The water meets SABS standards for household use and human consumption. Just bring along food things and drinks as there is no shop in the reserve, nor are any catering services offered.

72 guests' feedbackThe scenery takes your breath away, the whole drive to the cottage, the views were incredible. We had a nice barbecue that evening, with the most beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. The cottage is primitive, but comfortable, with everything you need.
The rustic stone cottage is a treat! It is basically furnished and equipped for self-catering purposes. Picturesque surroundings. We enjoyed the fire deer so much. Thanks for the crates of wood.
Great place to sleep over.
We had a wonderful stay at Witteberg Nature Reserve. A very beautiful area and would definitely visit again.
Excellent accommodation with hospitable reception.
Nice and spacious, quiet, clean and friendly reception. Had a nice time.
The Witteberg Nature Reserve is a wonderful place to spend a few days. It is, however, quite far off the beaten track for an overnight stay. We were travelling from the Free State to Cape Town and booked to stay at Witteberg, but I did not check the distance off the N1. It was over 40 km on gravel roads. As it happens, there was heavy rain the night before our arrival and portions of the road had been washed away. We were fortunate to have an all-wheel-drive vehicle to get there. We arrived later than expected and a little frazzled! However, we soon settled under the kind care of the manager and peaceful surroundings. It is a nature reserve bordering on Anysberg, and it is pet-friendly. We will definitely be back for a proper break.
Pleasant, clean. A bit cramped for 5 adults with 1 bathroom, but needed a stay close to Matjiesfontein.
It is in a piece of Karoo heaven. The natural beauty, silence and seclusion are a retreat for soul and body. Units need to be upgraded and painted, as well as bedding and curtains.
We only had a one-night stay so not too much time to explore the beautiful surroundings. The accommodation was comfortable. The weather was not too good. There was a lovely fireplace which warmed the house. Wood was provided.
The units are very neat and well equipped. Pet friendly. All necessary information has been sent to us in advance. We were received very kindly. The scenery is exceptional.
Amenities basic, but all that is needed. The host was very friendly and helpful.
Beautiful scenery and complete silence. Comfortable and friendly host.
The place is well equipped and just what you need for a nice break from everything.
Breathtakingly beautiful surroundings. Frik was incredibly effective.
Wonderful place, peace and quiet for your soul, pet friendly, everything works and very comfortably equipped with all the essentials.
Lovely stay. It is so beautiful and quiet there. The host is very pleasant. Will definitely visit there again.
I did not realize how far it was from the main road, I would recommend that only 4x4 cars go on that road. It would have been nice if kindling was provided for the fireplace. You need the fire in winter, very cold there. Other than that it was fine.
Upon arrival we were met at the lodgings by a very friendly and interesting owner and shown around. Well situated in the mountains, all amenities for self-catering were provided. Pity we had only booked for 1 night as this venue deserves a revisit.
Frik was a good host. Had a lot of wood. Coldest night ever.
For the amount we paid, we expected more. The mobile braai drum was so small, could barely make a fire in it so we had to use the neighbor's drum, we did not receive wood for the fireplace. Linen is old, no sharp knives for eating steak, no tall glasses for drinks, rooms very small.
Rustic cottage was a great choice, weather was perfect, clear skies, starlit sky was incredible.
We had a very relaxing stay and really enjoyed the walks.
Hospitable and tidy and well informed in advance.
Nature and environment something special - lets you see things from a different perspective.
Nice and calm, friendly owner.
The location is just magnificent, a beautiful drive on sand roads, with magical mountains and plants. We loved the drive there and back.
Nice break away from all the hustle and bustle and with only the basic necessities. Will definitely go back again.
Witteberg Nature Reserve is located in beautiful surroundings, also exceptional for bird watchers!
A wonderful overnight stay in beautiful and peaceful surroundings.
Abit isolated and a bit of a drive to get there; is ideal for persons looking for privacy.
Poor directions. No hot water. But beautiful surroundings, comfortable cottage. And best of all animal friendly.
The road is in an acceptable to good condition. Cute place. Wish we could visit another day. Frik's initiative opened the once inaccessible place to the public. Thanks Frik!!
Very nice area. The only problem was that there are no road signs to assure you that you are on the right road.
We had a lovely weekend at Witteberg. The communication from the manager was fantastic. He sent us all the necessary information via e-mail in a timely manner. The apartment is fully equipped with everything you could need. There was also a crate of wood. The view and the silence were fantastic. I even went jogging in the morning and it was very nice. Remember to take everything you will need with you. It is not fast to drive back to Lainsburg. The owner also reminded us so in his email - that was very thoughtful. The service was very good, they even showed us what one of the historic buildings looks like. We would definitely recommend this place!
The mountain folds and rock formations are something wonderful. Beautiful valley that makes good nature scenes. What a privilege it was to come stay in clean accommodation and find yourself again. Frik Linde is a man with a warm heart who ensures that his guests do not suffer any inconvenience. He just can't do enough to make you feel at home and is happy to share the history of the Reserve. Thank you for helping to make our stay even more enjoyable.
See stars.
Frik is an excellent host and more than willing to share his knowledge of the area and former farm with guests. Also extremely helpful with anything and everything. Unit is neat, clean and meets all the basic requirements. The surroundings are beautiful and the atmosphere one of complete tranquility. There are nice walking paths, the reserve is isolated from the rest of the world where one can forget about the daily worries and problems. Recommended for people who need time to recover from the hectic life. Will definitely visit again - this time with our dog child!
