It was a lovely relaxing visit with everything we needed available. According to the photos, it was exactly what we expected. We will definitely come again.
Although the weather was bad, wind and rain, we had a very pleasant time.
Quaint and romantic. Oh so quiet with the ocean a constant rumble in the background. We had everything we needed - you don't need to take anything with you other than food and drinks. Safe parking, beautiful artistic touches everywhere. Outdoor braai can be used to make pizzas. Electric blanket and wall heaters made for such a warm and cozy atmosphere, and a drawer full of DVDs was the cherry on top. Private, spotless, just perfect.
The studio with its fairytale character, original and practical woodwork, artistic finishes and harmony with nature enchanted us. It was also well equipped and met all our needs. Very special. Continue like this.

We enjoyed our stay, despite having to leave earlier due to health reasons. A lovely time of the year and we enjoyed 2 walks to the beach. The fynbos was particularly breathtaking.

What a special place to stay. I was kindly received by my hostess, Aunt Annette, and later Uncle Jan also came to chat. My car was fully stocked and Uncle Jan parked my car in the garage for extra safety. I had a great stay and load shedding was not a problem at all. Will definitely stay there again.

Extremely comfortable, fabulous accommodation, well equipped and the owner has gone out of her way to make you feel at home.
We really appreciated the direct communication from the owner, Annette. It was also very thoughtful to have tea/coffee and fresh milk available. Our only criticism is that the mattress was not very comfortable and the actual bed was very squeaky, at the slightest movement. Otherwise, we enjoyed overnighting here.
We were warmly received by Jan and made to feel most welcome. Our host assured us of our safety and explained all the amenities available to us. We loved the character of the place as well as its location. We were treated to coffee, tea, sugar, and milk, which was another pleasant surprise. We weren't affected by load shedding at all as the owner had taken all the necessary precautions. I would recommend this establishment to all my friends and family.

We had a comfortable and cosy weekend. The kitchen is well equipped (more so then the photographs show). The front patio is sheltered even when it's windy. The hot water takes a long time to run in the taps so we appreciated using the outdoor hot shower. We also felt that the their could be better security on the double doors.
Place is very pleasant, comfortable. Definitely 5 star quality and perfect for a couple.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The place itself is comfortable and has all the essentials. Lovely attention to detail. Clean and smelled wonderful upon arrival. The courtyard is the most peaceful spot to relax in - covered in plants, shells and interesting things to look at. We made use of the braai every night and the outdoor shower is heavenly. Long walks around the town, to the beach and the penguin colony up the road which is a must for anyone visiting. We will definitely be back.

There is so much love and attention to detail in this accommodation: an old fashioned bathtub on 4 legs, fresh flowers in the bathroom and at the outdoor shower. We went back and stayed there again.
I can't stop talking about Sol Y Sombra. I was truly an amazing experience, no-one bothered us, we didn't even know that Tannie and Oom were there. It is private and a best place to find your inner peace and calmness. It was wow and I'd most definitely go back in a heart beat!

Quiet and safe area.
The only thing that might have been a challenge is the freezer part of the fridge. It's a bit small, especially when it's hot. Then there is no place for ice, or to keep meat fresh. Nevertheless, we had a great time, thank you Annette.
The cottage was well equipped with everything needed. There was room to put your stuff down as well as a bench to sit on. The kitchen was small and cozy with a small table for two. The bathtub on legs creates an intimate atmosphere. The private hot outdoor shower was very interestingly set in the private garden and lovely to use. The garden was created for birds with nests everywhere. We would love to go again and then for more than one night. Annette made us feel very welcome.

Although it was raining whole weekend, we were well entertained by the wonderful selection of DVDs in the room. The apartment has everything you need and the bath was heaven. The stay exceeded all our expectations. Everything we could think of was catered for. We had a nice rest and even watched a DVD ─ something we never do at home! The unit is very cutely furnished and I especially like the kitchenette with the little table and 2 chairs. The braai area was provocative and I had to stop myself from making a fire. An outdoor shower with hot water in a cut-through wine barrel was unique. Electric blanket, wall heater (it can get cold in Betty's Bay), free coffee and tea, fresh milk, comfortable chairs, a couch, shuttered windows, a comfortable and old-fashioned beautiful bathroom, beautiful carpets on the clay tiles, artistic footpath blocks and free WiFi complete the picture. Thank you, Annette and Jan Vorster, you will definitely see us again. Nos. For the nervous city dwellers, parking for your vehicle is safe under a security camera!
Annette and Jan are great hosts who took every effort to ensure our stay would be one to remember. After mentioning that we were looking forward to visiting the botanical gardens and doing a few of their hiking trails, they went out of their way to source relevant information regarding weather conditions for the duration of our stay which we really appreciated. Will definitely plan another visit when the weather is warmer to take full advantage of the outdoor shower, situated under open skies with minimal light pollution.
I have been all over, but this place has really stood out. The welcoming and a clean place and the service of owners was like staying in a 5 star resort. Keep it up guys, great place.

