57 guests' feedbackIt was lovely - we were upgraded to the bigger house because the Troutways Private Retreat's fridge wasn't working - it was a nice surprise! Delicious barbecue under roof and beautiful view of the mountains and dam.
The accommodation at Troutways is so practical. There is wood for the braai, pet friendly, the host is wonderful. The boere seep is wonderful. All the kitchen utensils that you would need are available. We enjoyed our stay.
Had a wonderful stay. Access road a bit rough dirt road, but only about 500m.
Had a great time at Troutways!
We had a lovely stay at Troutways. The unit has everything needed for a relaxing visit, and was particularly neat and clean. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, dead quiet (you only hear the birds) and there is plenty of walking space (and a mountain to climb). We didn't get to everything, but will go again to tackle the mountain. The dirt road to Troutways is good and you can really drive there with any car. Highly recommended!
Very nice, everything you need.
Hein and his staff have exceeded our expectations of hosting! From the word go, he was helpful and accommodating! Fishing was great and the space is spectacular. Waterval Boven itself is run down, but there is so much more to see around the area! Thank you Troutways for having us!
It was very nice and the place was nice and clean.
Yes, slept very well on the bed, good linen, nice feather pillows. Everything neat and clean. Hein is a good host. I would recommend the place for an overnight stay. Thank you, Hein.
No reception or WiFi. The log house needs some attention. Not really much for kids to do, and there aren't designated hiking trails. The view is very beautiful. It is a peaceful environment. The log house doesn't even have a lock to lock the door in the evening, just a latch. Otherwise we had a very nice stay.
On arrival the owner was unable to confirm our booking and had to drive to town for a signal to make sure the unit we booked was available due to the absence of cell phone reception on the farm. It made one feel embarrassed and uncomfortable as we had to explain who we booked through and when. The reservation had been made months before. The unit we stayed in was a spacious house with a large veranda and a beautiful view of a pond and mountains, but lacks attention especially to the kitchen sink and the braai on the veranda which leaks when it rains. There was no cleaning service for the 5 days we were there, nor was provision made for a mop, extra toilet paper, garbage bags, or cleaning supplies, except for a little Sunlight Liquid. We had to spray and clean the porch ourselves with a garden hose and broom. I do not recommend a low vehicle to visit the institution, especially if it is raining. It is pet friendly, but make sure your animals are treated for ticks before you go. I recommend the stay because the place is right by the Homestead and has a view of a farmyard. Also take enough fly spray with you.
Unfortunately the weather was very bad , cold and wet. The apartment was neat but rooms had no heating system (heater). The fireplace in the lounge /dining room is small and wood did not want to burn due to being wet. Apartment is for 5 people but only have one couch to sit on. Host is very helpful and friendly. No wifi available.
We had a really nice stay, the house was between the mountains with the most beautiful views and so much silence. Reception was very little but that is precisely the purpose of the holiday.
It's a lovely getaway. We only stayed one night but were sorry when we had to leave. We should have stayed longer. There is a lovely braai area with lots of wood and a small old stove in which you can make a fire. It's a nice cozy place.
Rest and peace in the most beautiful scenery and delicious fly fishing!
Will go again for the tranquility.
Troutways has so many magical treasures that must be discovered and explored. We hiked up the mountain early in the morning to watch the sunrise. The views were truly spectacular and breathtaking. We waded through the stream barefoot, we drank the crystal-clear spring water, took in the picturesque trout dams and enjoyed the serene mountainous atmosphere with the sounds of nature surrounding us. I highly recommend Troutways, Hein was a very welcoming and amazing host. All the workers were also very welcoming and assisted with anything we needed. We stayed in the Rainbow lodge, and everything was neat, tidy and well-stocked in terms of cookware and utensils. They even provided us with firewood for our braai! There is a gravel road leading up to the property for about 1km – best for 4X4s or SUVs (a sedan will struggle a bit). Try to get the load shedding schedule for the area beforehand (the unit has a gas cooker, which was quite handy). All in all, it was peaceful and we will definitely visit again.
Very nice stay, beautiful surroundings.
Unit was clean and fresh, bedding and towels were great quality and beds/furniture was comfortable. They should, however, say in their listing that the road is not suitable for a car, even small SUVs struggle, at least that way you are prepared.
If you have a high-clearance vehicle and want to get away from civilization, Troutways is great. No pool as in the pictures. We were lucky to be upgraded to the big house. Lovely view. Very comfy beds. Pity there are spotlights on at night.
Lovely accommodation on a working farm with beautiful surroundings.
Friendly staff, beautiful location and safe environment.
The area is beautiful and peaceful, you forget a little about the world. Staff were friendly and our requests were dealt with quickly. The house is well equipped and comfortable. We had a great time and hope to see you again!
The farm is beautiful. The lodge is very nice, neat and clean. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to spend Christmas.
A beautiful, quiet setting. A place where the family can pull together. Hikes are slow, and easy. Walks are gentle. The pool is refreshing. Nature surrounds and abounds, without interfering.
It was absolutely fantastic, nice road to travel. Nice house with everything you will need. I can just suggest a kettle that you can boil water of the gas stove please.
The log cabin needs a little attention. It would be nice to know ahead of time that coffee, tea, soaps or shampoo are not provided. But luckily the town is close. Nevertheless, a beautiful place where one can rest and relax.
Very tidy, more than enough facilities.