The accommodation was very neat, clean and well-equipped. Will hopefully one day make another trip there.
We discovered a new world. The rugged scenery was exceptional. The unit neat and well equipped. The starry splendor in the secluded location is breathtaking! Thank you very much Frik.
Access is via good dirt roads with numerous river crossings that will be a challenge for cars during rain in the mountains. For 4x4 and nature lovers this is a beautiful place to explore and with 6 routes that vary in driving time from 1 hour to all day, a weekend will be too short to see all the beauty. We had the 2 bedroom unit, which, although not modern, was clean and tidy. Especially the shower with nice high pressure was refreshing. Due to the limited capacity of the battery power system, a microwave is not provided. There is no radio, because there is probably no FM reception. Also a nice strong LED reading light will make a big difference in the evening. I definitely want to go again and stay longer this time.
Beautiful environment, food for the soul.
Pleasant stay with loads of silence and natural beauty.
Have a nice time. Restful.
For us nature lovers', Witteberg was very nice. The fact that Frik is very friendly and gave us information about the surrounding, was very good. There was enough space for our dog and we could truly enjoy nature and the stillness.
One of the most beautiful drives through the mountain. We were met by our friendly host on arrival. Very comfortable accommodation, well equipped and beautifully clean with very comfortable beds. Best of all, my dogchild was allowed with a closed-in courtyard. Thank you for the lovely stay in the mountain!
Witteberg Nature Reserve is not suitable for someone expecting urban entertainment. It is remote, but not far from Cape Town. The facility offers secluded tranquility in a historic valley in the Karoo. There are two-track paths that take you to distant corners. The focus is on silence and respect for nature. Mobile phone and internet connection is extremely limited but try it and enjoy. It is a reminder that the lack of it is not the end of the world, on the contrary.
We, our two small dogs and bird were made very welcome. Our cottage was clean, well equipped for all we needed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The best place to be when you just want to get away from it all. Lie on a blanket with a book and gaze at the starry sky at night.
Frik was very helpful and friendly and we are definitely going back.
2.5 hours from Cape Town. The ideal break away from the busy city and traffic. Very quiet and the cottage offers everything you need. It was definitely not my last visit!
What a special place, nice warm shower in candlelight. The night sky is just fantastic at the place. Stone house really unique.
A big attraction is the 4x4 route on Witteberg. Unfortunately (and I understand why) almost all of them were closed during my visit. It would be good if that is clear when you make your booking.
Do yourself a favour and drive to dirt road to Witteberg Nature Reserve. The accommodation is clean, aire is clean and its quiet.
One of the best places one could recommend, especially if you like taking gravel roads to unfamiliar places, to see reserves and other rough parts of our country.
This is a place where one can find oneself again and breathe in nature. Stay was very pleasant in a clean and tidy apartment with everything one needs. Will definitely stay there again and will also advertise the place.
Very beautiful landscapes, beautiful stargazing, clean air, goats, birds, bushman drawings in cave, 4x4 routes, rode my MTB there. Frik the manager is very friendly and felt very welcome. Would recommend to anyone looking to get away from the busy city life.
Wonderful place, between nothing and nowhere. Here you can begin to renew your soul with the deathly silence, wonderful view and the unspoilt natural beauty. Highly recommended and the route on the way to the farm is worth mentioning.
Very neat, clean and spacious accommodation with everything you need. I think this would be paradise for nature lovers who wants to get away from everything. You hear nothing except the birds, etc. You travel on a gravel road which is for the most part very well kept. However, in my opinion you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle or at least a SUV for the last part of the road from the entry gate to the reception area, which they should mention to visitors.
Would definitely recommend it.
Beautiful scenery. Very nice dirt road. Very safe environment. Very clean accommodation. Very friendly host. Very peaceful and quiet place away from the city noise.
We would definitely love to go there again for a longer period of time. It was refreshing!
Was great. Pristine Would recommend it.
The environment is special: some of the most beautiful examples of folded mountains and sandstone rocks, a wide variety of soil types and vegetation, lovely walking paths (probably also for bikes and four-wheel drive, but I only walked), complete silence and safety - how special is it for a city dweller to be able to spend hours alone in the field and take pictures in complete safety. The pre-arrangements went smoothly and the reception was great. Take into account limited electric power obtained from solar cells, and bear in mind that, for example, there is no microwave oven, but the facilities are completely adequate, in good condition and the gas appliances work without problems. A fireplace dissipates the cold and wood is available locally. The owner/manager is helpful, caring and knowledgeable. You feel nostalgic when you read about the challenges and experiences of early inhabitants, but this adds to the charm of the place and gives extra depth to your visit. It is a privilege for a Cape city dweller to be able to visit such a beautiful environment within easy reach. Considerable changes are planned, including joining a nature conservation corridor and more places to stay, but the indication is that this is being done with careful attention to conservation. What influence the developments will have on the general atmosphere remains to be seen.
See the stars below.
I can recommend Witteberg with great ease. The directions to get there are very clear, and the scenery is truly something to look forward to. The accommodation is very comfortable and tidy.
Neat, comfortable, except maybe mirror at plug for women.
The Nature Reserve offers complete peace and quiet and lovely paths to walk around and see animals. This is a beautiful area to stay in.
The houses are equipped with everything and very neat and clean.
Great service and organization with a lovely stay! We will definitely recommend it to friends and family (and of course remember to mention that it's a long but beautiful dirt road)
Very neat and clean. Nothing was missing.
