Mermaid Guest House's name is derived from the Dutch slave ship Meermin which suffered from a mutiny by its slave passengers and eventually ran aground off the coast of Struisbaai in 1766. Our guest house is situated in the picturesque town of Struisbaai, almost at the tip of Africa and very close to the site where the Meermin ran aground 243 years ago.

We offer our guests with all the hospitality of the Overberg. Mermaid Guest House offers single, double, twin and family accommodation in Stuisbaai and is fully equipped with every necessary amenity, facilities and services to make the stay an unforgettable experience. The guesthouse is a bed & breakfast only.

We are within a 400 m walking distance from the main swimming beach as well as all other amenities in town. Guests can visit our famous working lighthouse, the historical harbour and the southernmost tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

For the more adventurous person, there is whale and dolphin watching, deep sea fishing, kite and windsurfing, and the Spookdraai and Rasperpunt hiking trails. We also cater for nature lovers and welcome bird watchers, as well as anyone wanting to discover the beautiful proteas and fynbos.

We were kindly received and had a terrific time there. My wife and I have dietary restrictions and they fully accommodated us. The morning meals were served by a very friendly waiter.

Staff are friendly and helpful, breakfast was excellent. Room was as desired, stairs are a bit steep, this was not a problem, it gives you the feeling that you are staying on a boat, which is unique to the guest house. Loved the snacks that were available for purchase in the room (brilliant idea). We enjoyed our stay.

They should inform people on booking about the ridiculously steep staircase to the bedrooms upstairs. We would not have booked if we knew. Unsafe for people and worse with luggage.

"Reception was not exactly friendly. Our booking was not done correctly. No masks were worn by management or staff we received."

Very dangerous style stairs were the first thing that greeted us. No assistance was offered to help us get our luggage up the same stairs. In general, the guest house is run down and needs quality renovation. The deck is truly awful, I can't imagine any guest would want to sit and hang out there. Although the bar and lounge area looks nice in the photos on the ad, it was locked and therefore we could not use it. The living room upstairs looks like a children's playroom with messy and mismatched furniture.

Nice rooms with all expected mod-cons. Tertia is extremely helpful and accommodating and the breakfast must be one of the best I've had anywhere. The staircase could be a bit challenging for older people as the steps are very narrow.

Friendly people and a clean guesthouse is a winning recipe. The breakfast choices are fantastic, always fresh and perfect. Our room number 7 was a bit small for a week's stay, but we will definitely look at Mermaid again when we go to Struisbaai.

We were kindly received. Family unit did not completely meet our needs because was on the ground floor (so no view). Then moved to first floor rooms (beautiful view). Rooms beautifully neat. Just a pity there is one DStv channel.

We had an amazing stay at the Mermaid. The homely atmosphere was a breath of fresh air after a long drive. Many thanks to Christine and her staff who went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, and that both my boy's - who are in wheelchairs - had access to where they needed to go. It will always be our first choice to stay when we venture down to this part of the world again!
