64 guests' feedbackEnjoyed my stay at Halliwell.
Very helpful staff, Josi at reception arranged for us to check in much earlier than the usual time and the waitress at breakfast was amazing.
Characterful old building with interesting history. Beautiful landscape with 'rescue' horses. Fireplace in room was heavenly!
Beautiful historic farm environment with lots of charm. Would definitely use this again as an overnight stay.
See stars.
Very nice stay. Will for sure again.
Delicious food! Really great, beautifully presented and deliciously prepared. Comfortable, clean place to sleep. Friendly employees. All that would be nice would be to have an old small fridge in the room, but otherwise great.
Great one day stay, could have used more.
Other than wet firewood leading to a very 'smokey room', we enjoyed our stay. Heidy was fabulous and very hospitable - so was Clinton. Thank you.
Everything about the hotel was great, except for breakfast. The receptionist, room service, and bar staff provided exceptional service. However, there was no heating in the entrance or room, which was disappointing as the weather was unexpectedly cold and rainy. Although dinner was superb for the three friends, my risotto was extremely garlicky, making me feel unwell. Breakfast was a huge disappointment since we expected a buffet, but it was not what we had hoped for. The omelette, on the other hand, was divine.
Good but we thought it was going to be self-catering, so we had to buy dinner and not use what we had. Rooms for 3 adults weren't private. Only 1 bathroom.
Beautiful location. The food was very good.
Great stay! Neat, clean and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were top notch.
Good management and beautiful surroundings.
Good value for money, with a good location and a beautiful view.
I really enjoyed my time with them. Very nice place and fantastic restaurant.
Beautiful surroundings and so peaceful and quiet. I would love to go back there.
We had a nice stayover, with the most charming atmosphere, the best food, and friendly staff, I will recommend it to any traveler.
Room, service, meals and hospitality are 5-star. Will always book there again.
Highly recommendable! Breathtakingly beautiful with excellent amenities, facilities and service. Top notch food. Would stay there again anytime, even if it's just for fun!
The location was handy for our stop-over on the way to the KZN coast. The accommodation is lovely, and the food was great. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't good, so we missed out on the lovely gardens.
Chanced across the place by chance and we were very impressed with the Old Halliwell Country Inn. It was very comfortable and well-maintained. We were greeted by friendly staff and made to feel welcome. Loved it.
The Gourmet burger and the Blueberry Stack were fantastic - compliments to the chef! The head waiter was terrific.
Our second visit was even better than the first. Peaceful, tranquil, quiet, and relaxing. A bit of a mission to get there but well worth the effort.
Rural tranquility, big trees, lovely view and a log fire. Old world charm. Delicious dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Great service from helpful people.
They have friendly staff. Their rooms are so neat.
The place is run down. There was a limited amount of blankets as there was only a very small heater in the room. The furniture was shabby and dirty.
We needed accommodation for a wedding in Howick and this was perfect. Delicious breakfast included in the price and the service from the manager to the cleaners was fantastic. Will definitely visit again. The roads in the area, specifically Currys Post, need attention, but that's probably the case everywhere.
The accommodation was wonderful with excellent service. Food was also excellent.
Such a wonderful place to have visited. Believe me, you will not be disappointed, from reception to your room to having dinner and the most scrumptious breakfast, everything was on point. The staff was exceptional and very friendly. They made us feel right at home. We loved our stay at Old Halliwell and will definitely book again.
Old Halliwell Country Inn is an excellent place to stay, with an exclusive restaurant, amazing variety and delicious menu options, superb service and just the best homey feeling. The owner, Joe and his staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The countryside scenery was spectacular - truly a breath of fresh air.
Joe, the owner was incredibly hospitable. The food (morning, lunch and dinner) was top notch. Peaceful surroundings with a beautiful view. Would highly recommend it.
We had the best time, people are very friendly, rooms top notch.
Service, food and location - everything was perfect.
Had a great time!
Beautiful gardens, nice view, neat accommodation. Meals were delicious. Just don't be in a hurry, it's not a fast food restaurant.
