, especially when the Orange River is running strong! Their prices on food and drinks and the accommodation are really very reasonable. It's probably our stopover from now on.

The restaurant was a bonus, even though we were in a self-catering unit, we could still order there while the fire was burning.

Prior to arrival we were regularly called and informed that accommodation was ready and they were looking forward to our arrival. Vanessa went out of her way to make us feel at home and her welcome was excellent. Even went so far as to upgrade us to a riverside view room. During dinner at the restaurant we were once again helped and served by Vanessa who made everything so wonderful for us. Vanessa is a great asset to the guest farm and goes the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. Location of accommodation is excellent and highly recommended.

Wonderful location, superb dining experience and service from Yonda and hostess Zelmari. The room we stayed in had an upstairs loft bathroom which was awkward for us as seniors. Next time we'll make sure to get a regular en suite room.

Even though we were excited about this stay beforehand, it exceeded our expectations! Zelmari and team, you certainly provide exceptional service! The location on the banks of the Orange River is idyllically beautiful and yes, do take a look at the washing bench in the river! The grounds are exquisite, the units extremely tastefully furnished and spacious. Sitting on the beautiful deck in absolute silence and watching the sun set over the river is just indescribably beautiful. We highly recommend Waschbank. May you go from strength to strength!

Waschbank is a special oasis on the banks of the Orange River. It's nice and calming to sit on the deck and listen to the water flowing by, especially after the long drive. My mother and I immediately felt at home and the service from Zelmari and her team is excellent. The room was clean, tidy and very well equipped for a single night's stop. The restaurant's dinner and breakfast are also top notch.

It was a really incredible stay. The hostess made us feel so welcome. The view is absolutely gorgeous. My favourite stop-over! This was the second time I've been there and it was as amazing as the first time. The food at the restaurant is delicious!
The lodge was clean. The view from our room was fantastic. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The on site restaurant was a plus. We enjoyed every second of our stay and would have stayed an extra day or two if they were not fully booked. We will definitely be back especially when we can participate in activities provided by the lodge.
Lounge set in the self-catering unit is really not comfortable. The faucets in the shower require some effort to control water temperature.

A great stay at a great lodge situated with a picturesque outlook. Food at the restaurant was great! We have stayed at this venue twice now and will return in future. Loved it!
The food for dinner was delicious. And the morning takeaway breakfast was filling and a nice surprise. We arrived late, kitchen was willing to prepare dinner in the meantime, and keep it ready in the room - despite their kitchen being closed.
The couch in the 8-sleeper could use some TLC, the fireplace doesn't draw very well either but these are small issues for a great venue.
The shower in the 6 sleeper unit could use an upgrade but besides that a great stay with an even better view.

Despite the sluices having been opened and the river in flood right in front of the lodge, we caught small and large mouth yellow fish, mud fish and mirror carp. Superb highveld thunderstorms for photography.

We booked here at the last minute and got the last room. Little view of river, but was very comfortable, although a little cramped.
The unit was tidy but the furniture was old and the floors were cracked and broken in places. The shower is also difficult to set with the hot/cold water.
The view is breathtaking, a nice farm atmosphere and peaceful. The restaurant is a stone's throw from the bedrooms and serves delicious meals at very reasonable prices. Breakfast was a bonus and included in the rate. The rooms are opposite each other and sometimes your neighbors' noises can bother you, otherwise it is beautifully clean and tidy.
Hospitality is unbeatable! All that is negative is the worn out old lounge set in our self catering unit and the very small shower.
My wife and I were received very kindly. The Covid restrictions level 4 just make it difficult to have a really cordial relationship. We had a beautiful view of the Orange River with a deck that extends from our room. You can go fishing, drive around or just relax by the river. Breakfast was included in the price and dinner could be ordered from the restaurant as an a la carte. There is ample play space for children to ride bikes and run around.

Very hospitable and went out of their way to accommodate the slightest request. We left very early and they packed a road meal for us. Restaurant is highly recommended, delicious food and a good time and to enjoy your breakfast on the bank of the river was the highlight for me. River was influence and that made it even more special. I will definitely stay there again, the tranquility, beautiful nature was just for me. Their employees were always friendly and helpful and complimented the cook.

The rooms are very dark and small. Not as they appear in the pictures. I would suggest they paint the dark walls a lighter colour, this would help a lot.
Didn't have the best of nights. Made a reservation at the restaurant to eat there the night we arrived, where we expressly told the lady who helped us that my partner was allergic to nuts (where she told us numerous times that she notify chef). When we got the food my partner had an allergic reaction to the food (had nuts in it), which I can't understand because we both had steaks. After I informed the lady and sent the food back, she brought the bill for us to pay. None of the workers offered help and just ignored it.
We had a wonderful stay. The linen, food and service were excellent. Zelmari made an effort to be able to freeze our meat overnight on the way to the sea. We would love to stay at Waschbank River Lodge again.

