Nestled in the Kouga Mountain range, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, Bo Kouga Mountain Retreat provides the ultimate getaway from the chaos of modern city living. Bo Kouga Mountain Retreat is ideally situated 29 km from Uniondale in the Bo Kouga valley between the Garden Route, R62 and the Baviaanskloof.

On this 300-hectare mountain retreat you can explore nature at its best, walk in the game camp with Eland, Zebra and Springbok and take a picnic with you to the waterfall. Your stay promises laid back days of tranquility amid fauna, flora and starlit nights. Here you will find a dramatic landscape, sensational panoramic mountain views and cool streams.

The farm buildings and accommodation have been extensively renovated and include 3 pet-friendly cottages. The interiors are well-appointed with your comfort in mind. Some of the out buildings date back to the 1860s including 1 of the 5 cottages.

At Bo Kouga Mountain Retreat accommodation is offered in 4 well-equipped and comfortable self-catering cottages.

The Gemsbok Cottage dates back to the 1860’s and has been beautifully renovated. The Eland Cottage, an original farm building also renovated, the Zebra Cottage perfect for a weekend getaway for two, and the Buffalo Cottage our largest cottage unit and more modern and luxuriously equipped.

"Exceptional setting and accommodation."

We were pleasantly surprised with the cottage (Zebra), neat and well equipped. Ample wood was provided to drive away the cold with the stove. The surroundings are beautiful, peaceful and soul-enriching. Stars were beautiful because there is no air pollution. The walk to the waterfall was quite tough, just over 1 hour until there's a tough walk. But it was worth it. Our Beagle dog enjoyed the weekend just as much. Definitely recommend. Thank goodness for no cell phone signal, could put the phones away and take in the surroundings.

"Lovely well equipped cottage. Beautiful surroundings. Kind attentive staff."

Not only was the cottage well equipped with everything we needed, but it was also great to see that there was even provision for animals (bowls, leashes). Lots of firewood was more than enough for the rainy weather we experienced. Loved the closeness of the farm animals and the staff was very attentive and kind when we arrived to ensure we were settled in. We loved seeing the wild animals being fed and the waterfall and rockpool. Communication was great. We advise alternative roads because of the rain. Easy, no-fuss process. We will definitely be back.

"Bo Kouga is a fantastic family getaway!"

There is no signal - we laughed, hung out, played and talked like never before! The view is breathtaking! We took the walking route and it was tough on our city jays but also worth the waterfall! A hidden gem! The accommodation is top class and plain and simple all in one. It was nice and comfortable and beautiful in one word! There are goats, animals, sheep, kayaks, ponds, nature from a fairy tale! We will go again for sure! It was the most enjoyable, peaceful three days we have ever had! Fun and rest like never before! The place is so beautifully hidden, it's a piece of paradise hidden away in the mountains!

"Secluded, peaceful and beautiful."

Very nice few days spent there in December. The road directions were perfect and very clear. The roads were washed out due to the lot of rain so the owner kept me updated 2 days before our arrival with progress by the roads administration to push the roads open. The owner was willing to give a full refund but we decided to wait and see if the roads were opened and they were! We were very happy to visit there and the caretaker Tyler was very friendly and assisted us with anything. There was only one really cold evening but Tyler made sure that there was plenty of dry wood available for the fireplace (and for the barbecue). Fantastic place for people looking for some rest for their soul.

"A wonderful time away in beautiful nature."

A wonderful time where we disconnected from the outside world so that we could reconnect with ourselves. Beautiful scenery. The cottage is comfortably furnished and very tidy. Our dog-kids enjoyed the walks and were safe and snug while we relaxed. Lovely fireplace inside and enough wood allowed us to have a good time even with the cold and wet weather. We will definitely visit again.

"Peaceful, breathtaking surroundings."

It is the most beautiful place between mountains and the sugar bushes are in bloom. We walked to the waterfall and everywhere you marvel at the natural beauty. The house is cozy and well equipped and every day the big turtle and the cats come to say hello. We will for sure rest there again.

We stayed here for about 2 nights. The silence, nature sounds and breathtaking natural scenes had been heavenly. Tyler, the caretaker, was also very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful rest.

"Great stay, very pet friendly! Completely closed off yard with lawn, dogs loved it."

Only advice I can give to travellers is to try and plan their trips to do the last 20 km during daylight. The dirt road is drivable for any normal car with a responsible driver, lowered suspension sports cars or vehicles with very low front spoilers might have issues.

"Place for nature lovers, away from the hectic rat race."

