42 guests' feedbackWe had a very relaxing weekend break. Peaceful, quiet.
Beautiful scenery and tranquil surrounds.
We enjoyed the view of the river from our room.
Very friendly and helpful staff. The food is top notch! The rooms are very nice and deserve a decent "makeover" - mattresses, bedding, decor, etc. The shower in the bath is also a problem and safety risk - the bath can be taken out and replaced with a nice big shower. The only reason I would recommend the hotel is because there is no other accommodation in the area.
This is a great getaway place, quiet, with great views of the Breede River. Be warned: it's a gravel road to get to the hotel. One of the trip's highlights was crossing the Breede River with the ferry. This depends on which direction you came from. The staff is great, and they have a five-course dinner meal which is a lot. De Hoop nature reserve is less than 30 minutes from the hotel.
Quiet evening and good food.
Would definitely recommend Malagas Hotel. The dinner was out of the books ─ never had such delicious calamari ─ compliments to the cook.
We really enjoyed Malgas. Quiet and very friendly staff. The food was excellent.
Location is biggest attraction.
Outbuildings and gardens may receive more attention.
Pictures on the web is false advertising - rooms and hotel are run down and dark. I booked a room with a river view - got one on the other side then was told I could see the river (maybe with a ladder and binoculars). I was told they could sell me a glass of milk to have with my tea in the room - for the amount of money paid for the stay one would expect milk. The water bottle in the room fridge was something my grandmother had and they said it was from water at the bottom of the dam - again one would expect a sealed bottle of still water as in other hotels. Staff at reception and in the pub were rude - place felt dirty and unwelcome.
Food excellent and staff friendly and always willing to assist.
Excellent facilities, excellent food. Staff friendly and accommodating. Lovely fires in bar area and in dining room - very welcome on a cold and raining evening.
Ideal for a weekend getaway. Away from the hustle and bustle in a beautiful setting. Rural friendliness and hospitality.
My teenage sons fished, hiked, swam and biked daily. Food and meal very pleasant. So safe. Great relax! Thank you
Close to De Hoop and Swellendam, where we both grew up!
Lovely quiet area. Old world charm with very helpful and friendly staff.
The hotel is clean and tidy. The staff are all friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinners are delicious.
You get to Malagas after an epic time on a bad dirt road. The hotel is beautiful and has a great garden, is clean and has friendly staff. The 5-course dinner was good, but I wouldn't drive there for the food.
Delicous meals, excellent service and friendly staff. Interesting location next to the Bree River.
Very cute place. Very friendly help. We enjoyed it a lot. Take into account the meals are on schedule which makes routine with small kids difficult as dining area is closed during times. They are not at all adaptable to the rules that give a hostel feel. The play areas are up stairs, as well as far from the dining area, which makes it difficult to keep an eye on the kids. There are other rules that may be made easier by parents with small children made to feel uncomfortable like a 2 year old having to wear shoes. I suggest that families with young children may have an earlier dining option. I have to mention Heidi's name, she was very helpful. Thanks to the whole team it was very nice.
Vriendelike diens en staff kos uitstekend.
Not fancy but well maintained and clean. Loved the atmosphere.
Lovely little spot. Very accommodating to families with kids. Enjoyed not having to cook and clean.
From the moment you arrive you experience the peace the Breede River Valley can offer. The facilities are neat, clean and the food is great. There was enough food to choose from and it was more than sufficient. The service was reasonably good, but there is room for improvement. Will be back.
It was our 2nd visit and we knew what to expect. Clean air, good food, comfortable rooms and good service. This time we took our boat and enjoyed the river excursion.
This was our first visit to Malgas, and out experience at the hotel was just awesome. Staff were friendly, and the hotel was spotless. Breakfast and dinners were good and well-presented. Rooms were comfy.
Characterful hotel with friendly staff.
We had a great time staying at Malagas Hotel! Will want to visit again!
Quiet place, neat rooms! People are friendly and helpful. Was a little disappointed in the food, rice dried out with hard grains in between, pork and fish dish a bit raw - but there was enough food. Breakfast was nice.
Reception and outside lighting could improve. The food and service were excellent.
The hotel is nice enough, it is clean and well appointed but some of the staff could be friendlier. The road to get there is atrocious and we had two punctures during our three-night stay, which wasted a day of holiday trying to get to Swellendam to change the tyre. We had hoped to spend time in De Hoop but it ended up being over an hour away on a bad road. There is not much to do at the hotel, the pool is very small but the view over the river is nice. The food was tasty but sometimes overcooked and the meat was dry, there were not a lot of options. It was a nice stay but we wouldn't go back again.
My 2 kids and I spent 4 nights at the hotel. The rooms were well serviced and the staff generally very friendly and helpful. I really recommend the hotel for young families.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Good location for De Hoop Nature Reserve, very remote. Food was okay for what we paid for it but was not great. Could have been cleaner, especially bed sheets.
We had a relaxing and enjoyable stay.
Malagas Hotel is in a very peaceful area. There you can relax and just enjoy nature.
Would stay here again.
See star rating.
Standard rooms are very average, still old TV's and bathrooms. Water in standard rooms was brown and the fan/light didn't work properly. Even the superior double room, nothing outstanding. Food very average, soup cold and tasteless.
Just maybe lacking a little "freshness" in the food preparation, presentation and room cleanliness. Excess of food available during meals, very helpful and friendly staff. Food preparation may look and taste just too greasy and as if it has been sitting for a long time. Wasting of food can be limited if food is prepared more according to modern preparation methods.
The absolute silence was wonderful for us. It's nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the countryside.
We were really looking forward to the secluded river experience. So disappointed, unfriendly reception, although the waitresses were friendly. The hotel really has a lot of potential, can be transformed into a perfect gem. We booked 2 rooms, my son's room was more modern but full of fish moths. We had to spray the room, bathroom and floors with Doom. Our room was across the dust road next to the petrol pump. TV did not work with remote control. We had to turn it on at TV, and every channel was just flakes. The room's carpet must have seen a vacuum months ago. The bath and shower curtain full of hair and tired. Sprayed spiders when we came in and the poor thing was still there when we left 2 days later. Gross.