We stayed in cottage no 9. It was a beautiful cottage, very private with a lovely deck, that has a stunning view over the Orange River. The cottage had everything in it to make your stay comfortable. We had dinner at the restaurant, and enjoyed it very much. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We can recommended this establishment for a wonderful stay and we will definitely be back.

It was nice to receive a call on our way there to confirm our arrival and directions. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly host and staff. The accommodation is basic but was sufficient for all our needs. The beds are very comfortable. We were supplied with firewood and fire lighters and then left to do our own thing. All said a very pleasant stay. I have already recommended to friends and colleagues.
The place is very cute, people are friendly and the food is delicious. The people work really hard to keep you happy.
Both the owner and all the staff were so friendly and accommodating - we wont stay anywhere else overnight in future when travelling to the coast along the N1!
We have stayed at Waschbank a few times now on our way to Cape Town and back. It's a beautiful lodge on the banks of the Orange River. You just feel like your vacation is starting when you get there. Our room was nice and clean and the air-con was awesome in that heat. I would just like to have a small fridge in the room to keep some of our road food and water cold for the next day. The owner is also very hospitable and friendly, you immediately feel welcome.
The owner came to greet everyone and you feel right at home. Zelmarie went out of her way to meet people's requests. Very good service and value for money. Will definitely recommend.

It's the perfect overnight stop between Gauteng and Mossel Bay. We were able to get in another afternoon nap before we enjoyed something for the tiredness on the deck overlooking the river. The restaurant had a variety of dishes on the menu that were very reasonable and exceptionally tasty. After a good night's rest on a nice bed, we could pack the rest of our trip after an excellent breakfast (Included). We just booked a room again for our return trip. See you one of these days.

Rooms are clean and tidy. The 1.5 km dirt road is good but driving slowly with a regular sedan. Beautiful view of the Orange and small but neat rooms. Unfortunately, it seems that dogs are allowed to stay overnight in the rooms. The a la carte dinner was very good. Sunday breakfast wasn't until 8 o'clock which is a little late for most travelers. The juice with the breakfast packs was nice.
Driving to Johannesburg from Cape Town, this lodge is the ideal stay overnight. Great view of the Orange River. It was clean and safe. The gentlemen who took care of us Friday, is a great host. Will definitely return.

Wascbank's management went to great lengths in advance to keep us informed about the destination. The facilities themselves are affordable and tidy and very spacious. Delicious barbecues, fishing and good times made for precious memories.
Very good location, but take the N1 to Gariep. The room was spacious and tidy, with good water pressure in the shower. There is an air-con in the room which was definitely welcome in the heat. Fantastic view of the Orange River! The food was heavenly, steak is definitely recommended. Parking is safe and the staff were very friendly.

We stayed in the tent right on the river which was lovely. The staff went out their way to make it comfortable for us. It was lovely having a private braai area. Even though there is no electricity in the tent there is solar lights and gas for the shower. We were also supplied with an extension lead to be able to charge phones etc. All in all a good overnight stay after a long travel from Cape Town.

We had a wonderful stopover on our way back after our holiday. We enjoyed the tranquility of the river bank and the beautiful sunset from the deck. Would probably stay another night if we had the time. The grandchildren would have enjoyed it if there was also a TV in the chalet, but for us adults it was really great just to enjoy nature.

It was a pleasant and tranquil visit. However I believe their directions from the turn off onto Route 702 to the lodge are rather confusing. Maybe they should redraft that section.
Zelmarie and the staff immediately made us feel at home and went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The farm is beautiful and we all enjoyed the game drive! The food was just as delicious! We will definitely stop there again, should the opportunity come our way.

Very good accommodation for a person who wants to travel from Gauteng or further north to the Western Cape or so and is looking for overnight accommodation. Accommodation and location along the river is perfect.

Curtains were hanging very loosely and there were broken straw pillows on the bed - take them down instead. The room was clean, at least. The place has great potential, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in upgrading it. The view over the Orange River is very beautiful.

We really enjoyed our night at Waschbank River Lodge! Apart from the awesome view of the Orange River, their customer service was an absolute winner! We stayed there just outside the school holidays, so the lodge was very quiet. Friday (who was on duty the night we stayed) looked after us very well, especially the dinner and breakfast he prepared for us!