Beautiful, private unit with all the amenities. Wall around small braai area, perfect for a couple to break away. Kitchen has everything you need. Just bring coolerbox with essential items. Supermarkets are open until 7pm. You have to experience it to appreciate it. Silversands beach 5 min walk away.

This has been a very memorable stay at Sol y Sombre, and is hosted by warm-hearted people, absolutely loved all the small details. This is a perfect place to break away from the busyness of the town-life. Great places to hike and close enough to the ocean. With the arrival at Sol y Sombra the experience start. All neatly done and rounded off with shells and plants from the area. The little courtyard you immediately feel at home, almost felt to me I am back on the farm in my parents' home. Walk into the small cottage - what a clean place and smell and the creativity just breathtaking. With all the angling competitions I have attended this year this was the cleanest and most tidy off all the places we stayed at. For a couple or single person to break away it is a must. We will definitely visit again. Annette, thank you for making the stay memorable.

The Studio was more than we expected. It was really very neat. Everything very nicely laid out. The kitchen is very well laid out with all the necessary necessities that one needs. The bathroom is very nice with the old foot bath. The sleeping comfort is very neat and you have a view outside if you feel like lying on the bed and looking out. You have your own little plot with its own braai and is completely fenced with a wall, so you are completely private where you are and can sit and braai in your built-in braai and sit and chat and socialize without anyone bothering you. The owners are also private and do not interfere with you. It was really a very good experience and also very cozy. I would recommend it to any couple looking to get away and just be quiet and private.
I have never seen anything as cute and full of love as this humble little abode! We went on a private little getaway (just two of us) and for the price, we were not expecting the amazingness we received! The place itself is something out of a little fairy tale with its own private garden which is decorated to perfection. The inside was larger than what we expected, but cosy nonetheless. The bedroom (entrance room) welcomes you immediately. The bathroom houses the most comfortable free standing bath and is decorated as if from another era (still modern and tasteful) and the little kitchenette has all you need and more. We were welcomed by the owners who went inside to put the wall heaters on for us and took us through the basics and then left us to our own devices and really gave us our privacy. The small touches of love throughout the flatlet were unmissable and everything had been thought of. From bug spray, electric blankets, milk in fridge, DVDs for rainy weather and the owners even dropped off a light they had just bought for us to braai in the evening. We will most definitely be back as soon as we can! Unbelievable!

It's a beautiful, cozy and warm place. From the reception in a small private garden, the kitchenette that offers everything you could need in a self-catering unit, to a bathroom with a lovely bath and an outside shower which was a highlight for my husband. The host and his wife are friendly and cordial and do not interfere with the privacy of their guests. In one of the previous reviews, a guest mentioned that she did not like the teddy bears on the wardrobe. If you look through the rooms carefully you will find that the bears form a subtle theme throughout without being overwhelming. So, the bears can stay. The only thing that might bother is the fact that your car is not parked behind a security gate. But it did not bother us - just do not leave anything in your car that might tempt a passer by, and, with today's security system in cars, you will know very quickly if someone is tampering with your car. So, if you like a peaceful getaway, but without the cold, clinical feel of a hotel, Sol y Sombra is just the place for you and your partner. Sol y Sombra will definitely see us again.
Looking for quiet Betty's Bay is the place, and to be even more secluded, (even from busy streets) I would recommend Sol y Sombra to any single traveler or couple anytime.
We were received very kindly and made to feel at home. The apartment is beautiful and very neat with a courtyard and all. Compliments to the owners.
Pros: The bed is comfortable and warm (electric blankets provided). The bathroom has a lovely cast-iron bath, big enough for two. Cons: The facility has no safe parking, and the owners were adamant that we remove everything out of the car. In the end they very kindly made their own garage available. The room is quite small, and the kitchenette (most of it in a cupboard) only suitable for preparation of light meals. Summary: The facility is fine for sleeping over, but we would not recommend it as a holiday destination.

We had a wonderful time at Sol y Sombra. The gentle sound of the waves lulled us to sleep at night and we awoke to the sweet tweeting of the birds in the morning. So peaceful. The studio was beautifully decorated and very well appointed. All in all, a perfect getaway.
This place can be highly recommended. It is on the quieter side of Betties Bay - walking distance to a lovely walking beach, estuary and dunes. The owners paid a lot of attention to detail. The room and bathroom are truly beautiful.
