110 guests' feedbackVery nice, thank you. There isn't really anything to complain about.
Nice getaway for a father & sons weekend! No electricity, gas & candles are available, and a nice braai on the stoep - nice and quiet on the farm. 2 ponds are available for bass fishing. Bring carrots for Charlie & Sam, the donkeys! The houses are newly painted.
It was amazing. The host was so friendly and very helpful. We loved our stay there. We will most definitely recommend it and will be back!
We had a great time. We were lucky to be there in fruit season and had delicious plums in abundance. "Rustic" cottage without power. Nice walk on the porch!
Enjoyed our stay, thank you.
No power was not an issue at all - was a challenge getting phones charged as we still do run businesses remotly. as the add reads there is power else ware. . Now I know it read 2 ways. power else ware meaning somwhere else is power but not where you are staying. thats fine. We just read it as else ware- meaning somwhere else on the property , like a communal centre point between the chalets. no big deal - we enjoyed our stay and made it work. Thank you to Kosie the manager and Gawie the owner. pleasure dealing with them.
We stayed at Grootnek Guest Farm for New Year's Eve. It was quiet and peaceful, which was just what we wanted for New Year's. The cottage has amenities and checked all our boxes for a rustic farm stay.
The host was very helpful with directions, and the view was beautiful. We were very disappointed when we arrived to find there is no electricity and no lights or plugs. There was a gas geyser, stove, and fridge. I would suggest to note that the accommodation is "off-grid" though as we had to make arrangements for when we wanted to get ready and use a hairdryer and charge our phones.
The stay was lovely and peaceful. The reception was hospitable and inquiries were answered quickly. Everything needed is provided - the only problem is the gas cupboard - it is not cold enough to keep meat and food fresh for longer than a weekend visit.
Yes, very nice, no complaints.
Environment very beautiful, nice stay.
We had a nice stay. The unit is clean and tidy. The host received us kindly.
We had a pleasant stay at Grootnek guest farm. Very quiet and relaxing surroundings.
Accommodation was acceptable, poor water pressure, this affects poor shower facilities. The photos do not show the full stay. More photos would have influenced our choice.
Beautiful surroundings. Peaceful and quiet. Good for your soul.
Was nice and quiet, definitely rested.
We loved the quiet serene and beautiful surroundings, the variety of walks and the wonderful and generous hospitality.
Was very impressed by the cleanliness.
We loved staying here! Gert is a great guy who warmly welcomed us! The boys loved running around the farm and swimming. They enjoyed feeding the donkeys too! We really had a great relaxing time!
Wonderful stay, great hospitality and beautiful place. Thank you.
What a nice weekend. Two issues I had was that there is no electricity in the unit as advertised, if I knew this in advance I would have been better prepared. Secondly, with the temperatures soaring into the 30+ degrees the (plaas-Jacuzzi) was only half full, a touch disappointing. With that said, it was still a wonderful getaway weekend. I'd go again.
Accommodation was comfortable for a weekend, cooled off nicely in the small splash pool next to the house.
Gerrie the manager is a very good guy, service is not too bad.
The host, Gerrie, was very friendly and helpful. The stoep with braai place was nice. Please note, wood is not included. Other than that, there is nothing we can recommend. Besides driving around. Disappointed.
Our second visit to Grootnek. Lovely surroundings and view of the mountains. Comfortable and spacious house with everything you need. Very friendly reception by Gerrie, the manager. Would definitely want to go again.
Ek sal weer kom so gou as moonlik.
Nice and quiet and my dog also really enjoyed the visit. There was also a bonus with the beautiful pears that we could pick from the trees ourselves.
Gawe Gawie, good communication and very helpful. The place has everything you need. We really enjoyed the hot water and didn't miss the electricity at all. Lovely view with lovely birdlife. This was our second time. Will book again at Grootnek Guest Farm.
Will go back again anytime. Gerrie is such a kind person and helps you wherever he can. Also just want to thank Gawie for the help with the generator, much appreciated. Hope to see you again soon.
Fairly rustic, lots of hot water! Got lost on dirt roads, maybe put up some signage? Had to make two calls to owner, but worthwhile once we got there!
Will stay there again for sure.
We enjoyed a lovely quiet night on the farm. The house was neat and equipped with the essentials. The gas and candles enjoyed a real farm atmosphere and we could drink in the quiet experience of a summer evening on the porch!