It was incredibly hot. The dirt road from the main road was in poor condition. We chose to stay in the tent with our two dogs. It was quite pleasant, but very hot. Would rather recommend a room or one of the houses. Had an amazing breakfast on the deck.

We stayed in the tent. The shower needs some work. Could not regulate the water temperature. Scalding hot or freezing cold (works on gas). Also very little flow, made it difficult to get wet! The bed was also very hard and uncomfortable.
We wanted to stay in the Gariep area specifically, had a Jack Russel with us and tried Waschbank River Lodge, especially because of the meals. It was tranquil, relaxing and beautiful by the water, our Jack Russel moved around and didn't bother anyone. Because it is sheep country we had lamb chops for dinner but we were disappointed by the food. The breakfast had a big variety but it wasn't on standard. The tranquillity overpowers the not so good experience with the preparation of meals.

We were not very well received. There was no one at reception, we then went to the restaurant where we found a lady who didn't even say hello and just asked if we wanted to check in. After we filled out the forms, she gave the key and asked if we knew where the room was. How were we supposed to know where the room was? She then took us to the room without giving any information about what time breakfast is etc. There was also a door in the room that separated us from other people that was not locked, we opened the door and looked into someone's room. We were not told that. Other than that it is a very nice place and clean and tidy. All food is just not fresh. Will go there again and hope we are received better.
The accommodation, food and surroundings are fantastic! Because you are next to the river, we found an incredible amount of bugs and spiders, but the woodcutter on the porch made it all worth it! The place is well located and hidden so that one experiences peace in nature and the piece of dirt road is very well maintained. We received friendly and good service. We were very satisfied.
Stay here was pleasant. Staff friendly and the meals very tasty. During holidays with many visitors, staff can be more attentive that everything in the rooms is in order. Our bathroom light didn't work at all and neither did some of the other light bulbs in the room. The coffee powder was in a cute little bottle, but the teaspoon is too big to fit into the bottle's mouth. Tables outside were full of dust. I wish they could pay more attention to these little things. Just talk about driving.
Our stay was very good. Was warmly received and shown to tent. Beautiful view of river. Tents are comfortable. No power but reception very kindly agreed to recharge necessary devices. Boiling water for coffee must be obtained from the restaurant. Dinner was nice, fairly large variety.

The lodge's location makes it something special and worth visiting. The reception was friendly and good and the two rooms, 3 and 4 were neat and clean. The large veranda in front of the bar and rooms is a lovely place to visit. The food was tasty but unfortunately cold. However, attention must be paid to the maintenance and the years show too clearly. The beds can also be upgraded with decent mattresses, especially for the back sufferers. The coffee put out can definitely be improved as well.
I will not stay at Waschbank again. It used to be a beautiful place that was well maintained. Management was friendly and helpful, but infrastructure is falling behind and stove and microwave are part of their history, that's how old it is. No TV.
Although the lodge is located in a very beautiful setting, we were disappointed with the room. The hems of the curtains were pulled loose and parted. The air conditioner was inadequate - it was very hot and did not cool the room. The sitting and dining room also do not have sufficient air conditioning to ensure a nice and cool room on a hot day. Although breakfast was included in the price, we left at 07h50 without any breakfast. (The power went out and by 07:45 there was still no sign that any alternative would be used for breakfast.) I also suggest that breakfast be made available from 07:00 for the guests who want to leave early and who have a long drive.

