The cottage was lovely and well equipped for a weekend away. Had a wonderful swim in the pond and was able to walk the dogs. Will want to come again in the future.
We had a great time. The cottage is beautiful and well equipped, and the surroundings are picturesque. The service was excellent and friendly.
We stayed at the stone cottage. My old spaniel really appreciated that there were no stairs to climb. The younger spaniel and I loved swimming in the dam. We also walked to the top dam. The vegetation is absolutely stunning. The house has everything one needs, and our host was very helpful. This trip was special.

Basterskloof meets everything that is important to us. Silence, beautiful nature, one feels far from everything and yet you are actually very close to everything. The fact that we only have to drive 45 minutes from our home in Somerset West to be in another "world", and that our animals are welcome, is invaluable to us. Jacobus made us feel very welcome.
We had a great time and relaxed. Children had a great time swimming in the pond and rowing the boat. Beautiful surroundings with hiking trails. Extra bonus were the horses that came to swim in the pond.
It was amazing, the setting was breathtaking. There were enough activities for the whole family, including hiking, swimming in the well-maintained dam, and exploring the woods.
It was a lovely winter escape close enough to Cape Town and far enough to feel like you were getting away from it all. Was a lovely cottage even got to forage for pine mushrooms.

Not our first visit, but definitely not the last. Just what you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but without having to drive too far. Friendly, hospitable owners. And on sale the option to buy some of the delicious homemade products.

Lion camp across the road on the other farm. You hear them roar and we could see them moving with the naked eye. Rondawel was a winner.
Everything was well arranged for us. Very nice and clean house with a very nice atmosphere. Beautiful surroundings, the mountains, proteas and ponds. We could really relax. We had a wonderful stay for four days and slept well. The cottage lacks some small things like some glasses, corkscrew and some hooks on the wall for your clothes, but it wasn't a hindrance.
We really enjoyed our stay! There are lots of hiking trails on the farm with a variety of nature to experience. There are also animals for the children to see. We rowed on the pond and barbecued every night. In the evenings one hears the roar of lions to fall asleep to. Lovely people who own the farm, very private and quiet - will definitely come again!
We loved the place. Views were amazing and the place had everything you need. Just a word of warning, come prepared with fly repellent as the just won't leave you alone I guess it's just the time of year.

Really nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I went with my dog and we had a great time swimming in the dam and hiking up the mountain. The owners were really nice and helpful too. Only downside is it gets a bit windy, so you may want to check the weather forecast before booking.
We had the best weekend! The cottage is gorgeous and we had the whole place to ourselves! Perfect weather allowed for hours of exploring and walking on the farm. Our fur-child absolutely loved it.
After a busy few weeks River Cottage was just the right medicine. Fresh air, farm sounds, beautiful horses and a warm fire are all the soul needs. Thank you Marna and Pieter for your hospitality and extra wood, we'll see you again soon.
Beautiful stone house where we stayed during the heavy rain that hit the Cape. When we lit the indoor barbecue (with a crate of wood that Jacobus was kind enough to provide free of charge), the house was so warm and cozy that we could comfortably prepare food with all the necessary amenities, cutlery and equipment that were provided. Was also lucky enough to be able to take the boat out on the dam the next day, float quietly and listen to lions roaring in the distance. Almost makes us feel as if we are in the Kruger National Park, but blessed enough to still be in the Cape with the Hottentots-Holland mountains in the background. We will definitely come back again, and bring friends with us this time.
THE cottages are a bit closer together than we thought, but it was still very private. Lovely walk up the mountain with the 4x4 road.

There were an incredible amount of flies. So much so, that we went through 5 flycatchers in 2 nights, that there was literally no more room on one of the ribbons for a fly to land on and we sprayed out a whole bottle of poison. Of course, we understand that this is in the wild, but we also feel that the Hosts need to take control of the fly infestation. It was absolutely unpleasant and one could not cook or eat at all or just sit in the house (or even outside) without the flies descending on you in a swarm. Unfortunately there was also no grill for the meat, no salad or chip bowl (we literally had to make our salad in an oven casserole), no hand soap in the bathroom - despite the fact that we booked for 3 nights and only 4 single matches to light the fire. Even though we booked for 3 nights, we returned home after only 2 nights because of the flies. Unfortunately we will not be returning at all in the future.

We loved our stay and our host was friendly and very helpful. Our cottage was totally secluded with beautiful views of the mountains and access to gorgeous fynbos walks. The highlight was the waterfall.

