37 guests' feedbackIt's hard to describe in words how special this place is. The road from Sutherland to the farm is breathtakingly beautiful. The view of the Glass House, the unspoiled nature. To watch the wind and the cold from a cozy glass case with a nice fire. Hospitality. Quite an experience. We are definitely going back!
It was a very nice experience. Wonderful!
It was wonderfully secluded and the view was incredible. The facilities were more than adequate, except perhaps the bathroom which was a bit cramped. The manager was top notch and he immediately made us feel at home. A follow-up visit will definitely be seriously considered.
A magical and inspiring stay in a beautiful location. Aarfontein Karoo Hoogland was everything we hoped for, and we enjoyed the seclusion and silence. The host was wonderful and kind, and we loved Shiraz and Maggie (the dogs), as well as the ostriches.
Our stay was so lovely, remote and peaceful. The journey there was scenic, and you are surrounded by beautiful landscapes the entire time. The little cottage was organised and had everything you might need to self-cater with loads of character. I would love another stay!
The place was probably one of the most breathtaking places we have ever stayed. The view, the concept of the glass house, the environment - everything literally takes your breath away.
Incredibly beautiful and unique destination.
Rustic cottage in the mountains far away from everything. Great location and we even got to experience a snow storm from inside the glass house with a cosy fire. Took our 2 old Labradors with for the weekend - enjoyed lots of walking all around the farm. The host was excellent - friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Only issue: They desperately need to change the sleeper couch to a proper bed. The frame is sagging in the middle and extremely uncomfortable. We resorted to using the other sleeper couch mattress underneath and sleeping on the floor to get any rest.
Interesting place! Environment is incredibly beautiful and unique. The fireplace inside the glass house is a winter winner, and when the wind blows so badly, one is cozy inside. The sofa beds are not really comfortable!
It was bliss for the soul at Aarfontein and especially at the Glass House! It's a beautiful location, but be aware the road is 4x4 to get there! I would definitely stay there again - the tranquility and stars in the evening were definite highlights.
The Aarfontein Karoo Hoogland was the perfect getaway. The remote location and quietness of the Karoo was exactly what we wanted for the weekend. The spectacular views from the Glashuis exceeded our expectations. Make sure to take a couple of walks during your stay; the panoramic views over the Karoo are amazing. The host was a great communicator and always ready to help. Just a mention - make sure you have an off-road vehicle when booking the Glashuis. You might need an elevated vehicle to reach Aarfontein farm, but from there it is another 6km, very close to a 4X4 road up the mountain to the Glashuis.
Fantastic place to break away to for peace and quiet. Very friendly people! Will go again for sure.
Glas huisie ( Glas house ) was our abode for a couple of nights. How remote have you been? This is certainly the most secluded we have ever stayed. On the cliff edge overlooking the ……. sits a little dwelling made mostly of glass. Getting there is for extreme 4x4 enthusiasts only. The last 6 km will take up to an hour. The view is breathtaking though. Even more spectacular is the night sky- we went during new moon to make to most of the experience. You see the milky way in all its splendour and you literally sleep among the stars. . It is well equipped with the necessary utensils. A gas stove and gas heater for warm water supply are very practical. The wood-burning stove and massive braai supply ample heat as the nights get pretty chilly. Solar power supplies the medium size fridge /freezer and if you had enough sunlight, we used our air-fryer ( yes, we travel with one!) and Nutri-bullet ( yes, we travel with that too). Walking trails will take you past herds of sheep and some springbuck. In summer there is a farm dam - great for some wild swimming. . The Bed: the only downside of this experience, it is a torture device- enough said. We hope the hosts at Aarfontein replace it with great speed. We actually checked out one night earlier as a result of that horrific bed!
The offering is absolutely incredible, no complaints except for two. A sleeper couch as the main bed should never be offered. It was so uncomfortable that we considered leaving early. Please put in a proper bed. Also, we had to share the house and our food with a family of rodents, which also kept us awake at night.
We didn't know it was this far in. So that hindered our travel plans a bit. Especially getting to the glass house. It is of course very beautiful. The shower is quite a hassle, if perhaps more attention could be drawn to it. We were very nice and he was really there for everything.
The location is perfect. No noise, no people. Just me and nature with the beautiful sunrises and moonrises.
It's incredible and indescribably beautiful. The view, the silence and the stars. Was kind enough to pick us up with his pickup truck when our car couldn't drive the road. I can really recommend it.
It was breathtaking. The wind comes from 30 poles sometimes, but the view is special and worth the effort. One thing is you must have a 4x4 vehicle, or prearrange to be picked up.
What an absolutely amazing place! The wind was rough, but it definitely added to the experience. Just a warning with regards to the road, a high clearance vehicle is an understatement and fill up in Sutherland - the road is quite far in with no signal en route. But all in all, one of the best we've had. The host was wonderful; we missed the message about bringing wood, but the host sorted us out quickly! 10/10 would recommend.
The whole experience exceeded our highest expectations. It was lovely to be out of the cold, the wind and the sun, but still feel like we were outside. The quiet and seclusion was exactly what we needed. The house is well equipped, but the bed does not sleep well at all. We will bring an extra mattress next time.