We were early at the destination and the request to check in was handled well without any problems. However, we were very disappointed after seeing the room and the rest of the resort. I would like to bring the following observations to your attention: The bed in our room was of very poor quality. The wooden frame was very stiff and I would not be able to sleep on the bed with peace of mind. The mattress had also seen better days, and with my wife's back problems we just couldn't spend the night there. There was only one chair available in the room, but accommodation was arranged for two people. I inquired about the possibility of grilling but was informed that it was not an option. This was and is acceptable as the reservation was for B&B, but after sitting on the deck for about 10 minutes without any waiter visiting us, we decided to look for other accommodation. The resort in general is not very clean and some of the other accommodation options where self-catering is available were not clean with braai still visible in the braaiers. The disappointment in general was very big and the fact that I had to book other accommodation for the 17th and 26th March 2018 at a cost of approximately R2700 is just totally unacceptable to me. If a comparison could be made between Waschbank and the rest of our stay during our vacation, I can strongly recommend that a professional comparison be made in terms of price and value for money. A very good example is our stay in Stilbaai. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen (house), large living area, indoor and outdoor braai facilities, large outside entertainment area and an excellent view for R1000.00 per night. Compare this to the R790.00 for Waschbank and you will understand my disappointment. From the above it is clear that I would certainly not recommend Waschbank based on our recent experience.
We got there and they weren't ready for us. I then called a lady to say we had booked, and she told the gentleman at reception to put us in apartment 9. It was bloody hot and the apartment even hotter. The gentleman put the air conditioner on for us, but it is not working properly. Not the living room or the room's. The furniture was very neglected and the couch was broken. The bedding and towels are quite worn. The floors were full of dust and the outside deck was dirty, full of dust. The outdoor table was also very weathered. I washed it off and threw two towels over the table for us to eat on. Have to say the staff were friendly and helpful in helping us unhook our trailer. That price per night is shameful to pay for such a place. For the price I expect much more comfort. Maybe the owner thinks you pay for the view, I don't know. Must say the view was very nice. It was a big disappointment to end our holiday with. I was just too tired and hot to complain, otherwise I would have definitely gone to find another place for myself. It's the most I've ever paid per night and also the worst I've ever experienced.
The budget room at R750 a night is not cheap. There are no closets. No toiletries are provided. The bedding looks old and bathroom mat dirty. There were also only facilities for 2 x cups of cheap coffee.
The setting is beautiful with the river and the photos are beautiful on the website. The unit we were to sleep in was not attractive at all and I had no desire to sleep over there after a long day of driving. The coffee station's sugar had been eaten by what I think was a mouse and in one corner of the room excrement from the animal could be seen. The bedding does not look good and the pillows that decorate the bed are torn and in my opinion very old. Showers don't look good and in my opinion the place needs a makeover. The view over the river is so beautiful and it creates such a peaceful atmosphere that it is such a SAD that the rest doesn't get attention.
Reception very poor and unfriendly. Rooms untidy (curtains, toilet broken, no soap in rooms). Children of manager or cook play where you eat or at your room. Weak. Bartender excellent, very helpful.
We spent the night there on our way to Cape Town and I was pleasantly surprised, it's a cute, clean place on the banks of the Orange River. Definitely worth a stop there.

We were received like family. Service is some of the best we have ever had. It's the 2nd time we've stayed at Waschbank and we'll definitely be back. Our dinner was fresh and the steaks perfect. Owners are involved and ensure their guests' comfort. View over the Orange River is breathtaking, the sun bag is definitely one for your camera.

After a long day on the road it was nice to pop out of the place! We slept in the tent for one night which is literally right on the river. The tent is very comfortable and large. The food was some of the best I've had in a long time and the prices were dirt cheap for such good food! The receptionist was amazing and yes, she can cook! It had been a stunning pit stop where I could completely relax next to the stunning Orange river.

Room was full of insects. Breakfast was only available at 07:30 which happened later. Were first in breakfast hall and last to receive breakfast. Location good, but that's all. Will definitely not see me again.
The room is freezing. Linen as thin as a sheet and that in a part of the country that is so cold. Raw concrete floors. Dirty. One extra blanket, not even a dog would use it probably. Electric blanket but no wall socket. Have a look at A Dams View to see how it is supposed to be done. After having a look at my room I took my key to reception, got in my car and drove away. I was totally embarrassed to let my wife sleep in a place like this, so I booked A Dams view instead.
I was pleasantly surprised by the vibe, service, and area. I felt at home and relaxed immediately. It was a great experience and I will definitely return.
Slept there two separate nights. We were received very kindly every time. The rooms are not very big, but comfortable and the essentials are there. The staff is very friendly. The dinner offered if you want to eat there is very pleasant. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and you can relax with a drink in hand while watching the sunset over the Orange River.

Arrived early and was greeted by Friday, the manager, who is most friendly. We enjoyed a dinner and breakfast which was good value for money.