Value for money is not there either. Would expect cleaning to be included for the price.
We had a lovely stay on this beautiful, tidy farm. Was kindly greeted upon arrival. The natural beauty made for an ideal place to visit with family and switch off from the hustle and bustle. It is one of those places that crawls into one's heart and was hard to leave.
It was wonderful to relax in nature. Thank you Hein for the fly fishing lessons!
Beautiful location with nice walks.
The name Troutways is a misnomer. My son and I stayed for 3 nights and never even saw a trout. We are fairly experienced in fly fishing, having fished in many areas of SA.
Friendly service, cabin was well equipped, and impossibly beautiful. We miss the 2 dogs, scissors and boy.
Very tidy, well equipped, incredible silence
The stay and accommodation was excellent. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. But what was the best are the fantastic routes that one can venture on foot on the premises and surroundings. This was one of the best "surprises" in 2020.
We had a lovely stay, friendly host. Our dogs enjoyed it a lot. Beautiful trout dams and nature to take a walk.
Considering it was a last minute booking we were pleasantly surprised at the lovely home we walked into. An enormous spacious farmhouse with a well-equipped kitchen and open dining area. Lovely furnishings and fireplace in the lounge with DStv, played card games around a roaring fire each night and best of all the comfortable firm beds with beautiful linen, warm feather duvets and additional soft blankets. Thank you to the hosts who were close enough for queries but never intrusive. We loved our long weekend exploring the area.
What a nice hidden gem. Just the place to relax. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely come again. Brian, Ronel and Hein, thank you very much. Your hospitality is shanana.
The house we stayed in was wonderful, clean and tidy. Fishing was great and really enjoyed it. We are also well looked after during our stay. All the problem we encountered was the loud noise and fireworks that were shot by the people who stayed next to us. Something like that should not be allowed at Troutways. Whether it was recorded with them I'm not sure, but didn't want to cause unnecessary trouble.
The place is really nice, clean and tidy. It was really pleasant to stay there. Didn't catch a trout, but just relaxing was enough. Negative: Waterfall Above town is an absolute nest and put us off terribly. I will saddle up again at Troutways Private Retreat. Thanks for all your help.
The most incredibly beautiful overnight place. Amazing nature. My dogs had an absolute ball on the farm and enjoyed the wtaer. The wooden house I stayed in was stunning and well equipped. Very clean and neat with lovely linen and towels. Angie and Dennis were friendly and helfpul. Constructive criticism: the braai area by the wooden house is in a slightly awkward place. Not very private and the ground is not level around it, which makes it difficult to sit comfortably by the fire. A cement slab would help a lot! Lots of braai wood, everything was great!
Wonderful experience and an affordable getaway.
Special place! The place is beautiful. It's so nice and you can really just relax. The fishing was exceptionally good and I would go back any day of the week!
Troutways is a gem that we will visit again and again. We stayed at the Rainbow house the weekend of 13 to 15 February 2015, the quietest one of the four, had it not been for the visit to the ponds we would not have seen any other people. Everything you need is there and the house is clean and the bed and linen are top class. My husband enjoyed fishing there for Trout, had several bites and also caught two very nice Trout. Troutways, see you soon.
Rainbow chalet is neat and clean and well equipped for self-catering. The large double bed in one room slept very well. Both rooms are connected with their own shower which was also very nice. I have never tried to catch trout although I got a short lesson from one of my friends. There are hundreds of small "trout fingerlings" in the ponds, but the fish just wouldn't bite. At least I caught two small kurpers which I threw back. Furthermore, the farm is being well maintained. The silence and hills charmed even more with clean air and tranquility. There are four ponds that are well maintained. It's just a little muddy on the banks where a guy is trying to fish. Wooden platforms will remedy this situation.
We felt very safe at all times and were able to explore the farm and the surroundings with ease. The cottage was comfortable, adequately equipped with good beds and clean linen and towels. The kitchen is simple, but adequately equipped. There are different farm animals that roam freely on the lawns and make the experience even better. If you crave rest for your soul, Troutways is your destination. I recommend it anytime.
Ideal for a quick break from the busy city life. Easy to find. Very comfortable and well equipped units. The manager and owner were there and they were very "hands on" and often came to see if everything was ok and if we needed anything. I would definitely recommend it.
Very peaceful if you need rest. Beautiful scenery. Accommodation is very clean and tidy. However, the nearby villages are small and offer little for the tourist. There is no cafe or shop on site.
We really enjoyed our time there. It was very peaceful and in a beautiful setting. The house was clean, tidy and everything needed was there. The place is very comfortable. Thank you for the hospitality.
Staff was very helpful and the fishing in the area was good. Retreat had a complete kitchen and DSTV.
It was a lovely peaceful weekend with good friends in beautiful surroundings.
See the stars below.
The road to Troutways Private Retreat is not very friendly, even if you are warned it does catch you off guard. Fortunately, this changes quickly when you first arrive, because it is very nicely equipped, with a peaceful atmosphere, in a beautiful environment and with a friendly reception. It is clean and tidy. We would recommend it to others anytime. Thank you.
Thank you. The place, log cabin and the morning fog were beautiful. A TV would have been nice and a few things were missing. There were no shelves or soap trays in the shower and no mirror in the bathroom. Although we didn't barbecue, I think a built barbecue area is a must for future satisfied visitors. Keep well!
Would love to use the accommodation again in the future.