Quaint mountain cottage next to a dam in Botrivier. The most relaxed we have been in a long while - there is something about this place that let's you escape the daily grind from the second you arrive. The pics of the cottage don't do it justice. The perfect place to kick back and relax. We brought our dogs along and they had more fun than us. This place is perfect for dogs.
The accommodation is great with everything you need. Everything is clean and tidy, and you feel right at home as soon as you step inside. The mountain paths are fun to drive if you have the right vehicle and an added bonus is that you can explore any and all paths. Only thing that would improve the stay is a place to unpack your clothes! Just a few shelves and a place to hang warm jackets would be great.

Our winter snake weekend produced a storm, rainbow upon rainbow and glorious winter sun. There was a chance for indoor and outdoor barbecue, guitar and drawing, walks through the forest, out on hills and rowing on the dam. Fairytale mushrooms, horses, goats, frogs, green-headed snails. We will definitely go again!

We enjoyed it very much. I was surprised with the little things like 2-ply toilet paper, matches and candle as well as good pots and pans. Take your own drinking water with you. We were pleasantly surprised with the cozy house on the mountain. We never expected a place so close to the city would take you that deep into nature. We cannot wait to go back!
The rondavel was perfect for the 2 of us. It is next to the main house, but we never even noticed it. The garden separates the two. And the large swimming pool right next to the rondavel for an asset. We were looking for accommodation near friends of ours. It was perfect. Also drove up to the other log cabins and the two ponds. The area is beautiful. Hospitality was amazing. I highly recommend it.

What a great place to unwind! The neighbour's lions roaring at night was something unusual! We had so much fun rowing about on the dam and walking the farm roads. Also a great craft brewery 10 min away.
We will be back for sure! We stayed in Basterskloof's Mountain Cottage 1 and it was amazing. The cottage is well equipped and the veranda overlooks a beautiful pond. It is perfect for a weekend of rest. The owners are very friendly and make you feel very much at home on the farm. Definitely good value for money. We come again!
Very nice place to just get away and Botrivier has plenty to keep you busy.
If you want to do your own thing in your own way then this is a unique place for that. Take enough (food) with you so that there is no need to navigate the mountain road too much. Our little sedan - which rides pretty low - could handle the road as long as I stayed out on the ruts of the dirt road. If the other cabin would have been booked too - then it would have made the feeling of 'being one with the wilderness' less intense, but not detract from the unique experience. Take walking shoes with you. There are trails for a mountain bike. If you want to tan in style bring a lilo. The rowing boat works great. Bring the parasol and camping chairs for a pond picnic. We slept outside on the porch (there is room for a guard dog) but we slept very well (without our 'Guard'). For bird watchers there is a special sight that takes place at night (perhaps only in summer) but which should preferably remain a secret.
Lovely peaceful weekend. The doggies loved the freedom and enjoyed a swim in the dam. The cottages both have beautiful views. I agree with other reviewers that the pictures don't do Basterskloof justice. Much nicer than we imagined!
Basterskloof is close enough to Botrivier for provisions but far enough from town sounds to relax, walk, read and rest. The roar of the lions and cranes that come to say night at the dam was very special during our 5-night stay. We made good use of the stone-built braai outside in the evenings and the fireplace inside the stone house was ideal when the drizzle fell. The small fridge was almost too small for the time we stayed, but Uncle Jacobus was friendly and helpful in helping with freezer space (something to keep in mind for guests staying a few days).
We, and the dogs, really enjoyed our time at Basterskloof. The dogs had a great swim, and the views are just fantastic. Thank you very much for the wonderful time.

We stayed in Berghut 1. The hosts are super friendly and the cottage is at the most amazing location with a beautiful dam right in front. Small boat to bob around in. Had amazing runs and swims in the dam. Peaceful. Bliss. The cottage is so pretty en perfectly equipped with an inside fireplace as well. Cannot wait to go back. I do a lot of travelling and this was certainly a highlight if you looking to just chill in the peace and quiet of nature with blue cranes at sunset on the dam's edge. Perfect place to unwind.

This is one of the cleanest places we have ever stayed in. It is lovely and peaceful with a gorgeous view and has everything you will need. Although it feels remote - which is great - it is actually very close to Franschhoek, Hermanus and Kleinmond. The place is even better than the picture.
We had a great time staying here and resting. Private accommodation with everything you need next to a dam. In the evenings one can even hear lions calling from a nearby farm.