Waschbank is a peaceful destination with staff who give personal attention to all the guests. Really a place where you feel at home and welcome.
I just recommend putting candles and Doom in the chalets as the gnats were a nuisance, we kept the windows closed, but some of them entered when we were braaiing outside, like when we had to open the door to go outside. Was such a nuisance, especially since we didn't have Doom with us in the car, I took two candles from the car and that helped quite a bit later.
Beautiful location on the bank of a dam. Just note that your tent won't have any electricity for e.g. the hairdryer. When it's raining one can't braai and the tent also doesn't have a self-catering option.
The room was neat, but the shower was terrible. The water was either scorching or ice cold, there is no midway. We had to wait 45 minutes for the breakfast. There was only one waiter with 20 people having breakfast. It was completely unorganised. Get some help when it's busy!
The place is not living up to its full potential. We stayed in the tent. At least put one electricity source in. There was a bad small in the resort.
The room is suitable for 8 guests, but only one can shower or bath and then the water is ice cold. The geyser is way too small. The house smelled of smoke, which was quite unpleasant. We couldn't light a fire in the fireplace, because the smoke would go in to all the rooms that were open and separated by partitions. The house was extremely cold, the beds are old and we will never sleep over there again. Beautiful view of the river at the restaurant and the food was good. Except the breakfast which could be improved with a wider variety of food choices.
New management has a lot of work regarding upgrades. There is a ceiling panel that is going to fall out, a door that doesn't lock and finishes that need attention. The bathroom and floors needs to be upgraded. It will be difficult to have the rustic appearance seem clean again.
It will be a challenge for the new managers to turn the place around. The deck is old and was dirty. Young people braaied and I have never eaten a colder and chewy piece of meat in my life! The rooms have no carpet and the floor is cold under feet.
The accommodation is advertised as luxury accommodation. No power is available at the tent to power a fan or air-con as it was very hot and sleep was impossible. Coffee facilities is provided but with no power, a kettle cannot be used. Help and attitude of staff not great. Maybe the rooms are a better option. A set menu with chicken curry as dinner in 38 degree temperatures is not advisable.
Do not stay in room 7... Restaurant is on request.

Gariep is almost halfway between the Cape and Pretoria to divide the journey into two less tiring treks. It is close enough to the N1 to turn off quickly, but far enough to offer tranquility. The farm accommodation struggles to live up to the expectations created on the website. When you turn down, the weathered old notice boards no longer create the impression of a "Lodge". The dusty farm path between the woods and fields up to the accommodation may also not appeal to some. Although the river does offer a cooling opportunity for the brave guests, accessing it is risky and cannot serve as a substitute for a swimming pool. The building style of the units lends them a certain character with partially covered verandas where you can have fun. Unfortunately, this also creates other problems: - The eight-bedroom unit is a rectangular open-plan structure with panels that partition off separate bedrooms without really offering any real privacy. - The flat-roofed structure without ceilings together with the windows on the roof contribute to the fact that the air conditioners struggle to cool the open-plan room. Holidaymakers who are not only looking for an overnight stay, but expect a "Lodge" or holiday cottages with beautiful vistas on the river, may feel that they can do better elsewhere.
The face and layout is good but the rooms are disappointing - the walls are unplastered and the room very dark.

Very neat place to spend the night if you are looking for a place to sleep after driving far, but would also be able to stay there for longer to enjoy the Orange River on a canoe! Very pretty.
Maybe the staff can turn on the heater about an hour before arrival, so that the room is nice and warm on arrival.
We really had a great time. Soul, mind and body rested. We visited many places around and were therefore also very informative. The highlight was the visit to the dam wall where we were taken to the bottom and the lock was opened. Breathtaking. The owners were very nice people, had a great conversation. The staff go out of their way to make it pleasant for you.

The menu was very limited, not as advertised in the photos. The rooms are divided with "pre-fab" walls that offer no privacy, one can hear everything that goes on in the other rooms. Our cars scraped over one of the bridges we had to drive over. Therefore only the 3 stars for the location. Only a 4x4 won't scrape. The setting is beautiful, but could be used so much better with better accommodation. Our daughter's bed was so covered with mosquitoes at bedtime that she could not sleep there. Think the thatched roof was the problem. The advertisement of the menu, which showed a much larger variety, did not materialize at the time. We had a choice of two dishes for dinner.
All that can be improved is the bed, it's very uncomfortable.

We got there on Sunday afternoon at six o'clock only to find out that no food is served on Sundays at all. It was not as advertised and we had to find food elsewhere. The breakfast also had no bacon.
I was very disappointed in the condition and quality of the units.
Everything was special; I would only recommend that you replace the mattresses because the mattress in the unit we were in was done.

Well, what shall I say? I expected more, but for one night's sleepover it was perfectly adequate. The road is very dusty and not suitable for low or luxury vehicles. The road needs some attention and the gate that you have to slide open yourself is far too difficult to move. Parking is not covered and your car is next to other cars. Fortunately, I was traveling with my Golf 4 (which I don't care too much about). The units remind me of the woodland with the smooth shiny cement floor and animal skin mats. The finish is very simple yet neat and functional, although there is no TV and radio. The basic facilities work well. The restaurant is neat and has a pleasant atmosphere. The food was of high quality and the staff friendly. The overall atmosphere is pleasant and peaceful.
Fantastic location, superb food, simple but stylish accommodation, attentive service.
We stayed overnight driving back from from the West Coast. It is the perfect halfway!
The road to the lodgecan be better otherwise no problems.
