81 guests' feedbackWow, what a privilege to be able to stay in such a special place! We spent 4 nights in the Houthuisie in October. Beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and Barbeton. It's quite old, not very spacious, but excellently equipped and we quickly fell in love with it. The Berghuisie definitely has a more spacious porch and will be cooler, because it is made of stone. The photos on the website show the Berghuisie, definitely more spacious and more luxurious than the Houthuisie. We booked there, but apparently there was a problem with the water pump when we arrived. First day was terribly hot, as only a log house can be, but after that it was cooler. The splash pool is small, but nice for cooling off. The owner is very nice and goes out of his way to help where needed, without being intrusive. The location is fantastic, about a few kilometers uphill with a fairly good but steep dirt road which gave our Jimny 4x4 no problems. Barbeton offers lots of things to do, we did the Eureka city and Eureka Pass with Wynand from Dusty Tracks, also the old gold mine and it was well worth the money. The geo-trail was also a revelation and we packed a nice picnic for the route.
Very nice despite the freezing cold weather.
The best place I have ever stayed, host so helpful and friendly. Clean and tidy place away from the city's noise, will definitely visit again.
It was very nice!
The Barberton Mountain Lodge is a beautiful place and equipped with everything you need for your stay. The owner is very friendly and made us feel at home immediately. The view is indescribably beautiful. It is wonderfully quiet with only the sound of nature. We can definitely recommend it.
We had an incredibly nice break, the cottage was perfect, the view breathtaking.
I can recommend Barberton Mountain Lodge. Owner is friendly and available 24/7.
Unfortunately we could not go, the owner let us know that there are international guests with whom he has a commitment and must honor. However, he reimbursed our costs and offered a free weekend. We'll see if that happens. So I mark everything 4/5 for now as most guests' feedback is. I don't want to badmouth the place. The owner apologized and accepted.
Dilapidated, poorly maintained and not clean.
Wayne and his partner are such warm, kindhearted human beings. Always willing to assist over and above what you would expect. Beautiful lodge in the most tranquil setting. Amazing views.
In advance, the host sent clear indications of how to get there. Friendly reception and offer of any help during stay. The wooden house is spacious and has all the basic things one needs. It seems as if people are allowed to smoke inside the house, which then leaves an unpleasant smell, something that put me off a bit.
My husband wanted so badly to return to Baberton for a visit - he had been there as a child 40 years ago. We were pleasantly surprised at how the town has expanded. Had a lovely breakfast in town and wandered around the museum. We went up the mountain for a breathtaking view and sunset. The next day we went for a walk on the "Fig Tree" trail and took the most beautiful photos.
We had a nice time and everything was there that was needed. Enjoyed the "rock pool" and slept soundly.
Really enjoyed my stay. Nice and quiet with the most beautiful view.
Will definitely stay at this beautiful place in the mountains again. Our host, Wayne, went out of his way to make everything comfortable for us. Thanks a lot, Wayne!
Here you can find yourself again, it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Many thanks to the host and hostess for their warm welcome. The house is very well equipped and enjoys the outdoor shower which offers a view of the valley and mountains. My husband and I are fully rested. It is a gem in the mountains. Thank you very much Wayne and your wife.
If you are a hiker, the earth is not flat here, prepare for ups and downs and you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Regular vehicle is good enough, but there is much more to see if you have a 4x4.
Is your soul looking for rest? Then this is definitely the place. You can walk and sit and sit and sit, because the "view" is new every time. A ride on the mountain is a must. The road is beautiful from bottom to top. The host and his wife are awesome people. You can't go wrong with the place.
We enjoyed it very much. The mountain house is very comfortable, the veranda and the view something special.
Sandra and Wayne make you feel at home and comfortable very quickly. Felt very safe. Most beautiful scenery and silence. Enjoyed my visit very much, will definitely go home there again.
Hospitably received. Wooden house beautifully clean and well equipped.
The host, Wayne, kept in constant communication with us from the time we booked until after we left. He's the most attentive host I've ever encountered. The unit was clean and as advertised. Spectacular views from the deck across Barberton and the valley. Lovely braai area and plunge pool. Free firewood. Highly recommended.
Would definitely recommend the place to anyone who likes nature and tranquility.
Rustic but absolutely charming cottage located high above Barberton, peaceful and completely relaxing environment. Fabulous birding, friendly hosts.
Hospitality fantastic. Well done Wayne and Sundra. Tranquility is idyllic. Will definitely visit there again.
We stayed in the Houthuisie. It was charming, clean and comfortable. Wayne went out of his way to make our stay pleasant. Aeroplane views of Barberton from the porch. Highly recommended.