The glass house is a little place from heaven, with the cliffs and beautiful scenery right under your feet. The silence and stars in the evening are just indescribable! Just be ready and prepared for a long dirt road and 4x4 trail to the cottage!
A wonderful weekend of doing nothing and resting. Views and stars to dream of. It was truly a wonderful experience. Just be prepared that the last stretch of road to the cottage should preferably be tackled with a 4x4 or vehicle with high ground clearance. Annalene and Antonie, thank you for your hospitality and trouble with directions.
We were pleasantly surprised with the Glashuis. A beautiful, clean and tidy "house" with everything you need for a few days' visit. Here you not only admire the beautiful view, but also the silence. The indoor barbecue and the wood-burning stove provide delicious warmth on freezing winter evenings .We will definitely come back again. Our host and hostess were friendly and very helpful.
We really enjoyed our time in the glass house! It's very far away from everything, and when you're up there you feel very secluded (in a good way). The view takes your breath away! The cottage itself has everything you need and the fireplace just makes it cozy quickly. The guesthouse managers, Annalene and Antonie, went out of their way to help us - their willingness was truly exceptional!
The most beautiful stone house. We haven't relaxed so much in a long time. The weather was wet, cold and windy but that didn't stop us from lighting the fireplace, barbecuing and just being cozy. Our hosts were very nice and checked in every day to see if everything was okay. Would definitely recommend it.
Absolutely amazing and tranquil glasshouse on the top of a mountain in total solitude. Just what my wife and I were after. We loved our 4 days here and recommend it to everyone. Thanks to the hosts Annalene and Anthonie for hosting us.
The fact that the farm is remote and the journey there is a challenge does not take anything away from the wonder of the Glass House on the edge of the gorge. Hospitality and effort to make everything comfortable is high!
Nice challenging route to get there. Offroad motorcycles can get there. Very beautiful nature. Quiet and enough silence. House has everything you need.
Beautiful location for quiet getaway.
Wonderful, breathtaking views. Far away from any people. If you need a break from the busy life, this is the place for you.
If you like the open spaces and break away from the busy city, this is the place for you. We had a wonderful time in front of the fireplace. The branch shed provides shelter from the wind and the braai place has formed a delicious 'oven' for baking bread. There were problems with the solar system, but our friendly host quickly came and sorted it out. Perhaps you can only pay attention to the bathroom, because when you take a shower, the water runs under the corrugated iron into the bedroom. (Even if you completely remove the shower head). Other than that, everything was delicious!
The weather was wet and very cold. The road up was eroded and muddy. Our Jimny handled it with ease. We were kindly escorted by Anthony. If we had done it on our own we would have had the following potential problems: 1) Getting lost ─ I strongly suggest a small marker of some sort (Yellow dot on a pole) every 200m just so one knows one has not taken a wrong turn. I understand that one does not want to disturb the natural environment but seeing as the is already a deeply rutted muddy track across the veld, I don't think a few small markers will make much of a difference. 2) Distance ─ as above ─ I think it's important to have signs every 500m or every km showing how far to the destination. 3) The braai filled with water during the rain ─ not a problem for us but might be a problem for you when it rusts. 4) A small shelf in the bathroom would be useful. Sometimes we need to lift the toilet seat. 5) A clothes rack to hang coats would be useful. 6) A portable emergency rechargeable light would be useful. 7) A little more wind sealing would be nice but it's hard to know where the leaks are unless one is up there during high winds. Just as an indication, on the first two nights of our stay, the binds were being blown sideways by the wind coming through the doors and the windows (forecasted 35kph ─ I think more than that). We took it as part of the adventure but we wore a lot of layers and used a lot of firewood. I am not a wuss and I have been in many cold and windy and desolate places. As a new guest, one has no sense of direction and has no idea how much further to go and whether road conditions will get tougher or not. If Anthony is escorting, none of this is a problem, but it is a significant drain on his time and on diesel and wear and tear. Next time I will obviously do it on my own.
We felt so at home and had a great time. Our little house had everything we needed and we just wanted to rest and pack up. The lapa was completely sheltered from the wind and we spent hours visiting the fire.
My wife and I really enjoyed the weekend away at Aarfontein. We took our 3 dogs with us and were scared at first of Glaskas' high cliffs, but if your dogs are obedient and not strays, it can work. We underestimated the distance from Sutherland via the dirt road to the farm and then from the farm itself to the Glaskas house. It definitely takes a bit longer than Google maps suggests, it took us between 3 to 4 hours from Sutherland. If you drive calmly on the dirt roads because they are 4x4 roads. Take into account that your vehicle must have good ground clearance on the farm itself and you may be using a spare tyre. If you do take the extra travel time into account and make provision for it, this is still a special destination that you can't really describe to anyone in words. It is an experience I would recommend to anyone anytime and we will definitely go again. The house gives you peace of mind and the silence is perfect with a Springbok or kid grazing in the field.
Stunning view and a romantic setting.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Aarfontein. From the generous hospitality to the out of this world location, Aarfontein is a must for anyone looking for solitude and rest. We will be back!
What a hidden gem! The glass house is beyond amazing! You are on top of the world, not another human in sight. A wonderful place to reflect and unwind. Thank you to the host and hostess, for getting us up the mountain and for the friendly welcome. I will be back. Soon.