Fireplace was inadequate for heating the room, it was also difficult to light given the recent rains making the wood damp. Outside of this, the bed was comfortable albeit a little soft, the bathroom and ablutions was good, housekeeping was a bit late and slow. The show piece is the pub (recommended) and the dinning facilities for breakfast, lunch and supper was a definite plus - pricing was higher than expected. It must be noted that the Midlands Meander is back in full swing, so everything is packed over the weekends, so if you want a more quiet and relaxing experience then midweek is better. On the constructive advice side - Anya (I think) is a breath of fresh air, a real people's person and a good investment by the management, there was also another assistant who came across as competent - unfortunately there is a disconnect between these 2 and the overall staff in addressing things and getting things done. Perhaps it is the malaise of the Midlands. In my view a bit of focus, energy toward customer service would definitely assist the business a lot. Of course I would be amiss if I did not mention the horrific roads in terms of potholes and heavy truck damage. Best to come via Nottingham Road rather than via Howick is my suggestion. Not the greatest road either, but massively better than the alternative.
Definitely more suitable for families with older children or couples. I was disappointed that we didn't get the room, which is shown on the website as the one we booked.
Staff were incredibly inept and unhelpful. They refused to drop off our 82 year old Grandma near the main entrance and offered no help or alternative. The rooms were not ready by 2pm. They argued that we had not paid for room even though we had booked and paid through the website, 2 months ago, and blamed the website for the mistake which was clearly on their side. It was unpleasant and we will definitely not be staying at Old Halliwell again. It is unacceptable to refer to your customers as: "That blond chick needs to come and pay". There are definitely much better options in the Midlands to choose from.
The atmosphere and location is something to experience. The gardens are well maintained and the view over the mountains is exceptional.
We really enjoyed lighting the fireplace in December! Spacious, well-equipped room.
Our room was clean, spacious and very comfortable. Love the big garden with trees and lots of birds. Will definitely stay there again.
Our stay was very pleasant. The staff are friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast were very tasty. Will stay there again if the opportunity arises.
Recommended for any traveler or vacationer.
Staff extremely friendly and helpful, their dinner was amazing and well priced. Bedrooms clean with a fireplace, recommend for sure.
The rooms need attention on the outside, inside it was very neat.
The manager was the best we have ever encountered, so fantastic with the guests, polite and attentive. Beautiful grounds and buildings. The restaurant is outstanding and the food of the best quality, very well priced. The room lacked a bit of character and quite cold. No fireplace in the room we were in, but comfortable and adequate for an overnight stay. We would like to go again, perhaps in a different room and stay for a few more nights to soak up the peace and atmosphere.
This was the 2nd year we stayed at Old Halliwell Country Inn on our way to the south coast. The staff are friendly and helpful and the accommodation is tidy. Special thanks to Manhla who was always ready and close to make sure everything was ok. We will definitely book and stay at Old Halliwell again every year!
Very nice, spacious rooms. Lovely bathrooms, nice fireplace in the room for cold weather. Tasty meal with friendly waitress. Cozy stay in the old-fashioned, well-maintained building and beautiful surroundings.
Accommodation very neat and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very idyllic atmosphere and in-house restaurant. I will definitely recommend Old Halliwell Country Inn. We will be returning.
The visit to Old Halliwell Country Inn was an experience! The silence and tranquility of the surroundings provide the perfect getaway atmosphere to escape from city life. We especially enjoyed watching the retired horses as they grazed in the surrounding paddocks.
I love the place very much. Will stay there again anytime. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to visit Howick. Very neat and nice place in a very nice area. Very friendly staff. Cute restaurant with delicious dinner and breakfast.
The environment is another of SA's natural gems. Old Halliwell's people very friendly and sincere. Would stay there again anytime.
The luscious green environment makes one so peaceful. Our room was quaint and well equipped. Will be back someday.
Rooms were clean and comfortable. Meals at the restaurant were great. Really recommend this place as a base for exploring the Midlands.
Very peaceful, old colonial country feeling with beautiful gardens and views. Only complaint was my dinner lamb shank was very dry and over cooked.
Old Halliwell is picturesque, quiet and ideally located accommodation to visit the Midlands Meander. Staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and tidy and have everything you need to make your stay comfortable. We will definitely come again. Thank you very much.
Pleasantly surprised. Stunning place.
We had a wonderful stay. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The food was excellent. Would recommend Old Halliwell to anyone!
One of the magic discoveries on the Meander. A magical old building, lovingly restored (complete with a resident cat) and managed superbly by the wonderful Delores! We will definitely be back!
The an idyllic destination. The rooms are extremely spacious and luxurious. The very spacious bathroom has a jacuzzi and even the soaps are of high quality. Beautiful horses grazing peacefully round off the picture perfectly.
Only issue was no showers in rooms, but otherwise all good.
Very friendly staff, from the moment you walk in till you walk out you feel like you are being taken care of. Great food and great place, cannot fault it!
Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and felt at home right away. Room is five-star. The driver, Debby, made us feel very special.