Ideal for a getaway with views over the whole town from the spacious veranda. It was like relaxing for a few days at your aunt's cottage in the mountains. No pretension, but everything one could need. Quiet and peaceful. We really enjoyed the fire and my tall husband appreciated the large bathtub. Beautiful gardens and can't wait to use the wading pool and outdoor shower on a next visit. The dirt road from the village is in good condition and we saw goats and birds on the way to the Berghuisie.
We can recommend the mountain house without any doubt. We prefer to visit different holiday destinations, but Barberton Mountain Lodge is definitely a destination we will return to. The view is incredible! In the evening you look down on Barberton's lights and during the day you have the most beautiful view of the mountains. We were also lucky to have a lot of fog in the morning, which created a magical atmosphere. It was often completely covered with fog rolling right up to our front porch. The environment is delightful. Most beautiful palm trees, pine trees and eucalyptus trees. We went for walks and drove around. The panoramic views are delightful. The cottage itself was very comfortable. Lovely sofas on the veranda, comfortable beds and equipped with everything one needs. The house was also spotlessly clean and there was not a thing out of place. The host (Wayne) chatted with me on WhatsApp right after we made the reservation and was very approachable throughout and made you feel very much at home. His wife (Sandra) also went out of her way to make us feel welcome. They went to town on two occasions during our stay and each time asked if they could bring us something. The outdoor shower is also a winner. One feels like Adam and Eve among the banana leaves with the beautiful mountain view. We truly enjoyed every moment. Despite the fact that we were at home in the mountain cottage for four nights, we were very sad to leave.
Berghuisie is rustic and small, but equipped with everything you need, down to a fire pit and comfortable braai area with wood provided! We spent our time there on the porch reading and just enjoying the incredible view of the surrounding mountains, the many birds in the trees and at night the town lights below. Mountain Lodge will definitely see you again soon!
Thank you Wayne for a warm welcome. Your place is beautiful and very peaceful with an incredible view. Thank you very much for the ice it helped a lot. We will definitely consider staying there again.
The Houthuisie was beautifully clean and tidy with every comfort you need. The host was very hospitable and the mountain pool lovely. It was especially nice to have comfortable seating in the living room and on the porch. I just feel that the bed, especially in the master bedroom, definitely needs to be replaced. The path up the mountain was also quite a challenge for our little Corolla. But overall very nice.
We were kindly received and the Berghuisie surprised us with breathtaking views. The outdoor shower is lovely! It's a pity that the approximately 2 km footpath is not maintained, because it is a beautiful walk with nice views.
One can ride, walk, chill in a serene environment.
In comparison to other properties, this chalet is jaded and run down, in need of maintenance and a good cleaning. It costs far too much for what you get. This lodge, while very pleasant, was not in the league at all.
As a family with small children, we felt like it was home away from home. Amazing hosts. Really so peaceful.
Perfect for that special getaway.
The communication from the owner both before and after arriving was excellent. Wayne made sure we knew everything before arriving, asking about our drive etc. It was awesome and we felt very much as if he was checking up that his family was traveling safely. We had to collect a key from a security company in Barberton, which felt a bit awkward, but the added sense of security made up for that. The dirt road leading up to the cottage was extremely well maintained and Wayne was waiting for us on arrival. He was so incredibly helpful, even offering to catch and relocate all the bullfrogs in the garden in case they made to much noise. The beds were very comfortable, the couple of stairs inside the cottage a little uneven and the outside shower a bit unusual, but it did feel very much like a home and not some sterile "contemporary" boutique hotel. We also feel in love with the resident dogs.
Beautiful place and friendly and professional service.
This is ideal for people who want to be in nature and relax. We stayed in the log cabin and didn't need anything more. Nice hiking trails in the mountains and relaxing around the fire in the evenings - plenty of wood is provided to sit around the fire until late. Wayne and Sandra immediately made us feel very welcome with their friendliness. Will go back for sure.
The pop in pool needed to be cleaned. It was slimy to the feet. They need to get a proper pool filtration system so that the pool is crystal clear.
Excellent accommodation if you are a nature lover. Host and wife go out of their way to make everything as comfortable as possible. Will definitely use the Berghuisie again.
Calm atmosphere. Private. Owners very friendly and made us feel at home.
Very quiet place up in the mountains with beautiful birds. It takes 4 km gravel road to go up the mountain so you better take your groceries along straight away. You can take a shower outdoors, if you like, looking down into the valley which makes you feel to be really away from home. There is an indoor bathroom as well. Thank you Sundra and Wayne for a relaxed night at an unique place.
