Accommodation comprises a farmhouse, a cottage, a farm shed with an indoor fireplace ideal for an overnight stay, a stone shepherd’s house in the veld and a camping site under thorn trees with electricity and ablution facilities.
Our new unit is Grootdroom, a beautifully constructed, self-contained mountain chalet built on the banks of a dry riverbed surrounded by the Nieuveld Mountains. This holiday home was made for comfortable living with well-equipped features such as a complete 12-volt photovoltaic solar system that uses the sun as a renewable energy source to satisfy its electricity needs, e.g. lights and fridge.
The Karoo is an enormous semi-desert with the widest variety of succulents in the world, a diverse flora, a variety of primates, game, reptiles, invertebrates and birds.
Rooiheuwel is a safe and ideal destination throughout the year for hikers, offering the first green flag accredited hiking trails in the Karoo, birdwatchers, 4×4 touring groups, dual-purpose motorbikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, conference groups, environmental education groups and campers.

The walking and scenery was excellent.
We were warmly received. Directions were very good.
Historic stone shepherd's hut transports one back into the days of the pioneering farmers. A unique retreat and/or outdoor experience for those who enjoy the cathartic isolation and silence of the Great Karoo vlaktes.

We can recommend this place with great confidence. What a beautiful place in the Karoo. So beautiful and spacious. Next time we will definitely not just sleep over but simply stay for a few days. If it is clean the view is beautiful and the stars at night are just indescribably beautiful. The pool was a breeze and sparkling clean. We had a great time and will definitely come again!
If your idea is to really just be in isolation, then the remote location is ideal for you.
Quiet place to enjoy nature, refreshing with uncontaminated air. I recommended for family with children, large groups and even spouses only. Beautiful views and game viewing are amongst the interesting activities found there.
The rubbish bin had not been emptied. Too many fences stopping the natural movement of wildlife. No mention was made about how low the doors are at about 5 feet!

Rooiheuwel is very well located if you want to explore the Karoo. As a motorcyclist I recommend Rooiheuwel. Roads are in excellent condition.
The Stone House is where the shepherd stayed. So something completely different for the outsider. Everything that can be done in such a small house is done with effort. Swimming pool too nice and the hot shower in the sky was a hit. Well done!
The cottage is located in the middle of nowhere: it allows for quiet and good stargazing opportunities. The simplicity is definitely the right medicine for a "recharge".

Big dream on Rooiheuwel farm is ideal for families or a group of friends. The large indoor braai and outdoor plunge pool make it equally suitable for a winter or summer break. There is also a cozy outdoor barbecue, a veranda on which you can sit and appreciate the sunrise, and numerous short and longer walking routes just a stone's throw from the cottage. Solar power and no cell phone reception means you can switch off properly and feel close to nature. The house is also wheelchair friendly. One night was definitely too short. We'll be back soon, and for much longer!
Big dream is indeed a dream! Marge and her team are excellent, so hospitable and the service from start to finish was very very good. We spent a long weekend in Grootdroom apartment (5 adults), and had the most wonderful, unforgettable time! The house is beautifully furnished, tidy, accessible and located in the most beautiful surroundings with a view of Tafelkop. Grootdrom will definitely see us again! Perfect for a nice break to the beautiful Karoo and natural beauty.
The stone house is a gem in the Karoo. Basic, but exactly what we expected.
We were at Boplaas, the owner and her son came to visit and are so friendly and considerate. Nice people, we will definitely visit again. It's just very hot there and awfully quiet. Really recommend Rooiheuwel for people who want to find themselves again and rest! Many thanks to the people of Rooiheuwel!