Nice and quiet, food for the soul.
House neat and clean.
Cottages are well equipped. The mattresses need replacing, they are a bit hard. The entrance and bath are not elderly friendly. The braai is delicious on the stoep. The fridge is only cold after a day of running. It must be indicated that there is no electricity.
While the accommodation and amenities are fairly rustic with no electricity and no oven - only a gas hob, gas fridge and gas geyser, we spent most of our time braaiing and enjoying the view over the orchards from the expansive stoep. If you want your privacy assured, best book Bosveld cottage - it stands on its own up the hill. A walk around the orchards to visit donkeys, Charlie and Sam, is a must, as is sampling the farm's homemade jam.
We went for a little honeymoon and it was great. It was the perfect place to get away from everything and everyone and just disconnect from the busy life. The view is picturesque and the nature makes you feel peaceful. The owner was very friendly.
Great to be able to just switch off and enjoy the silence!
Away from the hustle of the city, nice and quiet!
Lovely time spent with family. Phones off, no TV and just chatting and playing board games.
See stars.
Do you really want to rest? Then Grootnek is for you. Sometimes I feel more tired after a hectic holiday than before one. At Grootnek I really felt like I could completely rest and relax and just lose myself in the absolute silence and natural beauty around me. Gerrie the farm caretaker is the pinnacle of hospitality. So full of humor and a real down-to-earth person. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he is full of information about the types of fruit as well as natural water sources, farm ponds and events in the area. He helped with anything ─ from a flashlight to wood and ice. If I could make any negative comments it would be the gas box. The smell of gas in the house was sometimes overwhelming and the freezer compartment was much too small for the meat we took with us for almost 10 days. As an owner, I would also perhaps invest in a new mattress for the bedroom and then perhaps make a plan to keep the water in the swimming pool clean. Other than that, it was really a lovely, peaceful time and we enjoyed it a lot. Thank you very much for your hospitality. We will definitely be back again.
Anti-flying spray is required in the cottages.
Friendly welcome by Gerrie our host. Don't expect luxury. This a a wonderful farm environment to unwind. Lovely view from cosy verandah. Beautiful fruit trees. Nice little private splash pool to cool down on hot summer days.
We would recommend the farm to anyone. Nature, kindness and silence - and delicious peaches!
We were looking for a break away from technology, corona and daily challenges. Wish we could have stayed longer, but will go back again!
Very nice visit. Just what we needed. Beds need attention. Was nice and quiet without power, stars amazing.
Would love to have marked hiking trail to top of back mountain. Sorry about the black wattle. Hope solution comes to get rid of it.
We enjoyed it so much. You hear the chickens crowing and the donkeys. The houses were neat and clean. Will definitely go again.
Gerrie was a wonderful host. The cottage was beautifully clean. We baked delicious bread, braaied and made potjie. The tranquility of the farm was an experience. We will definitely come again.
Gawie is a great host, even moved us to a bigger unit because he had a last minute cancellation. Great views, nice unit, very clean. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone.
We really enjoyed it. The people are extremely friendly and helpful. It was so peaceful and beautiful. All I would change is to put a shower instead of a tub in the unit. But the rest was amazing.
Absolute treat to get away from it all!
A beautiful rustic experience under the milky way.
These people understand the longing of a city person for a resting place. Beautiful with everything you need.
A bit more information about what to expect in the promotional material will be helpful to the casual traveler wishing to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Langkloof Valley.
A little gem, hidden away from the everyday traveler. The environment has so many secrets to explore. Gawie is an excellent host and is happy to share his knowledge of the area.
Our animals really enjoyed it and the house was just perfect
It was a lovely place to stay after our holiday! Would definitely recommend it.
Nice on the farm. Even during the week on a working farm, the tranquility was refreshing.
Quiet place, clean, tidy, very helpful people, would recommend. Definitely going again. Would prefer electric fridge and not the gas fridge. Thank you very much uncle Kosie and his wife.
A good experience, friendly, helpful reception. Sorry it wasn't fruit time!
A cosy clean cottage in lovely country surroundings, lovely walks possible on a working fruit farm. Make sure you are well stocked with whatever supplies you might need as the cottage is some distance from Uniondale. A pair of donkeys in a paddock near the main homestead gave us a lovely noisy welcome.
Farm pond/swimming pool was very dirty!