Tucked away between mountains and valleys with the most beautiful view from cottage 5. The farm and cottage are spacious and we lacked nothing. Tyler was helpful and our three nights were actually too short, even if 2 of the 3 nights we struggled to control the hot water with the low pressure geyser. Our tomboy enjoyed it just as much! It was good not having cell phone signal. Pack enough food and forget about the rest of the world for a while. The zebras' and moose's feeding time was special and the silence of the night on comfortable beds was a great treat. The road to the waterfall for an unfit person like me was difficult, the last climb over rocks and loose stones, but I am grateful for the beautiful scenery we were able to explore. There are beautiful rock formations, proteas, water streams and an ice-cold pool at the waterfall's final destination to cool off tired feet. Just take a walking stick with you for a boost. In the evenings the log fire, moon and stars were a bonus and this hidden getaway is recommended to everyone.

Easy visit, really beautiful, atmosphere is peaceful and good for the soul. Driving onto the dirt road was unfortunately in the dark, but the road was in excellent condition as dirt roads come. If I had the time I would easily have stayed a few more days.

"We celebrated an unforgettable Christmas weekend with family at Bo Kouga Mountain Retreat and it was a great celebration!"

The rooms and cottages were all spacious and tidy and well equipped with the necessary kitchen utensils and crockery etc. The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful and the gardens and grounds around the cottages are very well maintained. Many thanks to Tyler who was on standby 24/7 and helped out when the water supply to one of the cottages ran out! We really appreciate you sacrificing your Christmas weekend for us! We would definitely recommend Bo Kouga to everyone who wants to break away from the Garden Route's busy beaches for a few days and just want to "breathe" and experience the deep silence of the Klein Karoo first hand.

"Loved it."

The drive there was beautiful and the place was a lovely surprise. Went for a walk to the waterfall. Great place.

Great location in hills on farm. Cottage was spotless and had character and charm. Peace and quiet and privacy - just what we wanted. Saw Mountain Zebra and buck near cottage as well. Quite a long drive to get there, but definitely worth the drive. Would definitely return.

We booked for four nights but packed up and drove after the first night. We would suggest that people be informed that it is a long dirt road to Upper Kouga and the only shops for food etc. is a further 10km out to Uniondale. The owner was not there, and there were some very, very hungry young kittens. The person who 'received' us would return later with a tourist form. It never happened.

Neat place where you can really switch off. We enjoyed the fireplace, as well as the porch with its exceptional view. Important to know: It's just too far out of town to just drive to the store, buy everything in advance. There is a large fridge with plenty of space. The kitchen only has a stove and microwave with a grill function, no oven. We enjoyed being without signal and WiFi. The available games provided enough fun.

Bo Kouga is just the place if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. There's no cell reception which provides you with the perfect opportunity to really relax and spend time in nature.

"All you hear is nature - on this peaceful farm only the farm animals are talking!"

Zebra Cottage is well situated with a view over the farm and surrounding hills. It's the ideal place for a dog's child to come and spend a holiday with the fenced yard. Cottage is neat and well equipped with a lovely porch for visiting and braaiing. It's lovely to go to the waterfall with its beautiful pools for a picnic and cool off. The unfit should preferably drive a 4x4 to the parking lot and walk 150 m from there (put on walking shoes instead to get over the ridge). The wildlife are used to people and normally hang around their feeding bowls so that you can look at their stuff. Great place to just relax and do the bare minimum.

"Very far to drive with lots of gates and no signal. Signs were not clear and we were constantly doubting whether we were on the right track."

The unit was clean but the furniture is old and neglected. If you sit on the couch, you fall into a hole. The shower curtain is very old and creepy and rags/drapes in front of windows are ragged. This requires a serious upgrade. Can't compare to other accommodation where we slept and paid the same. I would have liked to know that it would take us an hour from the turn-off to the farm. The kilometres are close, but it takes a long time to get there.

Having travelled and stayed in many self-catering places over the years, I must say that Bo Kouga are one of only a handful of self-catering places in the country that can really say that they are pet friendly. We were extremely impressed by the sturdy fences around the cottage which allowed us to relax while the dogs explored. Ian met us when we arrived and must be one of the kindest people we have met in a long time. He made us feel right at home from the moment we got there. Zebra Cottage itself is equipped with everything you need and very comfortable. We spent most of our days reading on the veranda which overlooks the valley, sat chatting by the fire at night and loved the walk to the mountain pools and waterfall. There is no cellphone signal, which was great! Using a strong router we were able to pick up relatively steady MTN signal strong enough to send emails and work from there though. If we are ever in the region again, we will definitely go back to Bo Kouga, it really was one of the best experiences we have had during our entire holiday.

If you are looking for tranquility for your soul, this is just the place. Thank goodness there is little cell phone reception, because it allows you to switch off completely and drink in the nature and silence. "It was the perfect quiet getaway."

We stayed in Zebra. The owners really thought of everything. The fireplace (including the large amount of wood) ensured a cozy atmosphere in the cottage. The electric blanket and feather duvets were a big plus. The silence and scenery was exactly what we needed. Jenga also provided further entertainment. We would recommend it to everyone.