Wayne received us very kindly and we really enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.
The most beautiful view over town welcomes you as you walk across the stoep. The owners are hospitable and friendly. The house is beautiful and very comfortable. We'll be back. Thanks, Sundra and Wayne, for all your effort. You're a very special host and hostess.
If you want to escape the hectic life, this is the place to stay. The cleanliness of the mountain cottage, the incredible views from the mountain and the excellent service all make it worthwhile.
Will stay longer next time. House is well equipped and has a beautiful view. Good value for money.
The view is really fantastic and the house owner is super relaxed and friendly! If you like to be away from the rush and hectic pace this is the place to be! If we knew before we certainly would've stayed 2 nights longer.
Beautiful view from the veranda, braai area with wood (which is provided) is packed every day for the next braai.
The house has a vintage charm and the host and hostess made us feel very welcome. The view is out of this world and in the evening you have a view of the lights of Baberton. The accommodation was good and the house was clean and neat with everything one can need and more.
Thank you for the excellent service. The house is set on the most beautiful spot overlooking the town and beyond. Next time we will stay longer.
A fan in each bedroom would be good.
Loved how neat the place was and that they thought of small little things such as having soap to wash dishes and wood to burn for a fire.
The hout huisie was perfect for hubby and myself. We enjoyed the peace and quite. Only thing I would change are the beds. Hope to see Wayne and Sandra soon.
The privacy and seclusion was an awaited and welcoming experience for us. Thank you for the extra effort you did to let us feel welcome: fresh flowers in house, wood provided, extra services we did not expect. And the great romantic surprise on the mountain!
See stars.
Wayne and Sandra put a lot of effort into the booking. Careful directions, personal attention and a great mountain cottage with a breathtaking view are just the beginning. We were provided with firewood, the house was very clean and nicely decorated. We would be happy to recommend you and want to come back again, this time for a few days! Thank you very much, you are one of the highlights of our stay!
Nice and quiet, peaceful. Would go back again to take the walking route.
It is incredibly beautiful and a must to experience for yourself.
Wayne and Sandra, thank you for your kindness, we would recommend BML to anyone. Good for the soul!
Fantastic views! Wayne and his wife are wonderful hosts and hostesses and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and look after your needs. People-people with very good hearts. Perfect stay!
The Golden Nugget of Barberton. Absolute silence, only the night owls keeping you company through the night, high in the mountains overlooking Barberton. This one should be on your bucket list if you love the outdoors. Each chalet has its own swimming pool, great place!
Sorry we couldn't stay longer!
We had a wonderful 2 night stay. Will definitely go back.
Nice stay and can certainly rest well with a beautiful view.
Friendly reception, lovely place to visit, "rustic" and delicious!
Located well in the mountains.
BML's scenery is breathtaking. The Berghuisie was neat and clean. Everything we needed to enjoy a peaceful break was at our disposal.
The little time we spent there restored our souls. Breathtaking surrounds and only 5 km from the Heritage Walk in town, which was also fantastic. Sundra and Dayne went out of their way to help us with everything. Highly recommended for a couple or friends. Also 2 walking trails close to the lodge.
Berghuisie was very cute, looks like a real farm house, very cute furnished and everything nice and clean. There is nothing too short, boma and als, we really enjoyed it. The view was fantastic from the top. Will definitely go again if we head that way! We were also very kindly received!
Everything we needed was here and the accommodation is private and beautiful.
Very nice view and close to Geotrail and Swaziland.
For those who like simplicity, a walk in natural as well as planted forest (Sappi), this is definitely worth a recommendation. Expect no TV, but bliss and a beautiful view with a campfire!
Our expectations were exceeded from the booking, directions, help, warm welcome and farewell. The facilities and setting made us feel private, comfortable and terribly spoiled. Fire up the fireplace, sit back and enjoy this winter getaway, it IS worth every penny! Thanks to Johan for his incredible hospitality.
Thank you very much. We really enjoyed our time there.
Beautiful place. Provided with everything you need. It was a wonderful experience!
Breathtaking view and scenery.
Very peaceful place to spend a weekend. Just laid, ate, read a book, grilled, etc. If the outdoor shower and pool are important considerations for you to book the cottage, just call first and find out if it works before you book. However, the cottage itself is more than enough to calm you down and refresh you for another week. My personal favorite: there is plenty of wood so you can make a fire late into the night!
We will definitely go again, Paul and Sandra make you feel very welcome and the view is beautiful. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.
We stayed at the Lodge and it was excellent. Best view possible!