Cottage was very clean and neat, however, we were only given two towels for a family of four and no soap. We were told that when we arrived no one would be there but the entire time we were there, never saw another person so could not ask for towels or soap.
We would have liked more privacy and peace and quiet. It is really a lovely place with a beautiful setting.
We had a great time, but the bushveld house does not lend itself at all to a stay of 14 days or longer. We didn't have a fridge that worked and had to put our meat in the farmhouse store's fridge. There is no hanging space for one's clothes at all. Just one chest of drawers with 3 drawers that can't hold 2 people's clothes for 14 days. Curtains are still hanging on wire and do not fit anywhere at all. Bedding can only be improved.
Ons kon wegkom van die stad se geraas en net ons skoene uitskop en ontspan.
Fantastic accommodation. Rustic but had everything we needed for a pleasant overnight stay. I will stay longer next time!
Onvergetelijk!
Please give guests the opportunity to order a box or case of the fruit that is on the trees at the time of their booking. I think if you put the box in the cottage when the guest has ordered and paid, the guests can fill it by picking the fruit from the trees before they leave. This can be a fun activity and this will provide a very special gift that the guests can share with their family and friends when they get home. We can't get something so fresh in the shops. Thanks.
Beautiful surroundings. Clean and neat with a lovely shower. Candles!
I enjoyed a wonderful weekend at Grootnek with two of my friends. Total relaxation surrounded by the peace and quiet of farm life. We stayed in Karoo Cottage and the decor is perfect to take you back in time to when there was no electricity. Sitting by the fire and eating by candlelight. Don't worry because despite there being no electricity there is a gas geyser for hot water, a gas two plate stove and a fridge. Candles are supplied so there is no need to take your own. If having your cellphone charged is important then it would be a good idea to take a power bank - there is a solar charger but this is not sufficient for everyone. Gawie went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed our stay and had everything we needed. If you feel like just getting away from city life then Grootnek is definitely the place for you.
The house was clean and neat, everything we needed was there.
The view, location and everything with it makes Grootnek breathtaking. I love the Karoo so much, so it was the perfect getaway. Thank you very much for your hospitality, dry wood, and the beautiful farm. My girlfriend who stayed with me and my boy is heading that way again with her boyfriend. We love the place! See you soon, Gawie and Erika.
Will definitely stay here again.
Fantastic amenities and so much more than we expected. Friendly manager whom looked after us. Will definitely be back for a longer visit.
Enjoyed the time there, definitely worth it. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the farm life. Best water I've tasted in a long while.
We were warmly welcomed and really enjoyed the stay. The place is well equipped and the surroundings are beautiful. We really enjoyed the stay and will definitely recommend it.
This guest house has such a nice location in the Langkloof. We really enjoyed it, especially the peace and quiet, and the view. The host was so friendly and quite entertaining, and made us feel at home in a jiffy. Just a pity it is so far from Baviaanskloof, that was our actual destination.
Friendly service, very neat unit with everything you need for a peaceful stay. Could have a nice rest and walk around with my collies.
Accommodation good, but amenities such as micro TV and electricity missed. Drought makes the environment unpleasant.
So we were back sooner than we thought we would be, and yet again we enjoyed it immensely. We have decided that this is our favourite place. Thanks for your hospitality Gerrie and all you effort to show us the most beautiful spots in the area. Gerrie has a passion for the Langkloof. Thank you Gawie and Erika for the opportunity to enjoy life on the farm. See you soon!
It was more than we expected. Real farm atmosphere. There is beauty in simplicity. Love the candles and lamp, real romantic atmosphere. Exactly what we were looking for. Thank you very much.
Nice old farmhouse, friendly manager with the cutest puppy. Gerrie made sure we had everything we needed. The house was clean and tidy with the most beautiful old farm furniture and things. Nice big bath, lights that turn on with strings, beautiful old things. The chickens and the donkeys made us laugh. Next time I would like to try the separate cottages, they seem to have a very nice view. Very peaceful in the Langkloof, I would definitely like to go back.
We had the most amazing time. We really enjoyed it. We were in the heart of the Lord, the beauty, freshness and smell of the earth and fruit trees. The fishing pond is beautiful. The house's fittings were of everything a person might need and more. Private private private and even more privacy. It was a blessing for us to visit there.
We had a nice stay in the house. It's small, but functional and well located against the head and clean. The environment is pleasant, because it is between fruit trees and you look out over the trees from the porch. If you are doing the Route 62, this is definitely a rest stop to recommend. Don't let the fact that there is no power catch you off guard. Charge your mobile phone and tablet while driving. The atmosphere with the candles was wonderful. I can definitely recommend it.
Everything was delicious. There was no power and that was good too, but maybe you should know that ahead of time. Host was very pleasant and it was wonderfully peaceful. We could breathe again after the stress in the city.
We enjoyed the location. It is central to travel in the area and the peace and quiet was extremely relaxing.
Our focus was mother-daughter time in nature with no electronic or other intrusions on our special time together. We found it at Grootnek. The hospitality and helpfulness are top notch, the comfortable and tidy accommodation is nicely located between the fruit trees and everything we needed was available in the chalet. The tranquility was wonderful. We didn't want anything more - it was two nights to remember for a long time!
Thank you very much for the special reception and the arrangement that our dog child could go with us. Champ and I really enjoyed it. The gas lamps and candles were a nice experience and the nice hot bath water a comfort. Will definitely want to come again to experience the tranquility and hospitality.
Unbelievably tranquil and beautiful. Ideal weekend getaway home!
Really enjoyed our stay and will return.
No Eskom, it was wonderful.
Great service, great veranda and a great view! Only a good thing to get away from electricity and TV for a while. On the negative side, the seating on the veranda can improve (for dining and relaxing), and the mattress was too hard.
Our stay at Grootnek was wonderful. Peaches delicious.
Absolute friendly reception and hospitality. Breathtaking picturesque surroundings and views. Most peaceful atmosphere. Can't remember the last time we experienced such nice absolute silence (didn't think we ever would again). Accommodation was very nicely decorated, well equipped, silver clean and private. We lacked nothing (actually packed too much) and we felt incredibly at home and comfortable. The candlelight in the evening makes for a wonderful atmosphere. Without any TV or electronics, we could appreciate each other's company even more. The nice covered braai area ensured conviviality even in the light rain. To sum up: an unforgettable experience. You will definitely see us again.
Would recommend to anyone who craves silence. We are going to make this our regular getaway weekend spot.
Glad to get away from it all.
Our time on Grootnek was definitely too short. What a great place to be able to just switch off and be peaceful. The lack of electricity means that one would rather sit outside on the stoep and appreciate the natural life all over again. For us city jays, the incredible stars were a highlight. Lovely stay, wonderful hospitality and a fantastic view. We can't wait to go again!
The kindness and the reception were really very special. The silence, lantern and candles did the trick and brought us even closer together as a family. The view one has is wonderful. We really enjoyed the holiday, it's just a shame it's over so quickly! Uncle Gerrie from the farm is a wonderful person. We will definitely go there again.
Here you go back to basics. You wake up with birds chirping! The mountains and scenery reminds you there are more to life than a office and confined spaces. We met wonderful and warm locals. The eateries are amazing. We traveled to nearby "dorpies" and discovered gems. Thank you to the owners Gawie and Erika for creating a wonderful getaway. Special thanks to Gerhard who took the time to show us the most amazing water streams and mountains scenery. Overall a great experience. Last but not least thank you for great service TravelGround.
The reception was friendly, the accommodation was neat, clean and satisfactory. Very pleasant and nice stay that I would recommend.
See the stars.
We spent 2 nights in Bushveld Lodge which, like the other 2 lodges, did not have electricity and we were unaware of that when booking. There is a gas fridge, twin hot plate and water heater, but it's a bit tricky to know how it works if you're not used to it. It's basic, but pleasant, with great views. Gawie and Erika are good hosts and directed us to 2 good nearby restaurants.
Remember there is no Eskom power, but there is a gas cupboard and a gas geyser. Candles and lamps create a lovely atmosphere in the evening. If you don't like baths you will have a problem because there is no shower. Lying in a lovely bath of warm water by candlelight is another type of fun.
No electricity and TV brings refocus! We were able to rest and refocus on each other and the beautiful and peaceful nature.
The units are well equipped, self-catering with no electricity and have swimming facilities. It was sufficient for 3 days and the equipment sufficient. Gerrie offered us a wonderful walking route and it is something to remember along with the interaction with farm life. The area has a lot of wonderful experiences and destinations that can be enjoyed without the pressure of tourist buses that you can experience by only going "over the mountain" to Storms River which is 60 minutes away.
